Agreed, good beginner project but not amazing.
Also: Google Plus is no more, you can stop putting that link in your descriptions.
Most Importantly: You'd be better off using a common anode LED and putting your loads in the collector circuit rather than using common cathode and putting the LEDs in the emitter circuit. To turn the transistor on, you need to forward bias the base-emitter junction. If you put several LEDs in series, the 3.3v output of the GPIO pin will no longer be enough to turn your transistor on. There is a reason you only very rarely see NPN transistors with their switched load in the emitter circuit. If your objective is to teach, don't teach this configuration. Use common anode LEDs.

Use a 1k Ohm resistor between the digital pin and the base of the NPN Transistor..... Connecting directly to the base may result a momentarily high current spike from digital pin to ground which may permanently damage the digital pin..
