That keyboard would have actually been the most logical investment versus the power supply. As long as it's showboating on a table in the back of your studio it will always have it's place.
I legitimately use the Windows thousands of times daily. Switching desktops. Popping the start menu. Win + E for a new file explorer. Win + Up / Down / Left / Right to shrink and multitask windows. Insanely useful key. If you think it's useless you're missing out for real.

For the 4 years that I’ve been in college, I’ve used mainly my MBP, other than when I was in programming intensive classes.
The majority of my networking courses, and Linux based courses were over VM so I used my MBP as well.
Holy crap I can’t wait to get off work tomorrow and try these out. Honestly thanks for this comment. You’re gonna make me utilize windows more efficiently.
then there's win+s for screenshots, win+v for advanced paste (may need to be turned on), not to mention on Mac it becomes cmd/apple key which is used for almost every keyboard shortcut from copy/paste to switching programs

@Garo lubing switches and mounting style are what really help with overall sound and feel. Not everyone wants in this rabbit-hole of a hobby and I do not blame them. Varmilo from what I’ve read and heard will make for a great out of the box mech experience compared to the logi. If anything you could always tinker with the varmilo down the road. What switches did you end up going with? Cheers and hope you enjoy it!
@Garo yeah, lubing is a real pain and time consumer. I personally like black switches for the slightly heavier actuation weight, but the reds should do you just as well. I’ve heard they do have some pretty solid caps, so hopefully it turns out to be a good pickup for you.

Love this video as I am researching building my own keyboard for gaming. I have a completely unrelated question though just because it looks really cool... what is / where can I get the large mat you were using/working on in this video?? I really liked the look and especially the size! Thanks for the content, and YES I would love to see more tech vids on building your own keyboard.
It’s a Gamers Nexus anti-static mod mat. You can see the GN logo at the bottom of some of the overhead shots.
if you want a good board prebuilt, get gk61 or mk61. if your rich and want a custom.... thats gonna be pain in the ass. good keycaps costs hundreds of dollars. getting a board is just not possible. they sell out instantly. and the good keycaps take 20 million years to arrive. switches are easy though they are easily accesible and a pcb costs a bank. but you can get a decent one out a mk61 or gk61. so.. as long as you get a cheap board for the pcb and meanwhile use. and get some decent keycaps and not the good ones. your fine. also the board from the gk61 or mk61 is also a good idea unless you want the drip

They demonstrated it the wrong way. Lubing significantly changes the sound of the upstroke and bottom-out.
This video shows the difference much better on a naked aluminium plate. The effect is only amplified inside a finished keyboard.

I gotta honest, the sounds so good, not gonna lie, I thought it's gonna make sound loud ping sounds since it's full metal, but I'm surprised and impressed that it's so quiet. It does sounds clacky, but it's not annoying at all.

I’ve had a keyboard my father got from a junk pile at his battalions workplace. It has a cac card reader on it (not sure if I spelled it right) but I don’t use it of course. I will tell you as a 19 year old and using that keyboard for over 2 years that I love the windows key and it is very useful.
For years I was trying to recreate this at a not so ridiculous price. If you want something similar look for Cerakey keycaps. They are made of ceramic not metal but give a nice marble/dice sound, weigh pretty heft and won't wear out just like the brass ones.

I woud love to see some alternative keycap materials. Ceramic, glass, bone, different hardwoods, etc. I'm sure there are pretty wicked materials out there that would make baller keyboards.
ceramic is already a thing, from what i've heard it sounds pretty good. all the other ones would be funny but stupid difficult to machine and process

Ikr. Windows Key + D, + L are my most used shortcuts.
I legitimately don't know what I'd do to get my windows back if I accidentally shoved them offscreen or fully under the taskbar, if I didn't have Windows key + arrows shortcuts. Alt+F4 out and open back up, I guess? Unlock the taskbar, move it somewhere else and grab the sliver of window?
I can't recall a time where I screwed myself up by pressing the Windows key. Anyone who'd consider that to be worthy of removing from a keyboard isn't the kind of person I want designing my keyboard~

No physical spot for the button means no chance to put the button there. Not sure how being programmable solves that problem, aside from being able to sacrifice something else so I can re-learn how to keyboard for the low, low price of $400.
I'm sorry, but if we're compromising ANYTHING at this price point and we're not even including the switches or keycaps, I'm not impressed.

Should have tried ink blacks instead, they take to lube better and are smoother in general. Also I recommend spring swapping the switch under the space bar for something heavier.

I would think that aluminum would be better for the keys, since you can also cerakote aluminum, and it would also greatly reduce the weight of things.

I'm a Linux user and even I need that key. It's called the super key on Linux and I don't know how I'd live without it.

It would be a overkill if it was a case from keycult and tealiosv2 swiches lubed with krytox 205g0 and cherry screw in stabilizers lubed with krytox and eltric grease plus a couple cable maching the colors plus a custom 3d brass scape key with a character desing
Keycult is overrated AF. Ai03 has shown that endgame cases don't have to cost 2000$.
Tealios is a mediocre switch at best, for a completely absurd price. They are scratchy, have a disappointing sound, and generally no place in 2020.
Cherry stabs? Just why? GMK screw ins, ZealStabs or C3s are preferred.
And if you wanna go full overkill, only one switch satisfies the project:
Nixdorf Cherry MX Blacks, or Nixies, harvested from a Nixdorf Softkeys.

I got myself the keyboard from DROP (alimunium frame) and that thing is insanely heavy compared to my last one (probably like they said). First thought that came out of my mouth when I opened the box and lifted it.

That keyboard sounded lovely. A gentle and subtle click. Love it. I actually would buy a kit like that... if it weren't so freaking expensive xD one key cap alone costs as much as both my mouse and keyboard combined.
There are plenty of keyboards out there that sound very very nice for much less money. Look up some videos on the KBD67Lite. A much better entry point into the world of custom mechanical keyboards. Don't forget to lube your switches and stabilizers!

I'd suggest high pressure injection moulded aluminium keys
Much MUCH cheaper and 80% of the way there when it comes to the quality feel
Put that into mass production and you'll end up with something quite affordable.

silly way to judge a keyboard. If it doesnt move during operation then its heavy enough. Plus people move it a lot for comfort.. thousands of micro adjustments for no obvious reason. Linus should do a video on peoples keyboard\mouse positions and hand positions on keyboard mouses. How big a variance there is between players skill and his hand positions on the devices.
That came to my mind as well when i got my G513 keyboard that is in this video as well xD.
