DIY Kamado BBQ grill - from Flowerpots

  • In this video I show you how I made a Kamado BBQ from flowerpots.
A Kamado is a traditional Japanese wood- or charcoal-fueled cook stove.
Nowadays they are really popular, there are many brands like The Green Egg, Joe, Yakiniku, etc.
I decided to try to make one myself using flowerpots and some other materials like heat gasket, a thermometer, some steal en heat proof paint.
It worked surprisingly well. The BBQ is very easy to control and the food turns out super yummy.
Lazy to make one yourself? Shop a grill here:

🙏 Thank you all for your nice comments and questions. I really appreciate that. Here are some answers to the most asked questions:
    • Some people claim that clay pots can contain metals, like lead. My terracotta pots are unglazed pots and made in Italy. From what I know they don’t contain any lead. But please do your research to make sure you use the right pots.
    • The gasket is a special heat proof gasket for grills. Not rubber or plastic
    • The paint is heat proof too and I only applied it on the outside of the grill.
    • Before I used the grill I fired it up for a couple of hours to let all the bad gasses (if they where there) evaporate.
    • I always heat up the grill slowly to avoid a sudden rise in temperature and try to prevent it from cracking. So far it didn’t crack from the heat. I got a small crack from tightening one of the nuts too tight. But I fixed that and the pot is air tight.
    • The hinge is bought in a local grill shop as a spare part for kamado grills.
    • This project was just for fun, I know that a flowerpot can not be compared to your expensive Kamado grill. Tough im still enjoying the juicy food from it.
    • I did some simple burgers as a first test because after the build I wanted to test the grill quickly. Later on I tried things like pork belly etc.
    • I try to keep the grille under 300 to 350 degrees Celsius. Because you know, they’re still flowerpots. Most of the time I bbq around 250/300 C. The venting holes can control the temperature.
    • The pits are just for decoration purpose. I wanted to make it look less like a flowerpot.
Use your common sense and only do or make things you feel comfortable with. But most of all; enjoy your life! Peace ✌️

For those making one, use a masonry\carbide drill bit or you will ruin your bits. Also can soak the terracotta pot overnight to make it easier. Will also reduce risk of cracking.

Here are a couple of tips that make assembly slightly easier ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxCx5fHawkK9OoV-ojFrY8JLnZrFwAmvUt . 1) One person can assemble, but if you have a buddy to help, it will make it go faster - especially steps 1-3 and 8 (the legs aren't heavy but can be difficult to hold while screwing things in). Step 8, 1st part will take some time unless you have two more hands OR are really lucky. 2) Use a socket wrench! 3) Step 7, 3rd part - the flame carry over tube has an open side, MAKE SURE THE OPEN SIDE IS FACING THE FRONT. If it's facing the back, the tube won't work. 4) Step 10, 3rd part - if you don't have small hands (I don't, they're gigantic) getting the nut on is really difficult (but not impossible). It took me about 4 hours to assemble, but I took a "union break" every 60-90 minutes and ate a quick lunch. Also, I'm really OCD so I took my time, looked at the instructions carefully, and cleaned up as I went.

    Fantastic video.
All I could suggest is that the finished Kamado grill is highly likely to crack if you put charcoal or briquettes the very first time you use it, as the terracotta would not have been seasoned.
To season it (the same way you would do with a Chimenea), you would need to put a bit of sand at the bottom, then build a small fire out of a fire starter (newspaper) and allow it to die down and fully cool down.
Then build another fire out of kindle and do the same.
Finally, do another one with a single log and do the same.
You'd need to allow one or two days altogether.
(I think you got lucky it didn't crack)

    • @federicomarzocchi7169
      @federicomarzocchi7169 9 місяців тому +3

@@eyesofthecervino3366 It cracks because of the presence of bubbles of air and droplets of water in the matrix of the terracotta structure.
you can prevent the cracking by increasing slowly the temperature, doing this the matrix has time to dissipate the stress generated by the variation of the volume of air and water droplets.
you can do it burning a small fire into the kamado or you can also put the pot into the oven at low temp for some hours.
you can also put all the pot in water before doing all this steps, this also help because it reduces the thermal shock

One huge No No is using foam sealant strip that will definitely give off toxic gasses inside your BBQ. Hope spray paint was High Temperature Paint or it will give off toxic gasses to anyone hanging around BBQ when cooking. Otherwise , good job.

    • @BobBee

The gasket is no foam, it’s special gasket for grills. And the paint is only on the outside, heatproof and burned for a while without food. So no gasses left behind . Food taste good
