    This tutorial is a GODSEND. I was looking into stylized low-poly for months now, and the best I could find was "PS1 style", which is totally not my jam! But this, this is literally donut of character creation, this is GOAT of tutorials

    • @music_shev_
      @music_shev_ 4 місяці тому +5

      @PAPicturesOfficial Naaah, PS1 style is stylized in a different way, and usually does not feature 1k textures or jointed limbs. Visuals of an era are usually dictated by big games, and big games usually pivot towards realism, and realism + hardware limitations makes for great visuals, but not insanely dope cartoon-ish visuals that I was looking for. This is more of a N64 but simplified, properly saturated and coloured tutorial, than PS1 tutorial, if we're talking consoles and not eras

      @PRINTORO It actually makes the process more difficult, because it makes your process similar to trying to draw a picture with one stroke, versus multiple strokes.

    UV unwrapping and specifically textute painting was always such a headache for whenever I'd attempt to make a low poly character. You are a saint for this tutorial 🙏🙏🙏

  • @MyNameIsGarp
    @MyNameIsGarp 2 місяці тому +14

    I love the early stages of learning. Following along with this video, I picked up enough basic knowledge to look at other blender videos and go "oh, I have some idea of what they're doing and how they're doing it." Not much, but some.
    It's like learning the grammar and first few words of a foreign language, and realizing you're now able to pick up MORE of it just by listening to it.
    Thank you friend!

  • @blackmark2899
    @blackmark2899 6 місяців тому +55

    Low Poly style is really good because it's a lot like making a chibi. You have design what's the essentials of the character and doesn't allow you to get lost in the details.

    • @lelagrangeeffectphysics4120
      @lelagrangeeffectphysics4120 5 місяців тому +6

      Pixel art/Low Poly/Chibi all focus on a simple silhoute, generally dont need very complicated details and rely on focus points(2-3 defining trais of a character, like glasses, a ribbon, perhaps a piece of armour or two).

    • @metacob
      @metacob 2 місяці тому

      In the past I thought pixel style would be good for a solo developer who doesn't have a ton of experience with drawing. I was wrong, good pixel style is lots of work. Low poly style on the other hand works much better! The more you boil it down, the better it looks.

  • @metacob

    I just finished my first character in Blender (turned out much better than I expected) and now following along with this tutorial it all seems very doable! I can't believe I wasted so much time thinking this was so difficult or that I needed lots of talent in design/art. Low poly art rocks! Somehow when you reduce a shape to its basics it looks 10x better than a high-poly model made by someone who doesn't know what to do with all the details (like me).

    • @MyNameIsGarp
      @MyNameIsGarp 2 місяці тому +1

      Miziziziz has a great video on "style by necessity," in which he explores the idea that devs often arrive at interesting visuals not in spite of their limitations but, in a roundabout way, BECAUSE of them. It's very cool, and gives hope to folks who aren't CalArts grads or natural talents (like myself)

  • @sicariusleif1992
    @sicariusleif1992 6 місяців тому +48

    It took roughly 7 hours as a beginner to make this while following along. I was initially thrilled because your approach resonated with my goals for character design. However, it's crucial to clarify that the video isn't precisely a tutorial.
    My primary aim in watching was to grasp texture painting and UV mapping, so it was disheartening when, after finally completing the model, the video suddenly sped up, leaving me feeling left behind. This feedback is simply meant to be constructive; since there's no mention in the video that it's a tutorial, it's not your fault. However, the initial portion does give the impression that new users can easily follow along, which only adds to the frustration after investing hours.
    Despite these challenges, I managed to keep up fairly well, even resorting to slowing down the video to 0.25x speed during the UV mapping segment (such difficulties added significant time to completing the piece). I was really hoping for a demonstration of how to pose the model as well.
    Anyway, great art and thank you for posting the video!

    This tutorial is incredible. I can't tell you how many low poly tutorials i've watched and thought "yeah this is low-poly, but it isn't quite the image I had in mind." until I found this video. Your reference character is super cute and I love how simple and straightforward your modeling process was. Sometimes I stress out and overcomplicate things thinking that if I don't do it then it won't look good with textures, so seeing it done right helped me visualize so much. Thank you so much.

    Instead of manually merging each vertex pair, it is faster to enable auto-merge vertices and enable vertex snapping (the ruler-looking dropdown next to the magnet at the top of the screen). Then you can just snap each vertex to the desired target vertex and they'll automatically merge together.

    This video should be at the top of the search results so that Blender beginners like me can find it easily and not waste time searching. This is the only one I found that answers the question of why texture painting appears darker in the viewport. And... most videos in Tube seem to assume we have experience with texture painting, even if they are intended for "beginners". This even single video contains most essential tips and information that we should know. Subscribed!

    I wasn't even aware this only came out like a few days ago but it came at such a good time!!! I had a sudden motivation in trying to make a 3D model and this tutorial made it feel so much easier to tackle what I envisioned doing for such a long time now and I feel like I want to do even more now :D Thanks you so much for making this!

    this tutorial just makes so much sense!! a lot on tutorials just go onto things that are waaay to complex for the simple characters i want to create

    this is a pretty good tutorial for all the steps necessary, but the thing i found myself struggling with is the amount of small adjustments you did in the model creation part, it was hard to follow because i didnt know whether it was necessary to do these small adjustments because i barely knew what they did. Also the loop circle tool is broken in blender 4.0, idk why it really doesnt look the same in the video
    Good tutorial overall though!
