@@bookshelfhoney same, I worked with instruments and dancing but never formal singing. However from my own voice it's clear unless you are an amazing voice actor that can sing in different voices, it's hard to change the quality of your own voice. You hear her's especially at end with the country valley girl sound, but the middle all of a sudden looses any hint of her voice quality.
Also, if anyone's interested, the guy that plays Kiwi is Johnny Lewis. He dated Katy Perry for a while and that was her inspiration for the song "Ur So Gay". He later went on to have a traumatic brain injury from a motorcycle accident and ended up murdering a woman who owned the apartments he was staying at. MrBallen does a really good retelling of the story and everyone here should check it out. I can't remember the name of the video but it has Katy Perry's name in the title.
Oh my gosh that sounds so tragic! But for some reason it made me laugh so hard, lol. I'm still recovering from Jaime's rendition of the "famous scene". And I love Mr. Ballen, so I'll have to check it out.

My friends once opened for 3 days grace and instead of watching their set I sat backstage and ate their catering. And that's my 6 degrees of separation between me and Hilary Duff
Hilary Duff and Joel from Good.l Charlotte came to one of our only restaurants in our tiny country southern MD town because GC started in Waldorf, a town 30 mins awau/one county up so people up there know down here and vice versa. I had multiple friends and my BF who worked there at the time the night they came in. That's my 6 degrees of separation to Hilary Duff lol
I like looking at actors from earlier films to see where they’re at. I looked up Kiwi and he passed away from falling off a wall I believe, right after killing his landlady. It took me on a WILD ride 😩
My sister submitted that goof to IMDb many many years ago...as soon as you started questioning how the car crash occured, I started laughing, and then I lost it when you posted the screencap.
This accident is totally possible though. Late at night, drunk guy driving on wrong side of the road. I actually drove on the wrong side of the road like that before. Not because I was drunk though. I moved from Arizona back to NC and the road looked similar and I guess my mind thought of it as the same. There was a median but in NC the median separated opposite flow of traffic but is AZ the road from my house there was a median the separated the frontage road from the main road. I turned onto the road driving in the wrong direction and my brother freaked the hell out. 😂 I pulled over and turned around. Luckily there was no traffic at the time.
Anything’s possible, I once saw a car jump a median cross 3 oncoming lanes of speeding cars and end up in a dealership of brand new Toyota’s. In broad daylight. Luckily he missed every single car, but the light pole stopped him. I’ve even been hit by a car while riding my motorcycle. People can’t drive 🤷🏻♀️
Lol, in all due respect this came out in 2004 when Hillary was still very popular. Loved this movie, yes I cried but then again...I'm an emotional person 😅 Watching this makes me realize how much I was really into Teen Bop Movies. Hillary Duff, Amanda Bynes and Lindsey Lohan movies were pretty much my favorite...and never realized how cheesy they were but that's OK 👍
All the orchestra players watching are absolutely triggered by how that teacher is handling his cello. I physically recoiled when he just DROPPED IT ON THE STAGE
Same! Jazz band trombone here and I was always SO CAUTIOUS about not knocking over the stand up bass behind me. I can’t imagine. That guy totally let go like it’s cool 😳
You are so good.. I wish you would stop thinking about what anonymous commenters think and let your wildness out, free. The scene with the bird, genius.
11:39 my guess for that part is the line was “are you ready for it” and it was signifying the fact the terri was gonna loose her brother and being like are you ready for the loss. is that just me who thought that?
“I’m happy for those people who liked it.” 😂 lowkey the sickest burn in the whole video. JF out here bringing ridiculous amounts of joy by masterfully poking fun just enough. Underrated talent, and comic genius 🙌🏼
22:33 I’m thinking what popular artists there were at the time of the movie came out who could pass as teens and had particularly strong voices and could belt. Mandy Moore and JoJo are the only ones who comes to mind who had similar youth appeal to Hilary. And JoJo’s debut single was not released until the month after they already started filming this movie. I think it’d be a stretch for Jessica Simpson or Christina Aguilera to play teens in 2003, as they were sexed-up pop stars by that point. But I guess they could, since Britney played one in 2003. But Christina was in the middle of her Dirrty Xtina era and would have zero interest in playing a wholesome teen Not really a belter, but Amanda Byrnes has a stronger voice than Hilary did too (see Hairspray) A movie this weak needed an established name to have any chance at turning a profit. A lot of movies like this did. I doubt Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen would have had any success if it did not feature Lindsay Lohan red hot off of Freaky Friday success. And nobody would have watched Crossroads without Britney.
I disagree. I thought he was mostly supportive and stable and chill in What a Girl Wants. I thought his character added to Amanda Bynes self-discovery and story arc. In this movie, his character was kinda boring, one-dimensional, and non-committal ...and I don't really think he moved the story much.
It's super hilarious to me as a musician that the teacher told her that Caro Mio Ben was too advanced, because literal junior high students sing that song. It's the ultimate beginner song.
I even remember when I applied to one of the several music schools in my country, there was this teacher who said: Please, please do not sing Caro Mio Ben for your audition.
I learned recently that the actor who played Kiwi had a psychotic break (likely as a result of a head injury from a motorcycle accident) and killed his landlady, fell from the roof and died. So very tragic.
I was sitting here thinking "I know him from somewhere" so I IMDB'd him and was like "ah yeah, AvP" and then saw he died when he was 28. 😔 Didn't know the story behind it, that's so awful 😔 😔 x
You and Nick are both hilarious in your own ways. I love watching reviews of movies you both did back to back. You and Nick have been my comfort content lately
Everything about this series you do is a masterpiece 😂You’re hilarious, the edits, the random noises, you being edited into the movie, the bloopers, makeup, all of it. I was having a bad day and I’m just cracking uuuuup by myself on my couch now. You don’t know this but we’re best friends
I love Hilary Duff but I agree with you, she's not the greatest vocalist. However, we can all credit her for having a unique sounding voice. You can't really mimic it. When you listen to her songs, you automatically know it's her voice.
Lmao my friend and I bump that song in my car still and she always cracks up because I can “sing like her” and it’s literally me singing in a “head voice” but blocking air from going into my nose and adding the like whiny crackle vocal fry sound lmao it’s fun to mimic but you’re right I haven’t heard anyone be able to 100% replicate her voice
My sister payed cello when we were growing up - I gasped when he dropped the cello. It hurt me. I remember how much that thing cost and how delicately it was treated.
Same here with the dropped cello! My son plays tenor sax and has always looked after it well. He found a bent valve so we took it to get repaired, and the repair guy said “Instruments can get damaged just carrying them around carefully in their cases. You basically have to treat them like a really expensive microscope!” That comment was so weird yet accurate. 😅
I remember watching this movie and getting creeped out how she looks at her brother. I have a brother im close to and we’re close in age but she was hitting on her brother it was WEIRD. Apparently I wasn’t the only one. As a kid I assumed I was the only one who found it creepy but as an adult I’ve heard others say they noticed it too
Me and my younger brother hold hands for about 10 min walking (like how children hold hands) then he farts and u punch him and run away… I’m 28 lmao he’s 25😂💀
Don’t feel bad about pointing out Hilary Duff’s mediocre voice. Her songs were catchy, but I feel like everyone kind of knows she wouldn’t have been much without autotune
I dunno.... I think you really overestimate how much "autotune" they used. Or underestimate how common pitch correction is in music recording in general. I guarantee every recording artist alive rn has used "autotune" I saw her live. She was my first concert. And although it was slightly hard to hear from the MILLIONS OF GIRLS SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER, I think I would've noticed if her singing was that far off
@@FIRING_BLIND yea I agree with you to an extent. I also don't think in the video she is arguing about auto tune. So I don't know why the original comment poster brings that up. The issue though is in these movies, instead of using her voice all the time, they need a better singer to come in and ghost sing for her in few parts. Which brings the question, if her own voice didn't fit all the songs in these movies, why use her in the first place? Honestly it's the whole issue of stupid directors not making sure their movies fit the actors and actresses. She's definitely a good singer, but the run section, nah, I don't think she is that great of a singer to easily pull that off by herself. A lot of her songs are more simple and straightforward.
This was my emotional support movie for a very long time lol I was old enough to know the singing was bad and it was cheesy af, but dammit if it didn't get me through those last couple of high school. Love you H-Duff!
Insider knowledge from literally anyone who's ever been in a choral group: choir directors hate stylized shit like the runs and breathy scooping up to notes in Hillary's busted fake vocal exercise. The only thing he'd have to say would be "okay again, but singing properly." You need to blend in a choir ffs.
Total facts. When I was in middle school my chorus teacher tells us we’re singing Wind Beneath My Wings for a festival. Since it was a popular song at the time most everyone knew it already but ofc we were given sheet music. When we did the first run through we all sang it like Midler. Lol she stops us and says “ok so we will have to go over it first”. A lot of the girls complained because they thought it was “boring” but it turned out beautiful. No riffs just 3 part harmony.
@@nekograce7914 just curious, but how old are you? Bc we did "wind beneath my wings " at our 8th grade graduation. It was also my first year in America and I still didn't really speak much English. But I thought it was the most beautiful song ever 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I was in the ESL class, so obviously we all struggled with the words alone. But I still remember the lyrics and the feeling of that song and my first year in the US.
@@ksy4747 I’m turning 42 in June. It was for my 6th grade October festival (I think) and we sang it at competition. That would have been...1991? Pretty sure. My chorus teachers name was Mrs Crossly and she was intense but and GREAT teacher. She had a beautiful voice. The next year we did ‘From a Distance’. My mom was positive she was a Midler fan. That’s really cool that you sang it for your ESL class(? Am I understanding that correctly?). That’s a great way to teach people pronunciation of a language, though singing. I’m currently learning (or well trying to learn 😂 every day is a struggle) Korean. And trying to sing Kpop songs helps with my pronunciation. And Korean is really hard to pronounce. 🤦🏻♀️ gonna pull my hair out.....

I would never have known haha but I don't know anything about music or singing though
@@bookshelfhoney same, I worked with instruments and dancing but never formal singing. However from my own voice it's clear unless you are an amazing voice actor that can sing in different voices, it's hard to change the quality of your own voice. No matter you sing high or low or smooth, you retain your unique voice quality. You hear her's especially at end with the country valley girl sound, but the middle all of a sudden looses any hint of her voice quality.
@@bunnyrabiYeah she went from her voice to a black woman to her voice again 😂
Also, if anyone's interested, the guy that plays Kiwi is Johnny Lewis. He dated Katy Perry for a while and that was her inspiration for the song "Ur So Gay". He later went on to have a traumatic brain injury from a motorcycle accident and ended up murdering a woman who owned the apartments he was staying at. MrBallen does a really good retelling of the story and everyone here should check it out. I can't remember the name of the video but it has Katy Perry's name in the title.

This accident is totally possible though. Late at night, drunk guy driving on wrong side of the road. I actually drove on the wrong side of the road like that before. Not because I was drunk though. I moved from Arizona back to NC and the road looked similar and I guess my mind thought of it as the same.
But Christina was in the middle of her Dirrty Xtina era and would have zero interest in playing a wholesome teen
Not really a belter, but Amanda Byrnes has a stronger voice than Hilary did too (see Hairspray)
A movie this weak needed an established name to have any chance at turning a profit. A lot of movies like this did. I doubt Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen would have had any success if it did not feature Lindsay Lohan red hot off of Freaky Friday success. And nobody would have watched Crossroads without Britney.
Amanda Bynes: what a girl wants. Jay plays the exact same character in that.
And his hair is soo ugly in this film but better in what a girl wants hehe
I disagree. I thought he was mostly supportive and stable and chill in What a Girl Wants. I thought his character added to Amanda Bynes self-discovery and story arc. In this movie, his character was kinda boring, one-dimensional, and non-committal ...and I don't really think he moved the story much.

Don’t feel bad about pointing out Hilary Duff’s mediocre voice. Her songs were catchy, but I feel like everyone kind of knows she wouldn’t have been much without autotune
These celebrities are hand picked and Hillary Duff is just one example of this
I like Hilary Duff especially now, I didn't care about her voice (it's not great) but she's a good actress and very palatable. I just like her.
I dunno.... I think you really overestimate how much "autotune" they used. Or underestimate how common pitch correction is in music recording in general. I guarantee every recording artist alive rn has used "autotune"
I saw her live.
If it weren't for the popularity of lizzie mcguire i don't think she would make it this far. She was cute as a child/tween actress tho
