I didn't actually play Last of Us til 2017 when it was already out on PS4 remastered. I skipped the entire PS3 generation, I was on the 360 for that 7th gen era, so getting a PS4 for the first time with this game and Horizon Zero Dawn was absolutely exciting. What made me decide to go out and buy one just to play it was admittingly the first trailer for Last of Us 2 where Ellie sings and plays the guitar. Talking about that game opens up a whole entire can of worms of itself, so I won't touch on that too long, just going to say I'm glad I'm more of a PlayStation fan these days, and one of the reasons is because of this amazing game :)
Regardless of how people feel about the second game (which I absolutely loved), the first game is by far my favorite game of all time and has been for the past 10 years. No other game has given me feelings, as well as the adrenaline rush that this game has even 10 years later. I'd say the only game that has gotten very, very close is Red Dead Redemption 2, and it still didn't triumph my love for TLOU. That shows you that Naughty Dog is easily one of the greatest developers of all time, and games like this don't come out every so often.
It is and it isn’t. Just played the PS5 update, which is did get on sale, I realized how front loaded the game is and some of the plot line hmmmms that became for many people the weakness of the second game. We would have to have a real conversation to discuss, but I’d still highly, highly recommend the game. There are moments that really hit the emotion button, and as I type we’re 3 hours from the HBO premier. Let’s gooooo!!!!
I was a vegetarian for 3 years, my hair was also getting thinner and I was feeling overall weaker. There were days when I had no energy to pull off everything that I wanted. Once I returned to eating meat and having a balanced diet, I was back to my normal self. I feel younger now than I felt back then: stronger, more energetic, and more able to deal with work-related challenges. Sorry for the unsolicited diet advice, but we evolved eating meat and there's nothing we can do about it. It might feel morally questionable, but agriculture at scale is also damaging for wildlife and lots of species. There is no moral high ground here, it's mostly about taking care of our bodies and living meaningful lives in our limited time here. Otherwise, keep up the good work!
I’m gonna come back to this in March lol. When It comes out for Pc. I would like to relive this game with as much as I’ve forgotten as possible still intact. But great topic for a video. Premier was great tonight. I have my reservations but overall a good start to the show!
When it comes to the ending, I agree with Joel in the end. Not because of selfishness, but because at the end of the day, we know more than ever how BS getting the cure was going to be, and I honestly would have felt much more disgusted if that loose interpretation of getting a cure had actually happened. It would have almost been insulting.
I'm in the same boat. I used to like it even more mind you. As I have gotten older, I have come to realize that mechanically speaking, even for games back when it first released, it is pretty by the books and unremarkable. The story is pretty standard zombie fare, albeit done well and same deal with the characters. And after the second game and that whole fiasco I have come to wonder if people that call the two games "masterpieces" would call watching paint dry a "masterpiece" maybe that's just the cynic in me being tired of seeing that term spammed so much as of late speaking.
You and your channels success is such a fucking inspiration. I wish I could share my collection with you. It's been growing for quite a while, and I don't have any friends who appreciate a retro collection.
Do more ps3 collecting videos! The last one was awesome, and would be cool with some of the prices going up recently on some of the ps3 titles. Ex: a complete boxed copy of the simpsons game is at $60-$70 on eBay. Edit: I’ve been a loyal sub since the fallout 4 speculation days, love everything and keep it up, so happy to see the homie Matty keep going up.
I never played it tbh. I think I played a few rounds of the multiplayer some how when it was big on PS3. But I’ve recently been collecting more Ps3 and 360 titles. I got the Last of us a week ago and played a little bit. I don’t have allot of time to play games as much as I use to sadly but it seems good from what I’ve played. But idk about it being the best game ever like people say. It’s good but there’s so many games out there…
Mechanics-wise: no, it's not bad but it's not revolutionary either. Story-wise: Yes, the character development is amazing and in my opinion is yet to be topped. A close second would be RDR2 with Arthur Morgan and the gang.
Bro Dead Space 2’s multiplayer was so sick! I especially loved that game’s multiplayer, The Last Of Us, Bioshock 2, and LOST PLANET. All dead games with amazing legacies for their time.
Honestly I came a year late to the party with the last of us part 1. I got my first ps3 for Christmas 2014. It was a ps3 slim bundle with the last of us. I remember not liking it whatsoever at first. So I stopped playing. I switched to the uncharted games since I got all 3 uncharted games along with all resistance games (my favorite) and killzone games for Christmas as well. I loved uncharted 2 and that's what started to help me start to appreciate the naughty dog formula. It wasn't until summer 2018 that I got my hands on a ps4 pro with the last of us remastered that I finally got into it. I loved that they included my home town of Pittsburgh, PA as a location. That to this day is my favorite part and the scene right where they enter the city and you see the yellow bridge in the distance, that is when I snapped an in game photo and to this day its my background for my ps4 pro. One interesting thing that made me adore the last of us was what I felt with the ending. I had grown so attached to ellie that when ellie was taken away from Joel and Joel knows she's gonna die, made me fly into a protective rage for me. I remember killing off every enemy with flamethrowers, grenades, shotguns ect brutally killing off anyone and everyone in my way to get to ellie. When I got to ellie I was so consumed with anger that they'd harm a child and what not I executed all the doctors. Then came the final part with the firefly leader. The second I saw it was her I was instantly pulling the trigger to fire my gun. There was zero hesitation for me. And that's when I realized that that's the point of the game. That Joel had lost one daughter, he wasn't going to lose a second. Even if they weren't related. The brutality of the world and that ending was what made me realize that ruggedness of Joel from so many years of surviving and dealing with the trauma of losing your only daughter, it made me feel exactly what Joel would be feeling in the game. Kill everyone. Leave no one alive so they can't come and find ellie again, and that desperation to save her life. It's not often a game can make me feel such strong enotions. From the beginning with Sarah's death to saving ellie. That's when I knew the last of us part 1 was God tier. Still haven't played part 2. With the whole controversy and hate it gets I've been putting it off for years.
I've tried to finish this game on 3 separate occasions and still never got through. Phenomenal production but for whatever reason I always put the controller down and move on to something else. Game is not for me but I get the appeal
Still my favourite version of the game is the OG PS3. Factions rocked and shout outs for Bioshock 2 MP love - I put hours into that - I remember decorating my apartment with winnings you could spend on furnishing. Also becoming a big daddy and having everyone teaming up on you was brilliant fun.
TLOU is in my top 5 all time. Probably the best story ever. Just so emotional. Keeping Ellie & Joel alive is so satisfying. That's why #2 was such a letdown. I hope the HBO show doesn't go into #2 if they have a 2nd season. I probably wouldn't watch it.
That isn't what the world was about tho, it's about major loss, revenge, and moving on from it. And it's a dark world where anyone can die at anytime from a small bite or stray bullet. Joel f-ed over so many people that had so many reasons to kill him. Killing him fits in the story and gave Ellie her turn to overcome grief. People just can't get over their protagonist not having unlimited plot armor. They want a fairy tale happy ending even when it doesn't fit the theme.
I now hate the word overrated. Especially when it comes to talking about video games. Oh.. I don't like a game as much as the majority does.. So I think it's OVERRATED. I really don't like Elden Ring but I definitely don't think it's an overrated game. Muppets everywhere in the comments.
@@nicekix3038 It's a 'jack of all trades, master of none' kind of situation for me. The game has ok stealth mechanics, ok action sequences and ok movement. I also didnt really enjoy the puzzles. I did love the environmental storytelling and the semi linear levels. Crafting was cool aswell. But the gameplay scores significantly lower due to these reasons!
@@GameTalesHQ I agree. The game is definitely a “jack of all trades”. The only thing I disagree with, is when people compare it to shooters like CoD, Destiny, Halo etc. The game is about being a survivor, not a gun specialist, or super soldier. I think it’s unfair to compare it to other games where the gunplay, and mechanics have to be exceptional for the game to work. Imagine if we had a zombie outbreak in real life, would you be out there killing zombies, and other humans with ease like you been doing it your whole life? Probably not. You would be learning how to survive on as you go. I’m not defending the game, but I think Naughty Dog did a good job making people feel like their life is on line with every encounter in the game, which is more realistic when you consider Joel, and Ellie are regular everyday people who were forced to kill
@@nicekix3038 Oh, I agree with you on that. The game did an amazing job of balancing power and desperation. But at a certain point i just wanted to get to the next story beat. I just feel like the gameplay was nothing special, just another cover shooter with stealth mechanics. If i replay TLOU it's not for the gameplay but for the amazing story :)

Joel was being selfish saving Ellie but the fireflies were not in the right either Ellie would have chosen to sacrifice herself but they never gave her a chance to make that choice, that's what always stuck with me was I would make the choice Joel does because they didn't give Ellie the choice Fireflies are supposed to be about freedom and restoring democracy And how is the first thing they think they should do to find the cure is cut her brain open and kill her How is that the first thing you try
I bought a PS5 a few months after it came out after only ever owning xbox's. TLOU was one of the games I'd been wanting to play for years. Played it for around 4 hours or so and realized I was not having fun at all. Gameplay to me was super boring. Just watched the first episode of the show and loved it so thinking about giving the game another try.
Personally I'd say, NO, but that's not to say it's not a good game. I think The Last of Us works more as a first time experience rather than a game you go back and play over and over. This is more a personal opinion, but the gameplay isn't interesting and the story is generic. But what works is the characters and their dynamic. It really tests the players goal as the games whole focus is getting Ellie to the Firefly, but over time you grow to like her and Joel as people. And at the end of the game you end up making a more selfish and realistic choice that everyone can relate to. But if you play it once you won't get that same feeling again. That's why I've personally never played it again. And I just don't find the gameplay interesting and I don't like the more hallway corridor 3rd person storytelling games. I prefer dynamic storytelling in a more explorable world.
No it's not. The gameplay is mediocre and repetitive and the story is...good. He said top 30. I can agree with that. Definitely not in the top 10 and definitely not game of the year.
My thoughts on this game have drastically changed from when I first played it on PS3 to now. When it first came out I thought the game was a masterpiece. I think that was because at the time I cared WAY more about dramatic storytelling and graphics than I did gameplay, level design, and replayability. Fast forward to today and I've yet to beat the game a second time. The gameplay loop (even for it's time) is way too basic. The story was great the first time around but on a second playthrough I was bord out of my mind. I also think the story is kinda pretentious in a lot of ways. Nowadays I consider the game to be a 6/10. A okay game that's made for normies.
Hmm... I've always been really torn on TLOU. On the one side, I'm a big defender that gameplay is by far the most important thing in games. TLOU is very polished, but conceptually, it's really not that creative or even that extremely fun to play. It's "just" very good. On the other hand, the production value is so high and the story is so good, I do remember it as one of my Top 5 games ever. But maybe that just means I need to play more games with dense, masterful game design? I would definitely not put it on my Top 5 if it wasn't for the cutscenes. At the end of the day, I have to stay true to my game design beliefs and give the original TLOU "only" an 87.
I played the game on PS4. It was a great game but I think it’s way over rated in the wrong way lately. It didn’t revolutionize anything Imo. The game play is very generic and story is good and simple. Frankly, that is exactly why I liked it: because of how simplistic and honest TLOU as a video game is. Can’t say the same to the sequel though.
I’m more of a JRPG fan but Last of Us is a top 10 video game for me. It’s the first game that I felt it had big budget movie production along with top notch writing. Absolutely brilliant.
It was just really overpriced. $70 for a game that came out in 2013 with only graphical improvements? Yeah no thanks. If it was $30 or $40 and if it was free for people who already owned LOU 1 then it would been a lot better received.
Agreed, although the second is the worst videogame sequel in the history of all eternity, the first is still a masterpiece to this day, and stands the test of time.
I’m having a hard time resisting paying $60 for the steam version coming up. I already have the game on ps4 but being able to play it in ultrawide on my pc or on the steam deck sounds amazing.
Loved it so much that I took the time to platinum it 6 times. Also I usually don’t enjoy doing anything multiplayer related but I remember being really invested in the factions stuff as well
I am 100% sure if the *spoiler* from Part II hadn’t leaked, the game would be considered a masterpiece by everyone and their mother, just like the first one.

Did I miss the part where you specifically stated what system/version of the game you are playing? PS3, PS4 remaster, PS5 remake?
Now I need to replay this again! It definitely was one of my favorite games I’ve played. Love the videos!
Love seeing Matt talk about my fav game ever :)
The answer is yes. Yes it's really that good.
Yes but you can’t say the same for the remake or part 2 unfortunately 😮💨
@@neo3429 I can.
answer is no, it’s shitty
When it comes to the ending, I agree with Joel in the end. Not because of selfishness, but because at the end of the day, we know more than ever how BS getting the cure was going to be, and I honestly would have felt much more disgusted if that loose interpretation of getting a cure had actually happened. It would have almost been insulting.
Lmao i literally just finished this game today and you drop this, perfect timing
I do think it was very good, but nowhere near as mind blowing as many people say.
@@Jackraiden500 well said my friend
You and your channels success is such a fucking inspiration. I wish I could share my collection with you. It's been growing for quite a while, and I don't have any friends who appreciate a retro collection.
This will be up there with Breath of the Wild as the most over-rated game of all time.
You dropped this video at the perfect time 😊
I had got this game as soon as I graduated high school. Definitely made my summer better playing this.
Part 2 has better mechanics
Love the golf club simulator mini game that was included in the second game
I did it immediately without thinking or regret and would do it again
Still my favourite version of the game is the OG PS3. Factions rocked and shout outs for Bioshock 2 MP love - I put hours into that - I remember decorating my apartment with winnings you could spend on furnishing. Also becoming a big daddy and having everyone teaming up on you was brilliant fun.
Why do you prefer ps3 version over ps4? Isnt it the exact same game with increased framerate?
@@XXXXX8 PS4 version didn't have the Factions multiplayer mode. But yeah, PS4 TLOU is the same game with slightly better textures and 60 fps.
Tess was never heavily focused in the promo material.... Damn... Wonder why...
This is one of my favorite games of all time
Few people talk about the opening. If it hasn’t been spoiled for you, it’s absolutely mind f’ing. Citizen Cane of video games.
Lmao
Citizen KANE?!?
Shit, I mean I respect your opinion bro.
@@SteelSpurs ha I appreciate it. But yes, for me it was mind blowing at the time
I tried playing the last of us many times. I dont know why I cant get into it. Something is wrong with me.
You sadly have bad taste this game made me fell in love with single player games before that all I played was COD, Halo, guitar hero only
There is nothing wrong with you. It's just not for you and that is fine.

That quote is sooo damn good in the intro
I now hate the word overrated. Especially when it comes to talking about video games. Oh.. I don't like a game as much as the majority does.. So I think it's OVERRATED. I really don't like Elden Ring but I definitely don't think it's an overrated game. Muppets everywhere in the comments.
Agreed most definitely.
Last of us naritive is amazing not sure the gameplay aged as well but it's still amazing and masterpiece
Agreed, story is 10/10. Gameplay is about a 7/10 for me.
@@GameTalesHQ What was wrong with the gameplay?
I hear and read so much love for this game its crazy I can't wait to try it. I hope it's not a build up game
what do you mean by build-up game?
@coocoollama64 that the gameplay don't take to long to get fun for me. Everyone plays games differently
@@EAZUP ah okay, I never heard that term before so i was confused lol! As you said, i cant tell you because i am not you but i hope you love it!
Yes. There I saved everyone’s time. Lol play this game if you haven’t
I have to say this. What was left for Joel to save by sacrificing Ellie? The world was gone.
Start by coming up with a better title.
Personally i love both games… i can’t choose between part 1 and 2.
Bought day one on the ps3 with the collectible strat guide. I kid you not I have never beating that game until it was released on the ps5 so we all know it’s been out for a min on the 3 and 4. When I tell you to me it picked up after I met Henry and bro and from that point on i story wise (haven’t beaten ragnorak yet) the best g damn story I have played when you I look back at it felt like a interactive MOVIE gotta get through part 2 . Sorry so long
I personally don't think the game was spectacular. It's like a 7.5/10 or at most 8/10. Gameplay wasn't great and the story was okay. Decent but not amazing. The game just didn't resonate well for me I guess!
That first game has a level of subtlety to both the writing and performances that I still don't think has been matched by another AAA game.
Imagine making a great game and then remake it three times and charge an extra $10 each Time You remake it if that's not milking I don't know what is
Tonight on HBO Max 0:35*
What about Dead Space 3D!?

ive been trying to get this game running on rcps3 for a while so with the steam release of the remake has me pretty excited. i think this game couldve worked as a one off.
First thought I get from the title is "how dare you?"
Yes it totally is! One of the best games I ever played in my life and the 2nd one is fantastic as well
Great game, great video. I agree with everything you said. A true classic and i still play it from time to time (remastered). Ill buy the remake when its cheap or hopefully Sony will give it away on PS+.
Joel was being selfish saving Ellie but the fireflies were not in the right either
Ellie would have chosen to sacrifice herself but they never gave her a chance to make that choice, that's what always stuck with me was I would make the choice Joel does because they didn't give Ellie the choice
Fireflies are supposed to be about freedom and restoring democracy
And how is the first thing they think they should do to find the cure is cut her brain open and kill her
How is that the first thing you try
I bought a PS5 a few months after it came out after only ever owning xbox's. TLOU was one of the games I'd been wanting to play for years. Played it for around 4 hours or so and realized I was not having fun at all. Gameplay to me was super boring. Just watched the first episode of the show and loved it so thinking about giving the game another try.
Honestly, and succinctly... YES.
I played the PS5 remake. Everything was fantastic.
I honestly love the gameplay in part 2 it’s so gruesome and tense
Yep the gameplay in part 2 is even better than part 1.
Yes Matty TLOU is that good, dare I say phenomenal. Great content as always man.
The first one was great but i liked part 2 better
Really!? I really liked part 2 besides the negative stuff that I totally agree… but part 1 just hit the feels man…
No it's not. The gameplay is mediocre and repetitive and the story is...good.
He said top 30. I can agree with that.
Definitely not in the top 10 and definitely not game of the year.
I agree 💯
TLOU ended the PS3 era it’ll go down in time for a while.
Isn't this supposed to be a retro channel
The remake was amazing, not sure why people were so negative about it getting a facelift.
I'd say mainly just the 70 price but we've all played the story before. If you don't want to pay 70 then wait for a sale
Cause it was $70 for less game
I mean if it was like 40 dollars it would be worth it
It was just really overpriced. $70 for a game that came out in 2013 with only graphical improvements? Yeah no thanks. If it was $30 or $40 and if it was free for people who already owned LOU 1 then it would been a lot better received.
Short answer,,, NO
regardless of how horrid the second game was this game will always be one of the greatest of all time
Thought the second was better than the first.🤷♂️ Both still extremely overrated games.
Agreed, although the second is the worst videogame sequel in the history of all eternity, the first is still a masterpiece to this day, and stands the test of time.
@@VintageFiendClub absolutely
The ending Joel and Ellie wore both going to be killed by the firefly's he made the wrong choice they wore terrorists
The Last of Us is that good, and the 2nd is a worthy sequel.
Yes absolutely
I’m having a hard time resisting paying $60 for the steam version coming up. I already have the game on ps4 but being able to play it in ultrawide on my pc or on the steam deck sounds amazing.

Ign says the show is bringing back zombie madness to your door once again. I played the ps5 version on hard for the first time it was good
Loved it so much that I took the time to platinum it 6 times.
Also I usually don’t enjoy doing anything multiplayer related but I remember being really invested in the factions stuff as well
Why just why would you platinum something 6 times.
It's good but definitely overhyped
How many no's do you want?
It’s my favourite game of all time
Short answer: No.
The single player is very overrated in my opinion.
My favorite game of all time. ❤
I am 100% sure if the *spoiler* from Part II hadn’t leaked, the game would be considered a masterpiece by everyone and their mother, just like the first one.
Top 30 game yet your thumbnail is like you hate it...
It’s the only game where you don’t realize you’re actually playing a tragic villain instead of a hopeful hero.
