Hey everyone, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for watching my video and for taking the time to hear my story. It's not easy to admit when we've made a mistake, but I believe that being honest and relatable is the best way to help others. If even one person learns from my experience and avoids making the same mistake, then sharing my story was worth it. So please, take this as a cautionary tale and remember to always prioritise safety on the road. Thank you again for your support, and ride safe out there.

The problem with speed enforcement in the UK is how dispassionate the police are in this day and age. I miss the days where the police used to take in the totality of the circumstances before deciding to nick you.
For example in the mid 80’s I was caught doing 114 in a 70 on an RD400E. The officer said “I saw you look over your shoulder, and there was no traffic and you took off.” He let me off, what a relief. Today I’d probably be in prison when a violent offender would get a slap on the wrist. I’m glad I don’t live in the UK anymore.

Banned twice for doubling the speed limit on a motorway, the second ban was a full retest. I moved to Gibraltar, took all my retests there, and now have a Gib license. Every time I get a speeding ticket I fill out the forms with my Gibraltar address and then never hear anything more about it.

I've represented myself in court twice now for being naughty on bikes (twice in over 20 years riding). I'd recommend it, both my cases were really well received by the judges and getting the chance to honestly hold my hands up, accept full accountability and negotiate my punishment directly with the law... was seen as a breath of fresh air by the procurator fiscal and I got very light and fair penalty both times. Lawyers are utter bullshit merchants and I wouldn't trust one to represent me. The judge was amused at that one. Weaseling your way out of a situation with a lawyer is a waste of money and an insult to a judge's intelligence. They appreciated the way I did it and my cop mates pissed themself at how lightly I was punished and how small my fines were!

I got caught doing just over 90mph on a 60mph road just after lockdown ended. I was on a Ninja1000 and literally just gave it a handful to overtake a car doing 50mph. The police pulled me over and I was told I would receive a court summons. I received a letter from the court but due to covid they were trying to deal with things out of court as much as possible and offered me 3 points and £100 fixed penalty. I was very lucky.

On the way back I passed an old red Corsa on the back road . Stopped at my mates wee workshop in the village , and a female and male cop approached me .
The guy said “ Are you ok?” I said yea fine why ?
He said I’d passed them rather quickly on the brow of the road and was going a bit too fast !
I told him about my visit , and politely pointed out that my heads probably 3ft above his so I can see further ahead .

I got pulled for speeding as well during the shutdown but I was classed as an essential worker and was coming back from work, It was also only a patrol car so no camera or I don't think they'd have had any choice but the Cops that pulled me were good as gold, not least when they knew where I was coming from, just told me to keep an eye on my speed and let me go, that was around 50 in a 30 so could have been serious.

I had a similar thing happen to me. I was working through lockdown in the city of London, and I commute on my bike 14 miles to work every day. I got caught down 38mph in 20mph zone, (Which used to be a 30mph zone). I haven't had any points on my licence since 1997. The cop that caught me with a speed gun hiding behind a tree, was determined to prosecute me for it, even though there was nothing on the road. I ended up getting 5 points and a £350 fine. First question: Is this your vehicle sir?

They were decent lads and I was soon on my way.
Went to court suited and booted which must have been a pleasant surprise for the magistrates given the state of some of the scrotes in the waiting area.
And the end of the copper’s statement it read that I had been polite and courteous throughout.

I was a tear away when I was younger getting up to 9 points then I got another 3, I won’t go into how I got away with not getting those last 3 points 😂 but now at 53 years old I try to stick to the limits, and it’s hard to speed now as lots of average speed cameras springing up in Lancashire.

Got so much enjoyment and engagement in my driving without having to speed excessively that I did my advanced riding course too.

    Thanks for sharing, bud.
Story from over here in Switzerland, couple of years back. There were road works between our local town and Berne, bit like a B road. Normal speed limit is set at 60kph and due to said road works, it was reduced to 30kph. I went through on a Saturday afternoon (of course, no work being done, road open), doing 45kph (shock, horror, 28mph) and was caught by a mobile radar. Because it was 15kph over the limit within an urban area, the fine was 650CHF + about 250CHF admin fees (about £810 altogether). I could either pay or go to jail for 3 days 😟.
There are no points over here and they take speeding very seriously. It's almost a capital offence...

We live in a society where we're scared too, and more disturbingly, not allowed to have any fun. The speed limits were set at a time before driver aids; better road surfaces, tyres etc. I think they should be revised. I'd like to see a national motorway limit of 125mph, I think that's plenty. The police really should focus their efforts on solving crime and not simply using the motorist as a cash cow.

I was reading the other day that a county in America made all the traffic department rudundant and following this the amount of motorists being caught for speeding fell significantly. It just goes to show that if you leave people alone they start to take responsibility for their own actions.

Such an honest and down to earth video by a bike lover like myself. I have subscribed a while back.
I have a number of comments to add:
I have been driving/riding bikes since 1979 (yes I am not a young man), and in that time have had 3 speeding offences (all in a car though). However, it is almost impossible on today's roads to keep track of speed limits (they go up and down so much), and I also like to keep an eye on the road, NOT the speedometer.
I do, yes I do, try to keep to speed limits, but it is easier said than done when on the wrong side of the road overtaking, especially on a bike (I ride a BMWR1250R). If I am over the limit after the overtake, I slow down, I will not share what speeds I have been at, but like your bike, my bike can pull 100 mph very quickly, it has so much torque.
One other point, I ride in sport (dynamic) mode all the time, even in the wet. The only big thing I notice is I do not have to turn the throttle so much, which is kind on the the wrist. Once you know your bike, as I am sure you do, you use the throttle responsibly, even in the wet, I do not have issues.
A final point, is I have never comes to terms with everything the TFT offers, however I am due a service (booked in next week), 1500 miles under the 6000 miles, but 3 weeks over a year. The TFT is rendered useless by a 'big service due ' screen', which will not respond to input, and I have searched the internet how to turn it off. Pardon my french, but it really pisses me off.
PS. Your blackbird project is an inspiration.
PPS. One final point to test the patience. Lockdown was evil for so many like yourself. When lone dog walkers or joggers or riders were penalised by the police it was an easy catch, and I never saw them as a threat, but when big demonstrations (such as BLM, and I am not against BLM), which were a brewery for the virus, went unchecked, the bigotry was nauseating. You were not a threat to anyone being out alone on your bike.

Then you have the Police, the Ambulance staff, the people in the Emergency department and the ward (if you are admitted), the Radiographers and surgical team if you need an operation etc. While we have put all of this behind us now, it still doesn't hurt to think of how many people can be effected by your own actions, and of course the effect this could have on the people who love and care about you. I came off my bike and spent time in hospital and TBH the hardest part was having my 5 year old son coming in to visit and wanting to know when I was coming home, it was absolutely heartbreaking. That’s a really great outcome mate. I’m happy for you.
Now I’ve spent a lot of time on the previous gen 1 S1000r and this is exactly why I believe that 1000cc in-line 4’s are pointless on the road.
There’s torque but it’s not nearly as exciting as the HP at the top and power delivery is so linear.
This is also why I got rid of my T V4 Factory 1100 as it was just to efficiently fast and I really couldn’t get my kicks. The bike got to triple figures far too quickly with hardly any time on the throttle.

@BikesofRye Just discovered your channel and I'm really enjoying the vids. This one struck a chord with me as it's so similar to me and my brother getting done about 20 odd years ago. We got done for 100.9mph in a 60mph limit. There was not a thing on the road and we were in the middle of nowhere. Like you, I didn't try and wriggle out of it or make excuses; I was on my relatively new R6, I was young (and daft) and just wanted to open it up, but there was a copper in an unmarked car hiding up a dirt track and, well, he got us. It was part of a targeted programme by the police to catch speeding bikers.
We had go to court on different days and we both represented ourselves (a solicitor even said it was a waste of money to pay for representation). I got a 2 month ban and £300 fine (this was in 2000 remember) and my brother got 6 points and a £300 fine. So what did I learn from it? A few things: 1) don't ride like dick or be prepared to take a punishment, 2) the law isn't consistent, we got done by the same cop for the same offence at the same time but got different punishments, 3) and this is the one that sticks in my throat, when I watch things like Traffic Cops on the TV I consistently see people riding/driving with no licence, no insurance, while disqualified etc etc who get less of a penalty in 2024 than we got is 2000. Speed is regarded as evil, regardless of whether it was done safely, and is the main 'crime' that most law abiding normal people will get done for. So be careful!!!

I had a speeding conviction in 2014 for doing 62mph on a section of the A414 in Essex by Onger, it has a zebra crossing where the speed limit drops from 60mph to 30mph for about half a mile.
And the Police were monitoring speeds at the start of that section.
I had checked my speed as I saw the police officer, and thought I was ok!
Ended up with a probable ban as double the speed limit is automatic ban, where 50-60mph is ban or points at Magistrate discretion.
I represented myself and put forward a case of exceptional hardship as I was the main earner for my family with children at Senior school. The Magistrate accepted my plea and got 6 points and £300 fine

What surprised me was the fine for speeding was £415 & £90 court fees but adding on £166 to top up the victims of crime fund was taking the piss, I guess they have to find ways of topping it up but adding it to a speeding fine!

Over here in NSW 30 km/h over is a 3 months suspension instantly and I think 40 km/h is 6 months instant suspension. Of course that's only like 20mph. Very draconian. About ten years ago I lost my licence twice that way - particularly because they dropped the speed limit on my favourite ride by 20 km/h and made it like crawl - so if you rode at 10 km/h over the old speed limit that's 30 km/h over... At that point I got sick of walking to work and it seriously inconvenienced people so I sold my VFR750F and BMW K1300s, cried... (I'll admit it - they were like my children) and didn't own a bike again until I retired which was early at the age of 47. I totally sympathise mate although you are lucky you got off lightly except for the legal costs, anxiousness and hassle of course. All the best Ryan - glad to be your friend mate - even if I live so far away.

Have you considererd selling it and buying a bike that its much harder to speed on. How about a Honda cub C50. They have very low power and are very suitable for folks that have genuine difficulty riding within the speed limit. They are also quite a sporty looking machine so are the perfect match for an owner who is concerned about image and wants to project himself as sporty.

Almost as much fun is my Aston Martin DB11 which I have recently been caught speeding (officially clocked at 104mph), on an empty dual carriage way in bright weather conditions. In 2021 received 3 points for 80 and 2022 caught at 80 obtaining another 3 points, both occasions on empty motorways in good conditions. Unfortunately I think I’ll receive a ban but intend to attend the inevitable court appearance with grovelling apologies and hope for leniency with a minimal ban period. Anyone else had similar totting up issues and what did you experience punishment wise? 🤦🏻‍♂️

I've been in court 3 times for motoring offences (none for 30 years though lol). unless you are really brewstered you should realise you are going to get done and can't do anything about it, so all arguing and excuses are going to do is antagonise them, they have heard it all a million times before, so unless you have a real need, dont waste money on a solicitor, it won't do you any good at all.
