I think something can be said there. When there is less of an ironclad story or narrative that the creators keep trying to lift from and honour, and when they are forced to be creative and come up with their own storylines and character arcs and developments, they can make something totally original and satisfying but still evocative of what we love. Something to be said there.

Resident Evil shouldn’t be this hard to adapt. Just do the mansion incident with Umbrella doing creepy stuff in a lab somewhere else in the background and acting as the exposition dump for the audience. You could even cheap out and not have zombies/ monsters for the first 2/3 of a movie and just have it be Chris’ S.T.A.R.S unit, investigating the mansion, maybe they don’t all get along and the first half of their story is just this group of people having to work together and through their arguments and bickering we learn about each character. Maybe because nothing major has happened yet they agree to split up so they aren’t at each other’s throats all the time and then at one point someone opens a door and we get that classic slow turn where we see a zombie looking back at the camera and from there all hell literally breaks loose and the team HAS to work together to survive.

Basically similar to Alien or Aliens... or even the first predator film... we get to know the characters, we get to see the dynamics in the group, and we get to care about them, and become invested, and then shit hits the fan...
This show, it basically starts of with introducing two characters that are awful people, that have barely any redeeming or likeable attributes, and as i just started watching episode 4... that doesn't change, these characters are just unlikable, and they're supposed to be the people we're rooting for, the people we're supposed to care about...
It fails before it even starts.

In theory Resident Evil should be super easy to make into a show. Pick a classic haunted house scenario, a SWAT team, add some zombies, some hunters, and a zombie dog that jumpscares through a window. That's half a movie already. It's not rocket science.

It's also intriguing how the live action adaptations insist on adding the "apocalypse" element to these stories. The Resident Evil games never had an true apocalypse setting. The 1st 3 games followed the initial event and every game since has followed a main character in an isolated, but still loosely connected bio-terrorism incident. Zombies don't need an apocalypse to be cool.

absolutely. the incidents in most of the resident evil games escalated over time but were still isolated to a specific location. the studios compulsive need to make resident evil like almost every other zombie movie (read: worldwide apocalypse, or at the very least an entire quarantined nation) is ultimately taking away one of the best and most unique aspects of any good resident evil story: the closed circle. a handful of survivors in a place they cant leave dealing with a threat they dont understand.
honestly i dont NEED a resident evil movie because the games are great, but i dont think itd be impossible to adapt. it just needs someone who actually understands and loves the series - not just someone looking to make money off of it.

And honestly with how many outbreaks/incidents there have happened across the main games, spin-offs, animated movies, etc. it’s unrealistic for it to not ever have gone global, it’s only done like that so they can make more games in more locales. What annoys me the most, is when Netflix was first talking about an adaptation series for Resident Evil, it was going to be called Arklay. It was going to follow some detectives investigating weird shit happening out in the forests and mountains around Raccoon City, and was going to culminate in the Mansion incident of Resident Evil 1. That could have been a really cool limited time series (maybe a movie), leaning for more into horror and suspense. But... alas. We got this.

The thing that REALLY baffles me is... It's so easy to get Resident Evil right, yet none of these adaptations can make it work. The elements of Resident Evil are found in some of the most promising types of fiction; an interesting take on the zombie apocalypse, a virus outbreak thriller, zombie-killing and guns blazing action, detective/mystery/investigation into corporate corruption, a squad of soldiers trying to complete their mission but are met with twists and turns, etc.
These are just basic elements that have all proven to work in other franchises on television and in film, yet when combined and funneled through the Resident Evil story, somehow NO ONE can come up with one simple idea; making a faithful adaptation. They always want to change something, they always want to "breathe new life" into the property, they always take liberties, they always change characters or erase them completely, there's legitimately no reason for any of that but they just. keep. doing it.

I personally don't understand why people are just constantly deviating from the games. Like, we got the games they can literally just use. But if they do that, then people will just get mad at just copying the games probably, so, I feel like the people making them are kinda in a no win situation. A continuing problem we're seeing with Hollywood's reticence to make anything new & obsession with adapting and rebooting legacy content is that writers seem to live in this state of humiliated frustration where they have unique ideas they want to develop but are continuously told 'no' by cowardly producers who just want to ape Marvel's success. What seems to be happening is writers are resorting to writing whatever story they wanted to initially and just awkwardly skinning that story with whatever legacy content wrapper they're obligated to. As an example, the Halo TV show writers and show runners literally bragged about never playing the games. Seems the only way to get shows green lit is if they're a part of successful existing IP.

Noah Caldwell-Gervais has a 7 hour long series analysis, and he makes a point about Resident Evil that I, as a longtime fan, always kinda knew but hadn't fully grasped.
There's never a threat of a zombie apocalypse until RE6. Zombies and gross monsters just become weaponized commodities that the world has to bend itself around so it doesn't end. And that in its own way is its own kind of horror. RE6 was the only time the series toyed with an actual zombie apocalypse, and the whole point of the game was making sure it didn't happen.
Resident Evil turns the horror of zombies and monsters into banality for the world at large, which is something no one ever seems to consider. They go straight to apocalypse, or poorly adapting 1-3. No one takes advantage of what is the equivalent of the Banality of Evil, but for horror and zombies, and that's an absolute shame/failure of imagination.

So much diversity in the way you can approach each scenario and the scenarios themselves are interesting like the RCU and Zoo all the way to the Arklay mountains in a rundown hospital. Not to mention it had 4 player coop where everyone can split up to cover more ground or stick together and body zombies. Okay, unpopular opinion - when it came out (that's important for context people) I really enjoyed Operation Racoon City. I liked the idea of getting the perspective of an elite Umbrella special forces team sent in to eliminate key witnesses to the outbreak, and destroy evidence. The game itself did not age well (graphically or mechanically), but that premise would be an easy adaptation into a series I would think. Have a team of Umbrella operatives that you slowly learn more about as they carry out missions within Racoon City. Maybe you see the outbreak itself through surveillance footage that the team needs to recover. Maybe the team gets out in the end, maybe they don't. So much possibility for that kind of show.

And I get that 4 has an insane plot, saving the president's daughter, and she screams alot, and can be annoying, but, despite all that; I love the game, and have played it ever since it first came out on the GCN. Both 2 and 4 are my favorites, but if I could only choose 1, it's still 4. And maybe I'm the only dude here who's favorite RE game is RE4, but, I don't care. Leon's such a cool guy, seeing Ada not being dead, and seeing Wesker too, while the story's crazy, and full of crazy things like a tiny pirate named Salazar, a giant mecha Salazar, which is confusing, but still enjoyably stupid, I also love the unlockable costumes, like the R.P.D. outfit, the 1920's gangster outfit; and even an extra costume that makes Ashley Graham LESS annoying, a suit of armor that literally makes her invincible, unable to be kidnapped by the cult members, or killed; all the collectible things, like the bottle caps, the upgradable guns; the crazy merchant, but; I see why everyone else would pick the OG RE3, and that's cool too. I never had a chance to play it, because I was a kid when RE3 came out, so I had to start with 2 on the n64; and that was enough to get me into the series, playing it with my Dad, playing as Leon, and getting terrified by the zombies, and especially The Licker in the Police Station, and "G", but despite all that, both 2 and 4 will always be my personal favorites. Hell, I mean; I recently got RE4 on the Switch a few months ago, and already beat it again, and I'm thinking about doing a Professional Mode run on it. It's such a great game; but I see why other people prefer 1, 2, or 3, and that's totally understandable. Sorry for the long rambling. It's just, when you love something, saying a few short words isn't always enough; you know? And that's how I feel about the entire series of RE/Biohazard games, that I've played. And I for one, can't wait for the RE4 Remake next year, just saying.

But I agree, RE is a very special franchise, despite all the bad Netflix shows, and horrendous movies that keep getting the message of Resident Evil wrong, EVERY. Single. Have this stuff set before or during the Raccoon City events, could be elsewhere, but it's going on, them trying to escape city, whatever. It blows my mind that in all the RE adapations, none of them have even come close to the adaptation "Success" of the first Silent Hill movie. The first SH wasn't perfect, PH shouldn't have been there. But the setting was good, the world apperance, game characters for the most part were respected. It was clear the Director, who claims to be a mega fan of SH, really is. Where as Paul Anderson some how convinced Hollywood to keep letting him cast his wife in a starring role that had little to do with the series, and the movies were 95% vague similarities or direct references that didn't make sense just "Hey look, it's Nemesis, isn't he cool? Aside of that, wasn't Umbrella evil from the start? Just that they were in shadows for a long time (until their products became popular with the governments around the world).
P.S. I would also like to see a full origin story about Umbrella, but i don't think it's easy to create a show for your random Joe (who doesn't know anything about RE). I think that is the idea the op was going for. We as RE fans would know the outcome, but to new viewers it would be an enthralling introduction and one which could lead into a STARS focused second part. There would likely be some interpersonal drama, but the Mansion could be fleshed out and then altered by all the havoc before Chris, Jill, Wesker, Barry, and a few others (to kill off, of course) get there. So yeah… I’d end it with Code Veronica and have Umbrella’s secrets and the Racoon City incident all come out to the public and then the final couple of episodes would be all original where they use all the survivors from the series and have them go to the last Umbrella lab to kill Wesker.

You don't do a 1:1 recreation you take what works, and make something new. Castlevania shows us this. Sonic shows us this. Arcane shows us this. Detective Pikachu shows us this. Film and TV are VERY different from video games and comics. Film can do things those mediums can't, animation can do things live action can't, video games can do things film/tv can't.

I know no one will ever read this but I'd like to suggest a method of adapting Resident Evil into a television series; Resident Evil is at its best during or in the aftermath of a bioterror attack and the situation is still unpredictable and very dangerous. In light of this, a real-time scenario likened to the show 24 might be ideal for Resident Evil. The first episode is ZERO-hour late evening the attack, where we introduce our smallest group the main story survivors who are our protagonist types, its with this story we find most of our atmosphere and scares for the horror fans.
The B-story survivors, a larger group, possibly held up somewhere holding off an escalating series of attacks all night while waiting for rescue ala the start of RE4, the bar in RErev2, the hospital lobby in RE3make, the gun shop in RE6 etc. So much tension, action and drama could be mined from this scenario the action fans would be sated.
Finally the cut away C-story of intruging survivors with ambiguous alligences who are trying to recover some unmentioned mcguffin, the HUNK, UBS, operation racoon city types, for the fans who know the franchise lore inside and out. I would suggest these parts be filmed in first person to add to the mystery but I know that could cause issues down the line.
When the other stories are busy but time needs to pass, Netflix could include a D-story about Umbrella, Tricell, TerraSave, Wilpharma, the BSAA, FBC, The Connections or the police attempting to investigate and control the situation from outside the quarantine zone.
At the conclusion of the eight hours, the survivors make their escape with an iconic RE helicopter scene as the sun rises and the characters escape.
The next season, we have a completely different bioterror attack somewhere new with a new cast of characters but retain the real time story telling and sparingly bringing over one or two characters from the previous season as new members of the BSAA or something.

As an OG Resident Evil fan, played the 1st Resident Evil game on PlayStation in 1997, fell in love with it instantly, it breaks my heart to see RE get butchered, brought back to life...then tortured slowly to death time and time again in short-sighted attempts to adapt it to movies and TV 👎😭 There's a part of me that has hope that one day, a good adaptation will be made...but that part of me is nearly dead lol. Adapting Resi Evil really isn't that difficult. You could do a pretty faithful adaptation by simply directly filming the game's almost scene for scene with more natural flowing dialogue. This series is yet another example of 'creators' exploiting a brand name and making something that has no real resemblance to that brand (the Rings of Power is another). Remove certain brand identifiers like The Umbrella Corperation, Racoon City, Albert Wesker and this could be any bog standard generic zombie story...... which is why they need the brand name to begin with. I really fail to understand how anyone calls themselves fans of any given lore/universe who then makes so many changes to that universe that it is unrecognisable as the lore it is supposed to represent.

And then they would get criticized for just following the games shot for shot and having no creativity. I mean, Welcome to Raccoon City was the best adaptation we've had yet and people still shit all over it. Given, it was far from perfect, but it was still a competent adaptation and it wasn't all that bad. It's literally a no win situation for anyone trying to adapt it.

    • @necromosisx3590

@@NeuroticWolf13 I disagree, 300, Sin City and Watchmen where all received favourably for the most part. Three films that literally took the comic page and created the live action version. The reason why Welcome to Racoon City was dumped on was because of the poor 'representation' of key characters like Leon and Jill which was due to the current woke M.O. of Hollywood instead of doing justice to the source material. Plus, it may have been the best adaptation to date, but that's a really low bar to hit considering the god awful film series it followed.

All this needed to be was a medical/research ethics drama set around the characters in a corporate lab, with spontaneous violent accident/test subject escapes etc.
And then end of the first season, a whistle-blower gets the word out, T-virus escapes in the lab, carnage ensues... and the call is placed with STARS.
Turns out the lab was the one below the Spencer Mansion.
    Boom.
Also -- WHY do all these writers who are CLEARLY bereft of knowledge of the games go straight to an apocalyptic scenario? It never happened. Umbrella never destroyed the world in official canon. Revelations opens up more in terms of factions and socio-political use of BOWs etc, but the world was never cratered or overrun by zombies. Yet to all these writers who are completely brain-dead, what they assume to be genre conventions means "Oh, zombies. It must be like The Walking Dead, yeah?"
As a working writer, this series boiled my piss. I stuck it out all the way through, and with the exception of episode 7 giving the always awesome Lance Reddick some fun to have on screen, it was an absolute insult through and through.

I'm really under the impression after this that when it comes to video game adaptations, Hollywood is intentionally making bad adaptations and I feel it is two things that kind of becomes one: 1. It's because they look down on the medium. 2. But this would also imply there is a fear behind why they look down on it (which is where my idea is coming from). I'm not sure, but I am under this impression that there is some underlying fear of allowing video game adaptations to grow and become something worthwhile. For all intents and purposes, it is not hard to make a competent Resident Evil movie especially since there have been many Zombie movies that have come before. Hell, the whole first game pretty much can be movie, and not one with a strong budget behind it.

And we’re introduced to our characters which are cops, firefighters, paramedics/hospital staff, and Journalists
And the series would follow them as they cross paths running around the city as each episode gets worse and worse
Like first episode would end with them responding to a “cannibal” mugging, and then end with them barricaded somewhere on their last legs and the missile blows up the city

I know everyone here is in the "just duplicate RE1" camp. I'm a little different - I think you could do something interesting with a slow-burn horror-mystery sort of Resident Evil series. There's something weird going on in these woods, Umbrella's covering something up and only a few cops are really digging for the truth while occasionally encountering horrific and dangerous monsters as they start to realize the true scale of what is afoot. I think that's the genre equivalent of survival horror - slow-building tension mixed with very dangerous action.
The REAL problem seems to be that anyone trying to make an RE thing hears that 2.5 of the ~12 games (2, 3 and 6 for the .5) are large zombie outbreaks and so assume that they can just make any zombie apocalypse story with an evil science corp and slap the name on it. Mass zombie outbreak is the LEAST interesting part of Resident Evil, and it's been utterly done to death in film and TV! Until someone involved in one of these products learns about ANY RE game besides 2, this is just going to keep happening.

    • @shalindelta7

@@shalindelta7 After the first Netflix trailer came out, I sat down and thought about what I'd do if I was assigned to make an RE TV show. I went into way too much detail that I won't share here, but the basic idea was that the mountain town of Arklay is having strange murders, people going nuts and animals mutating and being aggressive. FBI agents Chris and Jill arrive in town and team up with Sheriff Barry, Deputy Leon and later paramedic Rebecca to get to the bottom of things and to find Chris's missing sister Claire, who is trapped in the basement of a large house by a mysterious man and who orders her to take care of a girl named Sherry.
From there it wasn't that hard to work in a fair number of game concepts (Wesker, Mr. X, a big creepy mansion) into the mix fairly naturally. It isn't that hard - the license-holders just don't want to do it.
