  • When the odds are stacked against you, how do you succeed anyway? According to Anthony Trucks - former NFL athlete, American Ninja Warrior, author of “Identity Shift,” and host of the Aww Shift podcast - you can’t overcome your circumstances until you change your identity.
Growing up in foster care, Anthony lived with six different families by the time he was six years old. Statistically, he was more likely to end up homeless or in prison than in the NFL - and certainly, no one expected him to be a published author inspiring thousands on stages around the world. So how did he beat the odds? And, more importantly, how can you?
Watch this #MarieTV now for three simple steps you can use to have an “identify shift” and turn your life around - no matter what.

    3 biggest insights!
    1. Being able to start small and 'sucky' eg. putting out the 90 sec videos even if no one is watching to build that trust, consistency but also hone your own skills.
    2. Falling in love with the day and not just the destination.
    3. Asking 'what would a great xxx do?' then working backwards from that. Becoming that person and letting the actions spring forth from that.
Love this. Thank you Anthony and Marie!

Generally I really love the identity shift idea- we have this in fiction writing as the hero’s journey. When you plan a novel you ideally plan what identity a character currently identifies with, and/or believe themselves to be, based on their wound, and usually it’s something that they can articulate themselves, for example, a princess, the family screw up, etc, and you’ll introduce this in the first chapter of the novel. The hero’s journey is the character challenging that identity in pursuit of a specific want/goal, and in the end, if the story has a happy ending, they’ll end up synthesising who they were with who they now are. In Miss Congeniality she synthesises her tomboyness with a new appreciation for her femininity, rather than staying one of the other.
Michael Hague and Chris Vogler in their audio book ‘The Hero’s two journeys’ have a great tool for planning your characters growth, using this sentence, ‘I would do anything for (want), but don’t ask me to change (what behaviour is related to the identity they’re clinging on to), because that’s just not me.’ In the film Titanic, it’s: ‘I would do anything to have freedom, but don’t ask me to give up the rich guy.’
I would really recommend the book, and exploring the Hero’s journey theory.
My second comment is less positive, in that even though this is a beautiful story of overcoming adversity, but often these inspiring stories aren’t always so inspiring for fellow survivors of adverse experiences. There’s a lot of toxic positivity around this area of ‘post traumatic growth’ that I wish someone wiser than me would talk about. I’m someone that also beat the odds in nearly every area of my life, but live a quiet little unremarkable life, and however much therapy I do and new therapies I continuously chase, many days even just living like a normal person isn’t achievable. We don’t tell stories of normal people who manage to pull together small lives that take courage and constant work. We instead only see people who’ve become famous or become Paralympic athletes, and that’s a shame, because sometimes it makes us feel terrible about ourselves that the only representation we see in the media are either extraordinary people, or criminals! I genuinely paused this video to cry today because I felt like a failure because I’m not extraordinary. Sometimes surviving takes all the work, no matter how much work you put in, and that’s ok, too. I know that this is something I personally need to work through, but after furious googling on the subject of post traumatic growth for any useful actionable information, I’ve found nothing useful beyond this useful tidbit, that traumatic growth is about gratitude for the small pleasures and basic safety in your current life that you understand not to take for granted, because you know what’s it’s like not to have them. If you’ve read all the way through this mini essay, please do let me know if you can relate, and if you know of any good books or resources that talk about post traumatic growth in a way that you’ve found useful. Not ready to give up on this topic yet, but currently feeling that unless you want to be ultra successful, it doesn’t really apply to us regular folk?
