  • As tensions rise and emotions escalate, both socially and individually, it’s tough to figure out how to move forward. There are no easy answers, but that doesn’t change the fact that everyone has to confront the hard questions. Anthony Trucks, a former NFL player who was adopted into a white family as a black youth, has a unique and profound perspective on the crisis that America faces today. On this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu, Anthony Trucks shares his stories of a brutal childhood, a difficult adulthood, and a marriage that he and his wife had to rebuild after her infidelity. As he tells his own story, he offers surprising and insightful commentary on the progress America has to make, and the work each individual has to do to make that progress real.
    SHOW NOTES:
Anthony explains how he remains grateful despite how hard his life has been [1:19]
Anthony describes growing up angry, dispirited and aggressive as a foster kid [3:30]
Anthony talks about how he used “dark energy” on his drive to greatness [6:34]
Tom and Anthony discuss what it means to be “bathed in discomfort” [11:18]
When someone gives you abuse and you don’t accept it, they have to walk off with it [15:33]
What is the value of emotions like anger and even rage? [19:10]
Anthony describes being able to see two sides of white America as a black man [26:08]
Anthony confronts the difficulty of white and black America understanding each other [28:28]
Anthony explains his path to recreating his marriage and forgiving his wife [35:24]
Anthony explains why he stayed in the marriage instead of finding someone new [42:27]
Anthony shares the reasons he has hope for this society [45:27]
Why you shouldn’t rob your kids of their hardships [48:21]
How do you deal with the structure of a society that was built out of oppression? [54:17]
    QUOTES:
“I had 16 fights in 6th grade. I wasn’t allowed to go to summer camp because I was a flight risk.” [4:35]
“We’re going to have to do things we’re not used to doing in order for us to get to the place we want to get to.” [35:20]
“The people who made this system--they’re faceless.” [33:52]

His perspective is so relevant today, there are always going to be people prejudiced against you for one reason or another. Don't use it as an excuse to play the victim. You can't force others to change their behaviour to please you. You've got to do what serves you best.

Excellent interview Tom!!! One thing to remember is the notion that when someone violates trust; it’s never about you, it’s about them. They don’t cheat on you, they cheated on themselves. It’s never personal to you, it’s personal based on their particular history, which is played out in their relationship with you. Compassion, compassion, compassion. Visualizing the goalposts allows for forgiveness and something to strive towards achieving. Blessings 🤗

The focus on the anger to motivate is f’ing brilliant. My whole life I have been told to work on suppressing my anger. Instead using anger to become a higher form of myself makes much more sense. We, as a society, have been told that anger is bad and we should work to be happy. I love this video! Great talk!

@@user-lk1ky1hx5r Not at all! Nothing is the last resort. We are dynamic individuals and all have our path. However, we also have the ability to show up primal. We have anger, happiness, sadness, and many other emotions. My point is simply constructively using the anger to propel yourself forward. As both Tom and Anthony talked about, the chip on your shoulder used to drive you. I have taken too many steps back trying to suppress my anger with how I have been treated. I need to use it instead of it eating me up inside and keeping me from propelling myself forward.

Great interview which covered so much topics. I always like to be reminded that great rewards lie on the other end of discomfort - leaning in to the discomfort and getting used to it - the only way to grow. I am celebrating a year as an entrepreneur after 20 years as an employee and I can honestly feel sometimes sorry for myself for some of the struggles. The cure (works without failing) to kick me out of self pity is listening to Tom and this great guest. As a father of two boys and living in a privileged environment in Madrid, it’s one of my key concerns - how to prepare these great kids for the real world - how to let them figure things out themselves whilst being supportive. Not an easy task but probably the most important one I have. Thank you for the great content - you have given me again great perspectives.

Powerful interview. Tom, I heard you mention the story about the mother telling someone that 'the world doesn't want someone like you to succeed' (something to that affect - around 55 min) here is how I interpret it...That mother could have been right, saying that the average person doesn't expect a kid that comes from poverty or bad neighborhoods to succeed in life, which is ALL the reason why that kid should go for his/her wildest dreams. I teach my children to not accept the world view of what they can do, but to listen to their gut and to let their wants and dream propel them forward. Don't listen to nay Sayers! As you and other successful people have mentioned before, keep you eye on the goal and take steps in the direction of your goal. It doesn't matter how long it takes to get there, just keep on moving in that direction. It is amazing to see how far Anthony Trucks had come. Great attitude and view about life. Thank you for sharing this.

I believe you are right abut this. But this message needs an appendix of a clarification because it applies to us all. The world is a hostile place so we need to work hard to survive mentally and physically.
So for a poor household the message probably needs to be. “” The world doesn’t want someone like you (us) to succeed, so you (we) need to work extra hard to move forward to our success in it. “”
But of course we do not know from this story if the mother was a malignant bitch or a caring mother.
      Cheers.

His story is amazing, salute to dude for overcoming insurmountable odds. What he said about around the 46 minute mark about accountability was legit.
With that being said, some of his commentary reflects that of someone with an uninformed understanding of institutionalized racism and systematic oppression. The idea of a meritocracy alone doesn't work. Also, the people who created, upheld and continue to enforce such oppressive policies have names, titles and faces. So do the people who look the other way. I'd invite him to read and get acquainted with the work of people like Dr. Goff, Dr. Cress and Ta Neishi Coates.

Thats a very interesting perspective and a broad minded one. I think uncontrolled race anger and issue is manipulating people against each other while it would be more productive to work as a collective and overide the ones in charges whose motivation are dictated mostly by greed rather than people's interest. Us fighting against each other serve them and subdue our collective awareness
