This is such a good video. I have to say, in the first scenario you assumed you placed the implant too close to the mandibular nerve. Why do we automatically second guess ourselves?! I’m sure you are extremely conscientious and knew exactly where you placed it. This comment may get negative responses but a male counterpart would not have jumped to that conclusion, at least in my experience 😂 And as a hygienist in multiple private practices over the years, I’ve seen what can only be metal sensitivities in women for decades. Even when the margins or biological width is not an issue, they are on a 3 month recall, biofilms are minimal, redness and inflammation is isolated around gold crowns etc in some individuals. Zirconia has been game changing in my world In my area there are still so many dentist placing amalgams.
Hello! Your channel is a godsend I just discovered it thank you 🙏🏻I’ve got a bit of a complicated case. Fractured 3/4 of my front tooth at 14 due to a biking accident. Subsequent root canal there as well as multiple crowns maybe 3 or 4 I have lost count over the years. I’m now 47. Additionally about 10 years ago a dentist talked me into doing a porcelain veneer on the other front tooth because she said it was also cracked visible on xray but not to my eye. So I did it 😟now I’m being told I need two implants on my front teeth. On the original root canal tooth because the metal post is once again loose and fractured( but it’s been this way for 1.5 years now) and also needing an implant on the other front tooth because there’s an abscess visible on a CT scan. No pain or symptoms. So, over a year ago I got two consults for implants. One from a surgeon that does titanium and the other that’s a holistic oral surgeon for zirconia. I wanted to go with zirconia but my dentist has scared me about choosing this route even though he refers and works with both surgeons. He said he still has seen way too many fractures on the zirconia implants and they have to be redone 😮I’ve asked him if this was due to the surgeon’s placement and work and he claims no that if I’m going to go to anyone for zirconium implants he’s the guy. So I froze and haven’t done anything 😔I’m super confused on which direction to go even though I wanted zirconia but I certaintly do not want to end up back in the chair dealing with failure. Any advice would be so appreciated.
Titanium destroys the gut microbiome - ie the factory that makes your immune system. Traditional medicine and dentistry do not consider the knock on impact of a procedure on other parts of the body. Holistic medicine and dentistry do because they understand the interconnectedness of each part. This is why zirconium is the optimum healthy solution for an implant - AND it is strong. ☘️
I have a lot of titanium implants in my mouth with no problems but after seeing your video I am wondering if I may have problems as I age. Should I consider have the titanium implants changed to the Zirconia implants?
About to go down the implant journey. Very grateful to find your channel I am in Australia and now looking to find someone who does zirconia implants here. Thank you so much for your clear informative explanation.
Hi I'm in Australia too. Laser and Holistic dental in South Yarra, Melbourne offer Zirconia implants. I haven't had any implants but have had other treatment there and highly recommend them. Hope it helps.
Nice to hear this vision. I had a cavity in a toothroot. (Caused by flossing?) (Second tooth pass the cornertooth, under) Under the gum. My dentist has tried to fill it. 6 months ago. But it still feels very sensitive, I m worried that tooth has to Go out. Hé wants to place a bridge. Do you know of Better alternatives?
I'm getting an "All On 4" procedure done in a few weeks. I know the permanent set of teeth are Zirconia, but it seems here you are talking about the screws or the implant portion that goes into the gum. I am wondering what material will be used in mine - I'm guessing the Titanium because it sounds like it is the most common. I will have a temporary set of teeth for 4-6 months while everything heals, and I'm pretty sure only the permanent set is Zirconia. I don't know how anyone affords proper dental care these days. I'm only doing the lower set of teeth & it's still over $20K. But I'm down to only 5 teeth on the bottom due to a sublingual medication I took for years & can only pay for it because of the class action settlement. (though I wouldn't need to get this done if they had be honest about the side effects of the medication)
I would be grateful for either one. it's the most disappointing thing about not being at least moderately wealthy is as we lose our teeth. It's a slow and painful weight to dentures every time. I see somebody on TV with the perfect smile it's the only thing that makes me envious in this world.
Dissimilar metals in an acidic environment will create microcurrants that can stimulate nerves and cause corrosion that can cause heavy metal toxicity.
You sound like a Very Caring & Authentic Straight Talking Empathic Dentist. Q: Does this Bio Aversion to Titanium also apply to Spinal Fusion Hardware Too? Or is it that This Accumulation Allergy is Head Centric?
Dr. Michelle, I hope you read my comment. I need several implants. I have foregone dental work, first of all because I can't afford it. But second: I have physical markers for the MTHFR gene mutation although I've never undergone testing. I had a copper IUD (Paragard) put in, in October 2018. I started getting copper toxicity within less than one month. 9 months later I finally got the courage to get it removed (I thought removal would be as painful as insertion) but not before ruining my physical and mental health. Thankfully I'm better now, but I am terrified of putting any metal in my body from here on out. Do you have experience with patients who have MTHFR and/or reacted badly to the copper IUD? Thank you so much. I'm so glad I discovered your video.
Can titanium implants be changed out for zirconia implants after several years? Also, Can one get a zirconia implant right next to a titanium one? Is bone grafting still required the same as with titanium (as far as needing so many mm around the implant?)
Yes it's possible if you have healthy immune system and; life style it's important you change to zerconia because the titanium is not electro magnetic radiation free and now with router wifi n 5g and lte mobile network s being installed you will be a radio active zombie
The issue is that ceramic implants cost like 6k each plus you have to pay for the tooth! How can somebody afford this especially if you need multiple teeth
We are going to need a bunch of super ethical dentist who are already wealthy and just want to provide such services at 1% profit or close to. Philanthropic dentists! 😶💭
I happened to have a food allergy test and tested positive for titanium dioxide. So I got a zirconia implant on one of my back molars. I hope it holds up as well as a titanium implant - I'm afraid of breakage. Another dentist told me it will fail, so I'm a bit freaked out.
Did your insurance cover the zirconia? If not, how much did it cost you? I’m finding many insurances will only cover titanium. I may need an implant for my back molar in the future, and I’m very wary of having metal in my mouth.
@@PartsUnknownn - It was all out of pocket - dental insurance is a rip off, IMO - don't have it. The zirconia wasn't that much more than a normal implant - maybe $200 more or so. With diagnosis, extraction, implant, and crown, I'll be all in for around 7K I think. I still need to get the crown on but I'm in the middle of Invisalign, so have to wait until that is done. The thing that is hard is finding a dentist that will do zirconia -- all I could find were a couple oral surgeons and they wanted absurdly stratospheric prices. And each of them had only done one zirconia each, on the last 5 years. Luckily I found a normal dentist that was interested in doing it - I was his first zirconia patient. He had been doing normal implants for over 20 years so I trusted his expertise - and he was genuinely interested in trying something new, unlike the oral surgeons I consulted with, who made me feel like a number. So far, so good, surgery went well and zirconia has been accepted by my body - but there's still no crown. Mostly just worried about breaking the zirconia in the future, since it's on a molar. But only time will tell.

@8:32 to bolster the case for zirconium dioxide, please cite this research in the description. it would also be interesting to see which european dentists are using zirconium dioxide more and titanium less. finally, statistics on the durability of modern implants would be very helpful.

Ironically just had to have a crown removed above a root canal originally done in 1979 (second time due to decay beneath) and i asked what materials are going to be used . She mentioned zirconia with a ceramic top layer. My question is- how long as this been in place and when did they start using this. I had a crown placed in April 2023 due to decay around an old mercury filling from the 60’s==== was that crown replacement using zirconia then? Will also ask my dentist- this practice i go to was purchased around
@@susanelmendorf8308 so your “mercury” amalgam filling was placed in the 60s and only replaced by a crown in 2023. Be thankful. That’s over 50 years. Your layered Zirconia crown is unlikely to last past 10 years.
FDA first report on Titanium implants came out on 2021. It showed 500,000 implants were done that year and they got 347,000 complaints from patients who received them. That's 75% dissatisfaction rate. This information has recently come to light. Most dentist sell implants as if they are problem free when nothing can be further from the truth. Hopefully Zirconia implants work better than titanium and finding a dentist that will use Zirconia instead of titanium.

Darn. I was going to do zirconium for a molar but I lost the tooth from clenching and I was told the zirconium might fracture. It has cap on it while healing and the gum does appear to moving away from it. I tried calling the manufacturer of titanium and zirconium to ask them and they wouldn’t talk to me. I do have two other titanium implants. One I’ve had for at least fifteen years and the other a couple. I lost two teeth during COVID from clenching.
You also failed to mention that full gold crowns are still by far the best material to use as a crown. Now, they are ugly, so most dentists rarely (if ever) use them, myself included, but everyrthing else is inferior, in terms of dental materials.
I have one gold crown (molar) and it is the only one that has never given me a day of trouble. It's my oldest crown too. Unfortunately, they used to be the cheaper option, now they are the most expensive.
@@M.Campbell yep. It all depends on the price of gold, and it is currently at an all-time high. Nowadays, they are by far the most expensive material, but insurance reimburses the least. It makes no sense at all.
@@xorosho2013 Oh let me clarify, that gold isn't even on my radar for a front tooth. I was referring to back teeth. Although in my 23+yrs as a dentist, I have placed gold crowns in the front, but only when the patient requested them. For me?? that has been maybe 10?? in over 2 decades, so it is very infrequent. But yes, costs are out the roof nowadays.

I have a titanium implant front tooth placed 2018. I detoxed a year ago for heavy metals due to high arsenic and other metals and set off a chain of events that has forever changed my life. I started to have a metal taste and a feeling of metal sensitivity there ever since. It is hard to explain. It's not a pleasant feeling. Thanks for this info.
She said SOME people might be SENSITIVE. I so believe it! Add spray from the skies of aluminum & barium to that! You think you are metal free?? Name one thing that doesn't have at least a TRACE of some metal! I mean even fruit trees! Veggies!!
Implants are NOTHING like real teeth and cause peri-implantitis which results in gum loss, bone loss, and eventually implant loss. Studies have reported a prevalence of up to 22% for peri-implantitis, PI (ranging between 1-47%). A recent retrospective analysis showed that one in five implants showed signs of peri-implantitis PI over time;5 however, Marcantonio et al. (2015)6 suggests a prevalence range of 4.7-43% at implant level and 8.9-56% at patient level.Mar 5, 2024 Keep your real teeth until you have no other choice
But when they have to go.... Tooth pulled got a bridge. Bridge broke. New bridge with root canal. Root canal tooth cracked. So two teeth gone. Implant suggested but too expensive. Longer bridge not viable.
You sold me. Now you just have to get Medicaid to pay for it. Seeing as I need most teeth replaced and cannot afford implants it's likely I'll never get them fixed and it will shorten my life at least degrade the quality of life. If only the rich can afford them, what's the point?
There is something called a removable partial denture. This is what people get when they can't afford implants or even bridges. One piece replaces all the teeth on the same arch simultaneously. No, it's not perfect. You can't afford perfect. But it's better than walking around with missing teeth. People have been wearing these for decades and they do just fine. In many cases, they can be made without metal.
@@MrTrashcan1 I am well aware of dentures and have opted to give then not a second thought. I know too many people with them who have problems I don't wish to have. I am not a second class citizen. @@lauraapotter7911 The designation of zirconia (zirconium dioxide) as a non-metal is somewhat contrived since elementally it is made up primarily of a metal- zirconium. ( 74% Zr, 26% O2 by weight) The “metal free” designation is popular hype but attempts to convey the notion that all metals are toxic or dangerous. Zirconia implants offer very good biocompatibility but have a history of fractures and although new formulations are more promising in this regard more long term studies are necessary before they will supplant titanium based dental implants as the material of choice.

This comment may get negative responses but a male counterpart would not have jumped to that conclusion, at least in my experience 😂
And as a hygienist in multiple private practices over the years, I’ve seen what can only be metal sensitivities in women for decades. Even when the margins or biological width is not an issue, they are on a 3 month recall, biofilms are minimal, redness and inflammation is isolated around gold crowns etc in some individuals. Zirconia has been game changing in my world In my area there are still so many dentist placing amalgams.
Do only women have metal sensitivities? Do you have any knowledge of MTHFR &/or people getting copper poisoning from IUDs?
She recommends zirconia not zirconium
@@Hansen23900 thank you, typo there.
I have a lot of titanium implants in my mouth with no problems but after seeing your video I am wondering if I may have problems as I age. Should I consider have the titanium implants changed to the Zirconia implants?
Hello, what do you think about zirconia crowns?
About to go down the implant journey. Very grateful to find your channel I am in Australia and now looking to find someone who does zirconia implants here. Thank you so much for your clear informative explanation.
Find a Biological Dentist!!!
Hi I'm in Australia too. Laser and Holistic dental in South Yarra, Melbourne offer Zirconia implants. I haven't had any implants but have had other treatment there and highly recommend them. Hope it helps.
@@TT-yn7qi thank you so much really appreciated
Besides Gold.
You sound like a Very Caring & Authentic Straight Talking Empathic Dentist. Q: Does this Bio Aversion to Titanium also apply to Spinal Fusion Hardware Too? Or is it that This Accumulation Allergy is Head Centric?
Question: can this metal sensitivity be tested for?
From my understanding, yes! It's called MELISA, give it a search!
Wow! Everyone should know this!
Love Total Care Dental! They have helped me sooo sooo much!
How do we find your list of dentists?
Thank you for so much valuable information 🙏 it is helping more people than you know ❤
Is there any research in regards to patients with tinnitus? Would zirconia be a better option than titanium?
Besides the overall health benefit of using zirconia implants, My question, are their any price differences that my insurance would not pay?
Zirconium is more and there are fewer dentists that will use them.
Do zirconia implants cost more than titanium ones?
Yes
talk about gold post in a tooth, please do vid! Tooth has root cannal.
Here is your retirement gone
go abroad
what about bone grafting?
Where is your office located , interested
Pleasant Grove, Utah
Possible this dental method is. Affordable, not yet.
We are going to need a bunch of super ethical dentist who are already wealthy and just want to provide such services at 1% profit or close to. Philanthropic dentists! 😶💭
Is it hard to swap out your titanium implant for ceramic?
Not too hard. Titanium is fine though. Up to you.
Tooth fillings can be used zirconia?

I need an implant, I’m going with gold. I have two gold crowns over 30ys old. No one talks about it.
@8:32 to bolster the case for zirconium dioxide, please cite this research in the description. it would also be interesting to see which european dentists are using zirconium dioxide more and titanium less. finally, statistics on the durability of modern implants would be very helpful.
I'm sure those details would be on GOOGLE, why people want other people to do research for them?? She has other things to do, like live for her family, too, not just sit and make sure everything is cited. This is NOT a big corporation.
Zirconium oxide
Yeah, but if zirconia will break at the very bobe flat, how do you extract zirconia screw from the bone?
So what is the side effect of that zirconia chemical to our body?!
@livingwell
Are they getting complaints from previous year’s implants? That would lower the ratio.
That's not what the 2021 FDA report concluded. This seems to be almost entirely made up.
Dr Michelle have you done a video on how to treat a tooth that has a deep hole or extensive decay? It seems that your suggestion is to get an implant or pull the tooth and get a bridge.
Would love to see you do a video on solutions for smokers teeth - what are the options for my friend he wants veneers to correct discoloration and broken front teeth due to improperly placed braces. @livingwellwithdrmichelle
thank you 🙏
Does zirconia eliminate the chance of getting implant disease?
Zirconia is safer. Implant disease is not common.
So did she have to pay for 3 implants?
Oh Michelle, I've been through so much honey, I rather just come over to you and have you do these implants, having a heck of a time finding a decent dds here who does these things and the one I found and put my trust in injured me so badly, worse he didn't even say, I'm sorry for your pain, let's correct it :( Anyway, i'm willing to make a vacation out of it and come to you. where are you???
Same here..about to get one. My oral surgeon suggested titanium bc it is highly stressed area. What did you end up going with?
It makes no sense at all.
well thanks for mentioning it. It is the LEAST desired for front teeth, but....is an option, i guess. And the cost....hmm.....nope.
This video came in just in time
My dentist and are planning to have implants with titanium of course Now I’ll tell her to use zirconia instead
Thank you doctor How old are you by the way? 😉 you look as young as my wife 😂
Good to no thank you❤️‼️
How about titanium and zirconium mix?
I recommend ceramic completely.
How do we find a dentist that does zirconia implants that do not cost $4,500.00 per tooth and this doesn't include $1200-2000 for the bone graph. I read Dick Van Dyke had an implant once that led to severe migraines.. I'm not interested in more metal in my mouth
Thx a lot
I have a titanium implant front tooth placed 2018. I detoxed a year ago for heavy metals due to high arsenic and other metals and set off a chain of events that has forever changed my life. I started to have a metal taste and a feeling of metal sensitivity there ever since. It is hard to explain. It's not a pleasant feeling. Thanks for this info.
Yet she never talked about problems with her own titanium implant other than cosmetic issue? I'm skeptical
Maybe she didn't have a problem with hers yet. Some people don't. There have been enough people having issues and that is enough for me.
She said SOME people might be SENSITIVE. I so believe it! Add spray from the skies of aluminum & barium to that! You think you are metal free?? Name one thing that doesn't have at least a TRACE of some metal! I mean even fruit trees! Veggies!!
im going with you.
(2015)6 suggests a prevalence range of 4.7-43% at implant level and 8.9-56% at patient level.Mar 5, 2024
Keep your real teeth until you have no other choice
But when they have to go.... Tooth pulled got a bridge. Bridge broke. New bridge with root canal. Root canal tooth cracked. So two teeth gone. Implant suggested but too expensive. Longer bridge not viable.
If an implant isn't placed Dentists claim it can lead to bone resorption (bone loss in jaw)
Scary all that money ,😭
Aren’t zirconia implants more prone to fracture?
Sorry, didn’t listen all the way through! Been out of dentistry (assistant for 22 years) for the last 4 years…
I really enjoy your content.
You are correct. They don’t have the success rate of titanium dental implants. I say that as a dentist myself.
@@DrM1107 Had a brilliant dentist in Australia put in the highest standard titanium implant & bone graft, 10 years ago & to this day have no trouble.
But gold is the most biocompatible. Why not mention it.

Especially the government should not be in bed with corupt dental and American medical associations that subvert the best care to ensure they maintain a class structure.
@@DivergentDroid I never said you were a second class citizen. I am a dentist and can't afford what many can. My income was so low that we qualified for an Obamacare subsidy. I drive an old Hyundai Elantra--just so you know, that's an economy car. But where do you think the government gets its money? Yes, it steals it from taxpayers--all taxpayers, not just the wealthy. So do you think it's fair that everyone else should pay for your dentistry?
In this world, you have to be resourceful. Not all dentists are the same, and just because people you know had problems with dentures doesn't mean it will be the same with you. Find an old school dentist with a plain, hole-in-the-wall office (low overhead), down-to-earth, who works on one patient at a time and cares about his patients and the results. No, not easy to find, but we're out there. You have to put in some effort.
@@DivergentDroidSo you’d rather have a bad smile than to get removable partials because you think you’re too good for dentures and deserve to have all expense paid implants? That makes absolutely no sense.
dentist here. She is 100% wrong and full of shit. The meta studies show that titanium has the same biocompatibility as zirconium. Except, titanium has better mechanical and integration properties, so aside from aesthetics, zirconium offers no real advantage over titanium.
She says she is talking about zirconia not zirconium.
I’m going to make a guess that she’ll recommend the most expensive option. Dentistry is a scam!
Sorry to burst your bubble but Zirconium is a metal.
😂😂😂😂REWATCH AGAIN! SHE said ZIRCONI-A it's different form!
Zirconia, not zirconium
So you agree that zirconium is a metal. What about zirconium dioxide?
@@lauraapotter7911 The designation of zirconia (zirconium dioxide) as a non-metal is somewhat contrived since elementally it is made up primarily of a metal- zirconium. ( 74% Zr, 26% O2 by weight) The “metal free” designation is popular hype but attempts to convey the notion that all metals are toxic or dangerous. Zirconia implants offer very good biocompatibility but have a history of fractures and although new formulations are more promising in this regard more long term studies are necessary before they will supplant titanium based dental implants as the material of choice.
Thank you....
Where have you been all my life?
