  • In today's video I address the topic of faking tourettes and fakeclaiming as whole. I react to Ticsandroses 2 years later after my original ticsandroses video came out. This video showcases my current thoughts about the ticsandroses controversy.

As a girl with Tourette's, I would love to spread awareness and education about my disorder, as I feel it is quite misunderstood in today's society. The media has made it out to be a swearing disorder only, which is far from true. I hope this video will educate you on Tourette Syndrome and tic disorders! Life with Tourettes can be difficult, but just know that we're the same as everyone else...except for the fact we tic like clocks! (:

I think this also raises the question of how much we (audience) are owed by creators. Are we owed someone’s medical history bc we think they’re fake? Do creators owe us proof to confirm their claims? Yes people fake things, but does that mean we can impose on other creators’ privacy?

I feel like if they’re going to sell merch or take money from people in any fashion, then it is fair for people to ask for proof. Just my opinion.

The thing about someone like TicsandRoses is that obviously what they did was incredibly harmful but there’s clearly mental health issues going on too. No one in the right frame of mind would do that.

Yet so many do... So it's very unsettling to think of so many people with so many issues that feel this is ok.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending anyone here, but some people would go the longest of ways to earn money and fame. I'm not saying this is the case because I don't like assumptions, and assuming someone is mentally ill isn't cool either

Yeah I spent several years with then, and they were all over the place with their mind. When we first started dating, she had a fatal heart issue... she didn't die, then all the sudden she would pass out all the time, and had vasovagelsynthapy. (I fucked that word up, sorry I'm an uneducated semiconductor engineer, no an English teacher or MD) I went off to job corps, and when I came home 1.5 years later, all the sudden she didn't pass out anymore. There is a much longer story, but the point of it is, she sadly has always been unstable.

i am in your boat 100%. it really irritates me to see people who aren't disabled try to speak for the disabled community especially when they clearly haven't done their research, in this case the tourettes community. i don't have tourettes but god it's so simple the things that people don't understand about tics in this case - my pediatrician had tourettes and i had no idea she had it until she told me; i saw her for my whole life up until i was 21. so many things can affect someone's tics, and the fact that people believe they can diagnose or undiagnose a stranger from a social media video is completely ridiculous.
this crap ended 3 years ago and as someone who isn't a fan of ticsandroses myself (purely because they seemed to monetize a disorder they didn't seem to have... i think that's the worst they did) people need to stop hammering home these harmful videos.

As someone who twitches and 'tics' because of being Autistic, I get faked claimed constantly. People tell me that I'm faking Tourette's when I don't have Tourette's, and it is so annoying and really mean. It kinda hurts at times, especially on a bad day. I'm not trying to compare my situation with anyone else's with Tourette's, just wanted to share :)

@The_Moth1 Both stims AND tics can present with ASD. Stims are very different than tics, with stims often being quite comforting and soothing. Tics are unwanted and involuntary and are physically discomforting and often painful.
My brother has TS (Dx'd 30 years ago). He tics but doesn't really stim much. I'm ASD and regularly stim and additionally have a few facial tics. I can mostly suppress these tics with some effort, but my brother can immediately recognize when I'm ticcing vs stimming. I find that so interesting and he's always spot on.
Neurodivergence is wild. It's a little different for everyone.

I believe you did your part in calling out Tics and Roses without being dramatic or accusatory. I thought it was decent, civilized and mature, and your point of view as someone with personal knowledge of the subject is relevant. To your comment about what we should stop doing as a society--my opinion is that we need to stop overreacting to perceived 'sins' that don't deserve such extreme threats. It's a symptom of entitlement, self-importance, and jealousy on the bully's part, and really dangerous. If someone reacts that strongly to something that doesn't much change their own day-to-day life, how do they react to a real transgression? We don't all have the right to punish everyone else for their mistakes.

I don't think this is hypocritical of you at all. You've grown and are able to look back at your actions and take accountability for them. It's such a mature thing to do. I want to voice my appreciation to you - it's so nice to see someone able to say, "Yeah, I don't like this person and what they've done, but THIS was not a valid thing to criticize them about." I think it's so important to focus on valid criticisms rather than just throwing everything at someone - even if you wouldn't throw those same things at others. It's important, mature, and gives so much more weight to your words.

You have nothing to apologize for. You handled the Tics and Roses mess (that they made for themselves, if we're being realistic) respectfully from the perspective of someone who actually has the life experience to talk about it, and I think you have every right to call shenanigans on someone whose actions are actively harming the community that you belong to by being a (profiting) powerhouse behind the fake disorder Tik Tok trend.
I have little patience for the disorder-faking community because I feel like a chunk of them are harming my community, too. As a 40-something L in LGBT, I had to spend years wading through homophobia and proving my sexuality as valid to a lot of people who had no right to judge or question me.
I see a disproportionate number of disorder-fakers performing for the camera with rainbow flags and swag in the background, and it really irks me because blatantly faking one part of who you are is going to ruin people's trust that you're anything that you say you are. If people know that you've hitched your wagon to the DID/Tourette's/Autism/ADHD train under false pretenses for attention, what's to stop them from thinking (for good reason) that you're also falsely jumping on the LGBT bandwagon as just another marginalized group that you can glom onto to get attention and feel special? And if that's the case, how long before I, despite being out for 20 years and married to a woman, have to go back to square one to prove that who I am isn't just something I'm making up for attention?
My community fought for decades to prove that being LGBT isn't the result of mental illness or moral depravity. How long before we're pushed backwards to that point again because a chunk of these fakers are acting publicly for attention in ways that demonstrate narcissistic-type mental issues and moral bankruptcy with my community's symbolism as a backdrop?
Like you, I don't think that anyone should get dogpiled with doxxing and death threats for being a fraud, but I also don't think that you need to backpedal and let fakers off the hook for doing something morally reprehensible for clout, all while hurting other people who have an inordinate number of struggles to go through already just to be who they are and live their lives.

but this video was really well done. it's good to look back on previous things you've done and situations you've been in, and being able to interpret them differently than how you originally did.
points you made such as suppressing tics and overall not ticcing for a while could be the case for ticsandroses. the one thing that sold it for me, though, was them disappearing from social media without any explanation (from what i've seen). they had the opportunity to defend themselves or explain their situation, but instead gave room for everyone to speculate. especially with the posts made by their sister and mother on reddit being the closest things we have to having "actual" answers, we will never know their situation or their story.
and to add on to the "looking back" aspect, i don't think you were necessarily hating or judging them. i think you were providing input to the discussion based on your own experience. even then, this is an important situation to have.

I completely agree with this. I believe these days people don't know enough about Tourettes and should be more educated about it. As a girl going through a Tourettes diagnosis I get told a lot by people at school I'm just doing it for attention or I'll be told I'm contagious so they'll get others to stay away from me and it's wrong. Even if ticsandroses faked tics I get people will be mad but the way some people handle it is disgusting. We need more people like you dealing with it as your not being rude or threatening her.

It's sad but it has apparently become the world we live in today, with these two kinds of people attaining prominence in society: those who fake health disorders for attention, and those who are triggered to claim that someone's health disorder is fake... It's honestly a very meaningless situation... Though I guess at the end of the day, one might just have to come to terms with the reality that this is how the world is now, and that if someone absolutely insists being a cynic about tics, there isn't really anything to prove in the end... As they say: "haters gonna hate".

What has happened to Emerald is downright awful, but you weren't the 1st one I saw to call them out and I don't personally blame you for it. But what you are doing here, and now, is an incredible step in the right direction. Unfortunately this is just a trait of internet culture in that anyone worth anything has a voice that can influence us all, and that voice can easily have the most horribly misguided or worse, malicious intent. Before you know it, one voice is hundreds of thousands, crying the same virtiol. T&R is just one example. And while there is so much good that comes of us having this worldwide communication and platform this just... *sucks* . It's taken what cyber bullying used to be percieved as and taken it to an unimaginable level while ironically and tragically enough, people still deny even being a thing. And worst of all, even points that are entirely correct with the best intentions, like calling them out, can easily be agreed with by people you DON'T want to that can and will get spun in a vile manner. Just saying one thing negative about any person belonging to a minority can be unconsentually spearheaded as racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia and the like. But say nothing and you condone and enable harmful behavior. So... what's the lesson here? As pessimistic as it is, we can't win. Or at least I don't know HOW to win. Cause now, and God do I ever hope this isn't what happens to you, backtracking or standing by the person in the spotlight getting pelted with tomatoes will invite you into the same.
But let's ignore all of that and focus on the potential good. Making this video, trying to ring in crowd control and hopefully quiet the negative voices, is so incredibly commendable. It takes a lot to admit you're wrong, or at least that it got out of hand. While you were put in their shoes and I hate that, you learned and gained a tool to use the voice that contributed to what it has become, to quell the hatred. Time will tell which way this goes, but sincerely hope that it's in your favor.
P.S. Daisy deserves the world and I love her

same with the unnoticeable tics too. some of my most common tics are things like blinking and nose twitching. they are extremely unnoticeable especially to someone who doesn’t know what to be looking for. people are always like “oh i don’t even notice you tic” and while i am happy about that, it’s annoying when they turn and use it against you. maybe you don’t notice me tic, but i do. every time.

For someone who has epilepsy I know how it feels for someone to claim they have some medical issues as a joke. I can agree that people have taken this too far.

I don’t see why you would want something like this to be happening to you as I know u don’t rlly like it. I have eczema (I know they aren’t similar at all!! I promise I do!) but there was people in my primary school who just scratched their arms to pretend they have it too and they found it funny when I believed them so I know what it’s like for someone to think it’s ‘fun’ to pretend they have something they don’t xx

I personally don't mind faking as long as its done respectfully to those who actually have it. Like put a disclaimer that you don't actually have it. Try to be educational and informative

No exactly she is terrible to the community but at the same time unless you have Tourette’s or know someone well with Tourette’s you shouldn’t be talking about this or using it to gain money or clout
