  • Here is one mouth watering chinese cooking that you might like. Shanghai cooking with pork belly, braising into perfection with soy sauce and rock sugar. Excellent with steamed rice for delicious meal. Very popular in Shanghai and Singapore, including southeast Asian countries. Easy to make . Why not make some soon & enjoy.

    List of Ingredients: **created by HAPPY WOK **
    2 pounds pork belly, boneless with skin
    * for blanching*
    6 cups water
    ¼ cup rice cooking wine
    5 slices ginger
    3 stalks green onions
    **for braising **
    3 Tbs. peanut cooking oil
    3 Tbs. rock sugar
    2 Tbs. rice cooking wine
    3 Tbs. light soy sauce
    3 cups water
    5 slices ginger
    3 stalks green onion
    ** bag of spices **
    3 star anise
    3 bay leaves
    1 cinnamon bark
    6 white cardamon
    * also for garnishing*
    1 Tbs. chopped green onions

      Yes, it was. But loaded with cholesterol. So we ate this type of food moderately. ( So tasty that lot of Asian like it. )

      @@HAPPYWOK I am in the camp that without cholesterol we would die and there's good cholesterol and bad cholesterol.....the real culprit in heart disease is anything that causes inflammation.(such as refined sugar and starch)......the inflammation causes tears in our arteries which in turn makes cholesterol fix the tear and therefore clog arteries.....cholesterol = good....inflammation = bad.....our ancestors survived and prospered eating fatty meat!

    Very nice dish Chef. I can't eat pork belly cuz of the fat as I need to avoid it. I can't even eat beacon. But what amazes me about this dish, is the color when you add the soy sauce. Have you ever tried it with dark soy sauce? As for me, I ate a lot of leftovers earlier this week but did make beef snowpeas with mushrooms in hoisin sauce. I made it earlier in the day so I can have it at dinner time. I went to wash my hands and after returning into the kitchen, my girlfriend helped herself to the dish. She smiled as she couldn't resist so I told her she could have another small serving. Thought I'd share that. My next dish this weekend will likely be the flat green beans I picked up at Centra. I'll see what I can blend in with. Oh btw, I noticed your kitchen looked different. Moved to a new home? Renovation? See you next time Chef.

      I do minimized fatty food intake too, due to their high cholesterol contain. Dark soy sauce cause the meat color to be much darker, some like it but not me. LOL.. Your cooking must be very tasty that the aromatic good smell cause your Girl friend to help herself, LOL. Yes, we move to another apartment so the kitchen table looks different now.       You can make it with skin on deboned pork shoulder too, not the same as pork belly but it works.
