I am very new to gel polish and was wondering how to use my extensive collection of regular polish with the benefits of gel. You answered my question beautifully. Thank you so much for an excellent tutorial.
Thank you for the quick tutorial! I'm in the middle of doing my nails now. I appreciate the idea to use hand sanitizer instead of rubbing alcohol to clean my nails!
Thank you! I just started using gel polish, but I was depressed seeing all the bottles of regular nail polish I have! I thought I could do this, but I wasn’t sure, so I’m glad you made this video!
You’re welcome! I totally understand and there is no point in wasting them! You can even use them for nail art etc then just seal it with the top coat!
I have found that nail polish thinner will turn almost every regular polish into a quick-drying polish. Not quite instant, but, easily within 5 minutes. I use the ordinary cheap 4 oz bottle (costs $4) and have tried with all the economical brands, it works great. That, together with this gelly sandwich method, lets me make a nice gel mani using regular polishes in a very quick time.
Oh interesting! Could you give me more info on this? What type of nail polish thinner do you use? Also are you talking about the ordinary dropper bottles. Do you use this to place a drop of thinner on each nail after painting it?
Drops go into the regular nail polish. It fixes goopy and old polish. I use it all the time. It basically replaces the stuff that evaporates over time. Go little by little though, then gently shake.
I've been doing this for awhile now but you gave me some useful tips like capping the nail so ty. I like doing this because I usually use a bunch of colors. I like designs, stamping and stuff like that but don't want to spend that much on a bunch of gel-polish.
I love watching your tutorials videos. They are quick and straight to the point. I just got into gel nails and I refer to your previous video a lot for guidance. However, I was told that u couldn't use regular nail polish with gel so I threw several of my regular polish away. Then I saw this video. Thank u thank u thank u, for this video. It didn't make sense to me ppl cause I would see ppl at salons do this all the time with regular polish and uv/led lights.
Your welcome, I’m glad this helps! I don’t believe this is a common practice at salons however because you do need to wait for regular polish to fully dry before applying a top coat of gel (I recommend atleast 12 hours) but yes you can use regular polish with gel as the base and top coat.
There’s also a product called hydrocol that you can mix with any polish to turn it into gel. It’s a bit messy though because you have to mix it in a separate dish and use a gel brush or clean brush to apply it. But it does work. I actually like this idea better because all you’d need to do is let it dry fully. But hydrocol does work.
Use insta-dry polish and it dries very quickly. Also I use stamping plates for design with regular polish in between. I have used the fast-dry top coat and it didn't cause any problems but I don't remember how I did it... It's been a few years.
Oo thanks for the tip! I’ll have to get some insta dry polish and try it out. Stamping plates are something that I still haven’t truly mastered. I actually recently bought a huge pack of water decal stickers for nails so that will likely be in an upcoming video! Let me know if you have any tricks for those :)
Thanks so much I knew it would be possible I have so many nail polishes that are not gel so...yea good looking and love your nail color against ur skin it’s pretty
I now use a peel based coat on the bottom, then use either regular polish or gel polish (2 coats) curing if using gel then a gel top coat then cure. I get bored after 4-5 days so I soak in hot water for 5 minutes or so then it comes off pretty easy. OMG!!!
@@CreateYourSpace_. No it doesn't. I will say it works great with gel polish but just yesterday I tried using with regular polish, letting it dry thoroughly before using a gel top coat and curing the top coat.... then that evening it chipped. I was disappointed but now know it doesn't work that well with regular polish but really well with gel polish. So give it a try!

I’m so happy, I found this video! I was thinking of just doing a clear, basecoat and topcoat and curing it and then using regular polish on top with a regular clear, anti-chip topcoat. This way, I can change out the color when I get bored with it (and I get bored with it easily). I also have a lot of trouble taking cured gel polish off without ruining my nails because of over-filing - it’s just so hard for me to get it all off (even with the remover that ‘cracks’ the gel color). I also thought this would be a way to have clear, cured gel nails to protect my natural nails (while they grow out after having acrylic nails removed) and let me change out the color with regular polish on top every week, if I feel like it. I hope this makes sense. What do you think?
So glad it was helpful! Yes you can totally do this! You will notice a slight dip as the clear gel polish grows out but you can fill it and keep going with your colors. I never file my gel off I only use acetone to make sure I don’t damage my nails. I recommend you do the same :)
Dors this method make the regular polish last longer and not chip ? Because even if I use regular polish and a non chip top coat it Chips the same day😢😢
@@CreateYourSpace_. What about using Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dry over the regular nail polish to dry quickly, then applying the gel topcoat? This nail dry really works quickly, like less than five minutes or so.
Those usually only dry the top layer and don’t allow the nail polish underneath to harden. If you put gel on top with out that layer under hardening, your polish will likely wrinkle or peel off. You could give it a try but I don’t think it will work. Good luck!

Since I’ve only just come across your channel (new subscriber here :p), the link doesn’t seem to work any longer. Search for gel nail polish on Amazon and there are a few brands like modelones, melody susie and kipozi that I like. Sally hansen gel polish is great to (make sure it’s the one you need the lamp for)
You can also do a regular polish manicure, and then use the gel top coat for chrome powder. I polish one day like I normally would, with regular top/base coat. The next day, I apply a no wipe gel top coat, cure for 30 seconds, apply the chrome powder, brush off any excess, apply a second layer of gel top coat, then cure for 90 seconds and its all done. It may seem like waiting until the second day is annoying, but the reality is that the gel cures so quickly that it only takes a few minutes to apply.
Have you ever done this by using a regular quick dry top coat to help the polish layers dry faster, then applying the gel polish and curing? I'm just curious if this would affect it, because quick dry top coat is so convenient
Good question! I have never personally tried it however I think quick dry top coat only helps the top layer dry however the layers underneath are still soft/wet for a little while. I am not sure 100% but I think the layers below being wet might still cause the gel top coat to wrinkle eventually (within a few hours). If you end up trying this out let me know how it goes!
@@katherinehayes it worked out pretty well! I applied the quick dry polish, then only had to wait an hour for the remaining layers underneath to dry fully. My manicure lasted well over a week doing that!

Wow. This is such a cool method. It’s a shame to get rid of regular nail polish. Can you just apply a top coat only on regular nail polish. Does this work? ( regular base coat ).
No i don't buff or remove the sticky layer. That layer actually helps your polish adhere better so no need to remove it. If you really want to you can wipe your base coat with rubbing alcohol to get rid of the layer but there is no need.
Thank you! Removal for a gelly sandwich manicure is the same as removing a gel manicure. Just use acetone and cottons balls. If you want to see it via video my other gel nail video starts off with removal of my previous gel polish. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the video ❤ can you actually use a regular nail polish fast dry top coat like seche vitte before the gel top coat? This would make the process much faster!
I have never tried gel color on a regular base coat. The only thing I have tried is a gel top coat on regular nail polish just to stop it from chipping sooner than usual.
Hello lovely girl , if i use gel base coat, regular nail polish then wait for about a few hours or a day after that apply my gel top coat. How long it lasts? How many hours should i wait for my regular nail polish to dry before applying gel top coat? What causes chip or crack in nail? Sorry I asked so many question but you are tge only person should answer me I trust you
Hi! If you apply your nail polish in that order as a gelly sandwich, it should last atleast 10-12 days ( that’s how long it lasts for me and sometimes longer). If you cannot wait until the next day to paint your top coat then you should wait atleast 4-5 hours for your polish to fully dry. It’s better to paint thin coats so it dries in between quicker. Usually chips or cracks are from the polish not being sealed properly around the edges and lifting happens from not prepping the nail properly before applying the base coat. Hope this helps!
I was doing that many years ago. But started an gel allergies. So now I found non allergy base and top coat. But us is hard to find colored gel polish that will not get me allergy. I'm planning to start sandwiches again🎉 just checking is there any new Technics ❤
Yes! You likely have a no wipe top coat. This a specific gel polish and does not leave behind a sticky layer and usually only comes as a top coat only and not the other polishes like the base or colors.
I have never tried it but I image so. Just make sure you prep your nails for a good base gel coat and what ever you decide to put on top of that should be good. Edit: Maybe try 2 layers of base coat before the regular polish to give your tips some strength.
Hi there,! I have just found your videos. I have just used Amaili (spelling) gel polish (5 coats to get coverage). I know it isn’t a high quality line but 5 coats is a lot and looks very thick on the nail. I wonder if you know of an equivalent product that provides better coverage.
Did you use 5 coats of just the colored gel polish alone? Or are the 5 coats including your base coat and top coat? Also depends on the color you bought, if it was meant to be a sheer color then it will take a lot to build up a solid look. Normally 2 coats of the colored polish is enough. If you want to try a different brand from Amazon, try this set rstyle.me/cz-n/f8fb2rcmun7 by modelones
Yes such a money saver! No I don’t remove the sticky layer from the base coat before applying the regular polish. I leave it and it seems to apply fine :)

@@CreateYourSpace_. seche vite top coat isn't drops, it's a fast dry top coat a real game changer. I just tried it with your technique and it works beautiful for me. Thanks for sharing
Hi have a question just came home from getting gel polish put on but I want to enhance the color with my regular polish can I put it right over the get top coat?
I just read that regular polish takes 24 hours to dry fully and gel top coat should not be applied until after the regular polish is completely dry, 24 hours after applying regular polish.
From what I understand it’s a few hours and not 24 but it probably depends on the brand as well. That is why I wait until the next day to paint my top coat :)
Hello, I have a question. When using dark (regular) nail polish, it usually stains the nail a bit yellow. If I use this method, does the regular nail polish stain through the gel base coat ?
Great question! Yes the gel base coat will protect your nails from the polish you place on top. Does this staining happen to you even with a regular polish base coat? Or do you place the polish directly on your nail?
Ahh I see. Yes good quality base coat and polish will probably help but the gel base coat will also act as a barrier between your nails and the polish.
Good question! Looking back at my video I think I forgot to mention that I do wipe the residue off my nails just with a cotton swab and some alcohol. I am not sure if painting on a sticky layer would work well, that layer is meant to stick to the next gel polish layer but not sure if that applies to regular polish. If you end up trying this I would love to see the finished result! You can tag me on Instagram @twoafterido :)
How long does it take to remove the gelly sandwich? It would take me so long to remove gel polish and it was so damaging. All that soaking and scraping 😣 I’m looking for an easier solution.
It’s pretty much the same as removing gel but the regular nail polish in the middle comes off way easier. Try 100% acetone with cotton balls and tin foil to trap the heat for 5 minutes and it should crumble right off!
Going over them with a buffing block will help because it removes that slippery oily layer on the very top for sure! I have another video where I do gel nails and I go into depth about prep, that should be helpful :)
Is it ok that the base coat is tacky when u put on the regular non-gel polish over it? or should u wipe the base coat with polish remover to get rid of the residual stickiness before u move on to the color polish?
@@user-rd7k Yes so basically paint your GEL base coat, cure it in the lamp and then wipe the tacky layer on that base coat with some rubbing alcohol and a paper towel. Then when you are done the regular polish and the GEL top coat the very last step again is to wipe the tacky layer on your top coat with the same thing. Hope this makes sense. Also just an FYI you can buy no wipe top coats that just cure smooth with out the tacky layer :)
so i just tried this on my nails. im at the stage after i put the gel base coat on and the regular nail polish. im waiting for it to dry before i put on the gel top coat. while im sitting here waiting, ive started noticing a lot of tiny bubbles appear. why do you think this is happening and how do i fix it?!
Are the bubbles forming in your regular polish? I would maybe try taking it off and cleaning the base coat with some alcohol and reapplying. Sounds like maybe something was left behind on the base coat and is reacting with the polish? Just a theory as I can’t see it and it hasn’t happened to me before. Good luck!
ive since experimented with this and found the best way to use a normal polish as gel is to mix the 2. no bubbles or anything weird. it worked wonders.
Ahh yes! I have heard of this method but have not personally tried it. Thanks for sharing! I may try this in a future video and do my first impression! :)
You can use acetone. I have another video on my channel on DIY gel nails at home and in the first part of that video I show you how to remove the old gel before apply a new polish. Hope that helps :)
I like to keep my nails on the short/medium side. I find I get irritated once my nails grown too long. The nail length I have in this video is my favourite and I basically try to leave a nice thin even line of growth on the end when trimming them before I start. I hope that makes sense!
Have you done this without using products from the same line? Would love to do this with cat eye magnetic polish-all the good polishes are super expensive, shipped, yada yada, so don't want to pay for anything else from the line unless key is brand matching.
Yes I have, I have not had an issue with mixing brands. I have never used cat eye magnetic polish though so I unfortunately not have experience with that specifically.
Gel nail art is similar but you just need to cure under the lamp at each step when you are happy with your design then move on to the next color or part of your design. Its different depending on what kind of design you are doing. The nice thing about Gel is its stays wet until you cure it under the lamp so you can play around and mix and move your design until you are happy with it. Is there a specific design you would like to see a video on?
Also another way is to do your designs how you normally do and add a regular layer of top coat to seal it in place. Then 24 hours later add a layer of gel top coat and cure it under the lamp, this will help it last a lot longer.
That’s a good question! When you say fading do you mean that it looses the glossy shine? Or does it come off? I am not sure what would be causing the yellowing but I would maybe try a different brand of top coat.
The glossy shine is still intact but the regular polish underneath the top coat turns yellowish when it's nude nail paint and white when it's lavender or baby pink . I have tried it with 2 different brands. I don't know if it's the climate or the way I apply. Am I the only one with this issue?
No the UV lamps is not a fan, it is a light that causes a chemical reaction with gel polishes only which makes them harden (cure). You can’t use this lamp with regular polish it won’t do anything.
Okay now i understand why mine doesn’t work, i thought something wrong to my UV lamp. So miracle gel polish not really a gel, that’s make since i made sandwich but its not working 😅. thanks for confirming.
Yes, you could but the base coat is there for a few reasons. Firstly it gives your nails a thicker more salon quality looking manicure. Secondly a gel base coat adheres your nails in a different way than regular polish which gives you manicure that longevity that you get from only gel manicure. If you skip the base coat I highly doubt your manicure will last as long cause it will likely peel off. Hope this helps!
@@CreateYourSpace_. I thought that if you have Apres or any soft gel full nail extension, acetone would melt off the nail extension along with the gel polish.
That is what I have done for years, this way I can use up my favorite regular nail polish.

Does the nail polish / gel stains your nails yellow when doing gel sandwich method?

Wow. This is such a cool method. It’s a shame to get rid of regular nail polish. Can you just apply a top coat only on regular nail polish. Does this work? ( regular base coat ).
Thanks! Yes you could but it might not last as long!
Do you not remove the sticky layer or lightly buff after curing base coat?
No i don't buff or remove the sticky layer. That layer actually helps your polish adhere better so no need to remove it. If you really want to you can wipe your base coat with rubbing alcohol to get rid of the layer but there is no need.
Thanks for the video 🙏 so you can’t make your regular nail polish dry with the uv lamp ?
No unfortunately not :( it has to be a gel polish that cured with UV light.
Szia köszönöm szépen szép lett körmöd.
Thank you so much
You’re welcome!
Can I do this over my gel nail extension ? Then I wouldn't use acetone I guess. Thanks 😊
Yep you should be able to, I have never tried it though!
Really helpful video!! However, I always wondered how to remove a gelly sandwich because I can never fully remove all product
I haven’t personally tried it but someone else in my comment section says it works for her
@@CreateYourSpace_. cool! I’ll try it too and report back 🫡
Sounds good!
Hi can i use reguler base coat and top it with the color gel nail ?
@@CreateYourSpace_. that will be nice. Although it was my first time that I watch your video but you are so lovely and I loved you🌸
@@kanisalih9622 Aw thanks alot! Glad you enjoyed :) stick around for more videos!
I was doing that many years ago. But started an gel allergies. So now I found non allergy base and top coat. But us is hard to find colored gel polish that will not get me allergy. I'm planning to start sandwiches again🎉 just checking is there any new Technics ❤
Nice! Good luck and hope it doesn’t cause allergies !
My gel top coat never has a sticky layer although the base coat does.
Yes! You likely have a no wipe top coat. This a specific gel polish and does not leave behind a sticky layer and usually only comes as a top coat only and not the other polishes like the base or colors.
Can this be done on full nail tips?
I have never tried it but I image so. Just make sure you prep your nails for a good base gel coat and what ever you decide to put on top of that should be good.
Edit: Maybe try 2 layers of base coat before the regular polish to give your tips some strength.
@@CreateYourSpace_. Thank you!
I love this idea bc I don't want to buy $$ gel cured polish. Do you remove the inhibitor layer before polishing with regular nail color? Thank you
Yes such a money saver! No I don’t remove the sticky layer from the base coat before applying the regular polish. I leave it and it seems to apply fine :)
hello,i like your polish video, can i ask you where you buy this nail art product,i also want to buy diy at home, looking forward to your early reply, thanks~
Thank you! You can buy the products off amazon. I have the items linked in the description box below the video. Hope this helps.
@@CreateYourSpace_. ok,thank you so much~
When removing does it come off with acetone? Or does it need to be filed off?
I like to just file the top shiny layer to help the acetone soak in better but you can just remove with acetone only, filing is not mandatory :)
Can u put regular polish over cured gel nail polishes ?
Yes you can :)
How about using seche vite top coat to fast dry?
Usually quick dry drops only cure the top layer of polish but the polish underneath is still soft and this usually causes issues
@@CreateYourSpace_. seche vite top coat isn't drops, it's a fast dry top coat a real game changer. I just tried it with your technique and it works beautiful for me. Thanks for sharing
Great! Just keep an eye on it for the next day or 2 to make sure it doesn’t wrinkle under that top coat :)
Hi have a question just came home from getting gel polish put on but I want to enhance the color with my regular polish can I put it right over the get top coat?
Hi Tina, yes you can put regular nail polish on top of gel :)
Do I buff the gel top coat first? Or just put the polish right over it?
7:38 capping the free edge
Glad you thought that one part was helpful :)
When you remove them do you use regular nail polish remover or still have to soak/wrap them?
I still use acetone and wrap them because the top layer is gel and regular nail polish remover won’t work for that.
Yes the gel base coat will
protect your nails from the polish you place on top. Does this staining happen to you even with a regular polish base coat? Or do you place the polish directly on your nail?
@@CreateYourSpace_. I do use a base coat. But honestly, my nail polish are cheap. That's probably makes the staining worse :')
Ahh I see. Yes good quality base coat and polish will probably help but the gel base coat will also act as a barrier between your nails and the polish.
Do you have to use a Gel base? Or can you use a regular nail polish base? Thanks!!
You can use regular polish as your base! Just make sure you wait 12-24 hours before applying the gel
after base coat - did you wipe residue off first before you put on regular polish?
Good question! Looking back at my video I think I forgot to mention that I do wipe the residue off my nails just with a cotton swab and some alcohol. I am not sure if painting on a sticky layer would work well, that layer is meant to stick to the next gel polish layer but not sure if that applies to regular polish.
If you end up trying this I would love to see the finished result! You can tag me on Instagram @twoafterido :)
Thanks
You’re welcome!
I just take a nail file and file it off. Quicker
Thanks for sharing! I usually file the top layer than use acetone as I get impatient filing 😂
Where do you buy a primer for nails ? Never heard of it
You can buy it on Amazon or a nail/beauty supply store they sells gel polish. Here is a link to one on Amazon
rstyle.me/cz-n/fj84ejcmun7
Would this work with a builder base instead of a regular base coat?
Yes! You can use a hard gel or builder gel under the regular nail polish if you want more strength/structure to your nail :)
Do you put gel on the first coat
The first coat is a gel base coat :)
So gel base cost and regular polish then gel top coat 😊
Yes, but just wait for the regular polish to fully dry :)
Do you need to rough the nail first?
Going over them with a buffing block will help because it removes that slippery oily layer on the very top for sure! I have another video where I do gel nails and I go into depth about prep, that should be helpful :)
Is it ok that the base coat is tacky when u put on the regular non-gel polish over it? or should u wipe the base coat with polish remover to get rid of the residual stickiness before u move on to the color polish?
Yes! I had someone bring this to my attention that I forgot to mention this step. I wiped the sticky layer off before painting the regular polish. :)
Just with a paper towel or with acetone?
Wipe it with alcohol and a paper towel. Don’t use acetone as it will break down the gel base coat you just put on. Hope this helps :)
No worries!
Is there any particular reason why you wait 24 hours to apply the top coat? Is it just to be extra sure the regular polish is dry?
Yes 24 hours allows the nail polish to completely dry otherwise the gel can wrinkle if it’s not fully dried
so i just tried this on my nails. im at the stage after i put the gel base coat on and the regular nail polish. im waiting for it to dry before i put on the gel top coat. while im sitting here waiting, ive started noticing a lot of tiny bubbles appear. why do you think this is happening and how do i fix it?!
@@corrinebennett2693 hello... What did you actually mix? If you dont mind sharing... I want to try
What if I don't have the uv lights?
Then you can’t use gel polish. There is no way around it.
How to remove this gel polish at home?
You can use acetone. I have another video on my channel on DIY gel nails at home and in the first part of that video I show you how to remove the old gel before apply a new polish. Hope that helps :)
Do u have a certain nail length that you have or are going to grow them long? That video was beautiful your nails were 100% perfect
I like to keep my nails on the short/medium side. I find I get irritated once my nails grown too long. The nail length I have in this video is my favourite and I basically try to leave a nice thin even line of growth on the end when trimming them before I start. I hope that makes sense!
Glad this was helpful and thank you!
What do I use to remove this gelly sandwich ? Acetone?
Yes you would need acetone since the top coat is gel polish :)
@@CreateYourSpace_. thank you !
@@CreateYourSpace_. Okay, great, thank you ☆
I make nail design on my nails with regular polish. How can i make them into gel nails?
Gel nail art is similar but you just need to cure under the lamp at each step when you are happy with your design then move on to the next color or part of your design. Its different depending on what kind of design you are doing. The nice thing about Gel is its stays wet until you cure it under the lamp so you can play around and mix and move your design until you are happy with it. Is there a specific design you would like to see a video on?
Also another way is to do your designs how you normally do and add a regular layer of top coat to seal it in place. Then 24 hours later add a layer of gel top coat and cure it under the lamp, this will help it last a lot longer.
Hey! Do you know why gel top coat fades or turn the regular polish yellow when used together?
That’s a good question! When you say fading do you mean that it looses the glossy shine? Or does it come off? I am not sure what would be causing the yellowing but I would maybe try a different brand of top coat.
The glossy shine is still intact but the regular polish underneath the top coat turns yellowish when it's nude nail paint and white when it's lavender or baby pink . I have tried it with 2 different brands. I don't know if it's the climate or the way I apply. Am I the only one with this issue?
Ah strange, I haven’t had this happen to me :( sorry wish I could help!
No problem ❤️
how long does this manicure last?
Usually about 2 weeks since it’s not as strong as a full gel manicure.
I had a question…
Will the nail polish drier machine dry a regular nail polish?
As in can we use that to just dry the regurgitate nail polish alone?
No the UV lamps is not a fan, it is a light that causes a chemical reaction with gel polishes only which makes them harden (cure). You can’t use this lamp with regular polish it won’t do anything.
Okay now i understand why mine doesn’t work, i thought something wrong to my UV lamp. So miracle gel polish not really a gel, that’s make since i made sandwich but its not working 😅. thanks for confirming.
You’re welcome!!
Why do you need the gel base coat under the regular polish?
Couldn’t you just use a gel top coat?
Yes, you could but the base coat is there for a few reasons. Firstly it gives your nails a thicker more salon quality looking manicure. Secondly a gel base coat adheres your nails in a different way than regular polish which gives you manicure that longevity that you get from only gel manicure. If you skip the base coat I highly doubt your manicure will last as long cause it will likely peel off. Hope this helps!
@@CreateYourSpace_. Thanks!
Your welcome :) thanks for commenting!
How do you remove it if you have Apres(soft gel full cover nails) and how would you remove it if you don't have Apres just from your natural nails ? 💅
You can use acetone either way :)
@@CreateYourSpace_. I thought that if you have Apres or any soft gel full nail extension, acetone would melt off the nail extension along with the gel polish.
How do I know it’s dry?
The polish will cure in the lamp and harden so it won’t move or feel wet anymore.
This would stay for how many days?
Usually mine will stay for about 10-14 days then I’ll notice a small chip or crack in the polish.
