I was astonished when I found out that the wiki for Speed Freaks exist and how well it was made and redacted. I wanted to thank you once more - things mentioned in the Speed Freaks wiki were REALLY helpful while making this video. Big respect, seriously.
I'm glad that it was enjoyable for someone who was so into this game!

Polish Official PlayStation Magazine had... some really interesting opinions (when they were actually theirs and not just copied and translated from the UK magazine). Still remember them calling Digimon World a game that will "dethrone the Pokemon series" (though UK said something really similiar) while making many weird mistakes about the game, clearly showing that they have no idea what are they writing about. ...and look where are we now.
But they actually did a really nice 4-page review of Speed Freaks and gave it a 9. And when CTR came out (which also got a 9) they still said that SF was the better game.

Had to turn off the video after Mario Kart 64 got complimented, the worst MK in history... Instead of showing the The Smurfs Kart racer on PS1 that is way superior. Also I never had a multitap for the PS1 but I always loved the look of it somehow. Looks so bulky and lame that it becomes cool again, even cooler if it was able to actually connect it without a dumb cable... Even though I expected a boomerang joke when you held it like that!
I think I once actually played this for a short time when trying out basically every kart racer that existed on the PS1 and had my fun with it! Loved the aesthetic of it, gave me nostalgic feelings for that whole Y2K time era that many indies try to emulate nowadays but quite can't hit it right.
Makes me miss the time when there were tons of kart racers, now it feels like a wasteland except for Mario Kart and some fairly average Nickolodeon ones that just don't quite hit right anymore when being an adult, totally not because I don't recognize like 90% of the roster since I haven't seen any new shows in many years...
Also justice for Homing Missile, it deserved a spot on S just for how it looks. Sharks are cool! I would even hug one. And I would lose my mind on some of those rather long tracks that go for like 6 minutes and getting owned in the last lap of it and having to replay it... again and again. But hey, that's the beauty of kart racers and rubberbanding. Just wouldn't be the same without it. Luckily the game doing that also taught me a new Polish swear word! Not very wholesome though... unlike the wholesome and precious story about the game and your mom, hits your righti n the feels with the BTN ost playing too! ;_;7
And nice copy of DoA X3! Just as nice as the video! Makes me wanna play it again and I think that's kinda the best thing a video about a game can do, I think!

Sheesh... it's so weird to be "on the other side" and be the one replying to YOUR comment on MINE video. ...it feels nice though.
Hol' up. Respect your elders: MK64 for its time REALLY was great and I still think it's a great game to play even today! ...and don't overexaggerate it: Super Mario Kart, Super Circuit, DS and 7 were worse! ...sure, a SNES game and portable games aren't that much of a competition, but still! I can't say much about Wii and Double Dash as I had limited exposure to them and I'm not a game journalist to give my opinion like that. ...and hey... remember about Mario Kart Tour...
Smurf Racer (Smurf Kart is actually the new game! Didn't knew they made one... come to think of it, Smurfs are reliving a bit of a renaissance when it comes to video games... there's so many of them now! Just like with Asterix & Obelix... I wish they would make a new Lucky Luke game) was quite okay, but... would I recommend it? Only if I had someone to do hardcore moneymatches with, I guess! And the game is PRICY as hell and you know my policy! ...btw. it amuses me greatly that the PAL title is "3, 2, 1, Smurf!: My First Racing Game"... well, to be honest... they're not lying! It's certainly basic enough to be a babby's first kart racer.
I actually to wanted to mention Bomberman Fantasy Racing (which, while not especially GREAT was charming and had few decent ideas), but then came up with "let's mention only karting games" (after already mentioning Wipeout and N.GEN). I would like to make a video on it... or about PS1 era Bomberman games as a whole. I love the series. Too bad that Hudson screw it so badly that they had to be bought by Konami (even if Super Bomberman R games are... okay. 2 could be even called kinda great).
Oh! And then there was Chocobo Racing! Controversial opinion but I like it really, REALLY much! Too bad it's such a rare game...
Come to think of it... one COULD make a channel strictly about weird karting/racing games and there would be a lifetime of content.
And yeah, it's sad that as time went, there were less and less of this type of games (PS2 had quite a lot of them but they were kinda bad 90% of the time). BUT! ...PS3 had a few decent ones. I'm gonna sell you on a really good hidden gem. F1 Race Stars. Seriously. If not for Wipeout and Speed Freaks, that would be the racer of my choice. It's an amazing game on its own, but there's actually so much fanservice and care if you're a motorsports fan that it's not even funny.
I was so disappointed with multitap for PS2... it's... just an ordinary brick. BORING!
Yeah. It's great. And that's something that I wish I have mentioned more in the video: characters were so expressive (instead of being static objects like in CTR, MK64 and many other previous and future games)! Seeing them taunt other racers as they passed them by was great.
And you know... there's Garfield Kart... (don't play it!)
Homing Missile is really great! I was SO close to getting it to S! And yeah, I love that design too. It looked great on old fighter planes. Too bad that newer ones are shaped in such a way that you can't paint fun shark faces. The worst part wasn't replaying the track itself... it was the fact that it was last stage of 4. You got 1st place in the first three? Cool, but it doesn't matter because you screwed up on the last one. So you had to go through ~15 minutes just to TRY the stage again. That was painful. They weren't AS tough as Sunset Isle, but you could get screwed easily.
Aw, sorry. There is funny story with that line. Basically, I wrote the original script for the video while having high fever from flu. When looking back through it to prepare for the reading I've noticed that desperate cry of frustration that the sick me has written and had no heart to change it. So sorry! But now you know how to politely tell someone from Poland to go away and leave you alone.
It's a really shameful story that keeps me up at nights. It's really funny how I have problems with remembering important stuff but there are just so many weird gaming anecdotes. But yeah... BtN is a game that I want to make a multi-hour video of. Seriously, while it's so outdated, it was game that broke the mold. I remember EVERYONE from my family and friends being fascinated and impressed by seeing the game.
Can't wait to get Venus Vacation Prism to join X3, X2 and the original to complete the collection. Nice eye btw! I hoped that someone would notice!
And I'm really happy that you've enjoyed it! Especially since you don't watch UA-cam all that much! Thanks.

@@Hodyna Even back then I didn't enjoy playing it too much and always wanted to play Crash Team Racing instead with friends because it was just so superior for me, but they wanted MK64 so... At least they managed to follow it up with the best one, Double Dash! I don't particularly like the original or the GBA one either and 7 is just so bang-average that it's a bit sad but DS as one of the worst?! That's almost a nuclear take actually. Even when having to play on the limited tracks and with Shy Guy because not everyone had the game it was still so much fun. But I guess that goes for every kart racer in multiplayer. Also the missions mode on the DS was amazing, they need to bring that back! (Tour just does not count)
The PS1 has like a bunch of those kart racers that make you think, why did this need to be one? Especially the one from Woody Woodpecker, words can't describe how much I hate that bird but... his racer was actually pretty good somehow. Went into it thinking I will hate it because of him but was greeted with an enjoyable experience... Still hate him though. And I actually also hate the Smurfs. Had to switch the channel every time they were on. Was one of those boomer shows that just was a bit too boomer-like for me... Also they had tons of those music Cds where they just parodied a bunch of popular pop songs with their Smurfs voice and a friend loved hearing those as kids and I was a bit traumatized by it maybe.
Yay, a game I actually own on disc, I loved Bomberman Fantasy Racing! And always hated how they switched to a totally normal kart racer on the PS2 later instead of keep using the animals. Gives it way more flair. I had the idea on making a video on it too but didn't really felt like I could really turn it one, so maybe you can! Or about the whole PS1 Bomberman era, which I never really played. I loved the ones on N64 though! I enjoyed the Battle Royale Bomberman for a while, it was like a perfect fit together. Sure, there were battle passes and all that but no P2W and just classic Bomberman really for free. Too bad the servers lasted like... a year?
The only things I know about F1 is basically that we Germans had some top drivers with Schuhmacher and Vettel and... that's it, that's my knowledge so I don't think it would be a great fit for me, even if its a great game. Always wanted to check out the Little Big Planet Kart racer or ModNation Racers on the PS3 but those really lived through custom-creations by users so not sure if that's still worth it. Gotta check if people managed to put up private servers.
I mean everyone knows about Garfield Kart! The second one even kinda.. is a playable game. Wild Animal Racing, now THAT is one for the ages.
Yeah, multi-stage tournaments can be a pain in the butt if you have to re-do it all if you lose a single match but in a way, that's what makes it fun. At least back in the day. Biting your teeth out on a hard game that otherwise maybe doesn't have too much to offer. Which most kart racers don't really. Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing are some of the few that actually try to actually have a story and special stuff instead of just... here you go, go do normal races and win. If only Mario Kart learned from Diddy Kong Racing...
That's just life, who needs important information stored when you can have just important memories instead? Even if both are pretty important... It sometimes hurts my heart that nowadays I can't play BtN for too long before I get a bit bored already while as a kid I could spend hours in it and never felt bored at all. A shame what happened to the franchise really. No other farming game just quite hit like the old HM games. (Totally not because of all the nostalgic bias)
Hoping that someone would notice you buy and play pervy games? Hmmm.. suspicious!

@@Vanserchan Mario Kart 64 is a lot more casual and has pretty "flat" tracks, but it's still pretty solid. Would I pick it over CTR? ...not really... but then again, CTR is nearly 3 years "fresher". I didn't say it's one of the worst, but I had more fun playing 64 than DS. It just... didn't gel with me all that muche. Here, I've said it. Snaking destroyed that game for me. But yeah, "game sharing" was pretty based.
Seriously? When I was young I LOVED the Smurfs (and I also remember the cringy smurfified song discs... they were regularly scoring as top sellers here)! The platformer with them was actually quite good and I have really fond memories of it.
I mean... Bomberman Kart wasn't ALL THAT BAD... outside of it looking like a PS1 game and bombermen having very... bootlegy artstyle. But yeah, nothing can beat Fantasy racing. I'm still shocked to be honest that Square never tried to make FF7 Chocobo Racing a full-fledged game, with raising and breeding mechanics... Eh, another potential-video-to-the-ever-growing-pile.
Hey, even for someone who isn't into real racing it's a great game, seriously, give it a spin if you can get it cheap (PC version is really hard to run nowadays, so I suggest PS3) - you won't be disappointed. Not only them, German motorsport is a HUGE thing, really. With the Mercedes domination (who for a long time, and still to this day a bit, were the "bad guys" of Formula 1) or how powerful the german car manufacturers are (Porsche for example took EVERY championship in each series they took part in. That's insane). Also, hot take - LBP Karting and ModNation Racers still have quite good single player, so I also would suggest trying them.
Also, I forgot to add that in the previous comment... what Speed Freaks to extremely well is the fact that there's pretty much no rubberbanding (other than opponents getting really good items, with chances just like the human player has) - if you play well you can easily lap everyone on the track. It's just tough because the game is chaotic. Bots have the same restriction as humans have (but can't really dodge weapons). Also, the fact that they can shoot BACKWARDS is something that blew my mind, as its really rare even in modern racing games.
I dunno about the story modes. I mean, CTR's adventure mode had a lot of things to do and unlock (and hub worlds were extremely cosy), but I don't think that story is necessarily needed. I would just love a game that has a fun, quite open-ended progression (with lots of events to choose, possible upgrades and variations to make races interesting - like mission modes. And lots, LOTS of unlocks). I hope that Team Asobi will cook an Astrobot kart racer. That would be a nice fit!
I mean... old HM games felt more like the town, characters and random events were the center stage. BtN has so many random and character events that it blows my mind to this day! The main problem is that HM games are really easy to "win", as in finding the best money strategy and then... get pretty bored with them. Too bad that BtN is so sloooow.
Pervy games? Excuse me? DOAX games are very wholesome and nice! You choose one girl and then make sure that her stay at the beautiful vacation island is as fun as it can be! And you also get to hang out with Dennis Rodman (R.I.P. king). I got it when it was quite hard to get, before PlayAsia made reprints so I'm quite proud of them! (too bad that if game is thought to be just a bit "racy" you pretty much have to get it through PlayAsia. I STILL don't understand why Little Witch Nobeta wasn't released in other territories in physical form).

@@Hodyna They my have had more time but MK64 always just felt so empty to me. Sure, it was their first MK in 3D but... it lacked in everything for me back in the day already, even moreso nowadays. I would never return to it again because there's just no reason to. While CTR and Diddy Kong Racing offer still so much even to this day! And yeah, snaking was banned between me and friends but online it was... dumb. We gotta get rid of meta gamers who only pick and do the most optimal things... even if it's smart to do so. I HATE FUNKY KONG SO MUCH YOU DUMB APE I WON'T FORGIVE YOU FOR RUINING MK WII ONLINE... Sorry, had to get that out.
I just never vibed with the "boomer" cartoons like the Smurfs, Lucky Luke or Astrerix and Obelix... Not boomer enough to enjoy those, but not young enough anymore to be called a zoomer... Stuck in a hard place!
I mean FF14 has a tons of Chocobo Raising going on, but yeah, having to pay a monthly fee just to keep your Chocobo fresh does not sound fun. (Just like how FF14 is no fun anymore (Wasted WAY too many hours in there))
For me to play a racer it has to be either really cute or it has to be super duper arcade fun, something like Burnout or the Flatout games. So unless Forumla 1 somehow decide to make a racing game with anime girls I would probably never play any of their games, even if it's really fun. Sometimes I just have that stick-up-my-butt attitude where I need a game to look appealing to my eyes. Still gonna check out ModNation Racers and LBP Karting... one day!
No Rubberbanding sounds good to me but sometimes... I really liked it. That thrill of getting punished for the tiniest mistake sucks a lot but can also feel nice. But yeah, if a game can manage to make the AI good enough to give you a challenge without rubberbanding then I would take that any day of the week instead.
Yeah, I don't need a total story mode but just something to do in singleplayer without just having to win all races is good enough for me. That's why the Mission mode in MK DS was so good. Just a bunch of fun challenges to do that weren't just races!
It's mostly the charm of the old HM games I am missing. It has that certain charm in it that eventually was just lost, especially with also the artstyle changes. The new anime style just does fit for me. They should just cater to my tastes and announce an 90s anime styled HM game! I think it would actually be a good idea... I think. Nostalgia is at an all time high after all! At least the cows are still as cute as ever.
I once wanted to buy the Switch version of X3 before it becomes even more expensive but hmmm... I'm not sure if I really wanna spend 80 bucks on that. Maybe the little witch never got a physical release since they thought maybe it wouldn't do too well at first? Till it became kinda one of those indie hits and nowadays they could do one. Hopefully not by going down the dark path with LRG...

@@Vanserchan Nah. I understand you. Meta is EVIL in every game.
I mean... I'm sure that we're close when it comes to age and yet I still liked them! ...maybe because for a long time I didn't have cable TV so these old cartoons were a breath of fresh air and quality.
Eh, the only MMO I ever get into was Ragnarok Online on a pirate server and that's only because my best friend played that and needed someone who would gather materials for h... I mean, played with her. Being a fan of FFs I always wanted to try, especially after seeing that they even introduced boss fight against Eden (and many other OBSCURE things). But then again... MMO for someone who enjoys playing solo aren't all that fun.
Hey! F1 Race Stars has both! ...well... just without anime girls (though they are some OC female racers). BUT! There are super-deformed race drivers! And it has amazing arcade gameplay with fantastic set of tracks. ...but I won't force you. Just saying that it's pretty cool.
I mean... rubberbanding can also work in your favor, no? As the CPU also start to drive slower when you're behind. Wipeout HD was CRUEL when it came to AI. On the highest diffculty they just all ganged up on you and drive nearly perfectly. ...yeah, that platinum is going to be FUN...
I know what you mean. It's... sad how little incentive there is in Mario Karts to finish each cup and CC category. ...but then again... if the game is fun, you'll play it just for sake of it being fun, no?
Isn't that just Rune Factory :V? ...even the newest on and Oceans felt quite animish and had nice characters.
I know that it's often the case, but I don't think so. ...sadly, for whatever reason, some games just don't go physical unless it's in Asia. ...I mean I can just import them but it's annoying.
And come on, you know that X3 (especially scarlet) is worth it!
