    8GB vs 16GB of Ram M1 Mac?
    Mac Mini M1: geni.us/kzZmZx
I picked up the 8GB Unified Ram M1 Mac Mini, Experienced issues..and promptly returned it... for the 16GB Mac Mini, and as a video professional who uses the Canon C200 with the XF-AVC Codec In Final Cut Pro (FCPX), these are my first impression and some issues and workarounds. EOS R footage works perfectly.

It was booted off the internal drive. The swap memory was being over used, especially with really long video clips. Even with the 16gb some performance issues are still present.

Could you please do a heavy multitasking test on the M1 16GB unit? Would love to see over 1,000 to 1,500 processes running with over 20 apps running with hundreds of tabs open in Chrome, Chromium, Firefox, Brave and Safari. Really would love to see how strong this device is in the multitasking area and what it really takes to bring it to its knees... Would like to see multiple Terminals running with `htop` from MacPorts or Homebrew running to get an idea of what's happening under the hood.

I'm a casual user and I need a good cheap computer and I'm finally gonna take the plunge with a Mac. This sounds more like a problem with the specific codec you were trying to use. Using prores would have been most people’s solution until the codec solution you normally use is resolved. But yea for video more ram is always going to be better, the fact that the M1 Mac Mini can do as well as it does with just 8GB is really the impressive thing here.

Had the same issue, got the 8 GB model first, returned it same day, it was unusable. 3 months later (being a little scared I have to return it again), bought the 16 GB RAM 512 GB model, and this is like a completely different machine. No complaints on this one, but it began working really well only when I installed Big Sur beta 11.3.

I had an 8gb M1 Mac Mini and "unusable" is the last word I'd use for it. It was blindingly fast for most things. I used Logic Pro to make some songs, Safari was killer fast, Microsoft apps were killer fast, etc. Just a great machine for basic things, for people who don't do much productivity on their Mac, e.g. read emails, web browse, maybe some photo editing etc.. I owned and used it a few times a week for about 12 months. The RAM problem only started when I started using my Mac mini for work, and installed every single Microsoft app (Word, Excel, Ppt, Outlook, Teams, OneNote, Tasks etc.) plus Figma, and then lots of browser tabs open, etc. etc. Only then was it starting to use swap files, which I didn't want to improve SSD longevity. I sold it and got an M1 Mac mini with 16gb RAM, and I have all those same apps open, and more, and it never uses the swap. If you're not using it for daily work then the 8gb will suffice for a while.

It's a good thing that I look for reviews before planning to purchase a new unit and it's a great help! Thank you so much! I will look forward to your channel and learning new things as well. Hopefully this gets fixed because it definitely looks like some kind of memory leak.

Since my current MBP is almost 10 years old it is definitely time for me to upgrade and since I already have a tablet and a big monitor it just made sense to pick up a M1 Mac Mini. I don't do hardcore video production and I mostly use Photoshop and similar drawing programs - but given the fact that these machines aren't upgradable and I tend to keep my hardware for many years till it breaks, I went all in on the specs -16 gigs of RAM and 512 gb hard drive. I don't buy into the whole "M1 uses less RAM" thing, as this video definitely shows. Even if I don't go further than making the equivalent of cat videos on TikTok, I have no regrets about it.

Thanks for this practical and direct review. I am a graphic designer and was going to buy the 8GB model for domestic stuff and as a 'look see' as to how silicon runs Adobe Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator (mostly). I understand the Ram / swap file thing and as a Pro in the olden days we would allocate a clean drive (or RAID partition) just for Photoshop swap files - the days of 300 DPI print on OS 9 :)
I will get the 16GB model now as the Studio is frankly ridiculous (cost and spec) for graphic design. Apple are not making it easy for professionals - trying to force them down the oh so expensive route with little in between. Not happy, one reason I still run two x MP5,1 12 Core 32GB 3,4GHz BTO towers - easily enough to run Adobe CS. And now with OpenCore we can boot Catalina :)

To be fair though, the MBP 2011 Intel is a different Mac altogether. I had the 17" MBP top model with the 1GB extra GPU and it was pants out of the box with a HDD and 8GB Ram. After I had installed an SSD for the boot OS (in the optical bay) and increased the RAM to 16 (max at the time) + optimised the system by removing bloated fonts and language packs etc (Google this - lots of things to tweak).
Thus set up, and with a boot in 8 seconds, the MBPro ran fine for 3 years and could do most things that a desktop could do (not games obviously) but then it died as most MacBooks do from overheating. There simply isn't enough ventilation inside and if you strip one you will see how useless this actually is, Some of the channels are so narrow that any fluff at all will block them... and it does which results in severe overheating especially if you are running the monitor off the standalone GPU with the lid closed.
If yours is still running, I would take it to a decent tech, ask him to strip it from the back and give it a through clean.
The MBPro was the most expensive Mac loss for me in 20 years $4000 for 3 years. Shocking since I still run several MP5,1 towers that are 12 years old now.

The most resource-intensive thing I do is build software. It has not crashed once. I really was on the fence about it, as my 10-year-old i3 has the same amount of memory. Perhaps they had some problems with e.g. the VM subsystem in MacOS with this architecture early on? I plan on getting an external drive to use for media, etc. Overall--especially for the price--I am happy with it. When I first got the 8GB/512GB M1 mini, with the launch MacOS I had beach balls and screen freeze very occasionally.
But several OS updates later, and 2 months of neural engine learning, I have zero beach balls, and negligible swap memory thrashing.
I’m not using FCP, but DaVinci Resolve, motion, and a large random suite of old software. It is not uncommon for me to have several dozen safari windows open, plus a couple of other apps.
It’s all fluid. But I generally only have one attached slow drive.
Your issues are unrelated to memory limitations, they are all codec related. Pick a codec that is actually fully supported by Apple.
Once you settle on hardware supported codec, and stick with it, until the neural engine learns your usage, you will find it runs much better.
Note: the 16gig takes longer to learn how to avoid swap memory issues. And uses double the space on your drive for swap memory.
This results in higher processor, and ram & drive temperatures as noted by other UA-camrs. This temperature difference under severe load is why I chose the 8gig, model with a larger drive. The larger drive can handle the swap files more readily increasing SSD lifespan, and the lower temps indicate less thrashing, and the performance hit of about 3% is worth the longer durability of the machine, and reduces running costs by about 7% due to lower fan speeds. You might look at Louis’s videos on M1 vs photoshop (intel), the 8GB M1 coped very well with very very large files, that would choke a 32 gig intel beast, and that was under Rosetta.
I imagine if your having issues with FCP & photoshop you likely need to also dig into your third party plugins as the likely cause of memory leaks that are helping to choke your M1. These leaks maybe minor, and will take longer to show up in a 16gig machine, depending on usage.
Tune your plugins, and maintain a regular workflow and the mini will adapt to your usage.
Note. The reason why your initial 8GB mini continued to perform poorly compared to your later 16GB model is probably due to your editor habit of not upgrading your software and OS as new builds come in. I will bet dollars to donuts your still running the same versions of Mac OS, applications, and plugins as you installed on day one in each machine, because that is how many editors roll.
So do your updates, maintain a regular time machine backup so that you can roll back software updates, and let the machine learn your habits.
Ohh, and check out any hubs your using in the ingestion chain, it seems that many of those available in the market are unqualified and varyingly conflict with Mac hardware.
Should you ever need to output to DVD note that a salvaged dvd writer from an old Mac tower works fine on a cheap and nasty powered SATA to USB-C adapter.

    • @RafaelLudwig
      @RafaelLudwig  3 роки тому

You are right, the software updates have definitely help! Though even with the 16GB of ram the system still runs out of memory, long clips or just memory leaks. Really looking forward to the next models the come out!

Anyone on the fence. This title is verging on pure clickbait. The 8GB is just as good as the i9 MacBook Pro’s in almost all aspect. I’ve had my M1 MBP base model for 2 years and even just invested in a Mac Mini for a more permanent home setup. The new chips may smoke them but don’t forget they’re also 3 times the price and these are still super capable editing machines for most formats!
(Memory swapping does occur but my drive has suffered no degradation on testing)
Anyone also treating ram the same as an intel/ryzen machine hasn’t done any research. Because it’s unified memory, the ram works much more efficiently. It’s very similar to the difference between a standard HDD and an SSD. My 32gb i7/GTX 1080 desktop can’t handle footage the same way my 8gb M1 machine does. It’s ridiculously good.

It's a killer niche Apple, as a company with a reputation for providing high quality hardware AND software, is very uniquely positioned to fill. There *are virtually no reputable PC pre-builts* that you can expect to get long-term adequate performance and support for the sub-$800 price point; every single one I or my mom has ever gotten runs for a year before promptly turning back into a pumpkin that seems to groan in pain when asked to even open Word. Providing a Mac in that range is a complete no-brainer that WILL get people into the ecosystem for the first time. The M1 isn't meant for people who do serious video editing or RAM intensive activities, frankly.
It's meant for people who need a desktop for general computing that they know will "just work" and won't come with the bloatware and garbage build quality/performance something like a Dell or HP would.

After all, the video and picture editing output would appear the same for the end user. Is it just for people who started off with Macs and aren't used to Windows? Are there more pros and cons?

    • @RafaelLudwig

It is true that a skilled editor could get to the same edit done on any machine. In that case gear does not matter. Fundamental skills are key to creating. The hardware and the software can actually slow down most creatives. Just like a skilled driver would be slowed down by switching from a nascar to an indy car. Both are fast one may cost less than the other, and in the end they would cross the finish line.
I made a video about my full views on Mac vs PC and why people would choose one over the other. Price is usually low on the list for those that don't want to build their own machine. ua-cam.com/video/avzOpFEpG2A/v-deo.html

I would say if you have the budget get the extra ram and get 512 ssd - having headroom will keep feeling snappy - the base model may be good for today but I always plan for any computer I buy to last as long as possible so I tend to slightly overbuy to make sure it still working great years down the road with new applications that are taking advantage of more powerful computers. The M1 macs are pretty solid little machines but ram is ram so as much as you can afford will always benefit the computer.

Great discussion. Your vid makes me wonder... Like many, I find computer systems working well at times but it does seem that so many still seem to have almost unreal experiences with theirs. Like, I do experience slow downs or crashes at times, so your vid prompts me once more to consider the 16G in my upcoming purchase.

    • @RafaelLudwig
      @RafaelLudwig  2 роки тому +1

Highly highly recommend getting as much ram as you can. What many people don't realize is how much FASTER RAM is than the SSD - on the M1 Mac Mini Ram is 20 times faster than the SSD, so if the system is forced to move to swap memory on a slower drive, then it'll be slower trying to pull that back. I do recommend 16gb ram and at least 512gb SSD - give your computer headroom to work. My wife still experiences slow downs and crashes with her M1 mac mini. If you are doing video work, I would recommend saving up as much as you can and get the new M1 Pro MacBook base model (it's only a bit more than same spec'd 13" M1 MacBook pro model)

@@RafaelLudwig Thanks so much for getting back to me with this wise advice, Rafael. I feel your honest experience here. I used to sell computers a little many years ago, and I understand how customers may well need to spend more.
I’ll definitely keep looking at 16G and 1TB , partly as I’ll be using LPX and FCP again, and feel I hit “limits” as times, though my work will be hobbyist at present.
I’ve been struggling with this decision but you may well have given me the right answer: To save for the new model. A main part of my impatience may simply be an urgency to buy now, after waiting so long already. Consumer psychology?
      Much appreciated!!

I agree 100%! and those will be coming, they also know they have to give time to software developers to make their apps native, because I know that when I buy a new machine it HAS to work well with the software I use every day. Luckily this mac mini was bought as a family computer and not work computer. But it allowed me to put it through it's paces and I was pleasantly surprise how solid this little machine was, and excited where apple is going with the new ARM processors. 100% agree! I made this video in response to all the other reviews saying that 8gb base model was somehow magical. And that it was good enough for pro work. we bought it as a family computer, so I took the opportunity to put it to task and see how it performs. It's a pretty solid little machine! And 16gb will make it feel snappy for years! But it's an entry level machine meant for word processing, web surfing, and light creative work.

I don't think the Mac Mini was ever meant to have replaceable parts. Sure, the real early models do, but those aren't "up to snuff" anymore, and Apple wants their money. They do offer Mac Pro which is 6000 dollars and it looks like you can swap stuff out with it. BUUUT that is expensive.

It hurts when you buy it but when you break down a 5k purchase over 5 years that works out to 1k a year or $84 a month. (as long as you don't buy it on credit, then it's much more 😬)

Thank you for this....too many reviewers (and I listened!) saying 8GB is plenty. I picked up a Mac Mini as a windows desktop replacement (they only had 8GB available) and while the machine is great, is it just not enough RAM for me. i don't do video editing, but I do a fair amount of casual activity in parallel...add it all up and the memory pressure gets in the brown/red status in activity monitor after a few days, and own't recover without a reboot to kill off the spinning beachball.
i'd really hoped to return this device and get a 32GB model, but now with the delays I'm torn...my return window is only 90 days.

I just bought an M1, upgrading from a late 2014 Mac Mini. 16GB Unified with 516 SSD. I mainly use Final Cut Pro to edit video and Cubase to record multi-track audio. I finally had a chance today to get into it and play around with some footage shot with a local band for a video. Much faster rendering than before, didn't see any blurs or skips. I bought a USB-C Hub that helped get my 2nd monitor hooked back up with room to plug in my USB Midid interface for the audio recording I use it for. I'm impressed with the speed. I'm looking forward to what the future of the M1 chip brings
