11:39 I replayed Arkham City the other day and had a similar thought: Everything batman does is cool, but it all feels so premeditated. Batman wouldn't be able cross the iceberg lounge to fight the penguin if the penguin hadn't left those rafts in the water. The map continuously has elements in it that the villains clearly put there, which allow batman to escape. Then I remember that in a real scenario Batman would have access to any tool and to do anything, the same way a human can. We are restricted by the gameplay mechanics, therefore the actions have to be somewhat restricted too to make sense. So yes it makes sense to say "Oh but batman could've done this and this and this shouldn't have happened" but then you have to remember this is a diluted version of batman with restricted tools, movement and access to only certain areas. So yes, sometimes Batman's way out often seems to rely on his environment, but then we have to remember that the real batman would interact with so many other things that we just can't to get the job done, and these restrictions are in place because this is game that has to be playable by a vast group of people, thus it can't be too complex. That for me settled it in my head lmao
Currently in a second playthrough after 10 years or so and for me it's a resounding YES! A lot of copycats followed which eventually led me to lose interest in the 'genre'. I remember playing the Captain America game shortly after and then seeing these mechanics move over to the Assasin's Creed series. Playing this again I feel it did a lot of those game elements better than games years after trying to improve upon it, including Arkham City. Maybe the combat got a bit smoother but in atmosphere there's no match for me!

This game is truly a masterpiece. Even on this day. I first played this game on the Xbox 360. And then years later, I bought the Return to Arkham pack for the Xbox One, and it's still fun. Even Arkham City is amazing. And I also watched some parts of The Batman at my English class earlier on, today. But, I have not watched all of it in the movie, yet. So, no spoilers please. Still, awesome review!
I personally played every Arkham game (not counting VR) and I have full appreciation for the impact that Arkham Asylum had when it came out! I was beyond excited to play Arkham City too and loved that game even more because of how much better it was! Arkham Origins was fun and an underappreciated prequel that while it could've been a little better, it was pretty good for a game that didn't have much development time. Arkham Knight had an incredible boost in gameplay and open world qualities! I get it that the Batmobile was a little overused but be grateful they made the effort to give us a whole new game instead of just expanding the map size!
I just completed this game, and I think I never played free flow combat games before or something, because right in the first fight I decided it had the best combat feel amongst the games I played.
I think what makes this one kind of special…is because of the confined space…Batman stays bigger throughout the whole game. As opposed to City or Knight, where the cancers often backs off from him.
I would def say this game beats shadow of mordor but shadow of war beats the arkham games for me personally. I also love how bruce slowly gets more agressive and puts people down alot faster as the games went on
I just beat the PC version again this morning and this is still my favorite Arkham game, there are nice tweaks in the sequels that are awesome but I still prefer this game.
I have played it when it 1st released and have multiple copies on different systems and just finished playing and City, Knight & even Origins before Gotham Knights comes out and after playing the remasters and Origins & Knight I will have to say … it truly is an incredible Batman experience but I think and just what I think Batman Arkham City is the absolute BEST! But being a Batman fan and collecting the comics and being 43 years old.. All of the Arkham games are a masterpiece in their own right!
Arkham Asylum is easily my favorite game in the series. The atmosphere, story, voice acting, music, and what it introduced the series to in terms of gameplay (the combat, stealth, and detective mode) is amazing. However, I think with this game does best out of all of them is pacing and that is because it’s not an open world game well not in the same sense of something like Arkham Knight or City. It’s a smaller game but honestly I think it works to its benefit.
Yes and it’s aged like fine wine. I believe the game is well on it’s way (if it’s not already there) to become a game most people will remember as one of the true classics like Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime and Dark Souls to name a few. Batman Arkham Asylum is to superhero games what Resident Evil 4 was to third-person-shooter over the shoulder perspective games.
Arkham asylum was my very first arkham game. I remember my sisters best friend lent arkham asylum to my sister to play then I played it. It'll always be my favorite out of asylum, city, origins, and knight. City I didn't like that much. Origins I beat for the 1st time this year. Which I think it was okay. Knight was fun at first, but the tank combat made it too much lol. Back to asylum, so I played it for the first time in October of 2009 or 2010. It was a perfect October game imo. To this day I need to remind myself that it came out in August 2009 and not October 2009. It just feels so spooky and so perfect, that it feels it fits in the most in October. Love asylum.
Everyone goes on about Arkham City, And rightly so. But Arkham Asylum has always been my favourite. And Arkham Origins gets done dirty. It's a fantastic Batman game.
It’s by far the best of the four Arkham games IMO. Like, by a country mile. I think the moment they opened it up to a city, the game started feeling more clumsy and less satisfying.
Asylum will always be my favourite Arkham game. Its not that long, its goes to the point, the gameplay feels complete and not overdone like the other ones, the atmosphere works perfectly for the Asylum and for a Batman in a crazy Gotham City. I liked Arkham City, Origins and Knight but they went really far to the original style and atmosphere...
Recently finished this game and i feel like my biggest and maybe only problem is that you can 100% this game. When you finished it, you feel like you've seen everything and stats tell you that. I wish there were more mysteries in the game and even after finishing the game you could never tell if you've seen everything or not.
One of my top 10 games of all time! While I knot the later games improved the gameplay pretty significantly, I still think this game had the best story and setting. My only major issue with this game is the final boss battle. But I'd give this game a 9.5/10 easily, with City being a 9/10 and Origins and Knight being 8.5/10. All in all an amazing franchise
Bought my PS3 and first game I got for it was Arkham Asylum. It really set the standard for how PS3 games should be. The Mrs surprised me with the PS4 Arkham Knight edition. That game also set the standard for how PS4 games should be for me... nothing really measured up to that quality.
I don't think I could EVER get tired of Batman! I would KILL for MORE Batman games (espec on Switch, lol)! :D Arkham Asylum is the BEST Batman game I've EVER played! Can't wait to play it again on Switch, along with the other two (and hopefully Origins eventually) since I never got to play those! :D

This entry is my favorite in the series yes the combat is the worst in the series but the world building absolutely top notch
If this combat is the worst in the series, then the other two games must have some damn fine action.
As a guy who played all of these games on launch, and I replayed all of them dozens of times I can say. Yes , it is really that good.
I just completed this game, and I think I never played free flow combat games before or something, because right in the first fight I decided it had the best combat feel amongst the games I played.
This is my favourite batman game
Loved playing through this when it came out.
I think what makes this one kind of special…is because of the confined space…Batman stays bigger throughout the whole game.
As opposed to City or Knight, where the cancers often backs off from him.
We need a behind the scenes footage of you posing for the thumbnails
I respect your work ethic 💯
Arleen Sorkin final farewell to her iconic character Harley Quinn how can you not love this game.
Perfect fit for the perfect series. Love the Content!
Yes. Batman: Arkham Asylum is still my #1 Arkham game then Batman: Arkham City.
I would say ts already considered a true classic 😆👊
I recently played the Arkham series, and holy shit, does it do a good job at making you feel like Batman
"where's the suicide squad game? Only rocksteady can do it"
Monkey paw curls
Nice to see this after I got platinum trophy, such a perfect video game for it's time.
Bro you need to get the lenticular case for arkham asylum looks awesome
I just platinumed this a while ago, worth every minute!
Recently finished this game and i feel like my biggest and maybe only problem is that you can 100% this game. When you finished it, you feel like you've seen everything and stats tell you that. I wish there were more mysteries in the game and even after finishing the game you could never tell if you've seen everything or not.
I remember I got the platinum hits version of this game at big lots for like $5 it was a real diamond in the rough
I'm pretty sure the "exclusive" Joker maps ended up in the Game of the Year editions anyway, so they're not PS3-only anymore.
I remember getting a PS3 that included Arkham Asylum for Christmas

Not my favorite Arkham game, but it’s still very good. Really set a standard for superhero games going forward.
great timing, i literally just played throughout all the arkham games for the first time except origins (which i'm working on)
Fake spam accounts trying to pretend to be you… that’s how you know you’ve made it!
Still an absolutely amazing game that manages to offer something different from future Arkham games.
What most reviews fail to give Arkham Asylum to give credit for is that Arkham Asylum is probably the only actually good 3d Metroidvania game there is today.
Sleeping Dogs is a close second as far as the free flow combat goes.
Should I buy the vanilla version or the GOTY version?
