The scene where Neo is being informed that he has to make another matrix because the studio mandates it and he doesnt actually have ownership over the ip. That scene literally explains everything exactly as it happened irl
Yeah, literally says "Warner Brothers is making matrix 4 with or without us." Can't think of a more direct explanation straight from director to audience.
@@radicant7283 Yeah exactly, it's like they knew they didn't want to do it but thought alright we'll make one but we're gonna make sure you know that this was a bad idea and we KNOW IT WAS. lol.
What about respecting the audience? People paid real money for this turd. Not cool. The movies got progressively worse and this one was the cherry on top.
isn't a theory. the wachowskis stated prior to the film even starting production that they make a mock parody of their own work in the pitch and the mgmt didnt catch the joke so they just kept running with it
You're actually harping on another point of stuff that was not the writer's fault. The original idea was for humans to be used for their processing power, not their power generation. The studio thought that was too confusing and made them change it. It's literally an example of how the studio has been fucking with this franchise from the very first movie. Which is probably why this time they finally had enough and just decided to troll them and make something that they couldn't continue to make a franchise out of. You literally cited the most famous example I've ever heard of of studio interference making a movie dumber.
@@imissmydeadcat.74 Easily understood when you realize the "writers" you mention, in fact, didn't create or originate this story, which is why you detect parts that need clarification and being further fleshed out ideas.
@@imissmydeadcat.74 in the original script for Matrix 1 people were supposed to be enslaved for processing power, not as batteries. The plot was going to revolve around the machines needing human brains as CPUs. The studio demanded that they change it because they thought the average person in the late 90s wouldn't know what a CPU is. If you look into what the movie was originally supposed to be like it seemed cool before the studio started meddling in it, but I think it still turned out to be an enjoyable action movie.
@@imissmydeadcat.74I thought that they dumbed it down enough already, but apparently, some people still need it to dumber down it even more so they'll understand. 😂 I'm sure that after deciding to put in a scene where it literally gave an explanation for it, they didn't expect that there would people who thinks that the bioelectricity harvested from humans produces more power than a fossil fuel or nuclear power plant. Maybe they shouldn't have had Morpheus hold up a battery in his hand when he explained it to Neo. To be fair, Neo didn't believe it at first either.
I came to this same conclusion after watching it in theaters. It was so bad and so blatantly meta, you felt as if the director was basically saying, "Can you believe this is what they made me create?"
no, that jackass chose to create this. just because there is an explanation why the movie is bad, it is not a justification to make trash and fck with everyone's franchise. you can see how mentally ill you have to be to think like that....
I don't know. I still think they were set out making a serious movie, and went overboard with all the self-jokes and meta points. Besides the above is "just a theory". Another strong theory is that the Wichowski's have lost the plot themselves. Anyone changing their gender identity must be undergoing big mental changes, and there is a certainty that it affects your thinking (ie Creativity, Decision Making, Consistency, etc etc).
So, the studio wants to remake your hit movie from the 90s with or without you. What do you do? A) Turn down the job and let someone else ruin your legacy. B) Accept the job and ruin your own legacy to spite the studio and the audience. C) Accept the job and make a great movie, if you still have the chops. They didn't choose Option C because they didn't have the talent anymore. The Waschowski brothers were a one-hit-wonder. They made one great movie, two lukewarm sequels, chopped their dicks off and then disappeared into the sad world of Hollywood has-beens.
The theory makes perfect sense. In fact when Steven Spielberg made ET he immediately wrote a sequel. It was so awful that it was scrapped right away. It eventually came out that this was done on purpose because Spielbergs contract called for a sequel idea. He did not want this movie to be made so he purposely wrote such a bad story that no producer would green light the idea.
I think there's also many sequels out there where the directors tried to do the same, but then the movie script got made anyway, even though it was horrific.
I think the conflicting view comes from the conflict of what the movie really is. Those expecting a serious sequel to the series are gonna be massively disappointed. But when you realize it's a giant FU to the studio who wanted them to bring back all the characters for a cash grab it's brilliant, as it's just enough to make stupid studio executives think it will be good because it checks off all the boxes and they have no sense of taste so they green light it.
Problem is the studio still wins because audiences paid to watch it expecting a decent Matrix movie. The studio got their money, it's the audience that gets short thrifted
WB wanted to use new characters as the old ones were too old and expensive, and Lana screwed over Smith like WB did her. Fortunately Resurrections could just be a simulation.
Being deliberately shit, doesn't make it good. It makes it shit. And it IS shit. And if you believe it was shit on purpose, you're fooling yourself. They were TRYING to make a good movie. They just failed on an epic scale.
I'm pretty sure that the Matrix trilogy being games was not a studio note - Thomas J Anderson was a corporate programmer drone in the original movie, while Neo was a skilled computer hacker. His ability to see the code and reshape the Matrix around him was tied to his identity as a coder. Turning him into a movie star, or a script-writer or a director would break the basic premise of the entire franchise. Also, having Neo be a programmer explains where Morpheus 2 came from.
Not sure about that, Zak Penn was set to work in some sort of prequel/reboot of the Matrix, it seems he was dropped and then we got only the Matrix resurrections.. but that same year Zak Penn made "Free Guy" about a videogame character that sets himself free, pretty synmilar like the new "morpheus" plotline. It might be just a coincidence.
Uh-huh... If you pay close attention when Ms blue hair is escaping at the start, she slides down the restaurant sign, and it reads, "Anderson's - For people who like to eat shit". Fairly on the nose, isn't it?

I thought the recasting of Smith and Morpheus were a commentary on how studios try to reboot franchises with new actors in old roles, and expect the same performance. They act as if delivery and performance were transactional.
Marvel and Star Wars right now. Like is it seriously that difficult to make new interesting characters? Why bother making another super genius character with a unique personality and morals when you can just make Iron Man 2.0 with boobs, what is going through their heads.

@@PhilipAlexanderHassialis I was more-so referring to the rumor that Harrison Ford didn't wanna do it so he did it bad on purpose so they wouldn't use it, and yet they kept it in anyway
That’s not even a theory. That’s just literally the A plot of the movie. The first half is the actual movie was a brilliant short film about the author’s struggle with mental health and the way the first movie ruined their life. The second half just goes here’s some big dome action for the people who couldn’t keep up. Then it proceeds to close every door and burn every bridge so they can’t pull this shit again.
It’s like how the second half of Adaptation was written by Kaufman’s brother and nobody got it, it was intentionally a cheesy action film at the end about a crime heist. The brother spells it out beat for beat and people still didn’t get it. Tho that movie was brilliant and wasn’t meant to bankrupt a franchise…LOL
I watched this movie when it dropped on HBO and was very confused up until the Warner Bros name drop. After that scene I enjoyed the movie purely based off of the meta content and how badly it recreated the first movie, which clearly was an allegory for how cool firing guns in slow motion is.
Neo the games designer was literally told, ‘you make us a new game, or we’ll do it for you.’ as soon as they said that, it clicked for me. 🙌 to the Wachowskis
When I saw it in the theatre, groups were walking out in the middle. Soon after, during a long dialogue moment, I broke down and started laughing… for no reason other than the boring factor. Others joined me. It was a crazy moment that I’ll never forget. I don’t remember the movie at all.
It was a dogshit movie that I could write essays on. For starters it's fucking criminal that it didn't get a Premium Large Format release, nevermind the fact that matrix 4 wasn't in 4d. The budget? Omfg where did it go??? Last I checked it had double the budget of Titanic. The core principles and ideology? Completely abandoned. There was one singular cool moment in the movie and it was the reveal of Io/new Zion. Apart from that it legit felt like a made for TV remake in the same vein as the Rush Hour TV show. I believe it was bad on purpose, but not to stick it to the studio. It was bad on purpose to shit on all the people who loved the movie, to spite the fans - because the creators hate the fact that their best work was something they stole. Its crazy the movie was so bad it made me question everything, which lead me to find out the wachowskis were sued and lost in court over IP theft. The Matrix was heaaaavily lifted from The Invisibles.
You realize there was a girl with a rabbit tattoo in the first movie? The _reference_ was to the tattoo in the first movie. If that weren't the case, your idea would be more plausible.
In the original the white rabbit tattoo was a thematic reference to Alice in Wonderland. They replaced it with an insincere nostalgic reference and brand tie-in in a way that looks good on paper but is just cringe in context. One of my favorite moments from the movie
This is my head-cannon now. It was a meta commentary that new IP is almost non-existent in Hollywood now, I went to see Deadpool and Wolverine at the cinema a couple of weeks ago and not one single trailer shown before the film started was for an original IP, it was all sequels, prequels and reboots of old IP! We are living in a remix, it's almost the same with music, just to make us all feel old, our 90's and early 2000's music is all being sampled by modern pop stars! Showbusiness has become the Entertainment Industry, there is a subtle but discernible difference: The former is a show, a spectacle, a novel experience that may or may not make money, the later is mass produced nonsense that has been produced solely for the purpose of making money from people who want a show but never truly get one.
my father was saying the same shit in the 80s/90s when everything was a remake of something done in the 50s/60s. whether it be from a episode of twilight zone, dark shadows or a direct remake. the pattern will always continue. the trend of re-imagining art in all forms will always continue. Some gems will pop up here and there in between but they too will also be filled with stolen/borrowed elements from something done before (Tarantino). Re-makes aint a bad thing if they actually re-imagine it. Tarantino is a great example of this. He steals from many great films made before he was a twinkle in his fathers eye and you would never be able to tell. Every great artist stole from another artist. what direction they took it in was what made it special. everything we have ever done as a species was done off of the progress of what was accomplished before us. the 4th matrix was lazy as shit though. i watched it 4 times and still dont remember seeing it. thats a example of how not to do it
I literally went from straight confusion as to what I had just seen with The Matrix Resurrections to laughing hysterically for twenty minutes straight. I honestly couldn’t believe what I’d just seen.
"I literally went from straight confusion as to what I had just seen with The Matrix Resurrections to laughing hysterically for twenty minutes straight. I honestly couldn’t believe what I’d just seen." Huh? How does this apply to this film? When did you laugh?
That was the same thing Douglas Adams did with Earth: Mostly Harmless when fans demanded another Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy book, although it was more the ending that.made it so there really couldn't be another one...
@@michaelbashford2733 Douglas was going to fix Hitchhikers with another book (apparently he eventually felt bad about it) plus the movies were going to be different too, but then he died and we're stuck with it. I don't think it's impossible to make another good Matrix based movie, but it's not very likely either. From what I read, someone wanted to make a movie in the Matrix universe, but not about the main characters, asked for permission and then we got Matrix 4 instead. Whatever it was, it couldn't possibly have been as bad....
"Morpheus" in this movie is actually an (in universe) AI recreation of the real Morpheus (who is dead) so that's another layer of meta-commentary on how being dead won't stop you from being dragged out like an old rug (cough star wars cgi cameos cough hack wheeze)
Worst part is, those who watch the movie only knowing of the 3 previous ones will not understand why Morpheus never returns. It's because he dies attempting to bring Neo back by uncovering the location of the RSIFragments with codebombs being assassinated in the process. No one will know that unless they've played the MMO The Matrix Online, and what's worse is that the storylines within that game are canon.
I could tell while watching that they made it bad on purpose. It was more like, “fine, we will take the money, but you won’t like it.” Lol also, I could tell from the trailers that it was a rehash of the first. I’m just glad I didn’t pay the theater price to see this. I really appreciate all the research you put into this. So good.
Absolutely. The scene with the CEO was an actual conversation, I found out. Abridged, but the same energy. Basically, "We're doing it with or without you" "If you're going to ruin it anyway, I'm going to ruin it MY WAY." I have nothing but respect for that decision.
I like the scene where fake Morpheus, dressed as an agent, got high on drugs, popped out of nowhere in front of other agents, greets an agent with: ''Agent White.'', and bursts out laughing for no apparent reason. I couldn't stop laughing at how hilarious that scene was. At this point, I was like: ''What in the fuck am I watching?''.
Lol shit was a comedy show but you gota admit the comedy parts really did hit. The part where Neo tried to fly and was like "Yup that's not happening" I literally died of laughter lol

Same happened with terminator. I remember Arnold talking to the actres of sarah connor on the phone and he said "just take the money and forget about the movie"
Which would have been fine, except Jimmy Cameron also hopped on to Dark Fate's press junkets to tell us all that actually this is a good film with artistic integrity and he would only say it if he believed it. Lol sure Jimmy sure
Me too. I forgot this movie as soon as it was over. And I checked out half way through and had to force myself to suffer through to the end. If they want more matrix, fine make more. About new stories and characters. Animatrix is pretty good without rehashing the same old story.
Did you know that the first version of the new Matrix movie was designed to be perfect? Where none suffered, where everyone would be happy. It was a disaster. No one would accept it. Entire crops were lost. Which is why the new Matrix movie was redesigned to this!

I think the Wachowskis simply had nothing left to say. I don't think there's much depth to the bad film. I've seen commentary where people thought Lana wanted to protect her characters, by accepting against her will to direct a sequel to the trilogy because the studio would have done it anyway without her - but having watched the film, does it LOOK like she is protecting any Matrix lore? This movie ironically likely would have been better with another director anyway.
Spot on, anyone defending this is coping. Their argument essentially boils down to, Lana didn’t WB to make a bad matrix movie so she made one for them. Bravo!
I dont think it was a question of whether the film would have been better or worse with another director. I think that Lana did not want ANY sequel to be made to the trilogy as it would take away and diminish the originals. To Lana the story was done, nothing more to be said, but Hollywood is stuck in the world of sequels. This was the way to keep from an endless line of spinoffs from being made
Dude, the movie was meant to be shit exactly because of the reasons they made in the movie. Warner Bros broke their contract and forced them to make another movie. So they trolled Warner Bros and made a Meta Meta Meta movie about being forced to make another Matrix Movie. It's all right there. God bless Lana.

I agree, as far as the corporate greed part goes, it's an interesting "meta" take on it. How many movies are poking fun at the very studio that's responsible for its creation? Plus, although I'm a huge Matrix fan, I felt like the series started jumping the shark midway through Reloaded. The series was already getting bogged down in commercial appeal, actiony "rule of cool" more than intrigue. The Animatrix had fresher ideas than anything in the last half of the trilogy. The Wachowskis were clearly running out of steam by the end. The franchise was already getting "milked" by that point. And Matrix 4 came out at a time when we'd already had so many half-hearted reboots and remakes.

it's honestly not even a theory . Lana has said in multiple interviews where she said that WB contact her and her sister to tell them that they would make a reboot/sequel and revive the IP, regardless if anyone of them wanted to or not. Lana took the opportunity to do the funniest thing possible :D
I was an extra on set of the gym, during the gym bits in the pitch meeting, and I'm back there behind Keanu. Oddly enough, that part of the scene was actually filmed in a real San Francisco gym, that they obviously had to have paid a lot to rent out for the day. Don't think they even changed the layout of the aerobic machines, just made sure we were in exercise clothes, covered my arm tattoo with a crappy hoodie from wardrobe, and shot a bunch of takes. One whole scenario we did clearly hit the cutting room floor, and it was the later stuff that made it in. ANYWAY, you totally reminded me of that with your Lana and Hugo call bit. Hilarious that one of the few real things in the movie was just a gym that's shown for mere fleeting seconds. Great essay, by the way. Totally on board with your observations and theory.
I like to believe Lana and Hugo are friends, so actually she called him like: "Some WB execs are gonna call you to work on a Matrix movie. Just say you're busy!"
My hope is that the movie was made bad so that it's the last Matrix movie to be made for a long time (Protecting some good art from the multiverse mash machine). It's like a disruptive EMP wave shutting down all threats in the area, but sacrificing its own power to do so.
You know WB is still gonna let the matrix sit for a while before they destroy its corpse and make another movie without the wachowskis, probably a reboot.
The real 5D chess move would have been to start Thomas Anderson in the same place, but never give the revelation that the matrix is real. The film is a psychodrama about a mentally ill artist, and his friends, family and doctors trying desperately to keep him sane, while the vultures at Warner Bros push him further and further into madness, not just with deadline pressure, but actively gaslighting him, precisely because they think he'll make more interesting work if he's unhinged and if he winds up unaliving himself, they can make big money on a re-release as a "tribute".
The issue with this is that if it was the whole movie it would have never been greenlighted by the studios. And so Lana would have been fired from the project and we would have had a movie even more barebones than this one. Not saying that it's not a good idea tho, I would have loved a whole movie with just the plot of the first half.
From the first watching of the movie I had this epifany theory here - without some behind the scenes information you gave. So glad you put this on video, I believe strongly we are correct in our assumptions! 🙂
What shocks me the most about Matrix 4 is that the WB execs didn't see this flaming pile of garbage coming from a mile away. The whole film is Lana giving WB the middle finger and (rightfully) killing off any potential reboot of the franchise, but over the months and years that it was in production, they continued to fund it and somehow didn't know that it was going to turn out so awful???
Capitalism is always willing to make money off media calling out capitalism for being evil. This is just a variant of that. They don't care whether it's good or bad, just whether they can get people to watch something off the (still very strong) brand recognition. That's it.
It makes much more sense when you realise that studio execs do not care at all if their movies are good. I recall an anecdote about Alien 3, where David Fincher was at his wits end trying to convince the studio execs that the changes that they were insisting on would hurt the film, and they responded that they didn't care. They didn't give a shit that they were hurting the fim, because a good film is never their goal, only a profitable one. Great films bomb all the time, and terrible ones routinely make bank. I imagine Warner Bros thought that the brand recognition and attached talent would be enough for this film.
@daniellegales I thought that Matrix 4 completely bombed though? Which is why I'm especially confused that there are now plans to continue the series with a new director. From a marketing and profitability standpoint, I'm baffled.
My Favorite part of the movie was when Neo went to the game awards and had to take pictures with the anthropomorphic Gillete shaver and then was hit on by Geoff Keighley.
I believe your theory 100%. I believed it while I first watched it that scene really stuck out to me and while watching the movie I couldn’t help but think about why it was the way it was.
During the first 20 to 30 minutes of this movie I was mesmerized completely convinced it was a *prequel* to the original trilogy. I imagined the matrix was unintentionally created by Neo as a consequence of the AI he created for the games. I imagined Neo uploaded his consciousness to the matrix and that he, as the creator, had admin / world building privileges. I imagined he created the allies and the villains in this world taking people from his own life (including Trinity). I imagined the matrix had to stop Neo for some reason but it couldn't take any of his privileges, so it made him forget everything instead. And I imagined Morpheus was the first consciousness to emerge from this AI and that he would start a friendship with Neo that would lead to the never ending loop that eventually brought us to the original trilogy. It was an amazing movie in my head for a little while. Until it wasn't.
I had the same idea while watching it. I thought "huh, maybe it WAS all a simulation in some guy's computer who turns out to be Neo" but actually it just turned out to be a bunch of slop.
When I left the theatre my first thought was I bet Lana was told either you do another matrix or we will get someone else to make it for us and she was like fuck it Ill make one so bad no one will want to see another matrix ever
Hi. Just wanna add something to your theory that you made, Just a little fun fact. I believe that the Matrix being a game instead of a movie was because Warner Brothers was doing a deal with Epic Games, to show how powerful and realistic Unreal Engine 5 is. I say this is because there is an official Matrix tech demo to show how realistic and cool it looks, and it was released after The Game Awards. It's called "The Matrix Awaken." It's funny that it was quickly forgotten. But here I am today, learning that the disposable tech demo held significance for the plot of the film. Just wanna ring that into the table.
I came away from the theater immediately thinking the same thing that you did, that wachowski deliberately killed this movie. The only thing I don't understand is why Keanu was willing to be a part of it
I was thinking that before I even reached the theater. I knew that both Wachowski's hated the idea of a new sequel as the story is complete, and the "Warner Bros is making this with or without you" line was in the trailer, so it was obvious that this movie was made out of spite. This theory is barely a theory, it had might as well be a fact
Because: 1. He's a nice guy. 2. They need the big names. 3. He was riding the sequel train already. 4. It's funny (only way to get NPH on board btw, he makes a fantastic villain.) 6. Money (even though he spends it generously, I would imagine he enjoys being generous.)
The band that performed it is called brass against . Around the time the movie released the lead singer got notorious because, now follow me, during a gig, she announced in stage she needs to pee, a fan came up on stage and offered to be peed on. To which the singer obliged. The fan ( a large white, bearded middle aged rocker type) triumphantly raised both fists in victory. I think the video is on youtube or at least the less respectable video sharing sites.
Girl has a Bugs Bunny tattoo... showing how unserious this movie is, compared to the original, where Neo discovers the Matrix by following a girl (the lively Ada Nicodemou) with a White Rabbit tattoo.
Bugs indeed sports a tattoo that serves as a visual homage to Bugs Bunny, the iconic cartoon character. This choice is deeply intentional, reflecting both her namesake and the spirit of her character. Bugs Bunny is known for his cleverness, wit, and ability to outsmart his adversaries, traits that Bugs in the film embodies as she navigates the complex realities of the Matrix. Additionally, the reference to Bugs Bunny plays into the larger tradition within the Matrix franchise of using names and symbols that carry deeper meanings and connections to cultural touchstones. Her character, much like her animated counterpart, is resourceful, rebellious, and plays a critical role in challenging the status quo within the Matrix, making the tattoo a fitting symbol of her identity and role within the narrative

Isn't this theory though potentially giving her too much credit? What if a grief stricken Lana just wrote a bad movie and so they made a bad movie especially during COVID?
The current theory (on Matrix Explained) is that humans are kept as slaves to provide training data for LLMs, which are constantly hungry for novel input. This is seriously the most believable explanation I've encountered.

I think people stopping at it being a big FU to WB are missing the fact that it’s a genuinely apt commentary on the general culture of simulacra and repetition. The movie reframes this modern phenomena as almost like the actual spiritual encroachment of the Matrix into our world through the fourth wall.
Don't think it was so bad,Smith still has power too,it's just residuals probably from absorbing the oracle.Maybe this is why he could move in the new architects time freeze.
because the mass population is so stupid... they keep going to watch them... even out of curiosity... even if they know reboot or remake or sequel will be probably shit .... and studios think wow this movie was net profit... lets remake some other 100 movies... thats why.... stop going to watch trash, if they start bleeding money... they will start thinking of quality maybe again .....
They literally tell you why in the movie 😂 ITS A CASH GRAB most studios make bad films hoping to make a quick buck which in it self makes no sense and in most cases they have contracts where they have to use existing IP or they lose the rights which is why most bad movies are made
One other factor that you do not mention is that the film was shot post-quarantine with a ton of restrictions and, apparently if rumors were to be believed, a very tight schedule imposed by the studio. I'm pretty sure even if Lana wanted to make the action cool at some point she said "You know what, fuck it, Keanu, just do the force throw a bunch of times". Plus Keanu isn't doing any physically taxing stuff so he won't injure himself by the time Lana's good friend Chad starts filming the next John Wick
@@jonvangilder4861 This is true. They actually filmed some of the movie on the street where I worked and I walked out into a scene mid shoot on my way to work because they blocked off the entrance to the office building I worked at. Their security got upset, but f*ck em, my pay check was more important to me than this movie ever was, lol. Also another interesting trivia, they had the cops round up and quarantine the homeless people that normally roamed that area into an alleway about 2 blocks north of where they filmed at, then paid extras to dress up as homeless people, smh...
From what I heard about the Wachowski's in reality, was that Lana and Lily suffered the loss of a family member, and Lily wanted to wait, grieve and take some time away, and Lana decided that her way of coping with the loss was to go full-speed ahead with the production. I get it, the movie could have also been forced onto a deadline, because it was also said that Keanu was already super-excited and ready for the sequel. If we add in what was said about Warner Bros making them produce a new sequel on a schedule, Lana still probably went with the idea of taking jabs at the company in the production of this film because maybe there was some insensitivity from WB about what Lana and Lily went through when losing a family member.
On a meta level this movie is a riot, it gets better the less you think of it as a matrix movie You have to question if the Wachowskis really are such good directors when only their first film is considered good. Their ideas are fantastic, but it seems like they need a good team to flesh out the ideas into a complete 'cinema experience'.
They're horrible, the matrix was good because of the amazing team working on it. They took all the credit, every other movie they ever made from Jupiter ascending to others have all bombed even their shows lol
The ultimate meta is that this film is self aware to the point is highlights the importance of all film's value coming from meaning and intentions which was the trilogies greatest strength. The film makes fun of pointless sequels by removing this, highlighting what made the originals so good by reminding us about the first one and showing us how empty a film looks without purpose. At the same time doing her best to end it....genius! Great video. It was the first time I tool beers to the cinema because knew it was going be terrible before hearing anything about it.
Reloaded and Revolutions weren't great honestly. They had something to say, but were rather ham-fisted and (somewhat) badly executed. They had their good points, and had something to say, but they weren't as tight as the original. At the time, I was always hoping they'd uncover the Real World as just another layer to the Simulation, and that Neo was really just another program to control the masses (leading to real character growth from Morpheus to realize that following prophecies are BS). I mean, think about it: everyone wants to believe they're "special", that they're in on some grand conspiracy. "The Real World" should exist as another layer of The Matrix for those who hate conformity. Give them some dreary existence outside of The Matrix and they'll believe the oppression MUST be the reality.
You mean the Matrix online was canon. I think they made it a video game so the executives wouldn't figure it out personally. It's too obvious if it's a film
Neo does use the "Force Blast HaDouKen" move in the original trilogy. He used it once, to stop the sentinel in the real world, demonstrating his powers were not confined to the Matrix.
There is somewhere where it was explained as him just jumping really far, might have been matrix online where Jump was the biggest method of traveling around rooftops
Having a prison cell with a balcony reminds me of the prison cells in The Eerie from Game of Thrones, the sky cells. Just giving you the option. Except the sky cells had an entire wall missing instead of a balcony. And i think they also had angled floors, so you couldn't even sleep without the fear of rolling off
It's not a dedicated prison cell, just some place they stuck Neo in until they figured out what to do next. He's basically under house arrest in a hotel room.
No matter the actual meta intent it's kinda shitty to put so many resources and hard work to something you're actually trying to make bad. With the amount of creative freedom there still would have been the possibility to do all this meta commentary but also make something that's still actually good on its own terms.
The whole thing about the original Matrix being a video game was to deceive the characters themselves. Wiping their memories completely would have only set off a whole another Rebellion inevitably. But whipping some memories and leaving False memories of around the truth along with a different identity helps keep them where the Matrix wants them. Still being drained any used by robots in the real world
in my opinion The Matrix was the best movie ever made for a decade and then they decided to stop fans from asking for more by making one of the worst big budget movies ever made
My end take away, I liked it BECAUSE of what it did to give the middle finger to the RIGHT PEOPLE for a change. For the hardcore Matrix fans there were pieces that stayed true, and actually fit as a continuation which I'm sure HAD to be done in order to justify bringing Neo and Trinity back, like pulling from the concept of Neo being able to imprint without actually bringing it up to insult the intelligence of the fans, it also did not reference the Matrix online while still allowing it to fit the canon. I give it style points for succeeding in literally everything it intended to do. She didn't shit on the fans of the OT, she gave a plausible continuation while successfully slamming the door in the faces of WB and their hopes of milking the Hell out of the franchise. It DOES SUCK that it had to be done that way, but I appreciate rather seeing it at the bottom of the ocean rather than in the hands of pirates.
Your theory feels right to me, in fact I enjoyed the film for exactly the same reasons you suggest Lana might have made it for - a good high school reunions vibes things - supposing your high school was actually fantastic. (I guess, I am too awkward to enjoy any such reunion and my high school years were peak social anxiety.)

The fact that the original story in the movie is turned into a videogame is actually another hefty piece of evidence in your theory. You see, The Wachowskis HATED Path of Neo. They hated it and actually made a joke in the game itself as you reached the end where they completely altered the story of the film so that the player could face a 100 foot tall version of Agent Smith comprised of all the Agent Smiths in what was the worst call for a video game since the SNES turned Darth Vader into a giant scorpion to fight. This is their meta message, that is why Neo resents that the machines turned his life into a meaningless videogame. So in A way they actually were referencing the Path of Neo without being too on the nose about it because it was, after all, designed to be A middle finger to Hollywood and WB in particular.
Admittedly, had a lot more fun with Path of Neo by comparison since it still felt like they enjoyed it to some degree. Straight up putting a bamboo forest fight in homage to sword flicks for one thing at least means they were able to show that fun better, even if it may have been under protest. Hey, I admire Path of Neo in that regard that they were essentially just remaking the series with less self importance and more just being dumb fun and throwing whatever ideas they wanted at the time. As opposed to Resurrections where it's half the creative team, nowhere near the budget or choreography and even it's small bits like Neo and Trinity having more human conversations and feelings that are nice don't really elevate it a way that still makes me confused if this was supposed to be a success for trolling or a failure for not even trying....I suppose it'll just have to be up to the individual if it works, but it doesn't for me.
@@BlondeManNoName Oh they were involved, before the final boss fight they even cut in with a filmed explanation of what was about to be different from how things went in the movie.....And then the game did the worst thing since Darth Vader turning into a scorpion in the old Super Nintendo version of Star Wars. They are Star Wars fans, so I would venture to say they knew about people's reactions to it. I think that was giving WB the finger for forcing a Neo game. Enter The Matrix allowed them to expand on the story of the films themselves, Path of Neo just FELT like it was made because of interest in playing with Neo's powers. It didn't offer anything terribly new to The Matrix universe and when you think of how deep rooted in philosophy that Neo's story was, it meant something to them. I really think THEY never intended for Neo's story to be some quick cash grab videogame throw away.
i went into this movie with no expectations other than to see where they would take the lore and i was pleasantly surprised, then i looked deeper into what the movie was saying and i must admit it is extremely clever and meta which is kinda what the 1st movie was so i dont know in my books its actually a very good movie almost perfect.
Only reason it doesn't hold up to the first one is that the first movie (and to a degree the rest of them) broke the meta *and* were good movies in general, that still hold up to this day. This one stinks even if you susbend disbelief/inhale liquid shit beforehand/sacrifice to satan etc. It makes you cringe, and is inherently not a good Matrix movie. But as a blockbuster shitpost, this one takes the spot, and probably will for a long time.
I remember reading no one actually wanted to make a matrix sequel except Warner bros, and were going to make it regardless on if they were going to participate, and Lana was wanting to still oversee it to make sure another doesn't get made

I'm sure that after deciding to put in a scene where it literally gave an explanation for it, they didn't expect that there would people who thinks that the bioelectricity harvested from humans produces more power than a fossil fuel or nuclear power plant.
This honestly speaks to a profound level of integrity.

Matrix 5 should have Steven Seagal as Neo.
That would be epic
I would see it, that sounds hilarious IF AND ONLY IF he thinks it's a serious movie

I don’t think the Hobbit film was so bad. Overblown and enormously long for no reason - true. But ultimately the main screenplay is directly based on the book and it’s quite entertaining and passes the spirit of that fairy tale pretty fine. My kid enjoyed it.

I was an extra on set of the gym, during the gym bits in the pitch meeting, and I'm back there behind Keanu. Unfortunately you are wrong, since the director was the one that wanted to do the film not the studio..
They don't care. It will make money anyway because it has the matrix IP. Also muh chinese markets.
To make it funny, the Matrix 5 is now in production with a new director lol
My Favorite part of the movie was when Neo went to the game awards and had to take pictures with the anthropomorphic Gillete shaver and then was hit on by Geoff Keighley.
Once you started on your theory, I agreed.... not shocked at all :).
Great video :)
That's more imagination than the movie actually had - kudos to you!

It's called "The Matrix Awaken."
It's funny that it was quickly forgotten.
Keanu was also apart of Cyberpunk 2077 launch so..

Keanu got paid $12 to $14 million upfront for Resurrections. Easier money than most people will ever make.

2. They need the big names.
3. He was riding the sequel train already.

On a meta level this movie is a riot, it gets better the less you think of it as a matrix movie

@@richardblack3385
Speed Racer is amazing
@@richardblack3385sense8, V for Vendetta and Speed Racer are fantastic, what are you on
The ultimate meta is that this film is self aware to the point is highlights the importance of all film's value coming from meaning and intentions which was the trilogies greatest strength.
They made it a videogame because the videogames were canon sequels to the end of the trilogy
It also makes the PS2 cgi in Matrix reloaded make sense.
😂
You mean the Matrix online was canon. I think they made it a video game so the executives wouldn't figure it out personally. It's too obvious if it's a film
You had me rollin g. Very good content. Highly underrated bro. Much success to you🙏
Neo does use the "Force Blast HaDouKen" move in the original trilogy. He used it once, to stop the sentinel in the real world, demonstrating his powers were not confined to the Matrix.
At the start, this film could have been like a Matrix New Nightmare. I agree with you, as soon as he wakes up, as a movie experience, you check out.
the new ship in the movie is called the Mnemosyne, which was the Greek goddess of memory
"the matrix 4 was bad on purpose" at least, thats what they want you to think. that they literally made it shit because of reasons.
she made it : for those who like to consume shit
You know what? The original matrix was an allegory for how cool firing guns in slow motion is. That's all we needed.
I don't think allegory means what you think it means
I don't understand why Neo cannot force blast his body into the air (fly), if he's mastered his inner Ryu since waking up.
There is somewhere where it was explained as him just jumping really far, might have been matrix online where Jump was the biggest method of traveling around rooftops
Don't be ridiculous. Neo wouldn't abandon Trinity like that after they'd just recently reunited.
@@shawn092182 Would he have to leave her? He's the one? And master of his inner Ryu. Couldnt he force blast he and Trinity out of danger?
Having a prison cell with a balcony reminds me of the prison cells in The Eerie from Game of Thrones, the sky cells. Just giving you the option. Except the sky cells had an entire wall missing instead of a balcony. And i think they also had angled floors, so you couldn't even sleep without the fear of rolling off
It's not a dedicated prison cell, just some place they stuck Neo in until they figured out what to do next. He's basically under house arrest in a hotel room.
Neil Patrick Harris saying "bullet time" actually made me tear up from cringing the hardest I have in my entire life
No matter the actual meta intent it's kinda shitty to put so many resources and hard work to something you're actually trying to make bad.
With the amount of creative freedom there still would have been the possibility to do all this meta commentary but also make something that's still actually good on its own terms.
Not if your intention is to have the franchise shelved forever, or at least indefinitely.
@@AbraCaStabra That is probably true..
Break it before it can get corrupted.
Yeah they are making a matrix 5 by the way@@AbraCaStabra
The whole thing about the original Matrix being a video game was to deceive the characters themselves. Wiping their memories completely would have only set off a whole another Rebellion inevitably. But whipping some memories and leaving False memories of around the truth along with a different identity helps keep them where the Matrix wants them. Still being drained any used by robots in the real world
the false sense of freedom
it was a masterpiece that fools couldn't see past and decided to run to social media to bash.
in my opinion The Matrix was the best movie ever made for a decade and then they decided to stop fans from asking for more by making one of the worst big budget movies ever made
It wasn’t the fans asking for more. The story was complete. It was all WB and their greed.
Making a film purposefully bad doesn't make it clever. Just bad.
yeah, thats why context matters.
Yeah. It was an amazing movie that really cared about its core fans, but that was also terrible.
The best 4/10 I've seen
The fact that analyst could literally control time and they still got out is what broke me. There is zero logic in this movie.
Damn dude this theory is mad solid
Your theory feels right to me, in fact I enjoyed the film for exactly the same reasons you suggest Lana might have made it for - a good high school reunions vibes things - supposing your high school was actually fantastic. (I guess, I am too awkward to enjoy any such reunion and my high school years were peak social anxiety.)
Hey Lextorias, I recently subscribed to your channel and have watched all your videos so far. Great work man, the reviews are detailed and informative, flow at a smooth pace, stay consistently entertaining, good sense of humor, and rather insightful remarks. All around a fun watch, you're really doing very well quality wise, and I hope your subscription numbers will reflect that quality in the reasonable future.
Ikr! Very good and deserves a spot on the youtube video essayist stage
on the first fight with Smith I was expecting Neo to say "I'm too old for this shit"
Thanks for clearing that, but why do you think they hated it? I thought they were involved with it in the same way as they were with Enter the Matrix.
Are there any interviews where they state their disdain for the Path of Neo video game?
"it was bad on purpose" that doesnt excuse it being bad
i went into this movie with no expectations other than to see where they would take the lore and i was pleasantly surprised, then i looked deeper into what the movie was saying and i must admit it is extremely clever and meta which is kinda what the 1st movie was so i dont know in my books its actually a very good movie almost perfect.
My thoughts exactly. I genuinely enjoyed it as being a parody/satire of the Matrix series, much like what the first Jurassic World was
Only reason it doesn't hold up to the first one is that the first movie (and to a degree the rest of them) broke the meta *and* were good movies in general, that still hold up to this day. This one stinks even if you susbend disbelief/inhale liquid shit beforehand/sacrifice to satan etc. It makes you cringe, and is inherently not a good Matrix movie.
But as a blockbuster shitpost, this one takes the spot, and probably will for a long time.
Good point about no one dying. Hats off to Dozer and the crew from the first movie. RIP
This little detail seals the theory for me
I remember reading no one actually wanted to make a matrix sequel except Warner bros, and were going to make it regardless on if they were going to participate, and Lana was wanting to still oversee it to make sure another doesn't get made
That makes sense lol
Awesome vid! And great points as well.
I enjoyed it and I just simply agree with u. Thanks!
I love this, I couldn't believe how bad this movie was.
