    I absolutely agree about tracing. I can absolutely freehand the basic proportions, but when I'm already going to take weeks, sometimes months, to paint a piece, spending the least amount of time on the basics just makes more sense to me.

    Something that may help you take your fur to the next level is that fur always grows in a certain direction depending on where it is on the animals body, Thus when you were putting in your dark hair you went in every direction rather than putting your hairs down following a direction. So on the animals back the fur will always grow towards the back as a general rule. On the sides of the animal as you progress from the back to the belly the hair grows gradually towards the back to the belly.

    This is actually a very smart way to learn how to paint fur and hair. Most people learn as they paint other parts of body. They are fighting proportions, shapes, value, ect, while trying to learn something new. It just becomes frustrating. While you went about it in an actually more intelligent way. You isolated the problem and worked on that specific part finding solutions that can be carried over to other paintings.

    As I’m watching this, I’m remembering your video about not drawing with charcoal that I watched yesterday…. Watching this, I realize you are working with these paints exactly the same as you did with the charcoal (with the blending, erasers, & sponges! ). It makes perfect sense now!

    Always great videos Daniel. Just finished a massive lion painting and I'm "satisfied " with it but my fur details need some fine tuning. I called it good enough and it's now hanging on my livingroom wall. Now I can watch your tutorials and stare at my painting to see where I went wrong (or at least not quite right) haha

    I haven't gone through all of your videos yet.
    Can you do something with short hair, like a deer?... especially on the face area where the fur looks stippled? I'm just starting but have been tasked with painting some deer and can't figure out how to do that look without it looking too busy and weird.

    Enlightening!
    Does this use paints that have retarder mixed in, as per your latest video - or just the water?
    .
    Which could lead to a question on when during the process you'd use said retarder.
    😊

    • @StudioWildlife
      @StudioWildlife  Рік тому +1

      These were the same paints that I used for the latest video I filmed them both at the same time. The retarder was added at the start of the process as I was mixing up the paints. the good thing about it is I can add water in exactly the same way as I would without the retarder and it works in the same way

    • @geoffc1862
      @geoffc1862 Рік тому

      @@StudioWildlife Brilliant.
      Thanks -
      Surprised, in some ways, manufacturers don't make a set of acrylics that have retarder already included.
