Some of these games aren't exactly obscure come to think of it, but all of them are definitely worth playing in my opinion.

I never owned an N64, but I did play the demo stand at the toy store I worked at ..especially once we moved it into the break room! 😝
My fondest memory, though, was during the launch. A man in a Hawaiian shirt came up the escalator eager to purchase the new system. Setting him up with the games, needed and optional accessories, we chatted about our love of video games for about 45 minutes and he was one of the nicest people I had ever met!

Back in the day, my local Toys R Us had around 8 demo kiosks, four running Mario 64. We were supposed to only demo for 10 minutes before moving-on, but my bro and I would spend hours there on Sundays, starting a new file each time, and competing against each other on how far we could get how quickly before leaving. We were never kicked-off because we would always draw a crowd as we learned new tricks and shortcuts. After a couple of months the store manager thanked us, as thanks to us they sold twice the number of N64's and games on Sundays than any other day of the week.

Wow, an N64 Top 10 without Goldeneye is almost unimaginable and probably considered sacrilegious by many in today's toxic online gaming community. It's certainly one of my favourites on the system thanks to the countless hours I spent playing it with friends in multiplayer. But I'm glad you enjoyed the console and its games. And it's good to see a list that's not predictable. Mad props for putting Sin and Punishment on your list, too. You also make a great point about how the game libraries of the systems in that generation, especially the Saturn and N64, complemented each other instead of being essentially the same like in today's gaming world, making them all worth owning for their specific game libraries.

For anyone who loves the AKI-engine pro wrestling games on the N64, I can only heartily recommend the "Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 - freem edition". It's the most developed/expansive version of the AKI developed engine, translated into english, with lots of your favourite and greatest pro wrestlers added to the roster if they weren't already in the base game. On top of that you get a great wrestler creator.
Great video! I like the nod to NBA Hangtime, which would be on my top ten. Smash Bros. is not on the list to my surprise, but everyone has they're own taste and hardly anyone was able to play all the best games on the N64 back in the day, as kid, teen or even young adult, you just don't have the money.

I had just bought a Kodak DC-260 (1.2mp) digital camera and brought it with me to work that day. This would have been from December 1998. The photo is of my friends, Steve K, and Tim M.. Those were the days. I loved working there! Oh, and I took the Zelda standee, PlayStation neon sign, and even the 9" monochrome CRT (used with our register POS), home with me. I still have them today. 😁
Soon after this photo, I left the store to take over management of another Babbage's store in the capital region. I helped ready other stores for the Dreamcast launch, as well as the PS2, and Xbox launches. Some of the best years of my life were at these places. It was a challenging, and sometimes (Black Friday - January 15th) stressful position, but where else are you going to be surrounded by stuff you LOVE, and get paid to chat with customers about video games!? I traded in Revenge to pre-order No Mercy, then got a second cheaper copy of Revenge later on because I missed the roster. I still played No Mercy more, can't beat a true character creation, but Revenge always had a place in my rotation. I loved the intro that had the trucker stop in front of Sting, only to say, "What!?" I'm certain that's the same trucker that drove into Raccoon City and got bit, then later nearly ran over Leon and Claire.

Had an N64 & a PS1 back then. While the N64 didn't have anywhere near the quantity that the PS1 had, the major releases for it seemed to come out every 4 or 5 months, and the titles always had a very special, magical feel to them that made you happy to own the console. That was also the era where Rareware were at the very peak of their game, which didn't hurt.

Since we're seemingly all going in on top ten lists, I may as well share my own here:
10: Star Fox 64. It was a toss-up between this one and Shadows of the Empire, my very first game for the N64, but I give it to McCloud in the end because I'm a sucker for the (actually voiced) story here that felt more engaging than the sidestory of Dash Rendar, and while shadows IS the more varied game... Star Fox 64 just feels so much more fun to play.
    9. Mario Party. The almost best multiplayer game on my list, but funnily enough while it was fun to compete for coins it's really the music and stages I remember. Something about the "worlds" the gang partied in felt incredibly inviting to kid me, as I'm a big fan of Mario's particular colorful worlds, and the All Clear song is such an ear-worm I love it to this day. And while Mario Golf's music is great and I liked playing that against others too... Mario Party's action makes it a funnier multiplayer Mario game for me.
    8. Goldeneye. I credit this game with honestly making me GET FPS games. I certainly had played FPS games for PC before this, but I woul always use the cheats and simply coast on the stages. This was a game where I actually had to learn to PLAY the games, and I will always remember it for those lessons. Those lessons, and alternative objectives. Really made the FPS-world feel so much more interactive than just running around and shooting stuff in Doom.
    7. Super Mario 64. This is... a BETTER game than many of those I am about to mention, but I actually got to this game very LATE in my N64-era so the games I put above it are games that I have much stronger emotional connections to. But one simply can't deny Mario 64's strengths, it's just that I kinda feel other platformers and such had more engaging worlds than JUST Peach's castle.
    6. Mischief Makers. And SPEAKING of charm and character! As a budding weeb everything about this games anime atmosphere and varied mix of gameplay styles burrowed into my brain and started my love for Treasure. I played their earlier games on emulation later on, but this is the first time I got hooked on their fast-paced style and I'll never forget it.
    5. Donkey Kong 64. BIGGER. An absolutely massive game back in the day when I really only HAD this one game to dig into, and even if I acknowledge it's exhausting back then even, it had arcade games, tons of stuff to collect, weapons, and even if I liked Donkey Kong Country's worlds, exploring DK Isle and all it's teleportation pads was fun too.
    4. Banjo Kazooie. No platform game did it better in my eyes. The colors, the characters, the transformation, the world that unfolded before you... I was all in on this from the start. My first actual big N64 platformer, and an incredible memory to this day. Smaller than DK64, but also FAR more manageable.
    3. Mystical Ninja 1. So my favorite games are pretty similar in gameplay, because they truly felt like massive worlds you could explore and when I was a kid that was what I REALLY liked about video games. Entering something that feels like a whole, big world, a magical place you could travel to Narnia-style by opening the right door. And Mystical Ninja may not be the prettiest, deepest or most well-thought out such world, but good god it is the FUNNIEST one. This one is vibes only, I had so much fun with Mystical Ninjas musical adventure that ALSO included the blessing that is Impact (I was a Power Rangers fan, I was lost from the start) which gave some real fun combat depth and variety to this game. Lots of games here are probably better than Mystical Ninja 1... but NONE of them had Impact.
    2. Ocarina of Time. The intro-song. The world. THIS, is a world you enter and it changes your brain chemistry forever. Going from kid to "adult", seeing the world change before your eyes, growing gradually stronger and stronger as you acquire more tools... Ocarina of Time was a journey that, for all that it's story these days is simplicity itself, felt like an adventure made JUST for me. It was magical.
    1. Majora's Mask. Ocarina of Time, but with a far more twisted story and lots of transformations. Once more I'm not sure i can say that MM is the better designed game, but when I first thought that Ocarina Of Time was as big as a plot could go, this one came along and absorbed me completely. I bounce between the two, but right now I this is the game I feel for the most.

    1. Ocarina of Time
    2. Super Mario 64
    3. Star Fox 64
    4. GoldenEye 007
    5. Banjo Kazooie
    6. Jet Force Gemini
    7. Resident Evil 2
    8. Mischief Makers
    9. Rogue Squadron
    10. Turok 2
It's definitely hard for me to whittle it down to just ten games, though. Played the hell out of the system, still do on a regular basis. My honorable mentions would be Wave Race, 1080 Snowboarding (still my favorite sports game of all time), Perfect Dark, Ridge Racer 64, Beetle Adventure Racing, and Wipeout 64. Ironically, I can't stand Mario Kart 64. Always felt Diddy Kong Racing was way better for some reason.

This is my favorite generation of gaming. I know later gen consoles will perfect the formulas and will make "better" games, but I do not think that the number of games from this gen which people consider great, and even some GOATs, is coincidence. The innovation the N64, PSX, Saturn, and the rest brought to the table revolutionized the industry. Modern gen consoles are still using the blueprints created by this gen.

I feel like WCW/nWo: Revenge had the best roster of any wrestling game on the N64. You could play as surfer Sting, yellow and red Hulk Hogan, or American made Lex Luger. You could bring back the Hart Foundation or play as future WWE champions like Chris Jericho and Eddie Guerrero. That one roster encompassed so many greats from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. It was just the crossroads for multiple generations of wrestling.

That game is a culmination of everything from Wrestlemania 2000, Revenge and World Tour, there really wasn’t anything that could match No Mercy, it hits all the right places, it just felt right and the CAW and customisation was crazy good and with friends along with a couple of buddies, in a battle of who isthe true king of kings, which lead to some unforgettable matches.
