As a Protestant conservative Christian, I feel like Mary doesn’t get enough press. Her faith in God the Father is humbling to read about. She is a hero of the faith. I don’t pray to Mary, but I do thank God for her and this beautiful song.
I can agree with that. In some circles she's literally worshipped right alongside Jesus, but in the conservative Christian circles she's almost completely ignored. She's got to be a giant in the faith for God to choose her as his own mother.
@@TheRealMonnieThe gospel is about Christ & not Mary. She should be acknowledged as much as the scriptures have done. And, that should be enough. Anything extra & external to that, has nothing to do with the Holy Spirit.
I believe the lyrics "Kiss the face of God" is sloppy. Lowry was on weak theological ground when he phrased it that way. The Biblical phraseology of Jesus in speaking to Judas would be better. "betrayest thou the SON OF MAN with a kiss?" (Luke 22:48)
Yes, though I'm a mezzo-soprano, it's also great when a man sings along to balance out lower notes. Esp a tenor. Honestly, a mezzo and tenor can really work!!
I love O Holy Night but you have to sing all the verses. O come O Come Emmanuel also beautiful. And Mary Did You Know always makes me think. The verse in I Heard The Bells on Chrustmas Day -" .. Even if I may not feel God or He feels far away I am reminded He is indeed watching and it's under control. What I love most is that there are actually a lot of truly beautiful Christmas carols.
We have a podcast called "Lyric and Letter" that does just that! Though we are not Mike, it's profound how much of the gospel is written into our worship songs! I would love to some day partner with Mike to do an episode or two. - Rebecca
A while back, I saw an interview with Mark Lowry where he talked about the process he went through in writing this song. It made me appreciate the song so much more.

Jews would NEVER accept that Yahweh could impregnate a mortal woman. But it's literally how ever Greek hero is born. We owe a lot to Greek mythology for the story of Christ!
@@ryanrevland4333😳 That's exactly the problem with man-made doctrine: it stems from paganism. Jesus calls Peter BLESSED in Matthew 16 when Peter declares Jesus as SON OF GOD and MESSIAH. God was IN Jesus (John 14:10-11). That would make zero sense if Jesus was God. He isn't. He needed to be a MAN to be the "second Adam" (Romans 5, 1 Corinthians 5 etc). If Jesus was God (which he isn't) then the very serious warning in 1st John 4:2-3 would obviously be VERY different. And so would the rest of 1st John...
"God is a spirit" (words of Jesus in John 4:23) "Nobody has seen God" (John 1:18, 6:46) God was IN Jesus, INDWELLING him, as Jesus himself makes clear in John 14:10-11. Read and believe the words of Jesus. Not the doctrines of MEN. "When Jesus came into the coasts of Cæsarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying "Who do men say that I, the son of man, am?" And they said: "Some say that you are John the Baptist: some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets". He asked them: *But who do you say that I am* And Simon Peter answered and said: *You are the Christ, the Son of the living God* And Jesus answered and said unto him: *Blessed are you* Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood has not revealed it unto you, but my Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 16:13-17)
Except that God doesn't have a face. Jesus was both God and man, but His face was part of His humanity. So were His birth and His death. His Deity did not have a face, was never born, and never died. Say that the face of Jesus is the face of God is misapplying his divine nature to His human nature. Same goes for calling Mary the "mother of God." God does not have a mother. Mary did not create God; God created Mary. While Mary gave birth to Jesus in His human form, she did not give birth to His Deity. That said, I don't mind the song, except that it's become way overexposed at this time of year, much like Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You."
Away in a Manger was a childhood favorite of mine. My family was not Christian, but my mom would play this song and a few others on the piano every year so that the neighborhood kids could practice for Christmas caroling. This song in particular was one of the seeds that was planted in my heart leading me to salvation in Christ as a 25 year old.
♥️ Feels good to be born again ♥️ 1 Peter 1 kJV 23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. 24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. 1 Corinthians 15 kJV ✝️🩸 1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: Romans 3 kJV ✝️🩸 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
This song (Mary did you know) always gets me all teary eyed at the beautiful description of Who Jesus is and His purpose for coming here in the first place. It’s such a good portrayal of the real true meaning of Christmas. 😊
My wife and I went to Liberty University and Mark Lowery, the writer of the song, is a graduate from there. I have sat and talked to him a few times but my wife had his mother , Beverly, as an education professor.. She was a wonderful lady and Mark was a around a lot to visit his mom... I believe he was singing with the Gaither Vocal Band when he wrote this...
We just talked about this song after my small group! Someone didn’t like it, because they’re thinking, “Yes! She knew!” But I shared how I thought it was a great way to explain the Gospel and that may have changed their mind!
That's funny, I guaranty there is no way she had any clue what was truly happening. NOBODY did. Not even Satan had a clue, and I can promise he is far shrewder and knows so much more about the spiritual reality and background behind what was going on, than any human at that time. IF he knew, he would have never crucified Christ. So, it's very safe to assume, she had very little idea of what was truly happening, what she was a part of, and what would take place. She obviously knew something incredible was happening, but not the full extent. She is the only one that KNEW she was a virgin. Joseph could trust and believe, but she KNEW! Ironically, the ONLY one mentioned in the Bible that seemed to know what was happening was the thief on the Cross. Even when all His Disciples fled and thought all hope was lost, the guy dying right next to Him, somehow figured out He WAS the Son of God and this death was NOT the end, not defeat, but victory. That just gives me insane chills to think about. Of course, like Jesus said to Peter upon his confession, flesh and blood didn't reveal it to the thief; but for some reason the thief was the only one that could receive and believe what the Holy Spirit told him. He even figured out the key points of the sinner's prayer: acknowledged his sin and was deserving of death, acknowledged Jesus's righteousness and that He WAS Lord, and asked Jesus to save Him(remember me when you come into your kingdom). This to me was one of the greatest miracles!
@@jeffrachelburkhalter3783 there is literally no basis for that ssumption, since nobody but the thief on the cross figured it out before He rose again. Read Luke 2:49-50. If they couldn't even understand what Jesus meant when He said He had to be in His father's house, there is no way they understood the deeper things, like dying on the cross to save us from our sins.

@@jeffrachelburkhalter3783 yeah, but like the rest of Isael, including his apostles, she had no clue what that meant. Even when Jesus TOLD his disciples he was going to be delivered over to the unbelievers, crucified and killed, but rise on the third day, they couldn't beleive it. Thought He had to be speaking in code. Even Satan, as shrewd as he is, had no clue what that meant, or he wouldn't have crucified Jesus.
My absolute favorite cover of this song is by Pentatonix. They give it so much life and power especially Mitch singing “the sleeping child you’re holding, is the Great I Am. Beautiful cover
This is seriously one of my FAVORITE Christmas songs! It's always given me chills! The "when you kiss your little baby you kissed the face of God" line... And then the "Great I AM" line... Gotta go listen now!
"Mary did you know?", "O Holy Night", and "Hark the Herald Angel Sings" are my three favourite Christmas Hymns. There's a bunch of others that are almost as loved, but those three are amazing.
I had no idea this song was "controversial." (Isn't everything?) It's obviously a rhetorical question. She did know some. But she also didn't know all the specific details. She discovered it little by little, as everyone did. It's a beautiful, powerful, Jesus-exalting song!
I’ve seen people attack it recently from the other side for questioning Mary’s knowledge. “Of course she knew! This song is insulting as it undermines her intelligence and it’s anti-Biblical because it counters Gabriel’s announcement!” Obviously the song is presented rhetorically from an awe-inspired Believer to the woman who bore and raised Him. It’s not questioning her awareness. It’s a poetic expression of “how did you walk through life with this knowledge?” (Sure, she didn’t know explicitly that He would walk on water; and maybe she didn’t fully grasp that the Messiah would be God Himself wrapped in human flesh … but even knowing Her child was the Promised Seed, God-With-Us, would have been overwhelming for any mother to process. And I think that’s what the song is working through.)
"But she also didn't know all the specific details" Oh? How exactly do YOU know all the specific details? God chose Mary. How can you presume she did not know more than any other human ever knows, about her baby, the Son of God?
She knew but she didn't fully comprehend, she knew her baby was conceived by the Holy Spirit but there's no way she could have fully understood who Jesus was. I think it's a wonderful song that expresses beautifully what it was probably like for her ..
By saying that Mary herself needs to be delivered, it makes it clear she is a person like all of us; a sinner in need of a savior. It humanizes rather than glorifies her.
Does it? The Immaculate Conception doesn't mean Mary didn't need a savior. Mary herself testified that God is her savior (Luke 1:47). Rather, God's saving grace was given to her preemptively, saving her from committing sins in the first place.
Mary was not like any of us. She is the masterpiece of God. She was filled with full of grace even before the angel appeared to her and said she will bear the child Jesus
"Mary did you know" is my favorite song of all, not just my favorite Christmas song. The words have so much impact. I could listen to it over and over.
I remember when it was fairly new, a couple of years, and I had gone to a Mark Lowry concert, and he was telling us about writing that song one night. He started thinking, "What all did Mary know. " Then wrote down the words, took it to a friend who wrote the music. We all begged him to sing it. He didn't have the music with him, but sang it acapella for us. It was so beautiful!
The lyrics provide an opportunity to place ourselves in that time and space and we can apply our own sentiments and experiences in those moments. Understanding that perspective allows us to see where in today’s time the further fulfilling of prophesy and our place in it. God is good.
Bruh what? It’s not biblical. Luke 1:28 is Mary being greeted by the angel and 1:42 is Elizabeth’s words. Included in the book, sure. Not to be taken so far out of context that Mary is queen of Heaven. I mean, honestly. Read in context. Not like you would considering Catholic dogma says only the priest can interpret, but hey, 1 Thessalonians points out that all can interpret scripture. Paul rejoiced because the people read to discern if what he said was true.
It is my absolute favorite Christmas song. My wife gets tired of listening to it because I’ll play it over and over Has been for years. It is beautiful how it describes Jesus. Love it. “This child that you delivered, would soon deliver you”!!!!! 🤯🤯
This song for me glorifies Christ and clearly points out that Jesus is the Savior of all mankind.... I love this song, it brings me to tears and along with Oh Holy Night, it is my favorite Christmas song! Mark Lowry is truly gifted by God to write such a beautiful and inspired song!
Actually, in scripture, Jesus calls "God" her Savior before Jesus was born. So, she was already saved and she had to be because there's no way that God would use sinful flesh to create His Son with. She had to be pure before being used to create Jesus and don't forget, 100% of Jesus' flesh comes from only one human being; Mary. And like Jesus said, no bad tree can produce good fruit and as scripture says, Jesus is the fruit of Mary.
@wheatandtares-xk4lp Yes, but while talking about Jesus, she differentiated Him from God. In the context of the scripture, she said that God (again, not Jesus) was the One Who saved her. And Jesus was already in her womb when she said this. Why did does scripture say that she conceived though The Holy Spirit and "not" Jesus? Again, God is Jesus and The Holy Spirit and God The Father, but why does scripture break up their duties? Easy...because the 3 persons that make up God had Their Own works to do. It's how God appeared to Abraham as 3 beings, but only God The Father spoke. Jesus didn't speak and The Holy Spirit didn't speak which is why Abraham referred to those 3 persons as "Lord". Also, your analogy is wrong. Think about it, what was it that saved mankind? It wasn't just Jesus "being" Jesus, right? It was his SACRFICE. No one was saved before He died. So, if Mary wasn't saved that means she was born with original sin which in turn means that Jesus was formed from sinful impure flesh, right? Is this what you believe and did Mary lie when she called God (not Jesus, not The Holy Spirit) her Savior? Because she couldn't have been saved if ONLY Jesus' sacrifice saves, right? And, how could Mary be both full of grace and sinful at the same time (original sin)? That would be impossible since the sacrifice hadn't been made for her yet "if" she wasn't immaculately conceived before Jesus. If you could tell me why God used sinful flesh, then that would mean that Jesus Himself would need a savior because He would be born with original sin. Remember, original sin isn't attached to hour spirits, but to our bodies. I only have on explanation... Jesus said that no good fruit could come out of a bad tree and Jesus, according to scripture, is the "fruit" of Mary, right? So by default, the tree would have to be good, right and she couldn't be good if she was born in sin, correct? One more thing, when Mary said that God was her Savior, she said that He did "great" things in her (plural). What were they? Well, one saving her so she could be pure to be used for the creation of Jesus and two, placing Jesus in her womb. Notice that she said that part in the past tense, not in any future tense.
@wheatandtares-xk4lp By the way, I have zero professional training as an apologist. I'm just a dude who happens to see thing in scripture that most Catholics don't and have been told by Father Groeschel (founder of The Franciscan Friars of The Renewal) and Father Apostoli that I had a charism for scripture, a literal gift.
Mike, I'm so glad you too the time to go over this amazing song. There is an anointing on it that is truly amazing, and timeless. It's far more than 'schtick'. Words fail and Holy tears overcome me whenever I hear it.
I never heard this song before. Mike, thanks for making this video! I love Mary for her sacrifice and commitment to Jesus. I pray to God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. God bless!
Mary, Thank You for saying Yes! Why do we only talk about Mary during Christmas? She was with Jesus the first 30 years of his life, she was the first disciple, walked and talked with him everyday. Thank You dear Mary for being our Mother too!
Mr. Mark Lowry is an amazing songwriter. He is a hilarious comedian, but to hear him tell how he wrote this song is amazing. I have always loved this song. Merry Christmas!
It is SO GOOD to see you in your church again! The online content is great, but I like real sermons sometimes just to listen to when I'm doing busy work or caring for my kids.
I never knew people were skeptical of this song. This song is as old as I am. We didnt celebrate Christmas growing up, but this is the only Christmas song I've never grown tired of, especially when it's Cee-Lo Green's rendition.
Mark Lowry and Buddy Green wrote this wonderful song!! They are Godly men who were inspired by our Lord!! Best Christmas song EVER!!! Shout out to all of the Gaither group! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
I do really love this song. The lyrics are so true and that truth is a beautiful, humbling awe-inspiring thing to behold and take into your heart and pray on. I thank Jesus and the Father for this most wonderful gift of sacrifice to save us from sin and death.
I’ve been listening to Mark Lowry’s stand up for years. It wasn’t until the song had been out for about 10 years that I finally found out that he wrote it. There’s several videos where Mark Lowry explains how he came up with the song. It’s such a powerful testimony.
Buddy Greene played this song in Africa when it was newly created . An acoustic version with guitar and harmonica if I recall his account correctly. As silence emanated when he finished performing , a dignitary /important elder spoke out and said, “play it again.” Buddy knew at this moment the song was very special.
It’s good to see Protestants acknowledge Mary. If you take that and see it deeper you’d come to the full truth. How you explain that talking about Mary show this women who will be the mother of God. The Catholic Church holds that glorification. She is full of grace in all ways you glorify her you glorify God. No teaching puts her above Christ. Just as it would make any good son overjoyed to hear glory of his mother whom he loves more then we ever could.
What hurt me was seeing a Catholic page criticizing this song. They always say Protestants HATE Mary. We have one song talking about her in a respectful manner and they pick up their torches and pitchforks.
That’s because the song is heretical. Mary was already delivered from sin by God. However, the song suggests that she is will one day be delivered, as if she wasn’t already.
@@peterhenryzepeda3484 It's only heretical if you believe Catholic theology. According to the Bible, Jesus is the only sinless person ever to live. Not Mary, not St. Anne, not anybody else. We Protestants respect and revere Mary; what we don't do is elevate her to the status of borderline Deity. To say Protestants hate Mary because they don't embrace Catholic Mariology is a textbook strawman.
Have always loved this song❤❤Thanks so much for your consistent, honest, and biblical clarity you are so gifted with❤❤❤ Love your channel, keep educating souls that are precious to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ ❤❤❤
I can't believe this is the first recommended video that came up for me and I literally heard this song tonight at a church Christmas dinner for the first time and my mum said to me "does this song glorify Mary too much do you think?" So great timing xx
The first time I heard Mark Lowry explain how he came to write it, all I could think was, "What an amazing perspective of Jesus." I hate that this song gets so much criticism, so thanks for this.
For those who revere Mary, this is fine. But, don’t pray to her, don’t worship her, and don’t treat her as an idol; just respect her as the woman who God chose to be the mother of His Son. Why??? This song lyric says to Mary “the child you have delivered will soon deliver you” This shows that Mary is a Sinner too, or Jesus wouldn’t need to deliver her.
No one should be worshipping her, no. As a Catholic, it’s in our catechism not to 😊. But that song line isn’t scripture. It “proves” nothing theologically. It’s in the Bible that Mary said God is her savior. Yes, what Jesus did saved her. All of salvation history that came to pass saved us all, her included. But for Mary is preserved her from original sin in the first place. And she cooperated with that grace in her “yes” to God’s plan. She can be both sinless and saved by Christ at the same time.
God didn’t choose her, he made her. He made his own Mom. He made the most wonderful, loving, and perfect Mom/woman ever created. He didn’t make a bunch of women and then go back and pick the finest from the litter. He knew exactly what he was doing when he made her. Because God is love he also gave her free will. She could have said no to Angel Gabriel, but even with her own free will she said yes. God made her and he made her perfect. You can be made perfect and still say no to God. Look at Adam and Eve. Our Blessed Mother Mary is the new Eve. She said yes to God. As a Catholic, we do not pray to her or worship her. We love her, honor her, and ask her to pray for us. The Hail Mary prayer quotes the Bible and then ends with us asking for her to pray for us.
@@Leo3T that's what doesn't make sense, you ask her to pray for you when she is no longer here in the flesh. You pray to her, you pray to the souls which are no longer on earth rather than God. I would understand if you would ask people to interceede for you that are still here, but you are asking a departed soul for prayer which makes no sense when you can pray to the Father through Jesus directly.
@@Leo3T But how do you know that? And how can you talk about Mary as if she is predestined, yet claim free will? If she has free will, could she not have chosen to not be the perfect mom at any time? Presumable she didn't lose free will after saying yes to Gabriel? Did God also make Noah perfect to save humanity, rather then just finding the one man that still chose of free will to follow God? David was a man after God's own heart, yet still isn't perfect and sins. So what statement could be stronger then that to convince you of Mary's perfection? Scripture records very little about Mary's parenting. If she was perfect, why is more of it not laid out as a role model? Where in the Bible is the Hail Mary quoting?
I just heard this song before watching this. I first heard it sung by a friend who learned it when it was brand new, and she harmonized with her sister while playing acoustic guitar. I could hardly speak after hearing it, my heart so touched with worship for our King. And when I listened to it just before watching this, tears once again welled in my eyes in awe of my Lord and Savior. Spirit-breathed song!
“Mary Did You Know” is my favorite contemporary Christmas song. Maybe in my top three Christmas carols of all time. Without glorifying Mary, this song brings home to me the thoughts and emotions Mary (and Joseph) might have experienced while trying to raise this supernatural Child. Can you imagine how inadequate both of them may have felt? After all the supernatural phenomena surrounding Jesus’ birth and early childhood.
I’m not a huge fan of the song because it feels a bit manipulatively dramatic, but I have no theological issues with it and I suppose the content merits more emotional undertones…I think I just prefer to have an emotional reaction to a song without needing a bunch of rhetorical devices or “mind-blowing” sentences in every single verse. Which is why my favorite hymn is “Where Shepherds Lately Knelt.”
One pretty decent faith film "Paul of Tarsus" has Barnabas and his wife upon first meeting Mary the mother of Jesus kneeling to her in awe, and she chides them gently, "I am just a person like you! Don't kneel to me!" Great scene.
No crying he makes: when I first heard this carol, this struck me funny. In my head the next I heard was “and scared the tar out of his parents…” Who has ever heard of a normal non-crying baby? I appreciate the angle of ancient history. I had not considered that. By the way, English is not my native language, so this was not a childhood carol.
I Iove how humble you are. Teachers that stop being teachable, only teach themselves. This is a problem for pastors who may miss the many things that God could teach them through various mediums including their congregants. Blessings brother.
It's ironic that Mike in his early youthful faith felt it may glorify Mary too much as Catholics actually dislike this song because of its refutation of Catholic theology. The line about "Mary did you know...that the child that you delivered would one day deliver you?" is the one they dislike as they believe Mary was immaculately conceived so had no need of deliverance. I love the song personally.
Wrong. Mary was also saved in catholic teaching (read CCC). Protestants really know so little about catholic teachings… or lie. I hope it is the first.
@@XDomyX OK I'll fix that, retroactively saved by the application of Christ's work on the cross applied before it happened in our earthly time. But they still dislike the song for that line as they don't believe she was waiting to be delivered as it had happened already. Better? Don't be snarky, I can take a correction.
@@XDomyX Look, I'm sorry if you have experienced hostility from protestants in the past and perhaps that has formed your opinions and affected the way that you in turn deal with them. I certainly have witnessed a lot of anti Catholic views online. However, my comment was not meant disrespectfully and I took your correction, attempted to fix my mistake and asked if I was still wrong. You could've just said "its ok, it was borne out of a lack of knowledge rather than malice, thanks for fixing it," or something similar or explained further. Ironic that you chastise me for generalising by the way when that's precisely what you did in your first comment, very explicitly! I would point out too that having spent a few years attending Catholic churches (and still do occasionally,) that the accusation of knowing little about the faith can be equally said of many Catholics. Poor catechesis has been a problem in many countries for decades in the CC. My comment may have been wrong but it was more due to the imprecision of my language. The song from a Catholic point of view is wrong in the sense that Jesus will not "one day deliver her." She doesn't need that, being sinless due to the retroactive application of grace when she was conceived. She was saved already, recieving the merits of salvation outside of the bounds of time and space. Many lifelong Catholics would even struggle to articulate that teaching about exactly how Mary was concieved sinlessly. Many when polled don't understand that the immaculate conception is referring to Mary's conception not Jesus's and shockingly high numbers when polled do not believe in Christ being present body, blood, soul and divinity in the eucharist. Huge numbers are unsure about basic concepts such as exactly when the Pope speaks infallibly and what they must submit to or are free to disregard. So yes, many Protestants know very little about the Catholic faith but that charge can also be levelled back at Catholics. Whatever you think of me I see you as a brother in Christ, please give the benefit of the doubt to ppl you are conversing online with. Don't throw away your chance to perhaps educate others further and build bridges. I'm really not far from you on many things, you would be surprised at my willingness to listen and engage with Catholicism. Anyway, enjoy the rest of Christmas.
I absolutely LOVE “Mary, did you know?” The best version I’ve heard is -surprisingly- by Pentatonix. They really put the passion in the song… which is needed when paired with the lyrics. So beautiful!🥲❤️
I was raised a Protestant and thought Catholics worshipped Mary. I have since reverted to Catholicism and now understand the truth about Mary and it has certainly brought me closer to God. Everything about Mary (the Hail Mary prayer in particular) glorifies Christ not Mary.
I’ve loved this song since the first time I heard it. The Christmas story is about the birth of Jesus but the whole story is about our Savior’s death on the cross for all of mankind. What an amazingly beautiful gift that we do not deserve. God bless and Merry Christmas!
One of my favorites! Truly declares our feeble understanding we all have of who our Savior really is, before it unfolds in our lives. If we walk with him!
🥲❤🥲 I used to feel sceptical about this song as well, a little like I felt about Catholics praying the Rosary... But recently I discovered the exact same thing about the Rosary as you so beautifully explained about this wonderful song! It is actually all about Jesus, and bringing us closer to Him! ❤❤❤
I agree, but must ask why mother is capitalized? I am not very good at grammar but does that not reference how titles or pronouns referring to God are capitalized? Sorry to nitpick, but there is a lot of Mary worship that happens, and little things like this might be hanging around from that.
@@viperstriker4728 The ancient Greek, from which the title was originally given, was written in all capital, majuscule letters. Lowercase, miniscule letters only came into being centuries after. So questions about capital letters are more modern issues. Titles are conventionally capitalized in English, especially titles that involve proper nouns. I don’t think capitalization or non-capitalization has any major bearing on due or undue honor for Mary. If Jesus is really God, and Mary is really the mother of Jesus…..
Thanks Mike. Very good walk through of the song. I have always really liked this song. It's so packed and condensed with who Jesus really is. You get this Wow! feeling of wonder and awe!
Im so glad you made this video. I have heard in the past that this sing was glorifying Mary but when you actually pay attention to the lyrics its glorifying King Jesus. Amen. The lyrics still give me chills. Glory to God in the highest!!!
Look up the version Jordan Smith sang on The Voice. Stunning! Many non-Christians heard this song for the first time ever. He gave glory to God by singing this and went on to win The Voice.
I can answer that without even listening to this video. No, it absolutely does not glorify Mary. In fact, it insults R. Catholics to no end, because they don’t like the insinuation that Mary isn’t all-knowing plus is in need of salvation, herself. (Yeah, Catholics, tell me again how you don’t worship Mary as co-deity….) No, it glorifies Jesus Christ the whole way through.❤️
Catholicism wouldn't disagree that Mary isn't all-knowing and didn't need salvation. She doesn't know everything and was saved by Christ. Please be careful when you're tempted to mock. It's in bad taste to begin with, but being incorrect while mocking is tough to see.
@@bufficliff8978 Not mocking R. Catholics. Just relating what the ones I know, including my brother who was R. C. to the end, have said about this song. It makes them very uncomfortable. To them she is the Theotokos which in their minds and theology, required her to be sinless, herself. That she was herself conceived by the Holy Spirit with no human father, just like Jesus, so as to be without original sin. This song is saying that Mary needed the deliverance from sin by this One, this Child. They take issue with that. And I took issue with my brother and others I have grown up with declaring that they don’t worship Mary, just venerate her. In my experience and observation, I couldn’t tell the difference.
Catholicism does not teach that Mary is omniscient. I’m not one of them, but some Catholics take issue with the song because scripturally there’s so much she did know. She was prepared by God. She was visited by an angel and told things that would take place. That’s the only reason I’ve heard for Catholics not liking the song.
It's nice when protestants realize the beauty and significance of the Virgin Mary's role in God's plan for salvation. There really is no need for some Protestant groups to fear acknowledgement of her obvious holiness and importance for all believers. Christ willingly became incarnate (flesh) through Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. She is often venerated (not worshipped) and is in no way equal to Christ, but loved and appreciated by many Christians. I have been a Protestant for 40 years and dearly appreciate the Mother of Jesus.
The song is awesome. Where a lot of people have a problem with is with the Catholic Church. They have people praying to Mary and that is a no no. God shares His Glory with No Man, period. Salvation comes from Jesus. Alone and when you receive revelation knowledge of Him as your personal Savior, you Adore Him. You love Him,and you seek to Know Him more. He is Awesome,

That's exactly the problem with man-made doctrine: it stems from paganism.
"God is a spirit" (words of Jesus in John 4:23)
"Nobody has seen God" (John 1:18, 6:46)
God was IN Jesus, INDWELLING him, as Jesus himself makes clear in John 14:10-11.
Read and believe the words of Jesus.
Not the doctrines of MEN.
"When Jesus came into the coasts of Cæsarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying
"Who do men say that I, the son of man, am?" And they said: "Some say that you are John the Baptist: some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets".
He asked them:
*But who do you say that I am*
And Simon Peter answered and said:
*You are the Christ, the Son of the living God* And Jesus answered and said unto him: *Blessed are you* Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood has not revealed it unto you, but my Father who is in heaven"
(Matthew 16:13-17)

The Gospel is already in the Scriptures. Mary knew exactly who Jesus was.
@@jeffrachelburkhalter3783 there is literally no basis for that ssumption, since nobody but the thief on the cross figured it out before He rose again.

Yes, I'm sure there was a lot she did not know - even though she knew in her head that He was God. But how it looked - a different matter.
A human mind cannot take all of that in! I'm sure she was protected in that way. Otherwise, I think she might've lost her mind. @@beckypetersen2680
I’ve seen people attack it recently from the other side for questioning Mary’s knowledge. “Of course she knew! This song is insulting as it undermines her intelligence and it’s anti-Biblical because it counters Gabriel’s announcement!”
Obviously the song is presented rhetorically from an awe-inspired Believer to the woman who bore and raised Him.
"But she also didn't know all the specific details"
Oh? How exactly do YOU know all the specific details? God chose Mary. How can you presume she did not know more than any other human ever knows, about her baby, the Son of God?
She knew but she didn't fully comprehend, she knew her baby was conceived by the Holy Spirit but there's no way she could have fully understood who Jesus was. I think it's a wonderful song that expresses beautifully what it was probably like for her ..
By saying that Mary herself needs to be delivered, it makes it clear she is a person like all of us; a sinner in need of a savior. It humanizes rather than glorifies her.
Good observation.
Does it? The Immaculate Conception doesn't mean Mary didn't need a savior. Mary herself testified that God is her savior (Luke 1:47). Rather, God's saving grace was given to her preemptively, saving her from committing sins in the first place.
She isn’t a sinner. Based of tradition of the churches she was an immaculate conception of God’s grace.

Yes even Mary needed Jesus to get into heaven.
And Jesus is always available, thanks to God
@YankeeWoodcraft Mary was a jew and that's why she has salvation not because she is more important.

Mr. Mark Lowry is an amazing songwriter. He is a hilarious comedian, but to hear him tell how he wrote this song is amazing. I have always loved this song. Merry Christmas!
I understood this song first time I heard it. It really made me emotional. It still gives me chills all over. It’s the best song I knew.
@YTMikeWinger why?
I truly Love that song. Amazing Grace and Carol of the birds. Mary did you know makes me cry.
Love Jesus ❤, this song is wonderful. He rule the nation and he is the perfekt Lamb, he is the big I'm.
Mark Lowry and Buddy Green wrote this wonderful song!! They are Godly men who were inspired by our Lord!! Best Christmas song EVER!!! Shout out to all of the Gaither group! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
Blessed is Mary amongst all women.
By grace
@@nicholastrudeau7581 Absolutely.
Amen! Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.
I do really love this song. The lyrics are so true and that truth is a beautiful, humbling awe-inspiring thing to behold and take into your heart and pray on. I thank Jesus and the Father for this most wonderful gift of sacrifice to save us from sin and death.
Ave Maria, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
As silence emanated when he finished performing , a dignitary /important elder spoke out and said, “play it again.”
Buddy knew at this moment the song was very special.
@@peterhenryzepeda3484 you have 0 biblical basis to say this. I feel terrible that a song supposed to uplift Jesus touched your idol.
ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER!!!
My favorite Christmas song! I saw Mark perform this song in 2020 at Carnegie Hall! Treasured moment! God bless❤️✝️🙌
For those who revere Mary, this is fine. But, don’t pray to her, don’t worship her, and don’t treat her as an idol; just respect her as the woman who God chose to be the mother of His Son.
Why???
This song lyric says to Mary “the child you have delivered will soon deliver you”
This shows that Mary is a Sinner too, or Jesus wouldn’t need to deliver her.
Was looking for this, blessings
Apologies if I'm "glorifying Mike," 😅 but i feel like i could listen to him all day. He's so well spoken, relatable, and has rock-solid theology
Jon Harris of Conversations That Matter may be of help too. 😉
His theology is bogus
“Mary Did You Know” is my favorite contemporary Christmas song. Maybe in my top three Christmas carols of all time. Without glorifying Mary, this song brings home to me the thoughts and emotions Mary (and Joseph) might have experienced while trying to raise this supernatural Child. Can you imagine how inadequate both of them may have felt? After all the supernatural phenomena surrounding Jesus’ birth and early childhood.
Give all the glory to the Boy of boys, the King of kings, the Lord of lords!
Shalom.
May the Lord be with you mike and with all. 🙏🙏
Such a beautiful song!!
Nice job! God bless you brother Mike and your ministry! To God be All the Glory!
I listen to this song all through the year...not just at Christmas. I love it so much. ❤
@@littleboots9800 Im not snarky, just dont like misinformation about catholic teachings. Only truth matters. And also, please dont generalize. Thanks
@@littleboots9800 Thank you. Also wishing all the best.
I absolutely LOVE “Mary, did you know?” The best version I’ve heard is -surprisingly- by Pentatonix. They really put the passion in the song… which is needed when paired with the lyrics. So beautiful!🥲❤️
Immaculate Mary, your praised we sing.
Fun Fact: This song was written by Mark Lowry (Who is amazing and hilarious btw). He definitely did not have glorifying Mary in mind.
Came here to say the same! If you knew the guy who wrote it, there'd be no questioning whether it honored God😊
Keep up the good work Mike. As a Catholic I admire the work you. Always looking to bring people back to Christ! God bless you and your ministry
I just don't get how anyone could think this song is not honoring to Christ. Lovely song.
No
Yes@@SeekTheCross
Interestingly, the Muslim has Rosary too. So the pope and the Roman Catholic ecumenical ambition is getting closer. 😂
@@andywong9847 Muslims do not have the Rosary. It’s about meditating on the gospel.
Yes! It’s about the gospel. Ave Maria, Vive Christus Rex.
Christmas is my second favorite Holiday!
(Just a reminder that calling Mary the "Mother of God" is more a comment on the nature of Jesus than on the nature of Mary.)
Yes! Every teaching about Mary is ultimately about Him.
Mary Did You Know? is the only Christmas song that makes me cry every time, but especially now as I hold my own newborn son ❤
Congratulations on your sweet boy!
“Honey wake up! Pastor Mike uploaded”
Thanks Mike.
Very good walk through of the song. I have always really liked this song. It's so packed and condensed with who Jesus really is. You get this Wow! feeling of wonder and awe!
Mary, Did You Know is arguably the greatest Christmas song ever written.
Im so glad you made this video. I have heard in the past that this sing was glorifying Mary but when you actually pay attention to the lyrics its glorifying King Jesus. Amen. The lyrics still give me chills. Glory to God in the highest!!!
If you can sing a song to Mary, you can ask her for prayer
What's her address?
@TheRastacabbage Heaven , but we only have one direct line to the father through his son Jesus
@@Repent.Believe.obeyJesus Mary's address is heaven?
Very moving singing this song as part of a church choir 23 to 25 years ago with organ and string instruments. Beautiful.
oh don't worry the catholics have elevated her above Yesuha.
Absolutely not.
You have absolutely no idea what catholics believe
Look up the version Jordan Smith sang on The Voice. Stunning! Many non-Christians heard this song for the first time ever. He gave glory to God by singing this and went on to win The Voice.
What are your thoughts on "Biden did you know" by Babylon Bee?🤣
Is this really a thing? 😅 I'll have to look this up
@@sarahfaith316 it’s worth it!
This is my absolute favourite Christmas carol!
I can answer that without even listening to this video. No, it absolutely does not glorify Mary. In fact, it insults R. Catholics to no end, because they don’t like the insinuation that Mary isn’t all-knowing plus is in need of salvation, herself. (Yeah, Catholics, tell me again how you don’t worship Mary as co-deity….)
No, it glorifies Jesus Christ the whole way through.❤️
Catholicism wouldn't disagree that Mary isn't all-knowing and didn't need salvation.
@@pennyc8572 Mary had a father that’s not what the immaculate conception is
It's nice when protestants realize the beauty and significance of the Virgin Mary's role in God's plan for salvation.
The truth is Mary did not know
I've always loved this song, especially Kathy Mattea's performance of it. It's probably my favorite Christmas song, along with O Holy Night.
