  • Mattel puts you in a cockpit view to destroy as many alien spaceships in 4 minutes! The view and premise is quite refreshing to what we often see with space alien games. This game will have you coming back for more.

    What an AWESOME game for 1981! Very ahead of its time. I love these VFD games and will be on the lookout for Star Hawk now thanks to your video. 👾

      I really appreciate the feedback! We were blessed with so many handhelds during the late 70s and 80s but some just stood out and I think this might be one of them 😁. I hope you get your hands on one. Thanks again.

      Yeah the VFD technology really was superior to the LCDs that replaced them. No backlight needed and could have multiple colors.

    OMG!!! I HAD THIS!! I LOVED THIS GAME!!
    Wow, it's astonishing how something can completely slip out of your brain over the decades never to be able to unlock itself, but as soon as you see it again it all floods forth like "how in the world did I forget this???!"
    Great video!

      Thanks so much for the feedback. I love it when it brings back a memory for someone. I can't tell you how many times I get a flashback of something because I was reminded of it from another vintage item I picked up. It's like they're all connected in someway 😁.

      @@VintageGamingMemories Exactly. It's so funny also how just the aesthetics and art design built into old treasures like this will have enmeshed itself into your subconscious preferences later in life. I remember admiring the manner they used the limitations with the graphics very creatively, like how the red lights served as the horizon, the runway, the bullets, and even the flickering thrusters on the enemy craft. I remember wishing there was some way to look out of the cockpit other directions, but when a game is fun regardless, it's a mark of excellence. Being a half-ass art-minded kid myself, I remember wishing they had a different approach to the explosions. I wish, instead of the rays that converge in the center, they had instead had concentric circles (rings) blowing outwards/larger from the center. I think that woulda looked better,... but I seem to have not been invited to the designers' brainstorm sessions. LOL. Anyway, the few games with real-lighted displays like this also served nicely as toys, like I'd arrange them along the "walls" of the tall Mattel Death Star playset to appear like computer displays, etc. for the figures. Fun times.

      @@Cre80s I totally envisioned what you mentioned, lol. The funny thing is when I made this video in my workshop, I had a small sense of realism with the concept of takeoff-flight-fight-landing. Probably because my workshop has no windows and I had the lights down and I was very tired 🤣. I would love to have heard meetings on these game designs too. Thanks!

      Agreed! Mattel did good with this one but I wondered if they could have added something more to fill the void/blank space to the left of the display. A lot of wasted real estate?

    I am just the tiniest bit too young for this, it really is fascinating to me that I would have experienced something this depthful this early. This is on a par with game and watch stuff from several years later. Very fun looking.

      I don't have many G&W items. I think only 2 but I like Nintendo's intent for being unique. Just like this one. Thanks for checking out the video.

    I forgot about this one. One of these days, I need to make a road trip to visit the museum you are building (whether you know you are building or not).

    Wow! I vaguely remember this game. I had it when i was little. I remember it being so bulky compared to the LCD based Tiger Electronics ones my brother had

      Thanks for checking this out. You're right about it being bulky. I should had mentioned that it didn't have a great feel in my hands when I played it off camera as a "handheld" but in the video I had it on the table top so it was okay.

    Star Raiders boiled down into a handheld game.

    I love the name "Star Hawk". What did you use to buff the scratches out of the screen? Also love that you used like an outerspace backdrop for the gameplay footage, that is such a cool nice touch!

    • @VintageGamingMemories
      @VintageGamingMemories  Місяць тому +2

      Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video. Yes, 'Star Hawk' is definitely a catchy name. Makes you wonder what it's all about if you had not seen it before. For the scratches I use the Novus plastic polish products - novuspolish.com/
      You can also get this on Amazon for $20-25. Novus 1 was all I needed with this item but for deeper scratches you'd use Novus 2 and 3. It's an awesome product that I've been using for years going back to cleaning my pinball playfield. Thanks!

      @@VintageGamingMemories I'd love to know more about how you cleaned the chassis itself? (Not the display - Novus is amazing.) :)

    • @VintageGamingMemories
      @VintageGamingMemories  Місяць тому

      @@GregMaletic Believe it or not, I'm pretty simple when it comes to cleaning the "plastic" / chassis. If there's no delicate stickers on it, I first start with disinfecting wipes that are bleach-free (e.g Clorox). I dry it down then I'll go with the Novus 1 also on the plastic/chassis. If I want it to pop a little, I will use Armor All afterwards. Sometimes the not-so-bright shine on plastic is more like how it was originally. I've never had any paint or blemishes with this method of cleaning but I never buff it too fast or with too much pressure to cause that to happen. Also everything is wiped and polished with using plush microfiber towels to avoid scratches or swirl marks. I think a couple of my first videos I might have shown this method but since then I've edited out to get right to the video content. Thanks for asking and for checking the video out. I appreciate it!

    Question, does that battery corrosion advance even after the bad batteries are removed until it is cleaned or does it all just stop not worsening until it's cleaned?

    • @VintageGamingMemories
      @VintageGamingMemories  Місяць тому +1

      Since that corrosion is a form of chemical reaction, it would not advance unless the leaking battery remains. It can however weaken the terminals because current will continue to pass when a battery (good or damaged) is in place with the existing corrosion. It can also affect a battery's casing when in contact and then may create a leak. I always remove batteries on items I rarely use or I use a no-leak / lithium type battery when possible. Great question.

    Was this made for Mattel by Epoch?

    • @VintageGamingMemories

      Not that I am aware of or found any info online about that. Was there a simiilar Epoch game to this that made you think that? Thanks.

    Guessing you meant metres and not miles .... also you can't have an altitude unless it is relevant to a physical body or planet :)

    • @VintageGamingMemories
      @VintageGamingMemories  13 днів тому +1

      Haha.. No, I did mean miles and not metres. You'd have to figure even at the maximum height/distance in the game which is 99,999 miles it's not that crazy because earth to the moon is over 225,000 miles and we're talking about space fighters going against alien spaceships, lol. Plus it does state miles in the manual. But with altitude, it can be "thought of as an abstract concept" so no revelance to a physical body or planet. Thanks for getting me to use my grey matter.

    • @50factsabout

      @@VintageGamingMemories thank you for a very engaging reply too. I wasn't trying to be a smart ass about it .... I hadn't really thought about what I said about altitude until it was in terms of being in outer space as such until today either :)

      @@50factsabout Oh no, I liked your comment because it did have me thinking whether it should be metres or miles and if altitude made sense 😃 Good stuff! Thanks for that.
