Honestly that’s something that I don’t like because as a beginner I won’t be using all the different ways so it just fluids my brain with info and confuses me
@@dimaisatree you are not suppose to use everything, i mean you can save the video and take only 1 of the methods he mentions to do only 1 thing, and then on a different occasion you would be looking for something else, lets say something more advanced so little by little you will be using every method he mentioned i don't know that's the way i saw it
Really? I found it tedious having to sit through "Here's one simple way to do it, but here's 2 other ways you can do it that take more steps for the EXACT SAME result... it doesn't really matter either way"
Bringing in people's questions and answering them with context and additional information on Blender is **chefs kiss** 10/10 teaching moment, love learning things I didn't even intend to
You have no idea how many times I've tried over and over to model a character and absolutely failed. Turns out the answer was right in front of me. Thank you so much for this!
This is one of THE best blender tutorials Ive found. Most people dont explain the WHY behind what their doing, so I end up feeling like im trying to remember steps that I dont really know what they do in the first place
You know, I had other plans for the evening, but I just spent last two hours modeling with skin modifier. It's super fun! Thanks you for the video, you are great at explaining stuff.
I can't even begin to explain how awesome this is. It's like you created an entire system of avatar creation except it's just using basic, native blender features. Like as if this is a character creation program outside Blender, but you can still use all the other tools on the same model if you wanted to.
"Looks like a Pixar Mom." Dead. Really great tutorial. This looked like sculpting from the thumbnail but I can extrude and scale with the best of them!
Just an FYI for anyone who is having trouble with both sides not working according to the armature and still has the issue of bending both sides skins: I applied everything including the armature, and then separately added the object to the armature with automatic weights by selecting the object then the armature, pressing ctrl P and applying auto weights. Hope this helps anyone who ran into this issue!
This is a great way of creating characters, not only is it really quick and easy but the topology is really good too by default which can save you hours. Just want to say special thanks for pointing out the "only connected" option in the proportional editing dropdown, that's gonna help me a lot. Also thanks for the random amogus popping up at times lol
Working on a game in Unreal and wanted to make my own assets. I've been working on my character movement with a capsule mesh and now that I'm wrapping up that process I thought I'd start learning blender and make my character. This is by far the best tutorial I've come across. It not only shows the steps to make a character, but also provides the knowledge necessary to customize it and really allows you to explode in creativity. Any small details you want to include more than likely can be implemented with this tutorial alone. Subbed!
Thanks to your previous video, I built a ton of characters with this technique in no time for my game. As a developer with only one other fellow to help me sometimes, I need time cutting methods, taught intelligently, to stay afloat. Your videos fit the bill, and I really appreciate this one..well, the previous one, I'm only about to start this one today with my design partner. Thx!
This is the best tutorial I've ever seen. He demonstrates and explains exactly what's going on while responding to comments by solving problems that people run into when creating. Thank you so much!!
ikr, i didn't know how to extrude outside of the XYZ axes for years and him just responding to the comment and dropping the tip "yeah just press g twice and then hold alt" i would have NEVER figured that out!!! - and now it feels like I FINALLY can work outside of the default 3 directions. responding to comments is such a good way to teach, i've honestly not seen that in most videos before
Easily becoming my favorite with this style of teaching! Tutorials like these, where they don't baby your every steps and show multiple directions that you could take with the model, is just brilliantly made! I've found two channels so far that does this.
Not going to lie, this is the best tutorial I've come across for quick and easy character modelling. As a beginner with blender, definitely got confused with a lot, but this tutorial is amazing and totally beginner friendly
This is the BEST way I've found to start a character. You still need to know the "normal" methods, but this will get you started FAST. THANK YOU soooo much, Joey.
I've come back to this tutorial every time I've restarted my Blender learning, it's by far the most helpful for quick character models and love your teaching style. Thank you very much for making this!
I love how you explain what you're doing and showing where to click while saying what you are clicking on. I'm new to Blender and with many tutorials it's really hard to see or hear what's being done usually because they are too fast, or they miss steps assuming a beginner already knows what to do.
The video is in itself awesome but I have to tell you, popping comments and answering them is one hell of a way to make the tuts engaging and relevant and awesome!!! I don't know how many are doing it but I've seen you do it first!!!
Hands down the best simple tutorial i've seen in a long time. Usually people that are good just do things without realizing it's not that simple, but you show why each step is important and other options to get around that particular issue. Amazing!
Honestly, I was about to give up all hope on blender because a lot of tutorials lack in depth teachings. Blender Guru was the only person I was able to neatly follow along with and make something, but honestly, this was amazing. I was just wanna let you know that your teachings are so clear and it really seems like you don't skip any steps. Thank you so much for this!
Man.... this is a game changer for me, honestly..... thank you SO much. Using this method i've been able to start making the kind of characters i've always wanted to make, but just always got stuck as they didn't turn out right for one reason or another. Using this method just seems to resonate with my brain much more though and i'm totally glad i found this video!. Thankyou!
I think I'm repeating myself from another of your videos comments but even only 4 minutes in I'm blown away by just how many shortcuts and options you explain here and it's *really* appreciated.
I made a high poly Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle with this method. Awesome info, it was super fast and only took me 3.5 hours from a single vector to a final render version with textures.
Thank you for this brother, that initial motivation "If you can draw a stickman, you can model a character" shows you actually want to help people to improve which is beautiful, keep going you're brilliant!!!
Lit!!! I've been wanting to get into character sculpting in blender for a while but haven't dived into topology because it looks daunting when it's time for retopology. And normal box modeling it sooo time consuming. But this looks like a happy medium. Thank you! Any plans on clothing tutorials to add on to character sculpts? Boots? Jackets/hoodies? Hats?
I have one character modeling video where I make a character with clothes, but they are pretty simple. Some things like that, I make videos on them as I'm experimenting and learning.
I tried a lot of times to model a character with a lot of tutorials and failed over and over, your video in the other hand helped me making a character almost as perfect as i had in mind, thank you so much
That was really impressive and simple! Great work! I'm honestly shocked at how much you can do with this setup and how much variation and customization you can get!
i loved the way you teach even little little basic things which refreshes mind too... i am glad u r considering total beginners too... other youtubers dont explain things in this much detail
Hello! This tutorial is so helpful, I’m a blender noobie and have tried to follow lots of tutorials before but they’ve all been too complicated and fast for me to understand but your teaching pace is fantastic! Do you have a tutorial on making clothes for the character models? Like a cape or a shirt that goes all the way around the model? I am a little bit stuck in that area haha, thank you so much! ❤️
My god man, your videos are so good at teaching, you don’t miss a step, you explain everything and you do it fast, not over complicating anything and making sure everyone is able to keep up no matter their skill level, I’ve only used blender on the odd occasion but now I feel far my confident after just watching a few of your videos! Definitely the channels I’d recommend to anyone looking to learn blender
This is fantastic. I usually spent HOURS to make the most basic low-poly model to be able to build it up from there, and sculpting is not my strongest side.... great vid! Straight to the point, nice explanation of what it does, good visual showcase of the modifier and what can be done. Now time to use it hehehe...
This, as well as your modeling and nodes tutorials, have been some of the best free online content I've found up to date! You explain things clearly, give multiple ways of doing the same thing and most importantly - explain the WHY behind the WHAT/HOW! Keep up the amazing work!

Thanks for the update. The first skin modifier tutorial you made was a game changer. I am really looking forward to some character tutorials, especially if you get into some sculpting after skin-mod (there's been a lot of beginner-level box modelling character creation tuts going around and it's getting a little repetitive). Question: Why do you do the shading with the palette? What is your opposition to making separate materials?
I use multiple materials all the time, I mainly use the palette for when I just want to change the color, it's good for making things fast. If you don't want entire faces to be a solid color, the using the palette isn't the best option
I watch your videos the most I just love the way you teach, it's really easy to understand and your voice is pleasant to hear when you explain carfully.
So for anyone else that had this weird problem that I had, if by chance you see this, I might be able to fix this for you. I had this weird error by the point of trying to move my armature that the poses would work ALMOST perfectly, but for some reason certain bits would be left behind. Specifically if I tried to move the arms, it was like it would leave two dimensional shreds of my mesh behind while moving everything else perfectly. After I milled around for a bit trying to find a solution to this problem, I eventually just tried this, and it worked. 1. Select your mesh again 2. Shift select your armature again 3. Parent with automatic weights again For whatever reason, that made it to where I no longer experienced the issue. I don't know what it did, but now everything works normally, so I'm not complaining. I figured I should share that information just in case anyone else had this problem. Good luck with your projects everyone!
Fantastic video Joey. You are incredibly concise with your explainations, but you don't miss out any information. I have been stuck on making a goblin model for my next game, and I have taken so much away from this video, that i might be able to do it. Thank you so much for this! Amazing stuf.

Thank you very much for your content, in fact you have my like, bell and subscription. Once again, thank you!"
I have a hard time making none humanoid characters with this method, probably because not all vertices are on the same z plane, can you give me some help, thanks in advance.
Blender amazes (and often confuses) me. I have been looking at modelling and retopologizing vids, looking into rigging etc. This whole work flow contained almost ALL new approaches. I imagine I'll adopt a hybrid approach to some of these tips but the I was amazed all the way through this video with no LESS amazment when I saw your very clever use of the palette UV map with the incredibly useful colour selection method. YOur geo node vids are just as cool though I am still too early stages to understand WHAT to do next at every GEO node step. I need a better mental map/list of what each of the nodes might actually be useful for WITH examples that I can see their effects on down a complex chain. Thanks for your inspirational stuff.
I truly appreciate your tutorial. For my first time I made a cartoon figure I'm happy to save and share. If I can get some money, I'll support your tutorials. Thank you.
I've learned a lot more in this video than I have the other blender tutorials I have watched combined. This was the first video I've seen from Joey Carlino but I can't wait to watch your other videos!
This is a life saver I'm a noobie and I watched a video on animation and the guy used the skin modifier and i didn't know how to use it so you helped me alot

the best tutorial about character modeling in YT!
"If you can draw a stick figure then you can model a character."
Ok, I'm out.
I should have said,
"If you can leave a comment, you can model a character"
@@JoeyCarlino among us?
Bye bye
by tutorials like this we end up seeing badly modeled characters badly rigged, ugly
@@pay2000 as a newbie to blender, can you please elaborate why?
the most useful blender tutorial i have ever seen . thank you for all
I have a hard time making none humanoid characters with this method, probably because not all vertices are on the same z plane, can you give me some help, thanks in advance.

I've found this to be a very effective and easy workflow, thank you.
This is one of the best quick, but informative videos out there for this type of work!
This is a life saver I'm a noobie and I watched a video on animation and the guy used the skin modifier and i didn't know how to use it so you helped me alot

I forgot all about skin modifier. I abandoned it years ago. This version of skin modifier seems improved. I will try it today.

Something out of this world. The characters are also out of this world too
