1 YEAR TIMELAPSE - Building Our Cabin Home with No Experience
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 гру 2022
- We’re Sara and Ryan, and in June 2021, we left our home in the suburbs and moved to 5 acres on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state, to build our future family home. We moved our family of 4 into a camper trailer and a 30 ft. yurt, and we started building right away.
We worked almost everyday that summer to so we could be dried in before the rain started in the Fall. We had very little construction experience so we were learning as we were building, but we were determined that if we put in the work we would be successful.
Follow along as we take you through the first summer on our self build as we set our foundation beam, installed our floor joists, subfloor, and began to build our log wall from our log cabin kit home.
Then we were onto much bigger tasks like framing our amazing window wall, raising our roof beam, installing roof rafters, and installing our roof. Watch what we did in the first 3 months of our build in 39 minutes.
********************************************************
And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on UA-cam. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 9 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the summer of 2022. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

I don’t know about everyone else but I’m good with longer videos. I know you do want to hold some content back but you can show most of it to the point where you have maybe 2 weeks or so remaining.
We will probably do another timelapse video that shows us up to present day. This was a video we wanted to put out for a long time. We will be back to our regular videos next week where we will start in on plumbing. Thanks for watching Bobby.
@@OneFootOfftheGrid your welcome. Wish you guys a good week.
Me too
Great job! Beautiful spot for your home. Couldn't help but notice when the foundation was being dug, how rich the ground is and free of rocks! It will make for nice gardens.😊 Well done!👍
There are some rocks unfortunately so we will likely have to bring in some fill dirt. But we are creating a ton of really rich compost soil so we are excited to be able to utilize that in our gardens.
Oh my gosh. What a view from your cabin. I’m from Mississippi and I love rooms with a view. I have just found your channel, and I’ve
started watching you build your cabin.
"To the amazing couple who built their own house, you are living proof that anything is possible when we put our minds and hearts into it. Your sweat, tears, and hard work have paid off beautifully in the form of a dream home that you can truly call your own. What an incredible feat that is! You have shown that determination, skill, and a willingness to learn can overcome even the most daunting challenges. May your home be filled with love, warmth, and endless memories in the years to come. You are an inspiration to all who lay eyes on your masterpiece."😊😊😊😊😊
Just now watching your fast forward build and you are scaring me to death! Glad this is all behind you! Wonderful work!! I know you are so proud!!! 10/23/23

Such a great effort, and I love the care and attention you put into it all. Blessings from Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you so much!
This brings back such good memories. Putting up the logs was probably one of my favorite parts of the build so far.
I (Sara) still think my favorite part of this process has been the rafters!!
You guys sure make it look easy. Thanks for the show. I enjoy it so much.
Glad you enjoy it! It was a lot of work putting it together but really fund to relive all those exciting moments.
Looking at the memories and how /what you guys have accomplished was wonderful i did not get to see the beginning but the timelapse was enjoyable MERY CHRISTMAS
Thank you so much Estella! We always look forward to your comments.
From Colombia, Hi Sara, Ryan and family. People and families like you are what make USA great. I congratulate you for the video but even more because when with your own hands, involving the whole family, you build that dream home, you learn to appreciate the value of things, it strengthens family ties and lasts over time. Congratulations, God bless the whole family and let them enjoy this great achievement.
it’s great to see a couple building their home with so much love and dedication to work, thanks to the video
Aw, thank you so much!

O
loved every bit of the build tbh i am looking into getting my own piece of land and build a house this is inspiring
Incredible! Apart from it being a prefab house it still is a very great achievement! (Even with prefab one has to do a lot cutting and figuring out.)
Very impressed with the strength of the woman in this video! Right in there with the guys! You've invested much more than money in this home. It's obvious that you are committed to a great finish!
She is a pretty badass woman! Couldn't have done any of this without her.
My wife would have put in half a day, and I would have been on my own. Great job y'all !!
I'm pretty lucky to have such an awesome wife who will do crazy things with me.
Awesome Build! Great Design! Love the Log Building Materials!
You were missed terribly last week
Love the video it’s so beautiful
You have accomplished so much
Lots of hugs to you all
Thank you so much!! We hated missing our post last week but we were super excited to share this video with all of you. We will be back to regular videos next week where we will start in on plumbing.
Wow, I’m so totally impressed with how much she is doing. She has some serious strength.😮😊
Awwwww! Thank you. I trained quite a bit in preparation for this.
@@OneFootOfftheGrid you are some kind of awesome! I’m so happy for both of you. I was also so active at your age! 68 now and STILL hauling paint at the store! My father always said, stay active. So true. Bless you both in your endeavors.🙏
Those are some serious building skill right there.. husband and wife givin it all they have. Outstanding work Y’all!!
Beautiful place!!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the recap.
Takes me back a little before I first started watching the channel.
Wishing you the best of success as you continue.
Thanks for watching Jim! We will be back to our regular scheduled content next week where we start in on plumbing.
Good morning guys. Thanks for the refresher. Love it. 🇯🇲🇯🇲👍
Glad you enjoyed it! It was fund going back through all the work that has got us to where we are today.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it Lloyd. And thank you so much for your coninued support of our channel. We had a lot of fun putting all of the footage together. It brought back a lot of memories. Now, let's finish this dang house so we can move in!
@@OneFootOfftheGrid yeah let's do it. 👋👋
Building codes in the U.S. required "hurricane clips" at the bottom of all your roof joists. Especially a good idea where you are located, high in the trees near the lake. Wind gusts at 80 MPH should be considered. Nails don't work the same.
Not sure if you could see in the sped up view, but all of the roof rafters have hurricane clips at the top and bottom of the rafters. Thanks for watching.
This was an unbelievable video! Enjoyed thoroughly and it illustrates that two committed spouses can accomplish anything as long as they work together. You are an inspiration!
Thank you so much Richard! We really appreciate your support.
Bla Bla Bla....! Gibt das Trost ALTER MANN !?🦉🥸 Freundliche Grüße aus Sukosan/HR Konfuzius
Love it, you guys have done an incredible job!
Thank you so much!
Du kannst stolz sein so eine Frau zu haben die auch anpacken kann. Ihr beide habt viel geleistet. Ich wünsche Euch viel Erfolg, macht weiter so. Viele Grüße aus Österreich.

This is so beautiful. ❤
Congratulations on your achievements! Love from Malaysia
Wow! What a wonderful opertunity. Not many people get to have time to do this. Bravo, to you and friends and family. Whoot whoot ;) !
Thank you so much. We feel pretty lucky to be able to do this.
Reminds me of Lincoln Logs as a child! This is awesome! I have a 1/3rd acre lot in Marcus, WA that I plan to build. This video is very motivating!
Thank you so much for watching. Yes, they are a lot like Lincoln Logs! You'll have fun with your house build. For the most part, we have enjoyed ours. It's a crazy and awesome experience.
@One Foot Off the Grid I live in WA state as well. How well insulated is this home to the cold winter's and warm summer's? It doesn't appear to have normal insulation, but I haven't seen the completed home video yet.
Wow, when those walls came up, a log cabin look on the outside and inside just a flat wall. Whoever came up with those prefabricated lumber is genius bec sometimes I find it a bit excessive when entire logs are used. Yes, it's a log cabin, but still. This way though, you get the look, without being excessive and a regular "flat" wall inside and made it easier to build too. 👍👍👍
Absolutely astonished by your accomplishments!!
Thank you so much Andrew! And thank your help on the build. We can't wait for you to visit and see the progress we've made.
Very impressive. You two are doing a great job wow!!!!!😇🎄🎄🎀🎀🎁🎁🎂🎂🎇🎇🎉🎉👏👏💖👍👍💪💪😇😇😇😇😅😅😅😅
Thank you so much 🤗
This is the first video of yours I have seen so far and it was extraordinary. Truly inspirational what you have a accomplished. Incredible amount of work you both did, great to see how much things you did that seemed very daunting - you made them look easy. Amazing. I can only imagine how great you guys must go together. Enjoy it, you truly earned it
Thank you so much for watching Kevin.
Just amazing what you both have done 👍
Thanks for being there along the way and always commenting your support. It means a lot to us!
@@OneFootOfftheGrid, you're very welcome 🤗.
Greetings from Pakistan.
First time I am watching your video, you guys are really amazing.I really appreciate you dedication and skills to accomplish this journey.Stay bless.Keep working and smiling.
Nice house in a beautiful setting! 😊🌲
Thank you so much! It's all starting to come together!
Waooo waooooo waooo admirable su trabajo, y esa dama tiene corazón y fuerza Dios los continúe bendiciendo. Los sigo éxito siempre 🙏🏼🙌🏻💪🏼🇵🇷
The house looks amaying, and this building is hypnotizing, but...
I have a problem with the tickness of the walls. Plus, no roof support beams, so entire roof lays on those thin walls. In 10 years I see this house side-walls bending. Unless you add some tension cables in the middle to compensate that...
you been busy all the hard work can to see more videos I long video the timelaps are fun to watch you get recap on it and to see how far you are now can't wait to see more videos keep smiling
Thank you so much Kimberly!
This video is amazing, Thank You for sharing this amazing experience
Thank you for this Diego. I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent, very nice job
From the south of Iraq and from the land of the civilization of Sumer the most beautiful greetings to you
What a fun thing for your kids and any kids they might have to be able to watch in the future. :)
That is the number one reason we've documented this process. It will be so amazing to go back and watch later.
amazing!! 👏👏
União em família. Algo raro nos dias em que vivemos. Que o novo lar seja repleto de paz e alegria e que Deus os mantenha unidos por esse curto espaço de tempo: a eternidade. 🇧🇷
Very nice! Good architecture! Respect and greetings from Russia!
sarah & ryan you've come long way. when done you'll own your house. good job & happy holidays
Thank you so much. We are getting closer everyday and can' wait till the day that we get to move in .
That was awesome 😎👍
Great to see again all you have done together
Thank you, Sarah! It was fun for us to see it all again, too. I almost can't even believe we did all of that.
wow, those 2 ladys are great workers
Amazing! Happy 2023 to all family! :)
Greetings from the United Kingdom. Most enjoyable to watch your progress on the shell construction. Small query, is any insulation added to the external walls and how do you achieve a decent R factor? What actual time frame did it take until you had the roof covering on and the building watertight. Do you ever get rain where you are building? Keep on with the good work.😇
so cool to see this experience i follow you since the begining , best regards from france.
Awwww! Thank you so much Laurent. We appreciate your support!
Jestem pod wrażeniem 👍
Excelente job, congratulacions!! Kisses forma Cordoba , Argentina
Christmas greetings from Zimbabwe... wow... what an achievement so far.. looking forward to watching your progress xx
Happy holidays! Thanks for watching Cathy.
Love your Finished product. You wouldn’t happen to be willing to share your building and floor plan specs for this?! Wanting to build on my mountain property in Colorado.
WOW at 2:02 is where I came in starting watching you guy's👍
Great job 👍
We are so happy that you've been along for the ride Armida! Thank you so much for your support!
While putting the video together were you thinking of all the things you wish you knew at each of the earlier phases? You have learned so much during this process.
I (Sara) actually wondered how we had so much energy. Lol! And can we get more of that energy to finish the build. I think the main thing is that I would have liked to have known that it was all going to work out. We were racing to complete those roof rafter before our two roofers were showing up to help us and I was so stressed that we couldn't do it, but somehow we did.
It took 1 year to create and share the video, which was a lot of work. Congratulations on building yourself a beautiful house.
All the best
Just amazing!
I LOVE this so much!!!
Thanks for all the support and helping with those BIG and HEAVY Rafters.
Ok Pak tetap semangat saya senang menonton nya sampai habis videonya walaupun rumahnya belum 100 % selesai👍👍🙏
Потрясающе, классная работа ребята а главное вместе
Вы молодцы, успехов вам. 👏👏👏🤞🤞🤞
Hi, great seeing the whole family getting involved with the house build, can I ask, how much was the kit for the build including all materials? Thank you in advance, great project and thanks for sharing.
Parabéns que linda casa parabéns show
Hey good afternoon you guys how are you guys doing today hey thanks for getting better out there it's getting the done they should be at least pick up some all that stuff on the side of the house so that way you won't keep stepping on it please pick it up and put on a pile at least so that way nobody gets hurt all right you guys have a great day and God bless you guys
Thank you so much for watching. We do small clean ups on the build each day, and big clean ups about once a month. The more we build the smaller the material piles get, but the scrap piles are always a battle. And everyone is always concerned about the rocks, and we actually pick those up, too, but then through our walking more erode. We are excited for the day when we are done building and can have fill dirt brought in to really clean it up.
Another great episode, we wait all week for the next one
Thank you so much for your input on this one as we were editing! Now, onto some episodes about plumbing!!
🦋Beautiful house I just started watching ya'll the family on UA-cam I really enjoy 🐦
Thank you so much for watching
Still doing a great job guys.
Thank you so much Shaun!
I was glad to see, when you needed help, you got help, and with a job that you were uncomfotable with you had helpers.
It's amazing, only not sure if it's warm in winter
You just watched the shell of the house go up. It has a LOT of insulation that will be added.
It looks amazing, and I know your window wall will help you soak in that view! If I may ask, what will you guys do for power out there? Stay safe!
Thank you so much, and we really do love the window wall. We are actually connected to the grid for power, but plan to do a grid tie system in the future. That way we can run on solar, but when we are running low in that area, we can get our power from the grid.
Hoping I get to do this with someone someday 😍
Подвал всегда делаете в полный рост- иначе это мучение бцдет при пользовании - для хранения🔥 а дом красавец . Всем добра 👏👏🇷🇺❤️🇷🇺
Not quite ALONE, but an awesome house, good work
Glad you enjoyed it
Sehr schönes Video Grüße aus Germany
