Love the Bon Iver coverage! If y’all enjoyed this, highly recommend his first album For Emma, Forever Ago. Or even one of his old bands, Deyarmond Edison.
if you want to dive into everything Justin is a part of: Volcano Choir, Deyarmond Edison, Gayngs, Jason Feathers, The Shouting Matches, Big Red Machine ... he has worn many hats over the years lol
Justin Vernon is the main singer. He sings all the songs ever since the band was formed until now. For Emma, Forever Ago is highly recommended! Check it out.
This is so great. Love that you are decoding his words... PLEASE listen to his song 715 Creeks and approach it the same way. It's absolutely poetry. Yall earned my sub 100% peace
I think in the case of the use of the world "sable" you're looking for too literal a meaning of it. Justin Vernon is often very cryptic, and oblique with his lyrics, he'll use words where they don't necessary make sense, he'll just straight up make up words. In this instance I think he has an overall sense of feeling from the word sable that he's using it in rather than any defined way that makes any kind of sense grammatically, here's a piece from a recent interview where he talks about it: Q: *You use it as a noun in “AWARDS SEASON”: “But I’m a sable / and honey, us the fable.” Can you talk a little bit about what the word means to you?* A: It’s such a good question. For years and years, it’s just been there. There’s an outtake from the second record, I think, where I used it in a lyric. I don’t know what it is, but it’s true. I wrote it and I knew it was true, and I still didn’t know what it meant. I was, like, “Be O.K. with that.” But then I looked it up. Sable. Mourning. Deepest black. Also, place name. But what is it? For me, I think when I’m speaking that line, what it refers to is being the darkness. There have been times in my career where it has felt like I’m repeating a cycle of heartache. I was getting a lot of positive feedback for being heartbroken. And I wondered, maybe I’m pressing the bruise. Maybe I’m unknowingly steering this ship into the rocks over and over again, because . . . you know, I’m not, like, famous-on-the-street, People-magazine famous. But there have been a lot of accolades for me and my heartache. So it’s me asking the question: I’m a sable, I’ve been a sable. Am I repeating this cycle of sorrow? Or is this just how sorrow goes, and this is how everyone feels? That’s kind of what it means to me.

Thanks for doing such an in-depth review. As a longtime Bon Iver fan it's a lot of fun for me to see creators like you bringing new audiences his way.
He is the main artist and singer in the band. He has a huge range in his voice.

Amazing reaction and an even better analysis. Subbed
I also read the "all that comes in grey" line as meaning that this couple were preparing to face old age together-- as people age and grey.
3:09 Yeah this is all Justin here in that rare lower register
you guys rule

It's always Justin Vernon doing the main vocals, every other contribution is for the backvocals
It's simple to call your ex the villain... wow. 🤯
