Finally a true beginners guide that's actually for beginners and doesn't assume any knowledge. Thank you I needed this!
This should be an official MTG guide. Extremely well done.
Man, this guide deserves so many more views
Thanks, hopefully people who need it will find it :)
I agree
It just helped me a ton. I had no knowledge coming into this and this was helpful and patient. Not my first card game but I would've been lost without this
Nah i'm good Me too
sadly people prefer shorter guides :/
I have been playing magic for almost 7 years now and just watched a Beginners Guide for 1 hour straight...actually shows how WELL done this video is.
Good Job! I will recommend this video to any newcomer from now on!
Much love!
Thanks Honeybadger, much appreciated:D
I've been playing for atleast 8, likely 9 years now, and same.
Coming from somebody that just collected magic the cards Who's really refreshing to actually understand what hes saying and then him not automatically breaking to math that would be like me giving somebody directions and then automatically bringing in the song
@@sammywilliam8156 huh? 🤷♂️
Yesterday, my (and my roommates') first decks arrived. One of us already introduced us to many of the rules, and we played all day and night.
We had to google a lot of stuff, some questions being answered, some not.
This video is a great introduction to magic, its ruleset and some basic guidelines. Thank you for posting it, I will surely recommend it to anyone that wants to know more about this game.
This guide is the bomb. No Bs. All great information without any gimmicks. Great job 👍
I need a complete refresher on the overall basics and a bit of advance tips since I have not played this game since 2003. Thank you for this

My man I havent played since the mid 90's!!! 😆😭
Oh man me too

As someone who doesn't feel confident or comfortable enough to play with a group yet because I don't feel like I understand the game enough, thank you for making this. Every other video I found was too truncated and left out important things because they assumed it was common knowledge. I really appreciate the time and detail you put into this. I haven't even finished the video yet, but I'm sitting here with my coffee and a notepad and I already understand so much more than I did when I started, so thank you so much.
Now that I've finished the video, all I can say is that this is the most comprehensive beginner's guide to Magic I've ever seen. I actually feel like I could sit down and play a game without feeling like I'm miles behind everyone else. I cannot thank you enough for making this!
AWESOME GUIDE!! As someone that knew absolutely nothing about Magic the Gathering and wants to get into it because of my girlfriend, this guide made me feel a lot more comfortable with the game and understanding all the rules, steps and flow of a match. I do agree that playing the game will lead to the most experience, but this is a fantastic guide for someone that know nothing about MTG. Thank you for your hard work!!
Youre welcome, good luck in your games!
Back in the old days, unspent mana would just damage you as mana burn. You had to be REALLY precise with your mana tapping if you didn't want to kill yourself by being too greedy. The technology of mana heatsinks has really come a long way!
Came here to relearn MTG after not playing for months because of lockdown and realized im watching my favorite youtuber's video.
While there is definitely a lot to learn here, I am very appreciative and thankful that you produced this very detailed, yet simple, no-nonsense, and easy-to-understand guide for newcomers to this game. I've looked around trying to find guides like this one for other games like YuGiOh, but none of them provided this level of detail to create an easy barrier to entry. Thank you, thank you, thank you! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I just downloaded MtG:Arena, but I plan on getting physical cards to play with my friend who been playing since the beginning. Again, thank you!
Not gonna lie, in my opinion only 1 youtuber is allowed to call his vids a "no-nonsense guide," and thats mrroflwaffles 😂
@@xdHyperz fuck that squeaker
if you also get the physical cards then I highly recommend to play MtGO and not Arena.
One of, if not the, best beginners video for MTG. Taking the time to explain things in depth avoids so much confusion later.
Thank you for this! My boyfriend is a huge MTG nerd and one of my goals was to start learning this year as a surprise! I plan on having him teach me most of it, but wanted to be able to sit down with him and have a basic understanding.
Magic is easy, you lose if you draw to much or to small amount of lands.
4 is a good amount
Which is why I love my black blue red. Constantly drawing and discarding
Two words: Manaless dredge
You ever get caught with those terrible starter decks with huge creatures so you’re forever waiting for enough mana? Yeah..
Hashtag manaweave 😆
I've been playing MtG for years, but I love just listening to you break down the most complicated card game so eloquently.
Thank you so much for this! This has answered so many questions a new player like me has. And I love the time stamps to jump to the section I need when I need it. Very well thought out and explained.
It's an incredibly helpful and thorough guide. Thank you!
I've played a handful of games with my brother and girlfriend and I had my first draft game the other day. This helped a lot because no one explained "the stack" to me. I had a good grasp but this made it super clear and easy to understand
Very useful - best MTG tut I've seen so far. Broke it down to a level that I need for sure.
This is the best magic guide online! Thank you so so much!
Brilliant. About to get started for the first time and I definitely feel less overwhelmed. You have a great way of breaking down such complex concepts.
Thank you, glad i could help :)
Just found your channel a few weeks ago and I’ve been loving the gaming content and commentary. Also recently got into magic - I never expected to find such a detailed and well-structured guide from you as well! You really do it all, thank you.
Thank you so much! This guide has really helped me extremely. It's so good!!!
Thank you for taking the time to make this!!! I genuinely am so appreciative. This video was easy to follow and is just what I needed!
thank you so much! I've been looking everywhere for a detailed explanation like this! now I think I'm ready to meet up with my friend and get my game on! of coarse, after he tells me everything i already know like he does with every game we play xD
This was great! Thanks for all the information, I can’t wait to apply it in game
I'm just starting my journey but this was a fantastic introductory video to the world of Magic. Appreciate the hard work put into compiling this.
Wow, incredibly in-depth! I'm new to Magic and this is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for your effort!
Awesome! Best tutorial I've seen so far. Thanks for taking the time to make this :)
Hi Josh, thank you for this guide. As a totally brand new and later started to MTG, this has help me understand it much more than I would have otherwise. Keep up the great work.
I love this guide. I'm fairly new to MTG and keep coming back to this to dip in on parts that still haven't sunk in yet. Great work!
I know I am just now watching this a year after you uploaded it, but WOW! This is by far the best beginner's guide to MTG that I have seen so far. :) Thank you!! I am brand new to MTG, but I already love it. I am saving this video to watch again soon!
This was extremely well done, thank you very much for sharing.
I’ve read a few articles and watched a few videos about Magic but this explained lots of things much better and in enough detail. Thanks
Extremely helpful, Josh! I just got started with MGT and you have the best beginner's guide video in the entire UA-cam
I truly believe this is the most definitive guide to starting MTG. I've been missing pieces of information from more popular channels (I'm looking at you, Tolarian College), and even MTG Arena itself! This guide is a long one, but it's explained SO well, organised brilliantly, and walking through a game with this in the background would be a PERFECT way to start this game. I love this video, great job!
thank you, I felt a lot of confusion about priority and resolving the stack, well explained!
This is great!! None of the shorter tutorials gave nearly enough detail.
Great guide, Josh, it was very helpful. New to the game and just bought a 2019 Commander deck so I can play with friends.
a very good and detailed guide for beginners, thank you!
Thank you so much mister! I bought my first deck today and this helped a lot with the confusion 😎
This is by far the best instructional video I’ve seen for magic and one of the best I’ve seen for anything. Thank you very much
This - was an *extremely* informative, clear guide! Thanks so much! I've been getting into MTG, and this guide explains everything that I wasn't sure about! :D
You sound so much like Kurzgesagt! Also, this helped a lot, thank you.
Thats high praise indeed!
And im really glad it helped :)
Than you?
Kurzgesagt is so cool!
Being into Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon sure does help with some of this lol
How do you play with Pokémon cards?
Deity Saturn there’s plenty of tutorials out there. Personally I’d recommend trying to computer game version of it as it really helps with understanding how it works

@@marlom7882 Nobody knows. They just throw cards on the table and say they won
This was a fantastic guide, thank you!
I’m just getting into arena and this guide is so much better than any other I’ve found. This game is soooo complicated! Especially coming from a Hearthstone background, a game that is specifically designed to not be complicated like other card games. Thank you! Great work. I wish I could just fast forward to knowing this game inside out!
Thank you for this comprehensive guide!
This was very helpful, thank you! Super easy to follow and understand.
Thank you for this tutorial. I appreciate the big effort put on this. I never played MTG, not really interested in playing to be honest, but I love watching competitive games. I'm trying to get into professional MTG with this tutorial so, again, big thanks!!!
Mr Hayes, this guide has come to me at the time when i just bought the new necrons commander deck, and i am very glad to know you have an actual informative guide.
Thank you for making this! It was really helpful
This is such a good guide! I was persuaded by my partner to get into the game with a starter deck and this answers a lot of my questions
What a fantastic and comprehensive guide for new players. Best out there by a mile.
Subbed you after 9mins. Much appreciation for the clear explanation of a game that thanks to you I'm now better able to enjoy. Definitely going to check out your other vids.
Thank you brother! This helps me understand so much more. It's starting to click now. Now I can play this game with my kids and have it flow correctly. We're going to have so much fun playing "kitchen table magic" with all the old cards I have and building commander decks. Once we can all play this comfortably I'm going to start taking my daughters to the local card shops to play against others. I am excited for them.
Thank you Josh for making this video. I'm trying to learn and this has been a lifesaver. Subscribed 😁
I'm so excited I found this! Thank you so much!
You're welcome, hope it has helped :)
Best guide for a newb EVER! I'm just learning to play, and this helps a lot compared to other 'guides' that are quick, and basically gloss over the rules.
by far the best explained tutorial that i have come across as a beginner to magic...well done
Great guide super helpful for teaching my friends this awesome game!
This is the guide I was looking for. Thank you
Great beginners guide. Thank you. It helped me a lot to get into Magic
Excellent overview of the game. Only thing I would change is using Sol Ring as an example for activated abilities at 52:40 , and talking about how they can be responded to/use the stack.
Even though Sol Ring does have an activated ability, it's also a mana ability and *can't* be responded to and doesn't use the stack.
Thank you so much for this video man! It helps a lot!
Finally an actual, helpful beginners guide! I've watched A LOT of vids for mtg beginners & this isn't the only one thats helped, but its the best one i've seen by far that describes in great depth(👍🏻) how to actually play the game & what its all about. Most just go on & on about the various card types & abilities, assuming you already know the basics, which i didn't, thats why i watched the vids!
Long story short, thanks bro! 👍🏻😁
Thanks mate! This really helped me in getting to know the basics for being a beginner to magic👍
This is the best beginners guide on youtube, thank you so much!
Wow.... gotta love UA-cam. How the hell else are you gonna get a free course on Magic. Thanks so much! I haven't played in over 2 decades and just bought a few sets to play with the kids. You really helped me out!!!
A+ guide. I thank you for your time with this. I love card games but have always been on the fence with Magic. This guide single handedly got me to buy cards. I refer to this video all of the time too!
B-: Saga is an enchantment not separate type
Amazing overview!! Thank you!!
Thank you always been interested because the art work is sooooooo fire/gorgeous to behold 🙏🏾😆
Thank you for this upload...even after all that expirience i had its always good to remember and re-learn basics ;)
I am exploring getting into Magic since my husband loves it. We've played some hobby board games with cards that have similar mechanics like Battle for Hogwarts and I think that is helping me understand this a bit more. Having some deck building like experience from elsewhere may help others learn. Very good job breaking everything down. I still need experience based learning but this seems like a great foundation to start with.
Been a new watcher of Josh, wanted to learn about Magic and found his video. Great work josh
This just might be the greatest/most informational video about MTG for beginners. Tbh anyone could use this guide, very simple to the point and utilizes a great examples.
Thank you! my mom bought me a deck builder bc she thought it was to do magic tricks but I thought I’d give it a try w my friend and it’s so much fun... complex but fun
You have a horible mother but a great friend...
@@user-fe6uq1bl8v Not horrible just silly.
Omg thank you so much, I never understood the game from other videos until I saw this, suddenly everything made since, now that I know how to play, I'll be picking up some cards, thank you for the tutorial 🙂
Very well explained, I was getting confused about not being able to attack opponents creatures because as you explained you can only attack the player and block with a creature. I'm impressed you clearly know your stuff.
Your tutorial is one of the best I have found on UA-cam. I needed to go through basic and advanced rules again since I have not played MTG for a long time. Your video helped me a lot.
Just one thing: From what I read on MTG fandom wiki, a saga is not a card type. It is one of enchantment subtypes.
Thank you so much! This included so much that other beginner guides just either barely touch on or just don't include at all!
check out the MTG Arena iphone/android app!
Best of this type vid I have ever watched. Just sent the link to a friend who started playing recently and has many questions. Thank you!
Thanks Carolyn, hope you and your friend have some great games!
Proper!
Great tutorial.
Concise,streamlined and easy to follow.
Thanks bro!
Superb guide, thank you!
Thank you for making a real beginners guide😩 I appreciate this so much
Amazing beginners guide, thank you!!
Really good video, thanks alot! I play MTGA since two days and this was perfect for me!
Fantastic video. Well done and many thanks.
Damn this was intensely helpful and exactly the kind of guide I was looking for to start getting into Magic. Thank you so much!
This was such a good guide! I feel like i have such a better understanding now. :)
Thank you! That video was a great help for me as a beginner.
Incredibly helpful video, thanks man
Thank you!! This was very helpful! :D
Thank you for very informative guides.
You did it again Josh, great guide. Your Runescape guide also helped me immensely.
This was extremely helpful. I just got two magic decks so my wife and I can learn to play and this makes it a lot more simple to understand, especially since the decks don’t come with rule books lol.
Thanks a bunch!
If the decks came w/ ruleboks, you would need to rent a library.
I just got into MTG Arena and can't wait to go through this guide. Already I know it's gonna be a good one!
This cleared up some misconceptions I had and explained a lot to someone getting back into magic after many years, I figured out some ways I was playing incorrectly in the past
thanks for your video!! im really new to this game but you explained it so nice and allot came clear so thanks again !
