I'm currently knitting the Goldwing and loving it! Lovely to find another Canadian knittuber

Thank-you so much for stopping by 🥰 The Goldwing is a beautiful pattern. I've just re-cast it on as my Brightfeather did not work out (the yarns were too low-contrast). Which yarn and colours are you using for yours? I'm attempting a white and pink version.

@@KnittingWithCatHair Aww too bad, I liked your concept that you showed in the video! I'm looking forward to seeing your Goldwing, though. Mine is in a green gradient for the contrast colour and black for the body of the sweater, and I'm doing short sleeves. If you're doing the Goldwing - I highly recommend doing some ladderback jacquard stitches for the wider part of the yoke and the sleeves. I did some starting on row 40 of the yoke into stitch 10 of the pattern repeat and closed them on row 52, and I also did some from row 4-21 of the sleeve pattern. Definitely helped with the longer floats

That sounds lovely! And thanks for the tip. I haven't tried that method of catching floats before but have heard lots about it. Perhaps it's time I learned 😊

Enjoyed the podcast visit with you Nikki! And I agree, it's a wonderful time in the garden - so exciting to see what comes back, and to anticipate the new things... also looking so forward to our veggies (tomatoes, lettuce and herbs). Such joy seeing it all fill in! And definitely NOT a monogamous knitter or crocheter... but now I am feeling a little stress with the UFOs, so I need to do some backtracking and finish some oldies 😊... have a lovely week. Cheers, Judith

Hey Nikki! I totally agree with Soldotna being a weird fit. Mine is also super wide and I have a lot of room in the back. It’s definitely one I’d like to revisit in the future and make some mods to the body. Yours looks super cute with the dress though!

Very challenging sweaters on the go. Looking forward to following your progress. I wonder if you could experiment with your Soldotna to figure out what might make you happier with the fit. I was thinking you could take out some extra fabric by running a basting line up your back but I think it might be easier just to have someone stand behind you and grasp the fabric. I suspect you might be able to remove 4 to 6 inches of fabric and still have positive ease everywhere except the bust. You may like it or not, but it’s a pretty harmless way to determine if it would improve the fit. I tend to stick to one sweater on the needles although m often planning/swatching for a second. Then another 1-2 more portable or mindless projects. Glad to have found your podcast. Deborah in Florida

Hi Nicky! Love the colours of the Soldotna with your dress! Amy of Noble Charakter Crafts has had similar problems with some cardigans as you have with the Soldotna - too wide body and therfore not the shape she wanted. She was not gonna rib back, but instead she sewed it with the sewing machine and cut of the excess fabric. Unfortunately I don't remember which episodes but I think one garment was a burgundy cardigan. Maybe with beading, in a fingering yarn, something like a year ago?
Maybe that helps. Sending my wishes from Austria

I'd love to also knit an Alice Starmore pattern and try her yarn one day. Regarding holding yarns when knitting colourwork, I've tried various different methods but have found that using my typical English throwing creates the most even fabric. I get anxious when I have more than two WIPS. I also ordered Holst yarn for the first time a couple of months ago. The Tides (wool, silk blend) didn't really soften. Yes, it is definitely different from knitting with spun yarns. I watched this video on knitting with Nutiden when I was about to try knitting with it for the first time: ua-cam.com/video/Ajbq7QvkdTM/v-deo.html
My best advice would be take things slow and take breaks if you find yourself getting frustrated as you will most likely break your yarn numerous times in the beginning. I basically stopped knitting sweaters with superwash because the unreliable overstretching drove me crazy. Have you thought about ripping back about half of the torso of you soldotna and decreasing on either side? It may make a big difference to how much you like it with your dress - and this minimizing the ripping and reknitting, especially since it fits so well around the bust

    • @KnittingWithCatHair
      @KnittingWithCatHair  2 роки тому

Hi Nicole 🥰 I am the same in that I no longer buy superwash yarns for various reasons, one being the stretching issue. In this case I was trying to use up some older stash yarns and from what several others have since told me, there are issues with the pattern in terms of resulting fit (one being a body that is too wide). After considering many options, I think I will do precisely what you suggested! Thanks so much for watching and Happy Making 💕

So far I ever only knit on project at a time, because I think I need to get into the rhythm of the pattern to not make mistakes. And I am kind of a perfectionist, when it comes to my knits. Plus I want to have it ready to wear or give away, once I cast something on on 😅

Your top is lovely, but I agree about the width. You could be brave and do some steeking on the sides to taker it in. After cutting the garment you could get sew on some lovely ribbon to cover the steek and even wrap it around to the ruining on the front so it covers the seam. Good luck if you choose to do this....I think you'd be a lot happier with the fit.

Then be sure to create an account with Honer och Eir ahead of the shop sale and set an alarm so you don't miss it as their yarn sells out quickly. Good Luck!

Knitting colourwork flat means you have to purl the colourwork on the wrong side. Definitely slower-going but because the Chestnut pattern has very few rows where you have to catch floats, it wasn't unenjoyable. You'll see in later podcast episodes that I wasn't a fan of seaming the colourowork pieces together though 😂

Hi Nikki. Great podcast. Your soldotna is sooooo beautiful. It is so sad that you don't love it. You probably spent a fair amount of money on the yarn. Why don't you frog it to just under the bottom of your bust and do some gradual decreases (waist shaping without the increase part). Then you could make it longer too. Do you have enough yarn? It's just so sad that you think you won't wear it that much.

Thank-you so much Darlene 🥰 Yes, I think waist shaping is needed and I should have enough yarn to make it better. It's always tough when things don't work out as envisioned but if nothing else I may improve on my altering skills 😊 Thanks so much for watching and hope you have a lovely weekend 💕

@@KnittingWithCatHair I know. I have had a string of projects that I have had to frog and reknit 2 or 3 times but it's usually worth it in the end. I am watching some of the podcasts you recommended. Thanks !!!!!!

Great podcast , I just found you and Nutiden yarn . How many plates and what size plates do you order ? I’m unsure about how much to order for a sweater considering the plates are not consistent . Thank you .

Thanks Sara 🥰 Last time I ordered Nutiden, the yarn came in 100 g plates or you could purchase 300 g or 500 g bags of yarn. It is tricky to estimate how much yarn you will need as each colour can vary in thickness. I am an XL size (45" bust) and always ordered 500 g of each colour I wanted and have had leftovers for each of the sweaters I've made to date. If in doubt, I would recommend ordering more yarn than you think you'll need as it will be difficult to get your hands on the same colour again. Hope this helps and good luck! 🤗💕

On your daffodil, what is the weight of your yarn?

Hi Lena. The Holst Garn Supersoft yarn I am using for my Daffodil is a light fingering weight.

Hi Nikki your Soldotna is really beautiful. You may changed it and make it the way you feel better about it. It's your time, your color choice so go ahead and modified it 🧶🧶🧶

Thank-you Maria 🥰 I agree! I have decided I will rip back and make it fit the way I want it to! 😊

I would make the neckline longer so you could fold it n half ...I think that extra weight would solve that problem. As for the width...try to think how you would modify a thrift store sweater to fit your body....Elastic thread woven in and out of your floats on the wrong side (multiple rows of graduated length, evenly spaced) would taper the sweater! We spend so much time and love making that it would be a shame if this sweater "lived" most of the time in a drawer!

Thanks very much Devna. I definitelt plan on ripping back the body and re-knitting with some waist-shaping. Happy Making 🤗💕

Thanks Bernadette 😊 I've seen quite a few episodes but haven't yet seen the newest one. I did however just watch the Wooly Thistle interview with Marie Wallin and it was great (I may have also just ordered Cumbria 😂).

Your new sweater is very pretty but the length is way too short.

Everytime I see someone wearing a Soldotna I want one....then they proceed to say what they don't like about it 😒, so I'm going to resist temptation, I think

Hi Sandra 🥰 Yes, had I known the level of modifications that would be needed to make the Soldotna fit nicely, I wouldn't have bothered knitting it. Unfortunately as this is my first Caitlyn Hunter pattern, I'm now wary of knitting any more of her patterns. Hence why I cast on a Jennifer Steingass--I know the fit will be amazing! Thanks for watching and Happy Making! 💕
