Morning thy fellow 8BitStereo listeners! You're gifted a nice early upload with the brilliant and underappreciated soundtrack of Faxanadu, from the one and only Jun Chikuma! Even with being her 4th NES soundtrack she did while still early in the NES/Famicom lifetime when joining Hudson Soft, her style was already starting to shine and she is overall still an overlooked female composer, and even with her short list of 5 NES soundtracks she composed, this is arguably her best and most diverse work with the console. She really sells the Adventure & RPG vibe and matching the mood of this world we are brought into, so many adventurous and fun feeling tracks with the "Opening", "Eolis", and the "Overworld" themes. Overall great tracks like "The Guru's Mantra" and "Shopkeeper" themes, but masterfully also incorporates more dark and mysterious tracks, most prevalent on "World of Mist", it really makes you feel like you're in another dimension, something Chikuma always incorporates in the work she does, and she is just fantastic at what she does on this soundtrack, and thanks to efforts of Toshiaki Takimoto Arranging her work (and responsible overall for the Sound Programming on this title) under Fumihiko Itagaki's sound driver for Hudson Soft, it captures one of the best RPG soundtracks for the console. For awhile, especially in the states, most people didn't know this was a spin off title of Xanadu, or the second installment in the Nihon Falcom's Dragon Slayer series, and is unique enough to stand on its own as a fun action adventure RPG, this is certainly one of the most non-Hudson Soft looking games, but they succeed in what mattered most, creating a vision of this world with cool looking environments and enemies. Gameplay is as straight forward and fun to learn as it gets, Hudson did a really good job on this title and Jun Chikuma's score ties it all together so well! Thanks for always listening and enjoying, and even give June Chikuma support and love as she still is releases material and albums and is even around on twitter at least, its nice to see composers like her still around and releasing work (twitter.com/junechikuma). And if you'd like you can give support on Patreon and be featured in the end portion of videos as thanks for your support, thanks! www.patreon.com/nikotengoku / ko-fi.com/nikotengoku
I remember this as a kinda unique game with a frustrating inventory system and a banger OST. Not my favorite, but definitely iconic. Thanks for all you do, Niko :)
Wouldn't be a Hudson Soft game without some kind of frustrating aspect to it, but at least its not tired purely to its difficulty. But you're most welcome! :D
Most likely tied to when Nintendo got it "Under Licensed from Falcom" to release it outside Japan, as the PAL version of the title screen has it at 1988 as well even though it took until 1990 for it to release in PAL regions.

I appreciate this soundtrack enough to have downloaded it on my phone. I do listen to this in my car.
What a restless guy!
❤
DON'T HAVE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS
REMEMBER YOUR MANTRA
This is not enough golds.
EXCELLENT JOB! ❤ This is by far one of my favorite NES games.
It's certainly become more of a favorite for many over the years, and deserved, Hudson Soft really cooked good on this title!
I love this game so much, the overworld theme comes frequently to my mind.
Always loved how the key salesman (or woman) was smoking a cigarette. I imagine the clerk’s scruffy smoker’s voice saying “that’ll be 150 golds.”
*hack* "That'll be 150 golds." *spits in spitoon* "Thank ya, have a nice day, watch out fer them dwarves."
Definitely the game's sexiest character. What a rebel!

One of my favorites growing up. Thanks!

Amazing Game, One of my favorite
Aww yeah, time for some ska at 8:14
Hahahahahahahahahahahha I laughed way too hard at this
Oof, now there's some nostalgia. I still have a cart of this game somewhere. Amazing game and OST.
One of my favorite action adventure games.
😭🙏🏽❤
Whaaaa? I’ve been playing this for the last week. J keys, red potions, etc…all in a very limited inventory
If the game debuted in Japan in 1987 and didn't hit our shores until 1989, then why does the title screen say 1988?
Most likely tied to when Nintendo got it "Under Licensed from Falcom" to release it outside Japan, as the PAL version of the title screen has it at 1988 as well even though it took until 1990 for it to release in PAL regions.
NELLO, I SELL TOOLS. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE?
Classic! Except that dang Battle Helmet (does nothing, but looks cool) and that silly Pendant which actually lowers your AP. 😂
