My mother tried to teach me English throwing, which is how she did it. I knit so tightly that I gave up and went back to crochet. My sister came home from college and said wait till you see what I learned! She taught me Continental and I loved it. I think I was 16 or 18 so that was about 50 years ago. I was more of a product knitter when I was young. Now I may take a year or more to complete a very intricate lace shawl and always have a variety of projects to work on. I enjoy your podcasts. Would like to know more about your job. Thanks.

Thank-you for sharing Nancy. I remember also knitting sooooo tightly when I first started knitting...each stitch was literally a struggle 😂 I've no idea how it happened but when I finally picked up my needles again in 2017, my gauge was so much looser and seems to have stayed that way. Definitely much more enjoyable now 😊
I too have grown to appreciate longer-term projects. I envy your ability to do intricate lace patterns. I am working on my first all-over lace sweater and find myself making so many mistakes, although I absolutely love the process and the way it looks (from afar 🤣).
I'll try to remember to talk a little bit about my job next episode 🥰

Thanks for your lovely company Nikki 💗 I very much enjoyed the chipmunk cameos around the 43 minute mark!
It was really interesting to hear the results of last episode’s comments 🤓 I was taught to knit as an English style thrower and continued that way until about 3.5yrs ago, when I switched to flicking. There was something about the way I handled the yarn that created a twist…the constant untwisting of the working yarn was driving me bonkers so I adopted flicking, which sorted the problem 🥳 For colourwork I hold the contrast colour in my left hand and work it in a continental style. I initially dropped and picked up the yarn as you do, but when I moved to flicking two hands seemed easier.

Love your Chestnut card! I am a Norwegian continental knitter. When I do color work I use both hands, throw with the right and pick with the left. if knitting color work flat I use the German continental purl in the left hand and english in the right. If doing corrugated ribbing I purl with the right hand english and knit with the left hand continental. If 3 colors are used in a round I hold the two pattern colors in the left hand and the background color in the right hand. Whew, that's a lot of info! Thanks for your podcast, I really enjoy the content!

I am a Continental knitter wether I knit with one strand or two strands. I will always hold my yarn in the left hand. And I like you I couldn’t believe that there should be so many different knitting styles in the world 😂 With time I learned that when I work in the round I knit Western European and purl Eastern. When I work flat I will knit and purl both Eastern European. This is how I learned it from my mother and my grandmother.

Your Chestnut is gorgeous, your Samphrey will be gorgeous, and those raccoons are too cute. (Until, that is, they do things like cozying up under an outdoor chair cover because the cushion underneath is very comfy!) I am an English thrower, and pick up and drop my colours as needed, and I am comfortable doing that now that I have accepted that there is no right and wrong way to knit. I am so glad that you are now also saying the millimetre needle sizes; I relate to that, so thank you. You have monarch caterpillars! I look at my milkweed regularly but have not yet seen caterpillars.

Hello. I just found you and enjoyed watching. I'm an English style, throwing knitter too. I did change the way I tension my yarn (now around my little finger) instead of dropping it completely. Greetings from Laval, Québec
This was my first time watching your podcast and I will be coming back for more.
Your question about knitting style made me think.
I'm left handed and I learned by watching my mom knit (she was an English knitter). I initially knit with straight needles and I used to hold one needle under my right armpit and keep it pretty much immobile while I would do all my motions with my left hand/needle and I got quite proficient with that system. I didn't know it at the time, but I later learned that it was called Scottish style.
When I started using DPNs and circular needles I had to adapt my style for obvious reasons. Since I was already flicking my yarn with my right hand, that continued and so I became an English flicker! When I did color work, I initially held both yarns with my right hand, but sometimes I got them so entangled, it wasn't funny. So after watching some videos on UA-cam, I started holding them with both hands and it's much better. So that made me a combination knitter. What is ironic about this is that while I can knit with a yarn on my left hand, I can only do so if I also have one on my right. I tried Continental knitting on its own (with cotton yarn to make washcloth) and it's just not happening !
So now, I would call myself a Heinz knitter - 57 varieties of style all jumbled into one!
Your Chestnut is stunning ! It's been in one of my "favorite" bundles on Ravelry for a while and I have every intention of making it in this lifetime. Hearing about your experience makes it this much more approachable.
Thank you for taking the time to make your podcasts and for sharing your love of the craft with the universe.

I’m a continental knitter with a “twist” : I purl eastern european style witch is more comfortable at more quick than classic continental purling. For colourwork I put simply the two yarns on my left hand finger. Sometimes I use a colourwork ring for helping to keep the distance between the two strands.

I am a continental knitter. I started out as a crocheted and taught myself to knit. I was like you. I had no idea there was any other way to knit for a long time. I knit color-work by holding both yarns on my left forefinger and just pick whichever color I need for each stitch. I love watching other people knit. In my mind I’m thinking,”Wow! I knit continental and a picker. Im also left handed. I knit left to right. Charts also start left to right for me.usually I have to read thru patterns as most k2tog and ssk are swapped for left/right leaning stitches as I’m coming from the other side. Knit x amount then begin left such n such is my right such n such. So while I hold my yarn in my right hand, my left needle does all the work. (Multicraftyguy is the only other knitter I’ve come across that knits like me) im just finishing a gift ranunculus for a good friend, love your summer version! Beautiful colorwork!

I just love the Chestnut cardigan. I think it is the color combination that makes it so popular. I am a self taught english thrower most comfortably. I also enjoy norwegian style. My fingers and hands suffer terribly with flicking or continental. I believe it has much to do with the length and joint shape of your fingers. We are all built a little differently.

  • @MagdaKnits

Your Chestnut is stunning!!! Now I want to knit one too! 😂I'm a continental knitter, but when I do colourwork I use both hands, so I'm continental on the left, but throwing the yarn on the right. I do admit though that my continental knitting is a bit "weird" and I have seen thousands of knitting videos in my lifetime and yet I have never seen anyone knit the same way as I do lol. I like to blame it on the fact that I'm a leftie, so I tend to do most manual things differently 😆But like you said - it doesn't matter, we're all different and there is no right or wrong! I loved seeing the little critters running behind you and I hope you get plenty of butterflies soon 😊 The butterflies numbers have been really low in UK for the last two years and I can see the difference in my garden. We have a big flowering bush, which was completely swarmed with butterflies when we moved here two years ago, but last year and this year there were hardly any ☹It's really worrying to see wildlife in decline and it all seems to be going in the wrong direction.

I am a continental knitter, and for colourwork, I cheat and wear a ring that separates the 2 yarns. Recommended to me by Selma of Little Big Knits. We too love our birds and try to provide them with fountains, birdbaths and yummy food. We love monarchs, and are planning on getting a butterfly bush. We had one years ago, and at its peak my husband counted over 50 monarchs on it. I also like the idea of growing milkweed for them. I'd just be afraid the catterpillars would be discovered by robins, and goodbye future butterfly, 😅

Thanks for sharing your knitting style Marg. I've been intrigued by knitting rings, but I just don't think it would work for my own knitting style. Sounds like you have quite the little wildlife oasis 🤗 Oh I don't think you have to worry about the monarch caterpillars getting eaten by robins etc. for as they feed on the milkweed (which is poisonous to most species) and plump up, they themselves become poisonous hence why they actually have few predators. 🤗💕

Hi! About knitting stiles: I learned knitting English stile but I wanted to learn continental stile and I love knitting stockinette that way and purling continental is also something I practiced but if there is a lot of purls I switch back to English stile and when I knit colourwork I use both stiles together. Continental gives a looser gauge for me but that’s ok.. happy knitting to you too….

I knit continental style and like you I did not know any other way until a few years ago. When doing colorwork I have two strands on my left finger and pick the one I need. That way there is no dominant colour. When purling colorwork I go behind both strings and pick the strand I need.

I love everything you showed in this episode. Chestnut just stunning, well done! So glad that I bought the kit! I use English throwing all the time except knit with two colours as I found that it is easier to control the dominant and non dominant colours. However when purl colour works, I am back to English style, because not only that I don’t know how to purl in continental but also I found my tension is more accurate when doing this way. You are right that there is no wrong or right way, just whatever is work for us😄. I am so looking forward to see the progress on your Samphrey and Daffodil🤩

Your Chestnut turned out beautifully!!! Well done! I'm working on a Fair Isle cardigan too, but it has lingered in the shadows for quite some time... This may be the inspiration I need :-) A quick question about your Daffodil from before, do you knit with one or two strands of the Holst? Have been eyeing the pattern for a while. As for knitting style, I knit continental style, but with Fair Isle I knit with one strand in each hand. Enjoy your footage of caterpillars and all the adorable animals - I live on the countryside and do some beekeeping, so it's always fun to watch :-)

Thank-you so much for the kind words! 🥰 And for sharing your knitting style 😊 Regarding your question about my Daffodil, I'm only using a single strand of the Holst Supersoft on US 2 (2.75 mm) needles and my gauge is still looser than the pattern gauge 😂 I see you also have a podcast--looking forward to watching it! 🤗💕

Your Chestnut is just stunning! I'm tempted to try a Marie Wallin pattern (probably not one this intense), but her British Breeds yarn is a little beyond my knitting budget right now (it will be recovering from my Rhinebeck trip for a while!). I have a lot of Knit Picks Palette in my stash -- any idea how it would substitute? I'll look on Ravelry project pages, too. I like Palette but recognize that it's not a fancy yarn.

Thank-you so much for the kind words 😊 I totally hear you on the British Breeds front--that was a one-time endeavour for me (unless I win the lottery) 😂 Unfortunately I haven't used Knit Picks Palette before so I can't really comment on the comparison but I know I've definitely heard of others using it for colourwork so I think you should totally give it a go! Maybe try it with a smaller project first to see how you like it? Do let me know which project you end up casting on when you get around to it! Happy Making 🤗💕

Hi Nikki, Your cardigan looks awesome. It was worth every minute you spent on it. Did you have a lot of yarn left? As for knitting style, I am an "ambidextrous" knitter. There are some things, like knitting in the round on circular needles, that I do continental style, and others, like lace or using DPNs that I do English style (and I'm a flicker). My continental knitting is a lot looser so when I want something knit tighter, like the heel of a sock, I'll switch to English style. I recently taught myself Norwegian purling and have all but eliminated rowing out. Since I'm a self-thaught knitter, I guess I don't have an allegiance to one or another style. :-) And I do colourwork with one strand in each hand.

Thank-you Dominique 🥰 I did in fact have quite a bit of leftovers although I ran out 2 colours and had to order more. Being able to switch up your knitting style sounds super helpful! Thanks for sharing! 🤗💕

Greetings from Sydney Australia. Im Barbara Radzevicius Bondi Crafter on you tube. I'm knitting Marie Wallins YELL cardigan, its nearly finished and I have ROLLING on the hem and especially on the button band. Will it block straight. I'm so stressed about it. Its made in the round with steeking. I shortened my sleeves as they would have been way to long. I'm not sure about knitting Colourwork flat. Well done.

Hi Barbara 👋 I have not knit Yell myself but I've heard there have been some issues with rolling. I think Maggie of the Sonder Knitting Podcast spoke about how she avoided this issue in her latest episode. Good Luck! 🤞

Hi Tanis. The link is right at the bottom of the show notes/desription for this video. You may need to click the little "v" to see the notes as well as "...more" to view them all. In case you still have trouble, the name of the shop on Etsy is "VintageButtonStore". Hope this helps 😊

Hi Nikki, found this video through your Instagram account. Watched this episode last night and really enjoyed it. Your Chestnut cardigan is beautiful; I'm planning to knit this one too and have the yarn ready. You did a great job. It was interesting to hear about the relationship between process knitters and non monogamist knitters. I think I'm like you, I'm somewhere in between. I love the process a lot but also love having a great and wearable garment in the end. Beautiful scenery as well with the little rodents running around in the background. What are they? I'm a Flicker. I have my own podcast here on UA-cam, but early days for me. Check it out if you're interested. Wonderful World of Knitting. Looking forward to seeing more from you. Cathleen

Thank-you very much Cathleen 🥰 I think you will enjoy knitting the Chestnut. Thanks for sharing your knitting style! The little critters running around were chipmunks. I regularly put out sunflower seeds so the chipmunks, squirrels and birds often visit. I just love wildlife 🤗 I'll be sure and check out your podcast 💕
