  • We three kings of orient are
    Bearing gifts we traverse afar
    Field and fountain
    Moor and mountain
    Following yonder star
O star of wonder, star of night
    Star with royal beauty bright
    Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light
Born a King on Bethlehem's plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
    King for ever, ceasing never
    Over us all to reign
    Frankincense to offer have I
    Incense owns a Deity nigh
    Prayer and praising
    All men raising
    Worship Him, God most high
Myrrh is mine It's bitter perfume
breathes a life of gathering gloom
    Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying
Sealed in the stone cold tomb
    Glorious now behold Him arise
    King and God and Sacrifice
    Al-le-lu-ia, al-le-lu-ia
    Heaven to earth replies

      Really?
      God watches a people sin
      Is disgusted by it
      keeps watching though doing nothing
      impregnates young girl
waits 30 odd years for the child to grow up
watches his child get tortured and murdered
so he can forgive the people
even though he could have done it without the blood sacrifice.
      That somehow makes sense??
& how long was the 'sacrifice'?
      Not even 2 days...
Who needs a father like father like that?
      'love?'
Who's want that kind of love
      Nah!

He could have not made mankind like that in the first place.
      He could have just forgiven
But he had his son killed before he would do even that.
      And even then
We can all still be sent to hell...

Modern christian songs are not nessecarily trash, the style is different. Songs before were mostly to tell and remember stories or teach lessons. Songs now are focused on expression and feelings. That is what makes some feel pull towards the traditional songs, they tell us stories. Though I am sceptical about use of songs that do not even mention God or scripture in church services.

@@marlena. Precisely because modern songs are focused on expression and feelings, they're weak on doctrine. But when we're focused on emotions, not on doctrine, we end up with weak, emotional Christians without a strong doctrinal foundation. Obviously emotions have a place in Christian worship, but they're not the main focus - rather, right emotions come from right doctrine and right worship.
I don't want to paint with too broad a brush. There are plenty of modern songs with great doctrinal content. For example, I don't wholeheartedly endorse the Gettys, but they've written some excellent hymns. And of course there have always been trash songs, but most of the trash over time falls by the wayside.

@MikeWinger, if you like this one, take a look at the Edward Caswall's translation of (Aurelius Clemens) Prudentius' fourth century hymn "O sola magnarum urbium" (O alone of great cities) rendered in English as the Epiphany hymn "Bethlehem of noblest cities". It has a fantastic single verse for the three gifts of the Magi with the same symbolism:
    Solemn things of mystic meaning:
    Incense doth the God disclose,
    Gold a royal child proclaimeth,
    Myrrh a future tomb foreshows.
    Original Latin (with literal translation):
Regem Deumque (King and God) annuntiant
thesaurus (the treasure announces), et fragrans odor
thuris Sabaei (and fragrant odour of Sabean fire), ac myrrheus
pulvis sepulchrum praedocet (and myrrh sepulchral dust foretells).

In the Old Testament, myrrh was used as a pleasant scent along with frankincense and other spices. There are a number of references in Song of Solomon to things being scented with myrrh. It was also apparently used to relieve pain. In Mark 15:23, before Jesus was crucified, He was offered wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not drink it.

    T. S. Eliot wrote ‘The journey of the Magi.” I find it to be the best antidote to commercialized Christmas. I think it demonstrates that once you know who HE is there is no going back to the same old life.
PS- in my NDE in 2011, I came away with the deluded impression that even though I never saw his face, i would recognize him by his fragrance. I remember that he smelled like Frankincense ( I was given a small quantity years before that I keep in a jar.) , rose water and sandalwood. No short cuts or tricks ever prevail with him, though. I was study those ingredients thinking I had a cheat code and I learned more about his character. Those three ingredients are sometimes used to bring healing to the brain. The coma was caused by the accidental siphoning off of my spinal fluid. ALL things work to the glory!

I’m inclined to believe that Mary fully understood the symbolism of these items, especially the myrrh. Scriptures talk about her pondering things in her heart. I’ll bet she pondered that, all right. I don’t know how she kept from dying of a broken heart knowing what was coming. Maybe she didn’t fully comprehend every detail of what was coming but she knew… She knew. Right from the beginning… When she took Jesus to the temple as an infant, the godly man, Simon, told her as much:
”Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.”“

Nah, I prefer it as it is by far. It’s poetic license with an actual meaning, and that meaning is lost by changing it. The songwriter is matching the three gifts to the three men who offer them. The song is in first person, so it makes more sense to say there are three with how the rest of the song is worded. That’s not necessarily how it happened, but it’s not unreasonable either. And they are styled as kings because they went to see the King of kings! That’s a deep message even if the songwriter dabbled with poetic license to convey it. I really dislike changing old hymns. Songwriters work hard at finding a specific wording and changing that is just disrespectful to their work and typically removes layers of meaning. Words matter in poetry.

according to some calculations, the magi found the christ child on 22 december 2 bc or 25 december 2 bc at the end of retrograde of jupiter. coincidentally, it was also hannukah. in astronomy, the celestial sphere also have corresponding analogues to the terrestrial sphere given a particular time. so it is conceivable to determine, a point on the terrestrial sphere which points to the location of the christ child given a specific time.

There could have been 3 kings or Magi, it's a bit of justified artistic licence based on common folklore. But the arrival of the Magi is the third revelation to Mary of who Jesus was (after the annunciation and the visitation to Elizabeth). There are two later ones ones, from Simeon at the presentation in the Temple, and from Jesus himself at the finding in the Temple.

My issue with the song, and I suppose it might be minor, is that the magi did not show up at the manger on the night of Christ's birth. They did not show up while He was an infant. They showed up when He was a child, and they were living in a house. This also explains why Herod had all the male children 2 years old and under killed.
    Matthew 2:9-11
    (9) When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
    (10) When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
    (11) And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

Mike, the magi were not at the birth bowing before the baby. Only the shepherds. Lord Jesus teaches us that the magi first saw Him, and presenting their gifts to Him when Christ was between 1 1/2 to 2 years old. Luke says, " and they entered the house where the little child was with His mother. And they presented gifts to Him, gold..." It is extremely important to our Master to represent Him and His word perfectly accurate as I know you are already aware. Satan uses inaccuracies to pervert the minds of people. Please take this as the help it is intended to be

I don’t remove comments. You’re probably dealing with UA-cam’s automated comment moderation tools. Google how to avoid having your comment blocked by YT. It’s not me.

But when I post scripturally insightful comments that challenge either the content creator's view or anyone who supports the content creator’s perspective I find that my comments are suspiciously removed.
Now, why would the YT algorithm that searches for abusive language and offensive speech permit atheists' comments that berate people of faith yet disallow my scriptural comment?

      *John 8:44*
Would you lie and place yourself under the fatherhood of Satan just to save face?
You are most certainly removing comments. Owners of the channel can remove comments and for you to claim you don't completely undermines you having community rules. If you will not take action against violators then why have rules?
I know you will remove this one too but at least you will know the truth of who you are and have to live with that deception.

The problem I have with this song is one that you don't mention here. According to the Bible, by the time the wise men show up on the scene, Jesus is living in a house, not a baby in the manger.
Matthew 2:11 "And when they were come into the HOUSE, they [the magi] saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh."
And in this passage, Jesus is referred to as a YOUNG CHILD five times, and not as a baby.
Then Herod slew all the children from 2 years and younger, "according to the time he had diligently enquired of the wise men." So, Jesus was possibly 2 years old, and living in a house when the wise men came.
Why does no one ever see this but me?

    Excellent exposition brother Mike.
But it is not a Christmas song!
The shepherds found Jesus as a newborn infant in a manger.
The magi found Jesus as a toddler (older than an infant, at any rate), in a house.
This adds more impact! Jesus had passed successfully through the newborn stage, where many deaths used to occur. So there was more natural expectation that He would live to fulfill the prophetic nature of the gifts.

God cannot die. God cannot be tempted.
God cannot be a "second Adam"!! (Romans 5, 1st Corinthians 5).

@@BradyR95 Of course I'm not wasting my time nor that of others.
I am simply pointing out a) the arrogance and condescension in all popular UA-cam preachers which is perceptible to the discerning and b) that NOWHERE in Scripture does it say "the God of all creation who cane in human form", as Mike says here.
Don't you think that IF that were true, it would be THE central theme of the book of Acts and every New Testament book and epistle??
      But it's clearly not!
How many people have read and taken seriously the warnings in 1st John about getting the identity of Jesus (as SON of God and Messiah i.e "God's anointed one") right???
OBVIOUSLY the warnings in that letter (and 2nd John) would look a LOT different if Jesus was God.
Here are just two examples (and you can read for yourself his warnings in 1st John 4:2-3 & 2nd John about the antichrist spirit deceiving people by denying Jesus came in the "sarx/sarki" i.e carnal/human nature)
"Whoever confesses that Jesus is *the son of God* God abides in him and he in God" (1st John 4:15)
"Whoever believes that Jesus is *the Messiah* is born of God" (1st John 5:1)
DO YOU HONESTLY THINK JOHN "FORGOT" TO ADD "WHOEVER BELIEVES JESUS IS GOD....."?????
He didn't add it because it's NOT TRUE.
Jesus had God INDWELLING, yes, as he says so himself (John 14:10-11) but regenerate believers have the Holy Spirit indwelling (John 14:16-17, Romans 8, 1 Corinthians 3:16, 2 Corinthians 13:5 etc) but that does not make us God.
Whenever Jesus affirmed declarations about his identity, it was as SON OF GOD and MESSIAH.
He affirmed the declarations of John the Baptist, Nathaniel, Martha, Peter - see below - and others (and God Himself declared "THIS IS MY SON" at the baptism and Transfiguration of Jesus).
Please read repeatedly the 1st letter of John.
Apart from Romans, it's THE most important epistle in the New Testament.
‭"When Jesus came into the coasts of Cæsarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying
"Who do men say that I, the son of man, am?" And they said: "Some say that you are John the Baptist: some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets".
      He asked them:
*But who do you say that I am*
And Simon Peter answered and said:
*You are the Christ, the Son of the living God*
And Jesus answered and said unto him: *Blessed are you* Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood has not revealed it unto you, but my Father who is in heaven"
      (Matthew 16:13-17)
PS Please don't go down either of the typical routes that people take when challenged over this i.e
      a) they make false accusations (eg. "You must be a JW/Mormon/Muslim" 🙄)
      b) they look up what some man says about it
If you say aloud from your heart, as Peter did: "Jesus, you are the son of God and Messiah", ADDING NOTHING MORE, God will bless you (spiritually-speaking) and reveal soooo much more.
Godly truth (in Greek "aletheia", meaning UNHIDDEN) is sooo simple.
It's doctrines of MAN that are filled with contradictions and obfuscation.
I grew up in the RCC (no longer RC obviously, just a Biblical Christian) so I spot it a mile away...

@@leenieledejo6849 The Gospel of St. John exposes your claims as lies.
Three quick examples (I'm sure there are more):
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made." ~ John 1:1-3
"For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, 'My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.' Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God." ~ John 5:16-18
"'Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.' Then the Jews said to Him, 'You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?' Jesus said to them, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.' Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by." ~ John 8:56-59
