The amount of acrylic fine art advice out there is sparse to say the least, so when a wizard like you help us out, it's a godsend. Thank you Greg. Keep doing your magic!
I got some cheap begginer acrylic paints but i suck at them and they really do dry fast before i can blend them the way i want, hope this vid helps a bit
@@Silver-nn5ey My best advice for least money. A bottle of diluted glazing medium or airbrush extender/medium will help you blend colors easier and longer. Using a spray bottle sparingly, you can keep the paint wet on the canvas and on the palette.
I’m sure I speak for many people when I say that I’m profoundly grateful for you taking the time to share your knowledge and skills with us. I hope to see more videos like this from you in the future. Everything you do you do incredibly well, but I’d be particularly interested in hearing your approach to painting textures and highlight/shading from imagination. Thank you for this video 🙏
I used to paint with oils years ago and wanted to get back in but with acrylics because they're less toxic. I was getting frustrated because of the drying time. This video was super helpful. I happen to have both mediums on hand in Golden brand. I had no idea I could use them together! Now I'm going to give acrylic painting another try! Thank you!

I've been painting for a couple of years now and l got plenty of inspiration from just watching your videos but never expecte you sharing your secrets behind the master pieces, l really appreciate this knowledge, 1000 thanks Grandmaster!!! Blessings to you and all your family, you are a true one
Invaluable information Krayola. Sanding the gesso surface is a big deal too as a final varnish will look sandy otherwise. Just got back to acrylics after decades of oils, so this tutorial and materials list is gold. Test canvas is life.
Thank Sir! I'm going to give this a try. One of my great frustrations with acrylics is the quick dry time and the lack of blending I'm able to do in some instances. Thanks for the tip.
I started out painting in oil paints because of how fast acrylics hardened on my pallete and canvas. I would get so frustrated and use so much water that the pigments would change and get diluted so quick! Thank you for showing this to us. Love your products on trekell -much love !

I’ve spent too long trying to find the best acrylic paint for my use and style and I had never heard of Nova until I came across your videos. Your style and techniques have helped me better myself with acrylic (used to be an oil paint guy but dry time and quick dry mediums were all too much). Big thanks for the advice you’ve given. You are my favorite acrylic painter by far, I can't believe this is acrylic. I've been a professional tattooer for over 20 years, I also have a custom guitar shop and sculpt monsters but I've never painted with acrylic or oil, for some reason it just never inspired me until I found your UA-cam channel. After I finish a few sculpting and guitar projects I'm currently working on I'm going to try my hand at acrylic. Thank you for the inspiration, you are freaking amazing.
I started acrylics in the 70's, & they were opaque. One coat done! Liquitex. Then they got transparent. I'm not doing twice the work, done with acrylic. Enamals cover great, but the fumes i can't take anymore, especially if I use airbrush. So now I'm doing oil. Sit & wait to dry. Add dryer & hope glazing doesn't bead up. If a really good quality opaque acrylic is out there, I just may go back to it. I like the speed.
wow this is God sent. I purchased oil paints due to the my lack of knowledge in finding a slow drying method for acrylic paints. Thank you so much for this video. Also, your work is so inspiring thank you for sharing.
You are so talented and it's very gracious for you to share your tips and instruction. I started painting a few years ago after an injury and still don't have confidence in my work, one day! I use 50cent bottles from Walmart because it's what I can afford and make my own gesso, I cherish the few brushes I have and have always wanted to paint something big! I get small canvass as gifts from friends for painting but never even as big as in the video. I am going to just keep watching your videos and be grateful for your tips and guidance. Blessings to you
Been watching you for years and you’re the reason I got back into acrylic painting. Thank you for making this video because I’ve been trying to figure out where I’ve been going wrong.
This is awesome......Thanks I did some paintings in oil (my very first oil painting was a commission of a 2 person potrait in color, sold for a small amount of $250) and found that the smell was to much for me. I've since been sticking with acrylics now. I love this new knowledge about the slowing down the drying time, this is great news. I've been kinda stuck for a few years and working on pulling my ass out of the slumps, dust myself off and get painting again. Been in like a blocked mind just trying to get started again. Watching great painters like you helps a lot.

I was never into painting or drawing. I didn't have the ability I could barely draw stick figures that look like stick figures. Then about a year ago or so I just happened to see one of your videos and I decided to start drawing. And now that's opened my eyes to a new hobby I love. Thank you for giving me that motivation to do something new.

you're sooo humble. i'm more amazed by your humility AND i'm also blown away by your talent..but that's how amazing your humility is to me. you inspire me to be a better person as well as artist.
This is exactly what I needed to improve of my paintings, where myself before I use tons of water spray and paint, layer by layer of blending affect.thankyou for the informative techniques on how to blend a background.
I used acrylic when I started out painting about 17 years ago but it dried way to quickly for me. If I knew about the slow dry it would of helped me alot. Where I got my materials from didn't have any mediums for acrylic and I didn't have the internet for advice, and just had very little experience in general. I found oil paint is perfect for me and never looked back since. If I want I can use acrylic for the under painting because it dries conveniently fast then paint with oil on top. Awesome work by the way, got to respect anyone who can make their passion their business.
Thank you SO SO much for posting... just at the right time. I have just started acrylics and was watching oil painting videos trying to replicate their technique and I was frantic to find a way to slow drying time. I found so many of the mediums make paint too transparent.. How brilliant adding retardant.
Right on! Thank you very much, it is so intriguing to see your process...I have never been a fan of "How-To"...or "the easy way to" but just being able to look over your shoulder is priceless. Paintings are not manufactured but develop through a process, and it is a privilege to watch yours!
Well I have watched 5 of your videos so far today, and I have to say you are now my favorite artist. Your work has inspired me. I have only done a few acrylic paintings and a whole bunch of everything else. Tattoos, signs, oils, airbrush, and several other mediums. It's your content that's going to make me go out and buy the materials I need to start my journey, so thank-you.
Thank you so much for the information! I just started my first acrylic painting an hour or so ago and it worked nicely, but the paint was drying as I was painting and I was having to mix my colors more often than I would have liked.
Thanks for sharing. I currently paint with oils but they take time to dry. Wanted to switch to acrylics but couldn't manage the fact that they dry to fast. So, I am trying your technique soon but with some local products and see what happens.
I love what you do man. I always watch your videos and it blows my mind what you accomplish with acrylics. I mainly paint in oils and acrylics always give me such a hard time. I'm definitely going to give this a try.
Thank you for this! I've always wanted to get into acrylic painting but have been frustrated by the fast drying time. You are such an awe-inspiring artist, I absolutely love your artwork. I can't wait to see more!
Thank you for posting this! I just started painting with acrylic and it dries so fast I couldn't get a smooth blend. I have been watching your videos for a long time and it's awesome to have you share your secrets with us. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Hopefully I can get the same type of effect.
Thanks alot for sharing this blending technique! Acrylics dry way too quick and this is really helpful. Love your work! I got your books, keep up the great work. Fan from Australia.
I’m also grateful for you taking the time to share your knowledge and skills with us. I hope to see more videos like this from you in the future. Everything you do you do incredibly well, but I’d be particularly interested in hearing your approach to painting textures and highlight/shading for sure. Thanks again.
Thank you!!! This will be VERY HELPFUL for me. I’ve always loved your work, have one of your books that I get lost in all the time - but couldn’t wrap my head around how you’re able to make acrylic paint do the things that you do. Thank you so much for posting this.
You are my biggest inspiration!!! Your style!! And tecnique !! You have got me to start art again witch has always been my thing!! And seance having kids ive lost the will to create!! I cant thank you enough for inspiring me the way you have!! I hope one day I can be as good as you and you bet ill be practicing!! A lot!
Hey, Greg, thanks for the insightful demo! I'm thinking about getting your brush set and getting into acrylics again. I've been an oil painter for a while, but I like that you can work faster with acrylics. I'd love to see another demonstration about your brushes, i.e. what each one does. Thank you!
Makes good sense. I've only used "flow aid" to slow the acrylic paints drying time. I do wall murals so blending time matters a lot! Your art sings! I love your unique characters and your execution is spot on. I will definitely check out your website. Thank you!!
Thank You so much to share your knowledge and skills for FREE. This video helps me to be better, and i'm sure it helps others as well. Keep painting Greg, can't wait the next one!
Thank you for the knowledge. I always had to speed up my strokes when applying my layers. This will help my next project greatly. This is my first comment, but have been subscribed to you for many moons. So I will compliment you and your imagination and originality... extremely impressive.
Thank you so much for the tips and tricks! I enjoy watching you paint so very much! It would be fun to watch a video on real time...well maybe not COMPLETELY real time but with a lot of slowed down bits to show precision and techniques used. Maybe with voice over talking through your process. Keep it! Love all the work!
This is great! Love your work but always thought you used oils. So glad to know you use acrylics too. I've been using golden OPEN acrylics lately but this is helpful.
I've had a little free recently time to watch a lot of art videos out there. This was very informative and your work is incredible. Thanks so much for sharing .I hope to explore the possibility of playing with acrylics again and trying out the slow drying blending. Sometimes the right materials make all the difference.
I differ if you are a great teacher I admire you a lot I love your work I have learned a lot by observing you thank you for sharing your art congratulations artist
The way you do your clouds, it reminds me of some of the work done for Over the Garden Wall, with similar colors and a somewhat similar atmosphere to them. if you haven't seen it yet, I would totally recommend it! Its the perfect time of year to watch the short series, and I feel like you'd appreciate the style and themes of it!
Your talent is amazing and thank you for sharing your technique I would LOVE to see more videos on your process, maybe composition, creative process, glazing over your underpainting, I could go on and on, legit tape a masterclass, id’e buy it ❤️
I'm here in the UK and it's hard to find a tutor/mentor that can help refine my style, your videos are the reference I look at when it comes to cloud like backgrounds but also the effect of... feathers or whale skin. amazing! Amazing stuff I look forward to more videos and possibly if your ever in the UK, specially at the moniker art fair or urbanartair.
Thank you for the tutorial. I watch all your videos. I would love regular tutorials or just regular speed vids. Even if just a portion of a painting. Keep em coming
Yes! Very helpful, I remember you gave me this tip back in l.a.a couple months ago..makes much more sense watching you work with it.. look forward to more tutorials like this.
I been following your career since the late 90's early 00's when you where doing tattoo flash and, I got a pamphlet ( with a graff rabbit and spray can bnw ) delivered to my shop, I have a couple of your sketch books and, an amazing print ( the wolf in sheep's clothing one ). Back than I was still using Prisma on Bristol but, soon switched to spit shading flash, this year how ever I took the plunge and made my first order with Nova color and, as a beginner when it comes to acrylic I can not thank you enough for this video, please more like this.. Anything that shows more of your techniques ( so I can bite them of course ) . You have been my favorite artist for 20 plus years now and, even my web site name ( im so awkward ) was inspired by your web site Im scared. If it wasn't for you / Sam Keith there would be no me... Thanx for all you do my dude... I have had to retire early from tattooing do to arthritis and, carpel tunnel so, if I cant make this transition it's back to being a laborer for me, so every bit helps... I really appreciate you for this one...
Being an artist myself, I think it's the artists duty to teach what we know to the young budding artist so they can blossom into another great artist or even better than us late on in life... I truly love all your paintings, which they are jampacked with so much realism mixed with fantasy and vibrant colors that catch your eye all over the painting... I'm more of a chalk pastel kind of guy, but I have played with acrylic paint on canvas a few times, and thank you for the tips in blending colors...
Each artist must develop his own proprietary techniques and take them with him to his grave. Divulging the secrets, as Greg Simkins, esq. has done here, is a serious breech of artistic ethics.
This was unexpected & a interesting technique. I'll have to give this a try in the future. Thanks to those asking questions and to Simkins for answering.
I want to thank you! And I have a little surprise for you soon! So cool to hear you talk about the slow dry medium stuff. I want more. definetly. And "the people who have more knowledge" - I know them aswell, they exist, but they don´t paint. All good Artists I met, found their own ways to paint, created own techniques, or mixtures... big up!
Thank you for sharing I've notice when I paint with acrylic love the idea of thinning it out and spreading it for more control but wanted to see if I can do more with it as I love the idea of blending but hate working with oil
I’ve watched all your time lapse and last just before falling to dream I wished you’d make a video jut like this... this was waiting for me when I woke up🤣thank you immensely Mr Greg🙏
I'm love this video because I a huge fan of your work and I'm a starting to paint with acrylics is so cool of You charring your knowledge and tips with us, keep doing it maybe in the future a small painting tutorial pleaseeee!!!😍
That moment when you realize that a master artist just divulged a coveted secret on making a DIY ACRYLIC version of Bob Ross’s “liquid clear” 🤯 I am shooketh... also I can’t recommend Greg’s brush set enough I got my first set years ago and they have held up phenomenally and I’m pretty rough with em, still holding strong. THANK YOU SO MUCH GREG!!!
Edna Wargon Art he did use oils absolutely! They don’t dry so he was able to make beautiful color transitions and blend everything so soft and NOW I realize here is a way to make acrylics act in a similar way! Lol that’s why I said he made a DIY acrylic version of bob Ross’s liquid clear, cuz liquid clear is an oil medium 🤗
Why, Mr. Simkins...you are a force of nature! Haha. How are you? I teach junior high art in a district just south of Houston, Texas, to students who typically have very little by way of means or support at home. I just found you on UA-cam and was so impressed that, during this season of quarantine-induced remote learning, I sent them all a link to one of your time-lapse videos. They freaked out! Haha. I told them you were just a couple years younger than me, but way better. 😁 They were throwing all sorts of questions my way about you and how you make your paintings and how you come up with ideas, etc., and I didn’t know the answers. I told them I would reach out to you to find out. Do you ever visit art students in public schools? I don’t have much of a budget, but I could figure something out if you would be willing to come see us! Please let me know how you feel about something like this. You now have a very young and quickly growing fan base here in the Lone Star State! 😊 Thanks for making the world a more interesting place, and for inspiring me and my students. ♥️
Hi Jody, thank you for the kind and thoughtful comment. I think it is awesome that you are sharing my videos with your class. I have spoken at Universities and Museums and seminars around the country in the past and also share at my kids careers days every year for the past 7 years. These days my work and family time have taken front seat and I try to stay in the studio painting more than anything. The little I can do is edit a videos here and there when time permits, but I am generally just trying to keep up on deadlines. I appreciate the invitation and wish you and your students all the best. I will be posting a new video in the next couple days and am going to try to answer peoples questions, so if they have any specific ones that stand out, go ahead and leave them in the comments and I'll try to address them. Thank you:)
Greg "Craola" Simkins I can totally understand about family first! I was a SCAD grad and had a career as a designer and illustrator before becoming an art teacher. My husband and I have seven children in our blended family, and a “live at work” mentality just wasn’t giving me enough time with those who needed me most. While teaching also requires a lot of balance, I am right where I belong now. 😊 I’ll start collecting questions from my students today so we can participate in your next video, and if you’re ever up for either joining our class via live video chat, or even creating a video especially for young students who want to learn more about what you do, please let me know. We love you here in Pearland, Texas! Take good care and best wishes!
Thank you so much for this Greg! I have only just recently got back into painting and bought a slow drying medium to try out. So this video was just what I needed to inspire me to try it out.

It's your content that's going to make me go out and buy the materials I need to start my journey, so thank-you.
Wonderful advice,thanks! Godly paintings!
Would love to see some real time paintings from you even it was a four part series...thank you so much for sharing your talent!
That's what I also said!! 🥺❤❤❤
Thank you for showing this, I needed the help.
Your imagination is WILD. love your work!
Thank you for the slowed down tutorial. I struggle with clouds and this helps a ton
Thank you!
Check out this video, it might be helpful:) thanks for the feedback:) ua-cam.com/video/52HogKTmXJo/v-deo.html
This is so helpful. I’m an oil painter, and I’m prepping for a mural using nova paint. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Love your art.
Makes good sense. I've only used "flow aid" to slow the acrylic paints drying time. I do wall murals so blending time matters a lot! Your art sings! I love your unique characters and your execution is spot on. I will definitely check out your website. Thank you!!
Love the Bob Ross reference :D
Thank You so much to share your knowledge and skills for FREE. This video helps me to be better, and i'm sure it helps others as well. Keep painting Greg, can't wait the next one!
All and any info is so appreciated. You are the magic man.
I've never tried that slowing down the drying time, gonna give it a try.
Thank you for the knowledge. I always had to speed up my strokes when applying my layers. This will help my next project greatly. This is my first comment, but have been subscribed to you for many moons. So I will compliment you and your imagination and originality... extremely impressive.
Yes! Please!🙏more of this kind of video's!
Thank you for this! You’re the best! ✨🌈👏🏼
🙏🙏🙏 thanks for the comment. I appreciate it!
All good Artists I met, found their own ways to paint, created own techniques, or mixtures... big up!
Thank you sir! and thank you for sharing you're techniques! They are super helpful as well! keep killing it!
Greg "Craola" Simkins 🥳 gracias
You are amazing man def my favourite artist at the moment! keep it up!
Thank you so much for sharing your process with us. It is a real pleasure and an inspiration.
Best teachers just share, they dont believe they are good teacher but they beliebe content share v
Can inspire
Thank you so much Greg for sharing your art and knowledge with us!
Awesome. Would love to see a video on you painting feathers (or any other detail work).
Thank you for sharing this. I am new to painting and was using acriylics but wanted to slow down drying time. This is going to help me alot.
This was very helpful! I love using Matte Medium, but I never thought of mixing it with something else. I'll definitely try it out! Thanks!
I'm love this video because I a huge fan of your work and I'm a starting to paint with acrylics is so cool of
You charring your knowledge and tips with us, keep doing it maybe in the future a small painting tutorial pleaseeee!!!😍
Ummm, i thought bob ross used oils not acrylics, they take forever to dry!
@@newplaylist4 got ya, also there exists a thickner medium too, add this to his mix and you really have Bob Ross oils 😊
Edna Wargon Art oh right on, I’m still exploring all the different media and things so I will definitely have to check that out!
You are an amazing teacher!
I just love your painting where you get your ideas to paint magnificent pictures
Thank you for sharing your many talents and knowledge
