  • Siddis, belong to India and live in very small pockets of Karnataka, Goa, Maharastra, Gujarat, and Andra Pradesh. It is said that the Portuguese and the British enslaved African ancestors and brought them to their colonies on the Indian coast from the 16th century onward right in to the 19th century.
From the end of last year we are planning to conduct series of quilt making workshops for women of the Siddi community, to enhance their traditional quilt making skills and to bring knowledge in understanding the possibilities of present marketing methods. We wish in future, we can generate market for quilts made by Siddi women. This is to create job opportunities and reduce economical dependency of Siddi women. In future we aspire to utilise part of the profit towards the community empowerment such as housing, farming, education, health etc.
To begin with, we have conducted a successful first 5 days workshop from May 5th to 10th May 2017, for Siddi women who are living around Manchikeri, Yellapur taluk. There was tremendous response from the community. Workshop was resourced by my Anitha N. Reddy, who has experience in working with communities and women. She is also a professional designer and Channakeshava G. who is also designer, director, Theatre activist.
We are planning to have series of workshops to build confidence among women in the community. Second workshop is scheduled from 23rd June to 27th June, 2017. Due to lack of funds, it is becoming burden to take this forward. Initially few like minded friends contributed money to get materials, fabrics, tools, machine, food, transportation, documentation etc. We have such expenditure in future to create basic infrastructure, to introduce them to new technologies and to conduct workshops to enhance their quilt making skills. As we all know, financial condition in Siddi community is very poor.
We request you, to contribute and help to raise funds to empower Siddi women.
Funds could be transferred to the bank account of SIDDI TRUST, Devara Kallalli, Shiranala Post, Manchikeri, Yellapur taluk, Uttara Kannada Dist. 581347, which is registered under trust act in 2003.
You can also contribute in the form cash, cheque and DD.
