As long as Robert Zemeckis draws breath on this Earth, he won't allow a Back to the Future reboot. He owns the rights to the movie franchise. Thank God.
If I was driving the DeLorean, stopped at a gas station and got out, I'd ask the first person who came up to me: "Can you tell me what year this is?". ha ha
You know, there something that needs to be said about the atmosphere in this channel. Most channels have video production done to them to intros, medium to crazy transitions over to the next scenes and background music to go with showcasing a car. Jay Leno's is just straight classic in terms of the ambient in car showcases. Each showcase is quiet, peaceful while all the more it contributes to the vehicles history and background he is actually talking about. In other words I'm glad I found this channel.
When I saw Back to the Future all I wanted was that lifted black 85’ Toyota Pickup that Marty got at the end. I pretty much knew a DeLorean was out of the question. 😂
I think more people wanted that truck than the DeLorean honestly. Everytime, and I mean Everytime I talk to someone who grew up with those movies, including me, the truck is what we end up talking about.
People don't realize the amount of work that goes into restoring a movie car, or something like a race car. These guys are really good at what they do, thanks Jay.
Old comment but it's all love. My friend has a BTTF Delorean (his is modeled after II) and it was all built out of love. He bought the Delorean and spent 4 years turning it into a time machine. He bought it piece by little tiny piece. All because he adores BTTF
You should watch Jays video on one of his duesenbergh cars (spelling) he only managed to get the engine and frame original then he manufactured the entire rest of the car using 3D printing and it came out amazing
Robert Zemeckis said as long as he is alive there will never be another BTF movie. Nor a reboot. And he will pass down the rights to his kids as well. He said the movie is done and will stay done.
That's the best thing a filmmaker could ever say, Zemeckis putting his foot down and remaining adamant in keeping _BTTF_ as a Trilogy, no more sequels, not even a remake or reboot. And passing the rights down to kids? Best choice ever.
There needs to be a foundation created that functions as a trust for the IP associated with the rights of movies. It can be a perpetual legal custodian and can distribute funds to trustees-- producer's kids, for example, or to promote film preservation. Maybe it could be associated with the Smithsonian.
I would love to see Jay Leno do an Episode of Christine. That is just one Sexy Beast. If it wasn't for Back to the Future and the 1989 Batman and Ghostbusters. I would not have the love for movies and cars like I do today. They really opened the door for imagination.

Especially The Delorean, General lee, Christine, Ecto-1, and K.I.T.T. they are all my friends. Including everyone ive mentioned in this list.

What a truly awesome episode of Jay Leno's garage, it was more of Jay interviewing the man and the movie than about the car for a while there and I was really really into it.
One of the best trilogies I've ever experienced in my younger years. I tortured my mother to bring me to Show Case Cinemas in Danvers Mass time and time again when i was 12 years old, and she delivered! Love you MOM!
I remember seeing back to the future 20 times in 85. From the first time as a 10 year old boy I have always wanted a delorian. Definitely will always be my dream car. I don't care what anyone says about delorians. Slow, bad quality, ECT. I don't care, one day I will have one!
Get one. I'll tell you this man if you have the want and the love and passion you will get one. I have a friend who has a BTTF Delorean (it's a part 2 one so it has the Mr Fusion) and he is a teacher. He doesn't make a lot of money but he adores BTTF. He wanted the car so he bought a Delorean and over the course of a few years slowly turned it into a time machine. He bought piece by little piece and eventually got a full screen accurate replica.
I love Jay. I grew up on Jay. Love him on the tonight show. Love his car speak. This is a true blue collar man. Worked very hard to get where hes at and still works and entertains and interviews lol.

The power of love is a curious thing Make a one man weep, make another man sing Change a heart to a little white dove More than a feeling, that's the power of love Tougher than diamonds, whips like cream Stronger and harder than a bad girls dream Make a bad one good, mmm make a wrong right Power of love will keep you home at night
I drive a movie car as well (JP jeep) and it's crazy how many people will look straight through a Lamborghini or maclaren and oogle at your car instead. Can be annoying sometimes when people won't let you merge cus they are taking a photo but when you see a fellow movie car it's a blast.
No other car has to be guarded as closely at car shows and cruises. For some reason people will just walk up and sit in it. Met a guy who had made a bar that goes across the door jamb.
Peter Anderson, it is not a sound level meter, it is a functional RTA (Real Time Analyzer) unit. The led bars respond to a different sound frequency each. From low frequencies to high frecuencies (left to right in that order). Notice it when Jay turns on the engine, the far left led bar peaks red from the engine rumble (23:35). Pretty nice detail.
In the BTTF universe they call it the Christmas tree. What it is suppose to do is actually show the power output of the car. In the films it is usually just hovering around the green area and once the flux capacitor powers up it jumps to the red on all bars. guess its in a demo mode in this car as looks a lot cooler moving than just being at the bottom. Wish they did a segment at night with the flux band on. Did you know in the film those lights were actually white but the camera they used made them look blue
I think those of us who grew up in the 80s earned our love for cars through the movies. I vividly remember going to Universal Studios as a kid and being awestruck by picture cars that would be on display. At one point, the line to get on the Universal Tram Ride circled around Ecto 1, which I thought was the coolest thing. But you got to see the BTTF car, the A-Team van, KITT, and the Magnum PI Ferrari all up close! I know that, for me, it really had an impact on me.
the way I heard the story of entrapment, was that a fed was reading a newspaper one day and there was a story about John D. the fed thought if I could get this guy, it would be a big promotion, a big boost to his career. So he set out posing as a drug guy that could help john get out of his financial problems. John D was told that they had his family under surveillance, and something could happen to them if he failed to cooperate .. In the end he agreed .. I think that was all explained on 60 minutes..
6:12... somewhere on that Delorean is a microphone that is directly connected to that display near the door... you can see the levels bop up and down as he's talking to Jay...
HEY! Hey...... It did WELL considering it is basically a cut out sheet for SPOONS!!!! She was heavy. Let me put you under the hood and see if YOU fire on all cylinders. Hahaha!
Well John Delorean made too many big plans and factorys and land for this car before it was even out and it ate up all of his money fast, he was looking for a quick fix to bail out his company . A undercover sting for cocaine was it, when your desperate of your company sinking you'll do anything to stay a float. Its sad the guy who made the GTO possible was taken out that way.
My dad almost got a DeLorean in the 80s when we lived out in Berkeley, California. He however knew we were going to be moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan the next year and being a native of Michigan he knew the DeLorean was probably not the best car during a Michigan winter. Still, I wish he had gotten it, even though I was still a toddler. It would have been awesome to have pics of 3-5 year old me behind the wheel of one!
Actually the execs at those companies could give a rip. Think about it, they would have screwed up the movie and it prob wouldn’t be the hit that it is today.
@Michael Lam Pretty racist, sexist, and ageist thing to write. If you want to be fair, "old white men" wrote and directed and invented most of the best stuff in the world, including writing, directing, and often acting in movies.
This episode talked enough about movies to make me feel like I was watching the Tonight Show, a nice feeling since I haven't watched so much as 10 seconds of it since Jay left.
I auditioned with Michael J. Fox for, what became his first tv work. A little show called "Leo and Me" produced by the CBC up here in Canada. You can find some footage of the show here on UA-cam. Later, I went to the same high school as Mike. A great guy all round.
there are some iconic movie cars that just define a decade and are priceless today. In the 60's it was the bullitt mustang. the 70's had the trans am from smokey and the bandit. the 80's had this.
Different generation sure, but the delorean is still more iconic than anything else, as new generation kids know what the time machine is. You ask them what the general lee, the interceptor, kitt or the ateam van they have no clue what you’re talking about.
I saw the original at Paramount Carowins Park 1994 which was awesome!! But it sat outside so long that they had do a restoration before it went to the Peterson museum
Are you're sure you aren't talking about Universal studios in Florida? Cause I don't really recall the BTTF DeLoran being there at Carowinds and it's one of my favorite places to go to.
Why would 564 people bother to Thumbs Down this Video Footage. Back to the Future is one of the best Time Travel movies of all Time (No Pun intended) All Three movies are amazing & still worth watching to this very Day.
I remember seeing a red one along with a yellow one and an unpainted one all together for sale at a used car dealer in Monterey many years ago. Always thought they were beautiful cars.
This was great, love Back to the Future and The Delorean. Jay, can you do a piece about The General Lee 69 Dodge Charger from The Dukes of Hazzard tv show? Would love to see you take the wheel of the big Dodge Charger!
Darren O'Connor that was just for the show's storyline. Some of the stunt cars had the doors welded shut for safety reasons, but on most General Lee's, the doors open. The reason for it in the show was that it was supposed to be a race car.
Max Power, yes, I know, but my point is that anyone who is likely to build a General Lee replica Charger is more than likely to weld the doors shut so that it will accurately replicate the "hero" versions of the car we saw in all the close up shots, and again, I'm not sure Jay wants to climb in through the window.
What a stupid missed opportunity for film studios to not keep and maintain their studios biggest movies' props, gather them all and open a museum on the studio lot and charge admission
As someone who always loved cars one of my biggest disappointments as a teen was seeing the deloran and fast and furious cars at universal just completely sun baked and in bad shape. I was so angry I actually went and asked an employee how they could do that and he said he only serves ice cream so scram.
It is insane how little value they place on the original, historic props, and sets etc. Yet thry will try and make millions off Replicas and Toys.. Capitalism at Work, I guess. Same with Lost In Space, Genral Lee from Dukes of Hazard, etc etc.
@@Alvin-1138 I suspect they kept one General Lee for close ups and used that throughout the series, but I once read they destroyed something like 80 to 100 Dodge Chargers while making the TV show. Every time it got airborne = destroyed car. (I would also assume that after awhile they could just recycle some of the shots).
@@comicus01 there was an excellent documentary if you're into cars/props ! From what I remember the closest thing to one of the main cars was found in a junkyard in Tennessee or Arkansas something like that. But your guesstimate was pretty close from what I remember.
@@Alvin-1138 I'm not into props, and although this is a big car channel, aside from Top Gear with the 3 Wise Men, not much of a car guy either. I've seen maybe 12 to 15 of Jay's videos. @@MPDLR Indiana Jones and what? You're dreaming mate. That movie doesn't exist. Nothing to see here. Now look into this pen. BLINK.
Interesting how the level meter behind the driver seat is voice activated.
I was really wondering if anyone else was going to notice that lol.
Valen Greymoon same
At first I thought they were random, then I noticed them being in time with the audio. Thats attention to detail!!
noticed that. now i have to look and see if it does it in the movie
Yeah I was watching that lol
I just love this kind of backstory! This is awesome!
That's the power of love - Huey Lewis and the News
jvan and Huey was worried that his career would be in jeopardy if the movie bombed because he had a very unique Hueylike cameo. Fortunately it did very well
What a truly awesome episode of Jay Leno's garage, it was more of Jay interviewing the man and the movie than about the car for a while there and I was really really into it.
One of the best interviews ever done on this channel. Thank you!
Funny how the green audio spectrum in the car syncs with their voices. This car hears them.
I KNEW SOMETHIN WAS OFF LOL
It does, it's a spectrum analyzer connected to a microphone. 👍🏻

Doc brown doesn’t drive a f**king Mustang 🤣🤣 i like that guy
Marty’s mom would most likely be the mustang driver.
Came looking for this comment!
He definitely fleshes out is characters!
I need that on a tshirt
One does not simply drive a f**king Mustang.
Doc Brown doesn't drive a fu..ing mustang...........awesome!!!
set the time to be at the 1/4 mile finish line before the mustang takes off
Couldn't get that on the first time.
SPACE TRUCKER I love mustangs, but a mustang as a time machine would be atrocious
But in back to the future part 2 theres a modified future mustang
SPACE TRUCKER I laughed so hard when I heard that. Hahaha mustang
I love that when they speak, the green lights behind the driver's seat animate! Cool detail!
I love Jay. I grew up on Jay. Love him on the tonight show. Love his car speak. This is a true blue collar man. Worked very hard to get where hes at and still works and entertains and interviews lol.
THUMBS UP if you hear Huey Lewis in the background playing in your head!
tell me doctor, where are we going this time
is this the 50's, or 1999
all I wanted to do was play guitar and sing
so take me away, I don't mind
but you better promise me we'll be back in time
The power of love is a curious thing
Make a one man weep, make another man sing
Change a heart to a little white dove
More than a feeling, that's the power of love
Tougher than diamonds, whips like cream
Stronger and harder than a bad girls dream
Make a bad one good, mmm make a wrong right
Power of love will keep you home at night
I'm afraid you're just too darn loud....
I'm like '85
This is my favorite episode. I love the questions going both ways.
It's easier to get a Delorean to go back in time than to get it up to 88mph.
First F bomb on Jay Leno's Garage!
hahhaa!
Oy vey!
And how appropriate that it refers to a Mustang!
"Doc doesn't drive a sh** car like a Mustang" xD
I've heard that story from a couple of different sources, and that seems to be the exact quote each time.
One of your best shows ever Jay. These two guys are hilarious. Like Abbott and Costello, Burlap, and Gunny . The Sack Bros.
I love the time machine from the sequel with the fusion generator.
Oh right. I have to admit, I do love that it was run off of a branded kitchen appliance called "Mr. Fusion" 😂
Krups coffee grinder from Back to the Future and Alien.
Too funny, just saw a DeLorean on the road yesterday, which is pretty rare--looked SO good, looked like a spaceship among cars
GETUP AND GO which is why the producers chose that car
For sure, Doc Brown doesn't drive a f***ing Mustang
If I saw this next to a Bugatti at a car show, I’d walk up to this first. Such a cool and timeless design.
Same here, it looked absolutely amazing on the road when I saw it a couple days ago
Theres a show room with like 25 of them in naples florida
I only wished Jay did this presentation while wearing a red vest jacket. It just feels fitting.
Also the self lacing Nike sneakers
Might be one of the few series where all 3 series were perfect..
The second film was the weakest IMHO and the third was not quite but almost as good as the first... in different ways.
@Luke Meier wtf are you smoking
Girlfriend Jennifer cast changed, you called that perfect?? Same goes with Iron Man series where one Rodney cast change ruins the whole story
Wasn't a fan of the third one as much. The proposed third one sounded better
Not much turns heads on the street more than a Back to the Future Delorean.
I drive a movie car as well (JP jeep) and it's crazy how many people will look straight through a Lamborghini or maclaren and oogle at your car instead. Can be annoying sometimes when people won't let you merge cus they are taking a photo but when you see a fellow movie car it's a blast.
Errhka, JP = what? ....Jurassic Park?
No other car has to be guarded as closely at car shows and cruises. For some reason people will just walk up and sit in it. Met a guy who had made a bar that goes across the door jamb.
guy in my area has a delorean with the plate Mcfly,, too cool
Yep. Been to car shows where there's a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, and a DeLorean and the DMC got all the attention. No one cared about the other two.
It's the most beloved prop from one of the most beloved movies of all time. It makes everyone smile.
"when i backed my miura into my other miura"...said literally only one person, ever.
Best car to be in when you get pulled over for speeding :)
"Officer... write me a ticket for 88mph and I'll pay any fine you like" xD
Goes to courtJudge: what's the crimeOfficer: Speeding in a DMC DeLoreanJudge: GET OUT. LOL
If it can ever go fast enough to be considered speeding.
your comment as of now has 88 likes...
"Do you know that we clocked you at 90 miles an hour?"… "Can't be, because if I were going that fast ... you wouldn't see me/I wouldn't be here" :-)
I love this! Thanks to Jay Leno for highlighting this car! I loved this car EVEN before the movie!
8:39 Jaw's 9 where the shark is driving a bus. Well with some movies in recent history, your not far off.
thejunkman Jaws 19, came out in 2015. And the shark still looked fake.
It's silly to suggest that a shark might drive a bus. They might lurk in tornadoes however.
Or hell cars fighting subs and jumping off planes.
This is simply awesome. Good to see Joe and Terry and the passion they had for this restoration.
Bob should have got the 1986 Oscar for best screenplay. The perfect screenplay. Hero.
The best sentence of the video: "This car has an agent."
J Johnson hahahahaha amazing
Anyone else notice the graphic equalizer moving to the conversation?
It's a spectrum analyzer. ;-)
Probably more likely that it's just a level meter pretending to be a spectrum analyzer.
Pretty nice detail.
.Mayhap you're right John - I'll have a closer look. What pedants we are!
The car had around 130 horse power or 1.21 gigawatts
Horse power, This is still America,,,,,, for now.
gas engine is 130... flux capacitor is 1.21 ^_^
West -- What's funny is that he pronounced it "Jigawatts" in the movie, LOL.....
Martys toyota probably would have blown the doors off the Delorian lol
IronClad292 - Absolutely Right! It's not "jig", it's "Gig". WHY didn't someone tell Christopher Lloyd so that he didn't sound phony??
the way I heard the story of entrapment, was that a fed was reading a newspaper one day and there was a story about John D. the fed thought if I could get this guy, it would be a big promotion, a big boost to his career.
Ahh, man, I'd love to own a DeLorean. Those things are pretty awesome!
Did anyone else think @2:02 Jay was going to say "Well, let's go back to the Future".
Lol
😂
The car is the star
Ha! now after watching it again. Yes!
Yes 😄
Loved the documentary and great to see these guys committed to restoring movie car history.
no mention of Ready Player One!? Bringing it back to the screen and a new Generation of fans!
"Everything fired on all cylinders"
Except for the car, of course.
Underrated comment.
140 hp, 120 mph top speed. The engine ran fine. All the rest, however....
HEY! Hey...... It did WELL considering it is basically a cut out sheet for SPOONS!!!! She was heavy. Let me put you under the hood and see if YOU fire on all cylinders. Hahaha!
Lmao
🤣🤣🤣🤣
"Jaws 9, where the shark is driving a bus"!!! aahahhaha im done.
'He was my hero until he was caught with cocaine'
..but Jay, you're still good friends with Tim Allen..
Well Delorean was selling coke to keep the company alive. Allen was just a cokehead.
WOW
Tim admitted it.....
@@DirkDeadeye A very good point.
Great Scott!
All those companies who rejected it, feel stupid now
Yeah...40 times being rejected is crazy!
Actually the execs at those companies could give a rip. Think about it, they would have screwed up the movie and it prob wouldn’t be the hit that it is today.
I don't think I could take that kind of rejection, again.
The movie wouldn't be as cool without an unknown car
@Michael Lam Pretty racist, sexist, and ageist thing to write. If you want to be fair, "old white men" wrote and directed and invented most of the best stuff in the world, including writing, directing, and often acting in movies.
This episode talked enough about movies to make me feel like I was watching the Tonight Show, a nice feeling since I haven't watched so much as 10 seconds of it since Jay left.
It's difficult to hit joy, excitement, wonder, and dreams... in one video Jay. You were brave enough to try... and succeed.
Levi's must love Jay Leno
He's also a Canadian diplomat
"Plutonium! You cant just go down to your local store and purchase plutonium. Wait a minute Doc, are you telling me that this Sucker is Nuclear!""
No this suckers electric but it need a nuclear explosion to generate the 1.21 gigawatts
Find some Kombi guys.
Simple heat and mechanics .
1.21 GIGAWATTS?!?
one! point twenty-one! gigawatts!?
"Just wait 'til it does 88mph"
DeLorean, never goes above 82mph: "Any day now"
Dr. Emmett Brown: When this thing gets up to 88 mph, you're gonna see some serious s***.
I auditioned with Michael J. Fox for, what became his first tv work. A little show called "Leo and Me" produced by the CBC up here in Canada. You can find some footage of the show here on UA-cam.
Later, I went to the same high school as Mike. A great guy all round.
SOUND ACTIVATED LED's, Cooooool
there are some iconic movie cars that just define a decade and are priceless today. In the 60's it was the bullitt mustang. the 70's had the trans am from smokey and the bandit. the 80's had this.
e s and don't forget the General Lee
Never forget the General Lee as one of the most iconic cars also.
Or Mad Max's V8 Interceptor!
Different generation sure, but the delorean is still more iconic than anything else, as new generation kids know what the time machine is. You ask them what the general lee, the interceptor, kitt or the ateam van they have no clue what you’re talking about.
Chill Theres a lot iconic cars ghostbusters Cadillac wagon, batmobile, Knight rider, Herbie, Eleanor & my favorite then turbo interceptor "the wraith"
Beautifully done. The car took my breath away. Congrats.
When you find the BTF DeLorean driving in 2020
Me: Why are you here?! Get back to 1985 everything sucks here!!
Well, it should've been flying since 2015.
Why would 564 people bother to Thumbs Down this Video Footage.
Back to the Future is one of the best Time Travel movies of all Time (No Pun intended)
All Three movies are amazing & still worth watching to this very Day.
Freedom of speech is the right to offend. "While I do not agree with your view, i will defend your right to say it to the death"
I'm not sure Jay would want to climb through the window to get in.
Darren O'Connor Lee 1 the doors open. Its the one that did the jump in Georgia
EPIC EPIC EPIC car...one of the most iconic cars in movie history. I would love to ride in one once..
But I do know that Dukes of Hazzard was filmed in Southern CA. Doesn't mean that one of the original cars can't end up in TN or AR, but that would be a bit unusual.
Just love these movies.
In my eyes they're perfect.
I watched them many times.
And this car is a huge part of the movie that makes it fun to watch.
I was 17 and a Junior in High School in 1985 when this movie came out, just like Marty if I’m correct. Also my parents attended High School together in the late 50’s, early 60’s so I really identified with it. I love the plot and the casting for the characters was perfect. Just a fun film that I’ll sit and watch every time it’s on!
17:55 Don't forget about the 3 Gold-plated DeLoreans
