    My dad had one of these -- thanks for this! It would've been a sin *not* to have polished the woodgrain-veneer plastic.

    It's worth noting that weather radios are not by any means obsolete. The Wireless Emergency Alerts system that allows our smartphones to warn us of a hazard can fail for any number of reasons, and you can only reliably hear a tornado siren when you're outside. Redundancy is very important when it comes to this. You can get a modern NOAA Weather Radio that has SAME functionality, which will allow the radio to remain silent until it hears an alert for your area, only then activating.

      Absolutely. I live the world of redundancy and failover for a living so I'm with you! Thanks for your excellent advice in your comments. It also reminded me that I need to find my hand crank radio that I "think" is a NOAA one 😁
