    Remember spending years thinking "Wow, 2015 is so far away I can't even imagine it"... and now it's 7 years ago. Crazy how fast it flew by.

    I've never agreed with the criticisms of this film. The time travel elements are not overly complex, well explained and make sense. I had no problems understanding the plot on my first viewing at my local Cannon cinema, unlike many stories featuring time travel paradoxes which can be absurdly confusing and completely illogical.
    It is also when of the few films I know in which the future is not portrayed as either the aftermath of a global ecological disaster or living under a totalitarian government.
    All in all, Part II is a fine middle segment of the Back to the Future trilogy, which sets the scene for Part III to wrap things up superbly.

    • @Ashworth6
      @Ashworth6 2 роки тому +8

      Most of the criticism was because the film was ahead of its time. Unlike most 80s sequels, it doesnt just repeat the first film but has a complex plot that requires the audience to pay attention. Its dark in tone and does not have a resolution, requiring another film to finish the story. Empire Strikes Back attracted similar criticisms and also had mixed reviews when it first came out.

      Canon cinemas remember them but don't think i ever went into one the closest and more local ones to me were the ABC cinemas!

    • @bigredsock1
      @bigredsock1 2 роки тому +1

      @@mrbee4life182 The Cannon Group bought the ABC cinemas from Thorn EMI Screen Entertainment in the 1980s and rebranded all the cinemas as Cannon cinemas.
      In the late 1980s and the 1990s the cinemas changed hands several times. Some cinemas were later rebranded as MGM, some became Virgin multiplexes, other high street cinemas readopted the ABC name, until their owners merged them with the Odeon chain under the Odeon name. The final ABC cinemas at Butlins holiday camps in Minehead and Skegness closed in 2021.

    Wow I haven't seen this review for over 30 years! I taped this because I was so desperate to see the film I'd collect clips from wherever I could and watch them over and over again!
    Disagree with Barry though - I was 12 when BTTF2 came out and I was never confused by the plot. Much as I love the first one I think I've always preferred Part 2. Was so excited to see 'the future' and loved that they didn't go down the usual dystopia route!
    Well until they got back to the present (1985A) at least...

    What I really enjoyed about this movie when it came out was how it generally portrayed the future in a positive way where movies of the future up till then usually portrayed movies set in the future with a lot of gloom and doom and nuclear war.

  • @adrianbradley8513

    Actually BTTF II is my favourite movie of the trilogy BECAUSE of the complicated plot. I understood the whole changing the past storyline but I remember being confused about who the guy in the trench coat giving Marty the letter from the Doc was. I read into him too much and thought that he was going to be a major character. When I watched part III I realised that he was only a minor character but with an important role. I'm glad I first saw part III when it was first released in cinemas long long before the actual year 2015. If I had first watched it only a few years before or after 2015 it wouldn't have been as good. I wonder what people born since 2015 make of part II? BTTF was the film that first started my love, except for Dr Who, of any type of time travel Sci Fi eg movies and novels.

    8 year old me would have hated this review but at 34, I don't think I am too far apart here with Barry. I enjoy BTTF II but the characters very much take a back seat to the special effects. I know most won't agree but I think the third film is superior.

      Part III has definitely improved for me as I've gotten older. And part II (at least the first 20 minutes or so) has started to look just a little bit silly. Still, it's one of the most enjoyable and rewatchable film trilogies of all time, and there's a hell of a lot of great stuff in each movie.

    Barry is correct in his criticism. It isn't as good as Pt1 and Pt3. It serves more as a joining chapter between two better movies. But overall it's still a fun and entertaining movie, that I'd rather watch than a lot of modern specials effect heavy, forced humour crap.

    Part 1 is a classic. Part 2 is a completely different film--far more committed to science fiction than the first, and with an ending that at least EQUALS the ending to the first film, and that's really saying something.

    It's a film that's hard to enjoy as you have to think hard about what's going on to make sense of it. It's not straight forward like BTTF was. I date bet to this day there are 50 somethings still not sure about certain parts of the film.

    I never cared for Barry Norman. Like most film critics, he praised nonsense and objected to anything decent.
    He also made the typical critic mistake of speaking in absolutes, as though there was no opinion other than his own.

    • @mrbee4life182
      @mrbee4life182 2 роки тому +1

      Probably why he didn't go overboard about this but he loved the first one which is still a classic! Yeah he did seem to be harsh on some great films but everyone has their own opinion rightly or wrongly and he was still interesting to listen to although you couldn't always agree with him!

      A 2013 Guardian article quotes Barry as saying:

    • @dhalsim-1

      Some critics were harsh just for the sake of making themselves look intellectually critical. I didn't get that with Barry Norman. He usually seemed quite fair and gave credit where it was due.

    • @gatekeeperboxing5898

      I have never really heard a film critic that was appealing. I found Barry Norman's vocal delivery of the reviews rather dull most of the time. Mark Kermode is awful to listen to aswell. What is more they rarely ever make a film sound interesting and seem to have something bad to say about everything, as if they have a glass half empty mentality. I find if I read the synopsis, check the actors in the film & check who the director is and what films they have made previously, I can usually find a movie that will be fairly enjoyable. I rarely listen to the critics or make choices based on awards or box office or what someone else recommended.
