I had that game...I was 12yrs old and loved it. Thanks for posting
Thank you for checking out the video. I appreciate it 😊
Yeah - I had one of those to.
I have this game with its original box and instructions!
Back in 1977 I watched Battlestar Galactica and loved it and still do, I got the game for my birthday, it was the first electronic game I owned and I played it for hours, we thought a lot of batteries and literally wore this game out, I still remember my last game on this hand held playing it in the school yard in the early 1980s when it finally died never to go again.
Now let’s jump ahead 35 years when eBay had just started up and I’m looking for stuff and suddenly I come across one of these in its box in Italy and had to have it, and get it out now and then for a game down memory lane,
Thanks for sharing.
What a cool memory! Awesome. I love living through memories like yours and others that shared here. It was meant to be for you to get reunited 35 years later 🥰. Thanks for sharing yours!
I had this stolen during the S.A.T. school sessions...but MAN! did it get replaced. A high school friend(different school) recently moved out of the family home, and he brought me some of the most precious artifacts. Among the Green Hornet mug and Man from UNCLE badge was this game...original box, styrofoam inside...and the price sticker, which was bought from the same store as mine.
$22.99.
My Mom must have spoiled me. I remember so many of these games. The sounds are what just bring you back.
What a great mom! You make a good point. I think back to some of the games I did own as a kid and I can easily remember the sounds it makes. I never thought of that, lol. Thanks!
Whoever wrote "Return to Earth" had obviously never seen the show.
Yup. I missed that myself but you and some others here were keen to point that out. All I noticed was how the numbering in the scoring range didn't make sense, haha. Thank you!
I was a huge Battlestar fan, and I had this game. I played it for hours upon hours, and was so proud of myself for mastering it. Seeing your video brought back some good memories. Sadly I don't have mine anymore. I actually did see one for sale recently a local place. I might have to stop back and buy it if it's still there.
Thanks for sharing! I'm happy the video brought back some good memories. Never can get enough of those. Actually a few weeks ago I just started to build mine with this game. 😀
Wow I remember playing this when it first came out! When you started playing the game I actually remember the sound from it all those years ago, great stuff.
You have great auditory memory 😀. I guess repetition will do that which means this game was a winner! I'm glad to have it now even if I came late to the party, lol. Thanks for comment.
I was a big fan of early Mattel Electronics games. My cousin sold me his Battlestar Galactica game for $3 around 1980. I pull it out and play it every so often.
Wow, nice deal! I guess that would be like a little over $11 in today's money 😊. That's awesome you can relive a small part of your childhood with the actual handheld from over 40 years ago! Thanks for sharing that.
Thanks for this! I’d totally forgotten that I owned one of these back in the day! Great memories,
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. That puts a smile on my face! 😃
I had this game and played this as a child. I was 7 years old.
That's a great early memory to have as a child. I love that it remains with you today 😁
I JUST dug mine from out of a box a couple days ago. Sublime timing on the video… Had it since it childhood, played the hell out of the game, and surprise… also a missing battery cover. Gonna keep this video saved for the repair/touch up (I did take it apart back in high school, thinking I could modify it to mount on dash and blast drivers who annoyed me in the car. Glad I didn’t proceed beyond opening it up. Ha ha) It does work, but contacts are stiff. Thank you for this memory blast! (PS: Press fire in center position when starting game. Instant “6” to start. I think there was a pattern the first couple moves… only been a few decades, but I was always at “20” by enemy 4-5.)
The stars were aligned! How funny but cool is that. I'm glad to hear you still have yours and that it was cherished back then. Yeah, I was able to get the first shot immediately at center when powered on but so far my best is only 72. Reading that some here have scored a perfect 120 is getting me encouraged try again 🙂. I'm glad you liked the video. I appreciate it and thanks for sharing your memories.
Got this for Christmas 78. Played it a lot through 79, 80.
I was the cool kid in school, bringing it with me.
The Mattel, Coleco handhelds and tabletops were the Big gaming thing prior to the rise of tv consoles
I'm amazed at how many here got it on Christmas 78. I must have been on the naughty list 😢. The evolution of game play during our childhood was awesome! Thanks for sharing your memories.
When I was a kid, you could get most of these games at Radio Shack. I had most of them, but the one's that were most popular were the 2 person games. I loved how the buttons sounded, everything was built so well, they really took a lot of abuse ^^ I may still have a few of the old football games, but the really fun ones I ended up selling at garage sales along the years, forgetting to take the batteries out as a kid, most needed a lot of help :\
Agreed! I found that the 2 player games and the Coleco tabletops were favorites with my friends and cousins. I never thought about the quality but you make a great observation. As I look at the ones I've acquired, not a single one had an issue with the plastic being brittle or looking weakened.
Radio Shack sure was a techie paradise for us kids 🤓. Also the Sears Christmas and Wishbook were great for dreamers - www.wishbookweb.com/the-catalogs/
My older brother had this game and I used to love it. Funny how much our imagination would compensate for these lo-fi games in the 70’s. Thanks for showing the inside of this thing and providing some insight on how it works. Very cool to see. 🎉
Thank you for the nice feedback. I'm glad you liked it. You're so right that games like this required our part with the imagination. That might have been a good thing because we would move onto something else and not be glued to it for weeks, lol.
My friend had that game when we were 16. Nice to see one working again. thanks, nice video.
Thank you. I'm glad you liked the video 🙂
I still have that handheld game - somewhere. I remember staying up late at night playing the baseball and football versions.
It's so funny to recall how we used to try and muffle the sounds from these games with our pillow or blankets when we were supposed to be in bed on a school night. At least that's what I experienced, haha. Thanks for sharing that comment.
I still have mine! A guy in class brought one to school in 5th grade. He wouldn't share so I snuck it out of his pack and played anyways. Got sent to the principles office for that. So I begged my parents until they got me one. I took good care of all my stuff so it still works today. Mine didn't come with a wallwart. Have a couple other handhelds from my childhood like Football II, Baseball, and a space invader clone from Tandy I think. Oh and Pocket Simon.
I love that story. You got in trouble in the beginning but through persistence you achieved your goal 😃. That's also a nice bundle of handhelds to cover sports, aliens and memory challenge! Thanks for sharing.
So cool that this appeared in my suggested videos; we had this, still do somewhere. We played it endlessly, along with the Merlin handheld and it's funny how quickly we figured out patterns in these games, and others.
Thank you. I'm glad you liked the video. I'm starting to get feedback on hints/tips so I need to try to figure the pattern and get that perfect score now 😁
I had one when I was a kid.. it was amazing until I ended up breaking it. Many memories thanks for making a video about it.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Sorry to hear the game didn't make it to present time but the good thing is it's still available on eBay if one every wanted it 😉. Thanks again for checking out the video.
Mattel made some fun handhelds back in 70s. I loved this game and Football 2.
You're so right on that. I checked my "inventory list" of handhelds and of the 11 Mattel handhelds I own, all 11 were made from 1976-1979 😲
Such an awesome collection, I may still have that game packed up in a box. I saw your Invaders from space game on the shelf (which sadly I no longer have) but back in the day those games were just so much fun. Great video and brings back great memories.
Thank you so much! I love my collection but I really envy those like you who were the original owners and got to experience it first hand when it came out. Thanks for watching.
@@VintageGamingMemories Really enjoy it and thanks for the comment and kind words. One of my prized possessions from when I was 14 years old is my Mattel Electronics LCD Dungeons & Dragons game. It's mint in its box and every once in a while I break it out and play it for hours. My wife used to ask me what's with that silly old game? So, I gave it to her and showed her how to play it and well a few hours later she gave it back. Now she gets it. Kids today don't know what they missed. Please keep making the great things you create because it is very much appreciated.
I've got mine still in mint condition, and was a huge fan of the original Battlestar Galactica. Great review and how to clean it up .
I'm so glad you liked the video. I really appreciate the support and I'm very impressed you have yours in mint condition! Nice job!
I had this one at Xmas in 1978 - I wish I still had it, and my Star Wars Electronic Battle Command, Galaxy Invader 1000 (that you recently reviewed), Astro Wars, Grandstand Pocket Pacman and Merlin.
You got it when it just came out! Nice! Also looks like you had a nice set of games back then. I don't have the Star Wars one but it's on my list to get. Thanks for sharing.
@@VintageGamingMemories It's just a shame I never kept hold off all of them, and the likes of action figures such as Star Wars (sold here in the UK by Palitoy rather than Kenner) - who would have realised have valuable and collectable they all would be these days, I sure could kick myself sometimes!!! I don't recall asking my parents for Star Wars Electronic Battle Command but I got it for Xmas in 77 or 78, I guess my parents just bought anything with "Star Wars" on it! It's not a bad game, kind of Chess meets Minesweeper as I remember - I'm sure you'll have fun if you manage to get hold of one 😉
HAD ONE AND LOVED IT...the only game i EVER just simply wore out!!!!!
Nice! That's a true testament on how good that game is. Thanks for sharing that memory.
This is history, you are doing a great job of keeping it alive!
Thank you so much for the positive feedback! I appreciate it. Memories are priceless.
I had it. Don't think I still do and if I do, I know it doesn't work. I wore it out as a kid.
Loved that thing.
My old Football II still worked last time I saw it.
That's an honorable way to have ended its use 😄. Thanks for sharing!
I loved this game as a kid. I did not own one, but several friends did and lots of kids brought it to school as it was so small and portable and easily hidden in a winter coat pocket. Mattel did bet on Galactica being a hit TV show, but they invested very little money to do so as they were already producing this game under a different name in white plastic, so the only changes were body color, stickers, and packaging. Your printed battery cover came out great, I especially like the detail on the inside of the battery shapes. Another option would have been forming a cover from a sheet of styrene. The YT channel Toy Polloi fixes a lot of electronic toys with missing battery covers, so he has several videos detailing exactly how he does it. For someone of your skill level and assuming you will eventually run across a great game with a very visible plastic body defect, I think you will find his methods extremely interesting as the styrene maintains the smooth look of the original plastic.
Yes, you're right. I missed that point about Mattel producing Missile Attack prior to slapping on the new name. Interesting back story on it from Handheld Museum about the little city on the bottom that was removed (handheldmuseum.com/Mattel/MissileAttack.htm). You mentioning about bringing these to school had me thinking that I totally missed out on that. I was probably more worried I'd lose it than get caught.
Thanks for the YT channel. I was checking it out and really good stuff there! Definitely going to absorb it all. Thanks for the great feedback!
I loved mine so much. Being small I took it everywhere. Protip, the first 3 Cylons aren't random.
Hmmmm. I know the first appears center all the time. I will have to check it out again to see where the 2nd and 3rd ones appear. Thanks for that!
Amazing! I didn't know of this game's existence. Back in the day I had a BSG jacket with the funky clasps that was the envy of my classmates!
That Facebook group I mentioned in the video is really opening my eyes to a lot of cool games I never knew existed. Btw, is this the same type of BSG jacket you had? www.amazon.com/Battlestar-Galactica-Jacket-Men-Warriors/dp/B0BD5W716M
@@VintageGamingMemories Not quite that nice - wish I still had it! Going to look on eBay for that game...
Played the heck out of mine as a kid. I do remember getting a high score of 89 a few times, never could get any higher.
You ranked "Space Commander"! Great memory to remember your best score too 😊
I played with that BG game for HOURS and HOURS. Taking breaks to pay with the Coleco Football. I wish I still had it, but on storage the batteries ruptured (back in the 90s) and I never suspected it would have any value.
Thanks for the memory!
Oh no. Did you ever get the perfect score which I think would have been 120 (6pts x 20 Cylon Raiders)? I know, who would have thought that after all those years these games would have so much value outside of sentimental value. Thanks for sharing!
oh geesh, I had one of these as a kid. The Tron too.
That's a nice combo with the Tomy Tron. I love how these classic shows/movies got transferred into handheld games back then.
I had this as a kid. Thanks for the memories.
It was my pleasure. I'm glad you liked the video. By the way, great channel you have there! 😉
Wow, had that. thanks for the flashback.
Thanks for checking out the video. I appreciate it 😊
Still have it with box, mint. My most beloved childhood game. Easy to memorize though and shoot them down just when they appear. Never parted with the game, never will.
Excellent attitude! I'm with you. I honestly didn't know if I'd like this game but after making the video (which was my first experience with it), I was hooked. Maybe partially because I had to open it up and fix it 😀.
@@VintageGamingMemories It's Battlestar Galactica and that makes it cool. I used a little Lego head on the lever to be faster, gave me an easier, faster way to move.
I had that game when I( was a junior in high school. Played it on the bus when I would come home from Vo_tech school in evening.
That's a cool memory! I'm guessing its sounds would have been muffled by the sounds on the bus so no one would have even known 😁. Great way to pass time! Thanks for sharing.
Nice work!
Thanks for the support!
I still have mine, my parents bought it for me back in the late 70's.
Nice! That's going to be a family heirloom 😊!
thanks for the video!
I''m glad you liked it. I appreciate it.
I bought one of these a couple years back also missing the battery plate. I wanted this when it came out because I wanted something to play with on my long ride to school. I would be going into high school in 1980 and this was still available (I think, I could be wrong) but my parents got me this red tank combat game instead. So dissappointed. You have a remarkable collection. Impressive.
Thank you so much for the feedback and sharing your past. I always wondered about these missing battery covers. Is it the result of being worn out and just not staying intact or are kids just accidently losing them, lol. Either way, thankful for 3D printers today.
Got one in my E junk drawer! Will have to dig a battery out for it.
Oh yes. Energize it to see if it works 😁
The things that entertained us back then...Lol!
How about it. Simplier times... simplier life... simplier fun. I need more of that 😉
I had one of these. The most I think I ever scored was 65, the record at my school was 83.
It only looks small in adult hands :-D
Amazing it got popular enough to have people at the school compete for the high score! I had to check the size again and I guess my Samsung cell is larger and so is my wallet, haha. Thanks for sharing that cool memory.
I movie War Games could have been based on my life. I was doing exactly what he was in the late seventies and eighties. Also, I remember this game, but sadly I never bought it.
I love that! It sure was a great era to grow up in. We couldn't get away with half of those things today, lol. Thanks for the comment.
@@VintageGamingMemories I was a surreal ride tho.
How did it get transported back to the UK? I would understand if it went by private plane, considering it's worth. Well worth the 20K or so.
You are so lucky to have had this for a minute. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Priceless 🙂. Thanks for checking it out!
Deja Vu. I think I had that game as a kid.
I hope this triggered good memories 🙂
Great memories.
Merry making.
I'm glad you like it. I always believe we need more good memories even if it comes from an electronic toy. Thanks!
I HAD THAT ONE 😊 COOL STUFF
It appears many people liked and had this game from the past too. As I made this video, it was my first chance to play it and I can see why 😁. Thanks!
I still have mine from 1978.
Nice! Don't let it go 😉
Very much like the racing game i once had. Had the same side to side control. The game i really wanted, which was of similar construction, was football, but it was more expensive.
Yes, Mattel's Auto Race game. Funny how reusing these shells worked for many games. I felt that those which were unique in its appearance got an added point of interest from me even if the game play was not up to par, lol. Thanks for sharing!
I had one of those as a kid and how I wish now that I had hung onto it.
I know that feeling. At least you could still try to get one today but it's not the same thing, I get that ☹
The form factor and controls are very similar to the Mattel Electronics Racing game I had as a kid. But at least that had 4 speeds.
Great observation! I didn't realize that until you noted it. That Mattel Auto Race came out in 1976, a couple years earlier than this game. Thanks for sharing that.
I had this, at the end I could hit all missiles at 6. it had basically only a few variant of the attack patterns which I could determine by what column the first missile would appear. So the first shot was just luck to get a 6.
I remember getting perfect scores often, but now I wonder how that would be represented on those 2 7-segment led displays. Can the one on the left able to display a 1 next to the 7-segment display to show 120?
Excellent! I wondered if anyone watching had ever scored a perfect 120. I read one can figure the patterns but I had not played it enough to get to that comfort level. Great question on the scores over 99. It uses the left 7-segment display to illustrate the 100s and 10s positions while the right 7-segment would be for the 1s position. I have a couple games like this one where it would use the left one to make an "A" for 100, "B" for 110, "C" for 120, etc. and the right one would be the actual number from 0-9 for the 1s position. e.g. A5 for 105 and C0 for 120. Thanks for the comment.
@@VintageGamingMemories Cool. Yeah, I guess that was it (C0). my memory is stuck seeing 99 for some reason. Man I played that thing for a whole year, even got a power brick from radio shack that looks like the one there lol.
I owned and played this game back in the day...
having said that...
the "return to Earth" being the lowest score... heck no, that should be the HIGHEST SCORE... the whole point of the series was to GET TO EARTH!
Hahaha, excellent point! Too funny 😆
I got that one for Christmas when I was a kid, I've still got it somewhere up in the loft, It was still working the last time I played it, unfortunately all the stickers came off.
I hope you can still find it. Reading yours and others about having their games from childhood is really cool. I have zero of my handhelds. My parents either gave them away for free or threw them out, sad. At least my son will have something when he gets older 😊
❤
The plot of the TV series is to get to Earth. Does that mean you want to score under 25?😄
Haha, when I made the video that didn't even occur to me. I guess it could have read, "Return to Twelve Colonies of Mankind" 😃
I opened mine up around 1984 and modded it to make different led patterns- as a teen lol
Whoa.... that's amazing! Awesome innovation of a young mind 😃 I'm guessing it wasn't your last mod either.
@@VintageGamingMemories lol no- and now i have piles of unsellable junk, but its my junk :D
I had that game !!!!
It's amazing to see how many people had this. I'm in the minority who just got exposed to this cool game 45 years later, lol. Better late than never I suppose 😁. Thanks for the comment!
I wish they'd make modern versions of hand held games like this. Still use LEDs, but many more and multicolor ones to denounce different sides and a bit more logic and ram. They could really redo the classic sports games like the classic Mattel Football, but instead of the original 10x3 pixels, I would like 30X9.
That's an interesting idea. I haven't found anyone or company that has tapped into that idea. Everything now is more towards making "old concept" work on "new technology" like putting a Raspberry Pi in old shells. I like your idea. Maybe I'm wrong and there is something out there.🤔
@@VintageGamingMemories Maybe one of the Tech Tubers like Ben Heck will make something like this reproducable.
@@VintageGamingMemories With PCBWay and 3d printing a skilled tech-tuber like you or Ben Heck could have Retro-Football RGB designed in a weekend. Unfortunately, I lack the skills in programming and 3D modeling. I can learn anything, but don't have time available.
The irony is that having many separate LEDs and custom overlay, would cost more these days than just having a colour LCD. You could easily recreate something that looks like this with a pi zero or something.
@@rakido7388 I believe you. a R36S handheld retro console only cost me $42 delivered and has a beautiful screen.
I still nostalgia for a dedicated, nearly indestructable plastic toy Football game with real buttons. Though, with 300 color pixels instead of 30 red ones and two player of course.
I had this as a kid.
I actually managed to get the highest possible score a few times.
That's great achievement because I don't think it's as easy as one might think 🏆. I might have to put more hours into it and see how close I can get 😊.
@@VintageGamingMemories thanks.
I really played it incessantly after school.
Yup, good times.
Well said!
Ohh, I had this as a kid. Was a lot of fun until I learned the patterns. ;)
lol, I think I've read a couple people mentioning the patterns. I have to see how easy it is to uncover that as I play some more.
My cousin also sold me his Battlestar Galactica game in '82 for $3.
I have this. Battery panel is missing but it still works.
I see your battery panel is missing too.
@@darthamar4042 12:19 Yes, but at this point of the video you can see the 3D printed cover I printed which seems to do the job 😉 . I typically don't buy games without the covers but couldn't resist with this one.
@@VintageGamingMemories Could we arrange for you to send me one? I've owned mine by proxy since it was new. Was originally my brother's. I was a huge BSG fan. Liked it better than Star Wars as a kid. Still do.
Where did you find battery cover stl
My bad. I originally had it in the video and I must have edited it out by accident. I got it from Thingiverse www.thingiverse.com/thing:778053
They seem really small now until I remember holding them in my 12 year old hands.
lol. true! I have my 11 year old as my tester with these games so I see that often 😀
I have the original of this before the Battlestar Galactica branding.
Now that is a nice rarity! I'm guessing you're referring to Mattel's Missile Attack? I'm in pursuit of one 🙂
@@VintageGamingMemories Yep, that's the one. I received it for a gift one birthday or Christmas, and I learned the pattern to get the high score. I wonder if the Battlestar Galactica one has the same pattern.
I had this.
Nice! I'm starting to think I was one of the last ones to get this, lol.
DUDE!
👍lol
@@VintageGamingMemories super nostalia blast to my face, thanks!
strange it has the rockwell international symbol on the circuit board.
Nice call out! I see it now that you mentioned it. This game is space related and from wiki it says Rockwell International was involved with "aircraft, the space industry, ..." so that makes perfect sense, haha. Thanks for pointing that out.
Rockwell had a decent presence in the microchip business in the 70s. Even into the 80s and 90s, they made a LOT of modem chipsets among others.
I still have that in my closet. I should dig it out.
Most definitely, At least to see if it works and then to play a game to honor the 45 year anniversary of when the last episode of the original series aired, lol. === April 29, 1979 ===
Gamers these days don’t know how good they have it. Look at what we had for entertainment in the 70s 😅
So true 😁. It sure was fun to watch the foundation being laid down to get to where gaming is today.
My brother had one. Don't remember what happened to it.
A lost treasure 😟. Doing these videos I find myself trying to revisit my childhood in my head to see if I remember who got my stuff or if I destroyed it with my careless play, lol.
I bought a Battle star Tactics and a Space Invaders game when I was in college.
And they sucked looking back. They used 7 segment number display boards used in calculators at the time.that
Awww really? Despite my first experience with this game was a few weeks ago, I still think it was creative and entertaining.
I owned it but was disappointed and returned it. I’ve had better Christmas gifts.
I'm guessing you were a kid when you got this? Lucky you because I'm sure I never got the option to have a Christmas gift returned/exchanged, lol.
I hacked mine to play Doom.
Not a really bad trade off 🙂
Got it in '78 and still own it. Hint: depress the fire button while turning it on to score a 6.
I envy you! That's really cool. I love reading that you and some others have their originals still because it makes me appreciate this game that much more! Thanks for the hint. I have to try that tonight.
*Update* - Tried that hint and yes you are correct. Just have to make sure your level is in the middle position for when it fires upon turning it on. Thanks for that hint!
I got one of these for Christmas when I was a kid. Had a couple of the sports handheld games too, baseball and football.
That shows it was special enough to gift at Christmas :) That's a nice addition to mix into the sports related games. Thanks for sharing that memory!
