Wow interesting to hear this original version predating Larnell Lewis... I still think that performance by Larnell is one of the best pieces of technical drumming Ive ever heard but hearing this made me realize that he really just honed an already great drum part written by Sput! A lot of my favorite fills which I had attributed to Larnell were actually written by Sput…! Anyhoo doesn’t change the fact that both are phenomenal drummers.
Haven’t listened to this in a while and he makes me smile every time like you say so relaxed making it look easy but he’s got some really trick hard rhythms going there my fav snarky recording .
To those comparing this and the studio version - Sput is playing a slower tempo of this track and is accompanied by a different band roster (including percussionist). Of course it'll sound different. One of the best things about Snarky is you get a completely different vibe on a given track almost every time they play it.
Sput with the PAC-Man sound on the hi-hat is crazy. By far my favorite version. Especially how he rides the beat coming back in during the guest sit in. Crazy good. 51st time I have seen it. Can’t get enough
Subtle hint from Michael at 3:26 to keep driving the beat and push/support the sax player. Sput was straight on it without any hesitation.. what a pro!
A great example of something you just can't accomplish with technique only. It's an another level of playing where you have to be able to really feel the groove inside to make it happen. Love it!
As a young drummer larnell and sput are night and day and I learn from both and love both sput shows me how to do more with less and larnell teaches me the way to expand something into something huge
I'm probably going to start watching this everyday....Complete mastery of drumming dynamics, able to play deep in the pocket for minutes on end but able to wow you with chops when necessary. This is what drumming is about here!
I think that if this was filmed on the same day in the same studio Larnell played this in with the same quality picture and audio, that this version would be just as popular. While in my opinion there is a serious 'Fire vs. Ice' difference between the guys stylistically, I can't help but notice there's a noticeable gap in clarity of the audio between this and Larnell's version. You can hardly hear the ghost notes Sput plays and can't hear the rim hits altogether, when you can hear every sound on Larnell's kit. Larnell had some legendary technical soloing, but I think Sput has some tasty ass grooving here that deserves some mention at 5:10
I agree.... great drumming but I m not a fan of the cymbals either. Seems like he s gotta beat them to get the desired sound out of them. I play an assortment of K Customs from dark to the fast crash series and I don t have to beat them to death to get the sound I want out of them.
Well said! This dude has inspired me - locking up multiple bars as a single phrase - playing almost against the music but somehow locking the emotional intensity tempo and timbre of the whole - its pure synergistic genius :)
what's even more incredible IMO is that Larnell Lewis (the drummer for the We Like It Here album sessions) had only 3 DAYS to learn the songs and i think he played them much better than sput
***** that guy meant that he wrote the drum part because Mike doesn't right those and he is always part of the arranging process chiefly on songs like something ft. Lalah Hathaway and His outright song Bent Nails on Ground Up (2012)
Sput pioneered this track but I had to watch the We Like It Here version afterwards to serve as a sort of remedy. While I loved Sput's feel on this song, Larnell's got his own flare going on. They're both awesome in their own ways.
I feel the same way and then I just recently saw JT play this song with the band and, good lord, add another drummer to the badass list. Mike League knows how to pick 'em, man. They all have their on distinct playing style, but they're all equally good in my opinion. I got to see Sput with Ghost-Note recently and I almost couldn't handle it.
To me it seems like Sput plays this song more 'laidback' whereas Larnell really likes to put the drive in this song and play it a little bit faster. Either way, I have 2 great versions of the same song now ;)
Not fair. Don't compare. Sput laid it down. Somehow, Larnel learned it during a flight, which in itself is outrageous (It would take me weeks of listening!).
You should listen to more of Snarky Puppy. You might eat your words. They are incredible in that they embrace a multitude of genres and traditions into their compositions. Simply describing them as "modern funk" doesn't do them justice.
i dont mind if either he or larnell plays at all. they are both musical, creative, not far apart in style and larnell has talked about maintaining a certain snarky puppy sound which is why the way they play the songs isnt so far apart. larnell is more aggressive in his play, sput is more laid back generally but i dont feel you miss anything if either one plays
Spoke to him after a gig in Toronto, he's left handed and taught himself how to play right handed. Crazy dedication, but the results speak for themselves.
I would really like to know what's Sput's take on this specific recording. That smile at the end of the song is just so rewarding I find. Best version for me!
jajaja you probably right, at this point i dont know who really sound better with the band Larnell or Robert, both are awesome drummers. Snarky Puppy is one of those bands that we want that last forever.
How many favourite drummers am I allowed to have
Four at a time
17, and no more than 345.
Sput and everyone else
I was thinking this same thing haha

SPUT is Larnell's teacher. At least one of them. For what it's worth
@@johnstamos4325 thanks for this information. I didn't know that
@@johnstamos4325 Yes, Larnell said it himself. I can confirm that
Both versions are amazing in there own way
Larnell idolized Sput.
This guy is so chill while he's playing I imagine he can order a pizza and fold laundry at the same time he's performing!
I can really imagine him thinking about the laundry he left on the weather this night
Haven’t listened to this in a while and he makes me smile every time like you say so relaxed making it look easy but he’s got some really trick hard rhythms going there my fav snarky recording .
Man, I'm a bassist, but drummers faschinate me more than anything. And than you find this...

WOW! so fluent , groovy, yet conservative when needed. What an amazing drummer he is. He's an inspiration.
I watch him everyday.
Subtle hint from Michael at 3:26 to keep driving the beat and push/support the sax player. Sput was straight on it without any hesitation.. what a pro!
Yet he barely changed anything lol
First time I didn't miss Larnell. Fucking amazing energy, great groove, lickity giggidy chops. God bless my good sir, God bless.
A great example of something you just can't accomplish with technique only. It's an another level of playing where you have to be able to really feel the groove inside to make it happen. Love it!
probably one of the best cymbal set-ups I've heard in a long time
As a young drummer larnell and sput are night and day and I learn from both and love both sput shows me how to do more with less and larnell teaches me the way to expand something into something huge

Robert Sput Searight is engraving his name among the legandries
Absolutely phenomenal drumming here.
I cant ever imagine liking a person who dislikes this, musician or not..

I have never really got into these cymbals....but that ride sounds amazing ..yes sir Sput..

Thanks Robert for completely killing the phrase "less is more"
awesome

.
Gretch Mad vb cee edged
wow great groove!
Hi
justin stanton casually playing trumpet and keys at the same time
I just paid attention to that.
Just saw that. Awesome.
He is playing the same note through the whole section in the same rhythm as his keys part. Still amazing though.
There are few who enjoy their job as much as Sput Searight.
How he´s playing the ride gives me chills...
That ride cymbal is class of it's own...
WHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Sput is at that master level of grooving with tasteful fills
Sput knows the songs in and out..Once you know where you at and you got musical ammo..."GO FOR IT '..
what's even more incredible IMO is that Larnell Lewis (the drummer for the We Like It Here album sessions) had only 3 DAYS to learn the songs and i think he played them much better than sput
Jmil96 Uh, Sput plays it much better than Larnell...
***** Well uhm im pretty sure sput wrote the song so no shit. regardless larnell murdered it in the studio
***** that guy meant that he wrote the drum part because Mike doesn't right those and he is always part of the arranging process chiefly on songs like something ft. Lalah Hathaway and His outright song Bent Nails on Ground Up (2012)
stephen breakthrough that's exactly what I meant! Lol
Sput pioneered this track but I had to watch the We Like It Here version afterwards to serve as a sort of remedy. While I loved Sput's feel on this song, Larnell's got his own flare going on.
They're both awesome in their own ways.
+Jared Sokoloff so stood still with no emotion?
Victor Dy they are both really good friends
I feel the same way and then I just recently saw JT play this song with the band and, good lord, add another drummer to the badass list. Mike League knows how to pick 'em, man. They all have their on distinct playing style, but they're all equally good in my opinion.
I got to see Sput with Ghost-Note recently and I almost couldn't handle it.
I agree, I like Larnell's take on this song much better. Maybe the mix is playing into it but it doesn't quite mesh as well for me.
Jared Sokoloff funny, there are parts of this song that are Mars Volta esque to me, so I can see that
I like Larnell's and Robert's pretty much equally but there's something about Roberts that makes me smile inside.
me too. Robert is more a "musician" than a pure drummer. he 's carrying the song, and keep the canvas as a keyboard player he is too
@@babar69110 larnell plays keys too now. however sput is more advanced at it
This deserves way more views. Excellent stuff!
his playing is pheno-meinl !
Okay Bill Evans
Sput has one of the best feels I’ve ever heard
Geesh!!!!!!! Sput/ Larnell .....I just love both!!!!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
To me it seems like Sput plays this song more 'laidback' whereas Larnell really likes to put the drive in this song and play it a little bit faster. Either way, I have 2 great versions of the same song now ;)
Sput play it with more tasty groove but larnels solo sounds better IMO . Both are great drummers
Bram, Interesting, I was just thinking the same exact thing.
Not fair. Don't compare. Sput laid it down. Somehow, Larnel learned it during a flight, which in itself is outrageous (It would take me weeks of listening!).
larnell drives the beat. sput plays behind the beat.. exactly right spot on
yup. Larnell pushing forward and he is pulling back the beat .. both are awesome on their way.
Robert, you make me smile at the end of the day, unbelievable !!
Sput is the man!!! Love your playing bro!!!
I love the snare sound. Plus that stage looks so tight; wonder how they can play so comfortably.
That snare.... gospel-licious.
One of the best drum solos I've ever watched.. this band never lets me down... love em
I really like how Meinl shows the artist at the gig. We get a chance to hear the cymbals in real life applications.
Such a musician
We want mooooore!!
Whoa! I cant stop watching this and I was actually there. I believe I briefly spoke to the guy who recorded this prior to the show...
Simply amazing, one of my favourite drummers ever! Groovy!
Incredible precision and groove
I fucking love that snare!
Wasn't expecting the Jeff Coffin guest spot. That just made this video all the better.
You should listen to more of Snarky Puppy. You might eat your words. They are incredible in that they embrace a multitude of genres and traditions into their compositions. Simply describing them as "modern funk" doesn't do them justice.
I can't believe I missed seeing this! I am filled with regret.
C.S.I. - Can't Stand Idiots. Love it.
This song is so cool. Sput's drumming is something else man!
Sand crash ride 22, w/rivets. So smooth.
A true master of the art 🙏🏻
Playing and fit your sit at the same time. 4:47 Incredible.
this music doesn't get the gift it deserves. bad ass!
Singles between floortam and bass drum is just sick.(At the end)
最高過ぎる!!!!!!ナイスグルーヴと驚異的なテンポキープ。全てが心地よい、、!
Yeah Meinl! Thanks for giving more audience to this awesome band and this awesome drummer!
Man he's got just about the best drum sound going!
Wow that was Soooo sweet
i dont mind if either he or larnell plays at all. they are both musical, creative, not far apart in style and larnell has talked about maintaining a certain snarky puppy sound which is why the way they play the songs isnt so far apart.
larnell is more aggressive in his play, sput is more laid back generally but i dont feel you miss anything if either one plays
Complete player, increroble performance!!! I am from brasil!
I saw him live few days ago and i have a new idol!! learning so much from him! thanks Robert!!!
Damit this one made me understand like never before that this man is crazy 🙏🙏🙏✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿🛐
Great performance. Love watching Sput's playing from this perspective.
He's Something Special...
I watched a lot of drum solo's but this is ridiculous.
I can't wait to see the band in Amsterdam this year !!!
So awesome.
Those triplets at 7:27 - thought he was out of tricks by this point. Damn.
Dude that PAC-Man hi-hat chomp chomp
Unbelievable so sharp it could cut you yet so full of feeling
The last minute ..... Yummmm!
Great playing!
The original drummer of Snarky Puppy, also Keyboardist and Musical Director for VF Jams Band.
Holy hell this guys a groove monster!
Good googa mooga. Sput is amazingly ambidextrous. That's some ungodly stuff he's doing in there...
Spoke to him after a gig in Toronto, he's left handed and taught himself how to play right handed. Crazy dedication, but the results speak for themselves.
My new favourite drummer (along with Larnell Lewis!)
I would really like to know what's Sput's take on this specific recording. That smile at the end of the song is just so rewarding I find.
Best version for me!
Amazing drummer!!!!
What a groove! This is my favorite version of drums for this song.
Awedome skills and amazing tone
THIS IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD :-)
Heard this guy drumming in "For Free" on Kendrick's new album. DAMN. Glad I looked this up.
seriously ? now i have a reason to listen to hiphop once again.
Wait for real? I love that Kendrick song. However "For Free?" is off his album To Pimp a Butterfly, not DAMN.
Stop the negative feedback!!! Why is that? Is there something wrong in your life?
Awesome work, "Sput", really awesome! Congrats!
I love this guys groove!
its christmas eve..lookin at these cats make me wanna be on a gig tonight
Tight!! I love this sooooo Much!!
Amazing amazing drummer
this is so good!
Michael at the break at 1:17.. Amazing musicians
That's was JUST GREAT!!!!
Love that guy playing :)
I know this video is focused on the drumming, but wow! Jeff Coffin sitting in with Snarky Puppy? Amazing!
That drum set is now haunted
+WhaddupImJohn Huh?
+TrumpetGuy7 ghost notes
BA DUM TSHH
jajaja you probably right, at this point i dont know who really sound better with the band Larnell or Robert, both are awesome drummers. Snarky Puppy is one of those bands that we want that last forever.
Amazing... Just amazing...
Meinl is setting the standard for cymbals of the future.
Fricking Awesome
