My daughter was taken aback when she saw a very large bottle of feminine lubricant in my studio.
She thought her elderly widowed mother had suddenly developed a love life!
As always, your videos are the best!
hahaha
lol
Which one?
🤣🤣🤣
😂 legend!
very informative, Clive. Most UA-cam painters of acrylics barely understand them, and few understand the use of flow improvers and retarders. I'm happy you are able to tell us all exactly what they are and how to both make our own and use them💓💓💓
I don’t know what I’d do without you Clyde! This really helps Me save money!
Your wet palette tip changed everything for me...and now this! I have a 3ltr container of this stuff in the kitchen as a backup for making vape juice. If this works (which I'm sure it will) you've changed the game again. Thank you sir.
Did it work?
This man has been immensely helpful, seemingly every time I have a question. Clive is my go to. Keep it up!
I find how you say water satisfying. Glad it was said so many times lol
How very generous of you Clive, thank you for the information.
Fantastic tip, Clive. Thanks for helping us save money.
Sir you are the Bib Ross of this generation and by hat's off to you 🎉
Thanks for the refresher Clive 😊
My jaw drop all the way down to my feet , thank you!!! This is really informative for me (young dumb and broke art student)
Clive thank you so much for what you do ❤️
Thank you so much Clive for providing so much useful information. You are such a credit to the acrylic art world, all the tips are fantastic 👏 💯👌 🙏
Stumbled on your channel the past week or so and it is really inspiring me to start painting a bit again! Awesome video along with the many others I've watched of yours. Thanks for the inspiration and invaluable knowledge Clive
Watch Clive's series on Colour Theory. It is one of the best I have seen, and it has immensely improved my painting.
As have all his videos. Kudos Clive.
Very helpful Clive. Nice to learn new stuff.

GREAT TIP DEAR FRIEND 👍💞💞💞
Thanks Cliver,such useful informations.
Thank you for your valuable information 🙏
Vegetable glycerin is also the main ingredient in electronic cigarette liquid, so maybe if it's a real painting emergency consider using your vape e-liquids.
Thanks Cliver,such useful info.
Superb tips Clive, very money conscious amateur mate,❤😊
You make it so easy to understand your teaching tips in your videos so thank you 😊Lynne from Cardiff

Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for helping me save money with your hacks
Sweet thanks!
thank you !
I learned about using Propylene glycol a while back, but never thought about polyurethane glycol. It makes more sense, being acrylic paint and all. VG is super cheap, definitely going to look into that.
I wanna try the vg as well.
VD is free but stay away from that 😎
@scottpitner4298 I ended up trying the VG, and I didn't care for the way it worked. PG did alright, but it's just more hassle. I just paint more watercolors first and then acrylic is like easy mode.
Thanks Clive, good video. Polyethylene Glycol is actually a whole family of chemicals (technically they differ on how many ethylene monomers they contain). Examples are PEG 300, PEG 400, etc... Which one are you using? Thanks!
PEG is in vaxs and many incl myself are allergic to it
I don’t know if you ever received an answer? But you should note Clive is not using polyethylene glycol but rather polyeurethane glycol - I can find heaps of suppliers for the former but none for the latter. Polyethylene glycol is used in medical and pharmaceutical and is crazy expensive.
@@PaulMacklinAmazing Hi Paul, thanks. (I haven't rewatched the video yet).
👍👍👍👍👍👍
very interesting information, thank you! What I don't really undertand is gel retarders - I've know gel mediums that have retarders in, but these are used for increasing the body/impasto effect; wouldn't a "gel retarder" that is based on silica once dry loose its volume?
The intro song is great and funny 😀
I like the gel kind for getting a greasy streak effect, I needed to imitate the painting “dove” by picasso for an assignment.
Should read SILICA GEL, of course !
Great tips on retarders. Very useful info. Thanks a heap😀
Hello, I'm trying to learn how to screen print onto paper bags with acrylic paint. I need to mix a gel with the paint, can I just use hair gel with glycerine and propylene glycol?
Brilliant! I wonder if you can tell me if retarders behave nicely if you want to resin your painting? Do the additives mess up the painting finish with resin or varnish? Blessings Clive! You’re a font of knowledge! xx
As far as I know it doesn’t effect the outcome. I use it all the time.
Any advice on where to buy polyurethane glycol?
Well i was going to make some but found buying it here local was less costly
Is it polyurethane or propylene glycol?
O Wise One - would adding Veg Glycerin to slice gel work ?
Is polyurethane glycol the same as liquid paraffin?
Great tips 👍
I Have A Question! Does the same rule apply with the retarder? Thin acrylic only 40% like with water? Or what would be the best with a retarder?
I bought some metallic silver paint - 2 bottles and one of them has broken down and become super watery. Can I use silica powder to thicken it back up?
Hmmm... After searching for polyurethane glycol, I'm a bit confused. Did you perhaps mean polyethylene or propylene glycol? Or might the substance you're talking about be called something else in the US? Of course it's completely possible that I've missed something an am a complete idiot, in which case I apologize in advance. lol Thanks!
Polyethylene glycol
Wikipedia
Sorry to necro, is it not actually propylene glycol?
@@CLIVE5ART But we heard you saying polyurethane glycol in the video!
I use glycerine but till the painting dries the colors gets mixed up and looses it's vibrance.
Did you add it directly to paint or did u use water ?
@@rmerossi7397 i use pure vegetable glycerine. With a brush, i coat it on the paper and also mix with paints. The paints flows smoothly on paper thereafter and also doesn't dries early. But when it does dries, the colors looses it's vibrance somehow.
@@nxncy ah ok thank you🥰 .I will try and see
What materials is to make the paint shining?
Where the heck do you acquire polyeurethane glycol?
It's polyethylene glycol, not polyurethane glycol :)
I use aloevera gel mixed with glycerine and PVA glue 😅
Acrylic retarer sounds like what I am, when I try to use acrylics :D
Can you make a bottle of retarder using glycerine and water (same as buying a bottle of retarder). If so, what is the ratio of glycerin to water?
You said Polyurethane glycol, did you mean polyethylene glycol (PEG)?

*Clive, I can't seem to get your website to load - is there a problem?*
It’s closed down sorry 😢
I was told Floor care by Pledge Water base to use to retard the acrylic paint from drying out. I was not too fond of that. Another person use SAM's Oder thinner by Windsor Newton, and it keeps all his colors he pre mixed stay dry for a few weeks. Just uses a thin plastic cover over the paint, because he does not always have time to finish his larger paintings, and doesn't want to waste paint, and have to remix the colors he liked. Some, mix their colors they like up, and then use the small plastic travel bottles to put their pre mixed colors in. I just was wondering if using the Pledge floor care is ok to use as a retarder with acrylics?
Can’t answer as I have never used it if it’s oil based it’s a definite no no
When I was at art school one of the tutors told me to use a bit of washing up liquid. I tried it and it sort of works but nowhere's near as good something like W&N slow drying medium which is a gel retarder.
Washing up liquid is a degreasing agent and will cause the acrylic resin in the paint to be unstable it will flake or peel over time don’t use it in acrylic paint
@@CLIVE5ART Thanks for that advice and it's a good thing I never used it on any serious work.
Love the videos as I've found artists are frequently conned by art shops. For example masking fluid is just Latex, you can buy that by the bucket, they charge a fortune for Walnut Oil claiming it needs be refined, it doesn't, I've got paintings 20 years old done with store bought stuff and they've not cracked or yellowed.. And one of the worse is artists masking tape that they claim is low tack so not to damage the paper. Use any masking tape, you just need need to run it down the edge of the table to make it less sticky, works every time.
Hmm now I'm wondering if I can just use the vape juice base liquid, that I already have, instead of ordering a retarder - since it's made of Vegetable Glycerin and Propylene Glycol.. Will research further =)
edit: ah, you mentioned the vaping part in another video... great tip!
Who would have known, that a bad habit could leave to such an unexpected money saving situation.
Yes you can! It's the same stuff just think what people are breathing in to their lungs its also use in paint the paint making process
@@CLIVE5ART It's also in asthma medicine inhalators tho ;)
@@TheMackhimself big pharma doesn't care if you live or die they just want you to buy
i have some retarder i bought a while ago and wondering if i can use it with gouache. is it different than "blending medium" you can buy? thanks
at 6:25 you said "polyurethane glycol" IT DONT EXIST! can you be more specific? what does exist is (polyethylene glycol). their is something called (polyurethane glycolysis) which is many products. i cannot find "polyurethane" i can find polyethylene glycol. what is the difference between polyethylene glycol and polyurethane. sorry for the confusion. do you have a brand name for polyurethane glycol?
It's polyethylene glycol.
