We are mid 50's, We have 95 acres woods and hills in Ky., 75 miles from where we now live. And we've talked about selling our home and 2 acres here, to relocate to the farm. You all have inspired me to just rip it off like a band aid and sellout here to move to the farm. I have a tractor and sawmill already. Thanks for the encouragement! Good luck n God Bless you.
Can you record your journey in a video series to inspire others as well?
I will help you build it for 5 acres of land at opposite end..ehh
Isn't Ky the state with all the windstorms as of late ? Is your property still fully with you . . . or, has it blown away, NON-Lol ! 😬 🇺🇸
Who're the kids gonna play with ? 😬
@@paulsuprono7225 nature…..
As a professional builder I felt watching for a while that this was gonna take so long and be so labour intensive for you guys...
Then I realised that unlike me, for you the process is what you're enjoying, not getting it finished asap and moving onto the next one.
Its amazing what you can achieve when you are patient and methodical and just keep going.
So why would they get rid of their radial arm saw if they intend building a new cabin ? Do they not have power? Buy a genset !
Everyone underestimates how hard concrete work is until they've done it.
In my country, such reinforcements would not go through.
@@tuomasandfolkmusic Probably the American way....
I love what they are doing but not the way they are doing it. Should have brought in another professional and before they started building.
yeah only 8-10 years before moving in on their snail passe xD
I remember when you were in Arizona wanting to pay off bills so you could buy land and move. Now look at you guys all in Arkansas getting it done . Proud of all of you , and so happy you are living your dream . 💕💕💕
These people need to get their lives plugged BACK into the grid where they BELONG.
Welcome to Arkansas.....it's pretty amazing I moved from So Cal In 2009 the Best decision of my life...life is so much simpler here.
My wife and I sold our house, paid off debt and purchased 20 acres of bare land. I just watched this video and I gotta say, I'm so inspired! I can't wait to break ground on our land this coming spring! Subbed and following your journey!
I remember when I first started watching you in Az . You were talking about paying off bills so you could move, after watching all of this it’s amazing how much you have done in a year . You guys deserve a lot of praise. Thx for taking me along on this journey, I’m looking to the future for your family God bless you all 💕🙏💕🙏💕
A shining example of what love and family is all about. Love your kids both families!
Indeed it was a year my friends..but guess what we made it to 2022..To God be the glory🙏♥️..We all looking forward to a good year🙌🙏♥️♥️
The answer to the question “what would you do if you weren’t afraid” is this right here! Keep living the dream guys, you are doing what only a few people will ever experience. #makeyourownluck.
This is just so dang wholesome. Best wishes to you and your beautiful family!
You all sure found the right people to build your roads and get water. Crazy how much progress from your first campfire on raw land to where you are now. All of you have worked very hard including CRC.
When I stumbled on to this video, i was expecting that you were going to build a bushcraft log cabin. All I can say is wow. If I were a younger man, I'd do the same thing you're doing right now
I personally think it’s a blessing that the first concrete pour failed. Because giving it extra thickness and having professionals come finish it will give it a lot more strength. The strength is in the foundation anyway. Excited to see where this is going to go. All the best from Australia.
Aussie too Hi. I couldn't see what failed, haven't finished watching, thought I would see if it says in comments, so what happened, I have no idea how to build. lol. ;)
@@cindyw6621 They attempted the foundation pour on their own. Mis calculated the amount of concrete required, so ran short. If you finish the next day or after, cold joins aren’t good for concrete. Plus struggled with finishing and height from what I saw. Got professionals in to redo and finish to spec. Will be even better now. What part of Aus you from?
@@WHIKID1 Thank you so much, I am SE QLD. And yeah, had absolutely no clue, but loved seeing it in time lapse. :) Beenleigh.
@@cindyw6621 I know Beenleigh. I’m originally from the Redlands/Bayside area.
If I could “like” this 100 times, I would! You guys have come so far and done so much to be proud of! Lots more to do but you have your whole hearts in it and I can’t wait to see what ‘22 has in store! Great job guys! 🥰🥰🥰
Look how far you came in a " short," time that felt like eternity! Go get it! Your dream is unfolding, one petal at a time.
Don't let that concrete pour issue get you down. I'm 58 years old and a construction contractor that grew up in the trades. Concrete is hard, plain and simple! People don't realize it simply by watching a video, but when your hands-on in it there's a lot going on and it's happening a lot faster than you realize. That being said the pros you brought in did a nice job reworking your footers and pouring a good finished slab. I built my own three-story house almost completely by myself over the course of three years while working in the construction trades to earn a living . I did it because I wanted that pride and satisfaction that I knew I did it mostly by myself. It will be interesting to see your progress and I'll keep watching. Best of luck to you!
You guy's have come such a long way in a short amount of time. Love watching your progress. Plus you have your brother there with you, and now your mom too. I'd say you are truly blessed. I think your 2022 year will not disappoint. Can't wait to watch you build your future home. Love you guys.
Absolutely amazing how for you guys have made in such short time this video was awesome.I am so glad you put it together. We can't wait to see everything you get done 2022.
You two make a fantastic team! So excited to be on this journey with y’all! ❤️
What a great way to recap everything you all have accomplished. It was truly a labor of love watching start to finish. As your daughter said : TEAM WORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK. You all should be super proud of yourselves. Can't wait to see what 2022 brings. I will be there watching. Happy New Year . 😍😍😍
You guys have accomplished so much in a short period of time. I love watching you build your life and family together. Many blessings 🙏❤️ for 2022!
Happy New Year SLR Family🎉
What an awesome year. So much has been accomplished. Y’all amaze me!!!
An amazing look into your last year. You have worked so hard to get where you guys are now. I am so proud of you guys. Sending hugs from New Zealand xx
The best recap I've seen. It's easy to get down on yourself when things seem to be slow but this really shows the enormous amount you've accomplished this year. Wow! Stay strong and proud. And you're great examples to your children.
Wow it's amazing how much you guys have got done can't wait to see the rest of the progress God bless
So nice to see someones dream come true. My late wife and I had planned to do something like that 20 years ago but life got in the way. We wanted to move from Arizona to some where cooler and build a house but just didn't happen. I am going to try to watch every video you make to see your progress. Stay healthy and have fun and always keep a bright outlook.
I will stay for the journey, it's wonderful to see you making a great life for your family :)
Yep, definitely a journey I do not want to miss. I am so proud of you guys, and all you have done!!!
Hi there, greetings from Rhodes Greece. Looks great and looking forward to seeing all of you till the end of your journey. I'm currently working on a plan to build a house on my grandparents olive grove, I'm very proud of you guys for not giving up on your dreams, all I can do is wish you all the best, love to all of you.
What beautiful hardworking family. You have given your kids the best safe growing environment that will teach them a lot Mother Nature. I wanna say thank you for making such a wonderful decision. 10 years from, you will look back and see what a such decision you made with your husband. To me this is ultimate definition of peace, happiness and freedom from all the noise that comes from staying in urban cities. Thanks for sharing
Love it!
With all the challenges you two still have such a great attitude.
God bless your family and thank you for sharing this amazing journey with all of us!
Love it you guys did brilliantly on doing everything here the commitment is so inspiring and even joyous to watch the faces of the kids seeing the property at the start was so adorable. MASSIVE respect to you guys ♥️💯
I started watching when the move happened. I can’t believe how much has been accomplished. Watching this time lapse really puts it into perspective. Y’all are killing it! Excellent work ethics and a job well done! Congratulations on your progress ❤️
Oh man, this is so exciting to me. We are just in the beginning process of this same adventure. Blessings to your family! I just found you guys and can't wait to see what's in your future.
Love how the kids are involved in the construction, will be great memories for them knowing they helped.
Y'all have given us a real, down to earth video that shows there is still a way to build a real home- way more than showing off your skills and talents like many other videos. I'm about to build a simple home just as you are for myself & my wife of 31 years and your video has given me the inspiration and belief I have been looking for in SO many other youtube videos. My sincerest congratulations to you both. Somehow you have shown everyone more than just a way to put together dirt, materials and hard work... you are also demonstrating family values that everyone seems starved to see again these days. Thank you so much! I wish you the very best and am looking forward to your continuing videos!!
I love when a family pulls together to accomplish something great! May God lead and guide you on your journey.
This video was flat out inspiring. Your commitment and relentless dedication to making your dream come true is a lesson to us all. I wish I was younger and had the wherewithal to do what you have done. Your knowledge and planning was impressive. I especially loved your son helping out and learning. I look forward to watching your next video. God bless and good luck.
Amazing what you have accomplished over the past 12 month and you guys should be very proud of the progress you have made thus far. I found your channel and subscribe around the time of the messed up footing pour and watching how you recovered from the frustration was inspiring. Its been exciting to watch you turn the wilderness into your very own homestead. Thanks for sharing your journey with us !
Absolutely beautiful this needs to be a prime-time movie with y'alls beautiful life and Mel ❤ Gary ! Keep flying high like the bird that watches over y'all up there in that beautiful Mountain. Big Love from Texas
Y'all have been blessed with your forever homestead! Such beautiful property! You are so talented and such hard workers! I'm so glad we get to watch you on your journey! God bless you all! Love from Montverde, Florida!🙏🙌🏻❤🤗
What a journey guys! I've been following you since the renovation on your house in Arizona. You have accomplished so much in a short time. Stay strong and healthy and keep the course. God bless your family!
Watching you folk strikes a primal cord deep inside me….totally satisfying and motivating!
Amazing journey so far. Looking forward to what your cabin looks like finished. Planning a similar adventure for myself and my kids in the future, leaving Arizona to Tennessee though.
BLOOD, SWEAT ANDTEARS. BUT WHEN YOU FINISH , IT WILL BE CHEERS AND BEERS. YOU ALL ARE AN INSPIRATION TO ALL THE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BUILD A BETTER LIFE FOR THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES.
Great to see the recap!! Ya'll have done an incredible job!! I've watched you guys from the beginning and look forward to seeing future videos!
I’m so glad I found this channel…..your year has been soooooo amazing…….and this goes along with what amazing people you are…..I’ve watched your ups and downs….this video only covers a small bit of all you have accomplished ….thank you again for sharing your life……God bless you as you continue to.getting it done.
Yall remind me of me and my family a year ago! Learning to fell trees, clearing woods and trails, building things.....its a magical time, right?!?!
It really is!!! 😎🤗
I just came across your channel and really admire you both for doing such an awesome job building your dream cabin.
It was so nice to see how you kids started this whole journey from packing up and moving, selling your home and moving everything and everyone to this remote location. Thank you
I have just found you - and what a better wy to get to know what you are like than through this recap!! Am sooo looking forward to seeing future vids....... and now will go back and binge on previous ones! ON YOU guys......I also built on new property back in the '80's in Western Australia. Small step by small step!
As a proud father myself looking to make this similar life changing decision I was brought to tears by this video. The fear of the unknown of what lies ahead for us is daunting. Seeing other people that are successful in this is so helpful and just know that your video is helping my family. Seeing you walking the property with the kiddos as they innocently find joy in the simplest of life adventures really hit home as I can picture my little ones doing the same. Thank you
Im planning for a change like this. Its intimidating isn't it. So much unknown. Its going to be an adventure
@@DarrelllCampbelllit is very intimidating. Im planning on moving to an area thousands of miles away from friends and family. Its tough
I've been watching y'all since the Crocker parody. I'm proud of how far you've come and I'm looking forward to seeing your progress in 2022! 🤩
Thank you for showing the challenges and lowlights. I feel like these are the biggest learning experiences to others and helps keep expectations realistic when attempting something like this for others.
Once I started watching, I couldn't stop. Thanks for sharing! Proud of the 3 brave adventurous kiddos!
Not sure how far the creek is from the future house, but you guys could probably use it to your advantage and use the creek for power. Even if it's just for running the lights or something with a little less wattage. My end game is to do something almost exactly like this one day. Good luck guys!
You two have come a long way since Starting the emptying of your house last January! Melanie, you did a phenomenal job putting this video together!! You guys have really worked hard to make it through what All you've done! I am sure that this upcoming year will be so much closer to seeing your beautiful dream of your family home come to fruition!! Looking forward to following along with you and your life's journey filled with adventures and hard work!!! God's Blessings for continued success with your builds
You are a blessed couple. All the best for a long and prosperous life.
My introduction to your journey through time, luckily I see that many other tubers run into the same problems, and you are no exception in this, I like to see that solutions are found and new problems are just around the corner.
I'm very curious about the progress of the adventure you have embarked on, hopefully at a slightly more rewarding pace without the hard school of running up insurmountable mountains. I hope to see many more adventures to come. 🥳
So glad I stumbled upon this video, hope this finds you well, happy, and healthy! God bless!💪🙏
Absolutely fabulous time lapse. All of the ground shots in the drone footage in this give me a new perspective on how big your living area on the 41.36 compound really is. Seeing it all compiled like this really brings to light how much of a service area you really have cleared.
I just love watching Abe work his little heart out helping y'all build. Seeing him pounding those rebar and help roll those logs, just blows my mind. Little man can accomplish a lot. What an amazing view y'all have I can't imagine how breathtaking it must have been during the change of leaves in the fall. I know the camera views that we've had just don't do the real thing any justice.
Thanks for sharing.
Stay happy, healthy, hydrated and safe.
May God continue to bless you, your family and your adventures
Reading this I have made a lot of errors but I have to correct. When I type in small caps it's bad with my eyes, my small screen on my phone and my big fingers... Lol
First time I ever watched one of your videos. I am retired and can only remember having the kind of energy you and your husband have. What an amazing thing to watch your dream take shape. I thought I was just going to watch for a few minutes and get bored and say yeah enough of that, but I was hooked and watched the entire journey over the year. Now I need to backtrack and check out your earlier videos. I decided I should subscribe and I really look forward to watching you finish your home.
After watching all the originals to watch them all together I really see how much work you have done. You two are awesome.
You’ve got a nice family and a nice piece of land. My wife and I had a similar adventure in Florida forty years ago. It’s a grand ride. Best of luck and may God bless you.
Wow what an incredible job of editing Mel! The music sounded good even changing the speed to 2.0. I had to skip ahead though and miss the first pour. That was hard to watch the first time. I know you had to put it in. But you chose the best shots, put aerial views in great spots. At double speed you look like building phenoms! The next bad weather rent that hot tub! You deserve it.
My wife and I had a 2nd house in Arizona and just recently sold because of the market plus we were tired of the west after 13 years of going back and forth. You guys are making my heart smile! Keep up your dream and keep those kids' smiling which will not be hard in the woods! We are now looking to retire in Alabama but after watching your video I may have to rethink Arkansas!!
I have the green tee I want the yellow one to MEL & Gary !!!
WONDERFUL Video!!!
I was there through it all!!WHOOP WHOOP!!!!
Had to watch your 1st year journey over again. I'm amazed at what you have achieved in 1 year! Soon, another year will be passed. The 2nd year video footage (when edited) will be even more amazing! Waiting patiently to see it. Love watching you both getter done.
This is some of the most inspiring content I’ve seen on UA-cam so far. The amount of commitment it takes to do this is extreme. I wish you all the best and keep up the hard work. Prayers all around for good health. Cannot wait to follow along on the journey and watch it all unfold!
They don't pray, notice the "no Like" on your comment. . . it is only for money UA-cam vid.
This is the first video I've seen of you guys doing this, and I've got to say it's pretty awesome what you're doing. I'm really impressed with your block laying job. Now, as for the footer mess up, I don't think you guys messed up. I think that the driver did. The reason I say that he should've seen that u guys weren't 100% ready and told u. Not only that, he could've offered some help. I drive mixer here in Ohio, and I've seen way worse footer forms, and they went way better than yours did. It's not the drivers job to help or offer advice, but I do this way stuff like that doesn't happen. I'm sure you guys had to pay for that second truck that day, and it didn't look like you even poured it. He definitely should've called and canceled it for you, but that's just what I would've done. Hope to see the finished product.
I love this. Seeing the family work together, the husband and wife getting it done together. So refreshing to see. Lucky guy!!!
As a Texan that moved to Arkansas in 2016, welcome to the state! I originally moved to Cabot for work, but I quickly realized it was where I was going to settle down. Met my wife here, bought a 5 acre farm in Austin in 2019 and have never looked back! Good luck in 2022 and Happy New Year!
As Civil Engineer, foundation version 2 looked reasonable in non-earthquake country, except for slab vapor barrier. Others watching should know the plastic sheet was good, but lacked a vapor break of 3”-6” sand layer between native soil and plastic sheet. Should not be surprised if tiles detach and/or carpets mold in this house over next couple of decades.
I would have not used a square to check the foundation... for that we have the Pythagorean theorem
@@LEDniac true.
Yes I noticed that as well and a couple of other issues but I don’t want to spoil it for them. As long as the plans were approved locally and the inspector is happy, then carry on.
My mouth dropped when I saw the transverse bars tied to uprights hammered into the ground. Talk about acceleration of rust, smh.
@@mhgrabow good point !
started feeling sorry for you guys when you had to hire someone to finish the footings off but wow you killed it on the block walls ! good luck to you two its getting interesting ..smiled when i saw even the kids pointing up the blocks
Been doing block work for over 27 years and I can say it's a mighty fine job you guys did
I don't know how I came across this video, but I did and watched it every minute. Mad respect for taking the leap! Yall are my hero's.
Such a refresh to see a proper foundation and actual walls being built in the US 😎
This is much more like the “traditional” wall building I’ve seen in Europe unlike the wooden framed houses.
This should last a few generations ;)
Yeah, I live in Germany and when I see a Californian 500.000$ "cardboard house", I get the spooks.
How can anybody build walls with chipboard? This is the most trashy material I can think of. And if you want this stuff to be resistant to wetness you need to put so much chemical trash inside to seal it - I would be worried about my health constantly.
@@diekritischestimme Do you understand how earthquakes work??? California has some of the most stringent building codes in the world. Concrete cracks, wood flexes and can be rebuilt at less of a cost.

How so?
Your kid swinging a hammer is legendary - the stuff memories are made of...!
I greatly admire what you are doing here.
That was the best safety dance I've ever seen! Just found your channel today and will look at your past posts. Thanks!
Reclaimed what? Nature? You made a big ugly hole in the Forrest just like every human before you well done 👏👏
I love what you are doing! I'm physically disabled from my time in the military and I'd love to do what y'all are doing 😊 God bless y'all abundantly!
Great job you guys Makin your dreams happen and your wonderful family helping the contractors proudly thought wow let's do a good job for these motivated beautiful folks.
This is amazing you two & thank you for sharing this journey! This puts into prospective what we are about to do on our first house in the forest ... I can't wait!
I just watched this video for the second time. I have followed you since AZ. I just love this video. It shows what hard working, intelligent, good people you are. No matter what you are doing it's always good to watch.
I could not stop crying watching how you all got it done, friends, family a wife that ties rebar everything, everyone, just beautiful.
Wowwowow! Congratulations. I’m so inspired by all your hard work, perseverance, your adorable family and supportive friends. Can’t wait to see what you accomplish this year and look forward to seeing you in your completed home!
It’s amazing how much progress you have made since you have moved to the your property! Have a wonderful fantastic Happy New Year!
I subscribed for the first time! Loved every minute of your 2021, bring on 2022!

My heart is so full watching your year! Blessings. -Kirsten
Now that's the way you buy land, and prepared for building your forever homes. God Bless you all
Loved seeing everything again! Congrats on your first year here in Arkansas!
Thank you so much for allowing me to live vicariously through your beautiful, hard-working dream.
WOW!!! What an exciting venture. Beautiful familymand a beautiful piece of land. Best wishes. I can't wait to watch the progress.
So glad I found you, this is going to be great.Thankyou kids.be safe
Saw this video as a suggestion and you just got a new subscriber from Philippines. I am excited to see another couple/family build their dream house little by little with their own hands with so much commitment and hardwork. Stay safe and healthy. 🙂
It was so fun to revisit that! And catch some things I missed. I forgot how wooded the house plots were!
This was one of my biggest pipedreams, to have my family safe and happy and free, to create something like this, together, which would have created an inner strength and bond that would have lasted forever...I miss them very much. I missed my opportunity. I am happy for you and your family, had a smile and a tear as I watched your vid. I hope everything works out well, and I am looking forward to seeing the progress.
Read the title and had to watch because I just purchased 2.3 acres in Oregon wilderness. I'm going for the simple life. As soon as the snow melts I get to cut my new driveway. That will probably take all summer. ....first things first... I'm glad for you guys so I'll be following the whole thing..thanks for posting this.
That was really cool. The recap reminded me of every episode I've watched; thanks for bringing us on your journey🙂❤
