    I have of course heard of Magic my whole life (31 y.o. man) and have always been kind of interested but never had any friends who played or had any interest in it and honestly, it seemed intimidating so I never researched it or anything like that.
    Well for some reason lately I have really been wanting to change that because of some silly you tube channels I was somehow recommended and starting watching solely about the value and trading of and collecting of rare MTG cards. So I decided to search for a video to watch on how to play and man, and I am happy you guys had made one. I love Hector!
    Then as the video started (where I am now, so this comment will probably end up getting edited) I am extremely happy to know that everyone here seems new or newbish to the game and that makes me hopeful they will know the right things to ask to have explained as me. Because sometimes when fully enveloped or obsessed people try to teach a topic or game they don't fully understand what needs explained because they can't see how much more knowledge they have over layman's on the topic. That is all, Thank you!

      Welcome to the game! *Magic Arena* is a great way to start, as it provides a low-pressure environment to learn the ropes and experiment at no cost with others. You might also look for your local game store (LGS), if one is in your area, as that's where players will hang out and play in events. Once you're comfortable with the fundamentals, you might consider playing in a sealed or draft event at your LGS, where you can build a deck with sealed booster packs (generally the LGS holds these regularly). This is a good way to gain experience while building a collection (you keep the cards plus any prizes), and you benefit from playing on even ground.
      I'd also highly recommend the _Tolarian Community College_ channel, if you haven't found it yet. It has videos on a variety of topics that can help to improve your skills. Good luck!

      Dan Creamer Exactly!! I have tried playing twice now with my husband who used to play quite a lot as a teenager. Both times it started out fun but his advanced knowledge of the game eventually leads to frustration for him because I’m such a noob. He’ll want to play a full on game and then there we are - he’s totally kicking my butt and flying through moves, using lots of MtG jargon, setting up what seem like elaborate attacks and I have **absolutely** no clue what I’m doing. Eventually I’m just showing him my cards and he’s telling me what to do, and I end up feeling like a total dum-dum and it isn’t fun. It’s refreshing to find a tutorial that really starts at the basics!

      @@fardareismai4495 so true... I'm new to MTG and I've watched a couple of videos, my biggest thing I didn't understand was the numbers next to the elemental Mana and now I know that is any colored Mana. Most of these other abilities I have used playing other tcgs online but this video has sealed the deal for me. Literally went through all of the Magic Cards over the past couple of days and have constructed a deck that will be my best play style, not too shabby I guess. Costed $237 so next pay check I am definitely investing... I guess that's the toughest part of Magic.

      There is the 'Beginning of Combat step - after the Precombat Main Phase before Declare Attackers. Admittedly, that is a step that only really matters to real competitive players.
      While not a missed thing, 5. B. is known as 'Cleanup Step' and also involves discarding to hand size if it comes to that.

    • @DavetheLeg
      @DavetheLeg 6 років тому +3

      Not An Evil Mastermind ya I knew about the "clean up" terminology, but wanted to use terms similar to the video. Thanks for the discard to hand size thing though. I forgot about that.

    • @DavetheLeg
      @DavetheLeg 6 років тому +2

      Not An Evil Mastermind didn't know moving to attack counted as it's own step. Thanks. Are there any cards that depend on that or are affected by it?

    • @NotAnEvilMastermind
      @NotAnEvilMastermind 6 років тому +2

      Not really - mostly just exists as a step during which things can be done, such as being the last chance to crew a vehicle before attacking with it or using an icy manipulator on an opponent's creature to prevent it from being declared an attacker. Most, if not all, of these things can comfortably be done at the end of the precombat main phase.

    • @NotAnEvilMastermind
      @NotAnEvilMastermind 6 років тому +2

      Actually, I remembered another thing right as i posted the previous comment - it's essentially similar to the upkeep step, sometimes things happen. An example of this from M19 would be Aethershield Artificer, who states that 'at the beginning of combat on your turn, target artifact creature you control gains +2/+2 and indestructible'. Hope that helps.

    It seems like they overlooked an important piece of tactical information though. A 1/1 creature can fully block a 4/2 creature's damage to the player's health. She could've blocked the Onakke Ogre with the Merfolk and the Dragon Rider with the Snapping Drake. The Drake would've survived, she could've attacked with it the next turn and stopped his Onakke Ogre from attacking the next turn (with the enchantment). It might be useful to know.

    Takes me way back to the first time I played mtg..on a prerelease alpha deck. We had 4 player games with just 50 cards. Everyone drew from the same deck...we shuffled the discard pile after running out .. when someone died their mana went into the discard pile. After we could buy cards we played multiplayer.with full base decks(no booster yet). One guy bought a palate of legends and held them for 6 months.. he sold them and bought a house.

    Try a duel deck if you want more magic but don’t want to spend a stupid amount of $. I bought the Goblins Merfolk duel deck and it is great. $20 and I can enjoy playing a casual fun game without a massive time, and money investment. I’ll add I did enjoy this nearly practice game of Magic. Becca Scott makes every thing she hosts very charming. I play Magic with the first cd-rom version of the game and have always been able to play a creature with haste once I laid it down. But I looked at the definition anyway to be certain. One source states: Haste is a keyword ability that allows a creature to circumvent summoning sickness. Creatures with haste can attack or use activated abilities with the or. symbol in the activation cost even if they have not been continuously controlled by a player since the beginning of that player's most recent turn.
    So based on that I believe I was correct. The card with haste comes from your hand untapped and can immediately attack. Otherwise it would act the same as any card with summoning sickness, waiting until your next turn.
    Small criticism but Hector became annoying too quickly. Hopped up on coffee who knows but too showy and jokey. I normally like all the guests Becca brings on but you can be humorous without trying to grab the spotlight. If he acted that way on my game night I’d tell him to go sit in the corner. 😄

    You should also mention all the steps of a turn, the simplification is relevant for beginners yes but you should've mentioned it so new players doesn't get confused when someone mentions "upkeep" etc. (Edit: just fixed misspellings)

    A few notes on the Q&A.
    I know you're simplifying for new players, but damage is *not* the same as "reducing" a creature's toughness. This isn't some trivial distinction, every player from hearthstone assumes this, but it matters all the time! For example, it's the premise of the "indestructible" keyword, which comes up about once per set. Damage is just tracked separately, and if that number is at least the creature's toughness, it is destroyed (and goes to the graveyard). Hence, an indestructible creature (which literally just means "cannot be destroyed") shrugs off lethal damage, but it does die to toughness *reduction* to 0.
    Ixalan wasn't a "core set". I know quibbling about terminology is silly, but core sets are products specifically designed ot be more intuitive for new players. M19 is a core set, and is the first core set in several years. Ixalan was just a regular large set.
    Also, this is just personal opinion, there's no right or wrong to play it, but just randomly cracking packs is a sure way to make Magic an unnecessarily expensive hobby. You'll almost never get a relevant card. Buy products that you have a plan to *use*! You can use packs you buy to draft with friends. Or you can buy some of the countless supplemental products that are meant to be played (from the premade decks, planeswalker or challenger, to the special draft formats like Conspiracy). If you get your joy from just cracking open a pack to see what's inside, then that's your choice, but the $4 for the off chance you find something useful is going to become absurdly expensive. if you want to upgrade your deck, buy the cards for it! If you just want a ton of cards to build a deck with, buy bulk cards! (Many competitive players at your local shop will have tons of draft chaff they don't know what to do with. Every few months I give away my extra to kids to frequent the shop). But basically, pick the format and style of play you and your friends want to do, and buy whatever product helps that. The answer is almost never just cracking boosters. (And if you do, at least do some sort of draft with them first!) Make your money go as far as it can. Magic is an absurdly expensive hobby without some care.

    I don’t understand this since there was supposedly a Magic expert nearby. Hector drew a Goblin Motivator on his first turn which has haste. However Becca informs both of them that their cards cannot attack on the turn they are drawn because they have summoning sickness. Not Hector’s! Haste characters have no summoning sickness and can attack when summoned. How was this missed??

    • @ThePrincx
      @ThePrincx 4 роки тому

      I was confused as well...but technically, goblin motivator does not have haste until you tap it. From my understanding...haste is an ability that allows a creature to attack without having to tap a creature. If hector did use this ability..goblin motivator would have already been tapped and therefore can no longer attack but would have haste next turn. At least that is what I think.

    • @ravenwda007
      @ravenwda007 2 роки тому

      Incorrect. Motivator does not have haste. Motivator gives haste to target creature and since it entered the battlefield that turn its ability to give haste to a creature cannot be used because it has summoning sick and cannot be tapped when it enters the battlefield. You will be able to use its ability next turn.
