OK, I agree with you, but I have been using it for 2 months; it does work well for holding a RING doorbell to brick outside of the home, holding rugs to the floor, and holding surge strips to the underside of a desk, as well as holding apple tv or Roku to the back of the tv. But like you say, not reusable at all and fails on some claims. But it is good for a few specific uses-cheers on another great review, my brother.
That was a lot of tape for the painting! I used a similar product but they claimed it's safe for painted surfaces. Obviously it wasn't and when I peeled it off the wall, the paint also came off. In my experience, it's basically just a semi-permanent mounting tape. You cant reuse it and putting something on and off the tape (e.g a remote control) only works a few times.
It looks like mounting squares that I used to work with for mounting posters... I worked at Staples Printing center and mounting squares were a cheaper solution for people not willing to spend a huge sum on Staples Print center Mounted boards..
Its handy when you need to retrieve something from a tight space. I wrap it around a grabber to rescue my lost remotes, glasses ect. Unfortunately I was dissatisfied with it. It didn't perform as advertised. One truth stated, IT'S PERMANENT ON PAINTED SURFACES! Trust me.
I've seen similar tapes here in the UK and same issues they stick when they want to, I think its similar to the double sided gorilla tape but at least they don't claim that it's reusable lol
I am such a sucker for ads. I don’t know why, but I always believe them and I’m so disappointed when they don’t meet my expectations. But I’m starting to check independent reviews such as yours, to get the real results. I was going to buy this tape, but after watching this video, I changed my mind. Thank you. Thank you for saving me from wasting money. I just subscribed and I look forward to watching more of your in-depth testing and honest reporting of the results.
If you want good tape, you gotta use UHB or VHB tape by 3M. UHB tape is the best tape out there. Nothing sticks like it. It is permanent. They build tractor trailers with the stuff. I know of a guy who attached solar panels to the top of his motor home with the stuff.
@@alexiswilson3769 if I am not mistaken, it's removable with citrus. You also get what you pay for. It ain't cheap. But no other tape even comes close.
@@Ryanrulesok if you are talking about funtack-like (usually blue or yellow) putty-it DOES work for some uses. The problem is that this stuff is oil putty, so it eventually stains whatever it is attached to. So for example, if you put a poster up(one of the more popular uses for this stuff), both the wall paint and the poster end up with oil spots on them.
Make sure you apply it a good stable surface. Hung a mirror and everything stuck together. Only problem was that the paint and all peeled directly from the drywall.
@@AcornElectron There are so many birth control options. How is that not choice? Abortion has always been legal for rape, incest & mother's life in danger. So that leaves the everyday woman. Are we so oblivious that we can't figure out how to make the choice to use birth control? There is the day after pill as well. So if you don't use birth control at the time, you can purchase over the counter medication that will stop you from becoming pregnant. Between all the kinds of birth control & the day after pill. Doesn't that cover everything? Abortion is also a surgery that disrupts a normal function for the female body. We are made to have children. Our bodies are not made to be treated to something that is so violent and not as safe as planned parenthood leads people to believe. After 3 abortions a woman can no longer carry a child to term. Holes are often made in the uterus during abortion that will kill the mother if she isn't transported in time to a hospital that can help immediately. Why are people pushing that having a violent procedure should be used as birth control? What about personal responsibility? Your choices should be made before you have sex. I also don't understand why this should be an issue for society, or the government. Your sex life is just that. Your's. The government aka the people should not have your personal responsibility shoved in our faces. Nor should we pay for something that has zero to do with the constitution of the United States. There is no where in that document that says the government & the people should pay for those who make bad decisions in life. There are consequences to choices. People need to deal with their own consequences. Making the whole country deal with your dirty laundry will only continue to make people less knowledgeable and more dependent on the government. I've been in this scenario. At the age of 18. I was pregnant. My boyfriend and I wanted to keep our son. Adoption was not for me or him. We fought to keep our son. We fought for each other. We took responsibility. And almost 37 years later we are still together and we have more children. And because of our experience we taught our children about personal responsibility. And that society is not obligated to you for your own personal decisions in life. Another abortion argument. There is not too many people on the planet. In fact there are not enough children being born to take over for the jobs that will be available. Just because there are people who want women to have abortions for their own personal gain doesn’t make it right. Planned parenthood deliberately builds near black communities. That's as disgusting & racist as you can get. They only offer abortions. They do not offer anything else for woman's health. Abortions are not healthy mentally, emotionally, physically or spiritually. They haunt women for the rest of their lives. The only reasons to make abortions not just legal but legal up until and through birth is for the organs. Planned parenthood has been making millions and millions of dollars from abortions by selling the organs. The organs that are not supposed to be human. Their just cells with human DNA. We share the same DNA as a banana. But when we procreate we don't get bananas. We get human beings. The organs are human, and have been used by scientists and pharmaceutical companies illegally. Baby organs are used in vaccines. Planned parenthood was caught on video and all their customers for organs was found out. The people & organizations who bought the organs were prosecuted. Except planned parenthood. They get millions of dollars every year from the government and private donations, plus the organs. They are the super power in abortions so no one touches them. Even when they break the law. The OJ Simpson of the celebrity that abortion has become. Abortions are not good for women, society, and especially the babies. Black people need only to look to Margaret Sanger for the reasons they make up only 13% of the entire country. Margaret Sanger a member of the KKK and founder of planned parenthood. Her goal was genocide of black people. Now we have people crying abortion is a choice. No it's a surgery designed specifically to kill human beings.
@@traczebabe ok, I read your small essay on the subject and I’m still not swayed sorry. A lot of incredible but prescient things have their roots in dark places. Doesn’t mean they’re not useful now. All your arguments fall down in the case of, female is not expecting to have sex, female is raped and can’t ‘solve’ the problem with a morning after pill due to whatever mad circumstance (because if you think everyone has the same access that you or I do then you’re misleading yourself). So what then? Have the illegitimate child and put up for adoption? Or female has 9 months of her life stolen (not to mention the hormonal and physical changes undergone)? These don’t seem legitimate options. Of course there should be limits. Once the cluster of cells passes the foetus stage then yes, it’s a person. Not a breathing person but certainly a sentient and living being. My point should really be this.... I don’t know or care about the backend of the business side of it, I just believe that your body and life is your own.
Thank you for all the time you put in testing these products. One thing i learned from watching reviews on these type of products is that i better pay more and get the real deal.
Yeah, I just saw his "short" thumbnail for this video on the UA-cam front page. If he showed the thumbnail with him in those glasses, it would have irresistible appeal.
Loved this entire video! The alien glasses were awesome! And their idea of putting an iPad up on the back of the seat seems like it’s just inviting someone to try to break in and take it (along with whatever it’s still attached to!)!
I have a piece of sticky silicone that came with my htc vive. That little pad they sent is really good for what it is. Definitely isn't as sticky as that alien tape you showed, but it's massively easier to use and totally reuseable. I just have to make sure to clean it till it feels perfectly smooth to make sure no dust is left and it works like new. Wish I knew what HTC sends in their vive kits cause it's been nice for sticking USB hubs onto my desk so they don't move around.
This has been used for decades in the RC industry (remote control)!! They call it servo tape, and can usually buy it for $3 per roll.. if you can still find a hobby shop thats open ):
I have alien tape and it is by far one of the best products I've ever used. I recently ran out and am reordering it again. Beats the crap out of commando tapes. Not sure why you had such bad luck with it. I've never had to reuse mine. But as far as using it.......I've had nothing but amazing success. Commando tape was hit or miss. Eventually things I've used it with would often fall off. I had cord covers on my walls to hide a bunch of cords from my TVs, media players, etc. The original sticky surfaces didn't work. Commando tape worked sporadically but over time, they would all start falling off and I had to readjust weekly. I used Alien tape and since putting it on last year, it stuck hard as a rock. Never had to readjust. Same with tools that I had mounted with commando tape that kept falling. Not with Alien tape. Put a bunch of door kick plates and push plates that I connected to the top and bottom of doors. Would never trust Command tape. Instead of screwing it on, I have used Alien Tape. Has been 6 months. They remain as steads as if I screwed them in to the door. I'm a believer. Maybe you got a dud or expecting a lot from an "exaggerated commercial." I would never try to mount a heavy iron weight in the baking sun. But all my alien tape needs have never failed me when other products have.
Yes... Like I'm loving it... With the first picture I put on the wall of course it was crooked and then when I fixed it it took off a piece of the drywall. However I was able to cover it when I was straightening up the painting and then just was more careful with the other. Overall I would not use it in the future to put pictures up and such only because it is so strong if you don't get it straight on the first try type of thing 🤣☝🏽
@@cuteypie102 Alien tape will rip off your drywall if you're not careful how you remove it. It is much stronger than command strip tape as well. So it will definitely stick hard. You want to carefully pull down and not out. Also "goo gone" works well. Spray or rub on and it will take off the stickiness so you can remove the tape. Just go easy otherwise you will have the mishap you had with the picture frame.
I'm wondering if the metal weight was just too hot for the tape rather than it being too heavy, I also wonder if it's better (though unrealistic) to clamp your item on the surface for like an hour, like you would with glue
I had the same issue with FlexTape. I used it to fix two punctures in a pool floaty...but left the tape side faced up in the sun. The vinyl got so hot that it melted the adhesive and the air pressure forced forced air through the weakened seal.
I think that you're both right about heat being the key. Heat makes things melt. That metal weight also would have stored up and incredible amount of heat.
The weakness is in how this gel tape stretches too easily. It's great for flexible and conforming to surfaces but that also makes it a liability for weight and heat stress - it'll stretch until it fails
@@alcopower5710 It's cheap! Small rolls are like 6 or 7 bucks at Home Depot. 3M VHB has been holding the solar panel to the roof of my van for the last several months.
Serious question: I have a mirror that I bought from Home Depot, square. I tried with some 3m tape AND Alien Tape, to tape it to my bedroom wall, above the portable vanity sink. With both, the mirror fell down after a couple of days (no breakage, knock on wood). I may need someone to put classic supports. Based on what I'm describing, any feedback is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
James your videos are awesome! Keep up the amazing work you do on every single video! I have avoided many products based on your reviews, thank you man!
Thanks so much for this review! My wife came home with a box of this stuff today, and seeing the "as seen on TV" logo triggered my "press X for doubt" spidey sense. Your in-depth review really convinced me to tell the wife to return this ASAP!
A heads up: these types of tape do NOT work well with high heat (or cold temperatures) - the heat makes it lose cohesion. I've used a similar tape for all kinds of applications and it works great as long as you don't have it in direct sunlight. During hot Summer days, it starts to fail.
"Cohesion" is when an adhesive, sicks to "Itself". The clue, is in the "CO". It is not the ability to sick to something, but to sick to "Itself". In other words, it may well stick to things, but it will fail, by parting from "Itself". Here, endeth the lesson!
Tyler from Tylertube reviewed this and actually put it on his painted wall. Although it didn't pull up the paint there was a big bubble. He also took the tape off very gingerly and he didn't hang anything up, he just tried a small piece of tape on the wall. Don't use this in your house unless you plan on repainting after using.
If it's used to attach an object, you couldn't peel it gingerly because you couldn't get to the edge of the tape to peel. Then it's got to be ripped asunder along with the wall surface or object surface, whichever comes first-
"In case you're wondering, this isn't my shampoo. I don't really need it." Funniest part of the whole video. Still though, I love the style you've got going, especially when you're rocking those glasses.
Been using this tape to hold up some RGB light strip rails. It's worked pretty well. The only one that failed and fell off was because I hadn't cleaned off the original 3M tape from the railing so that's what failed. To be fair the RGB strips + the rails might weigh as much as 100-150gr and don't get nudged or wet. They do tend to get slightly warm though. I've also used it for hanging plastified paper signeage with good success. I'm unsure of how it would behave in sub-zero temperatures though.
The logic behind any kind of tapes holding things is always the tape's size and surface area related to the weight of the object that it's holding and the surface area that it's in contact with each other. In other words "More tape + light objects and more surface area contact = good hold/bond"
I love watching his reviews. He does his best to follow the instructions and gives his pro's and con's. As always great video. Not use why any would believe these tape do everything they advertise....
This stuff is made with the same ingredients as commercial rat and mouse traps except the toxic ingredients are removed. In other words it's strong and expensive fly paper on a roll which is totally worthless. The packaging and advertising of the product is probably worth more than the actual product itself.
Yes! I love his voice. And, he provides good comic relief after a stressful day.. . especially in videos like this one when the products are basically just crap.
ok direct sun doesn't work, but water also loosens it. so it can't be in the sun, it can't be in the rain, and can't be in the snow.. . i mean i guess maybe a lightweight wreath under a covered porch, but if "outdoors" is just a technicality that means extremely specific sheltered/climate controlled conditions then i'm thinking a decent size hank of 3M would do it..
I've used AT to keep my carpet corner from curling up (carpet lays on top of the main carpet). I've also used AT to secure my watchband. So far so good.
Hi I love your videos and I design tape for a living the surface and the heat applied to the substrate can make or break tape, also tape is at its highest strength after its had time to wet out. The adhesive on the tape is a viscoelastic and as such it will move and fill in microscopic gaps to improve its strength over time generally when I'm testing tape the minimum time I will weight to test shear, will be 30 min what you are testing is only one property of the tape's strength you were generally testing tack which is the tapes initial strength. testing shear right after it is applied is some what of a cheap test as just because a tape is not initially tacky doesn't mean it's strength wont grow over time. also reusable tapes are usually meant to be repositionable meaning the tack will still be high enough after tacking it off to reapply. As I know you are someone who listens and improves their testing methods after education I would invite you to look up Pressure sensative testing methods or PSTC gridlines to under stand why some of your tape may have failed.
My girlfriend bought some brand of this about a year ago. It definitely has its uses, and has some situations it's horrible at, and you're never gonna know until you try lol. I use it to hold an audio DAC and USB strip to my desk, and it holds it to the side of the desk well. The key is only use it on things that are flat, dry, and cheap :p
Alien tape is some of the best stuff we've ever bought. Living in an RV full time, we use it everywhere. You do have to be careful about the surface you use it on. Reusability is about 50-50, it seems to depend if whatever it was on 'infects' it.
3m also doesn't rip the paint/finish (when following removal instructions).. it obviously doesn't hold 17lbs, but it's enough for seasonal holiday decorations (which is what it looks like this is best for anyway)..
This is pretty much clear double sided tape, use it like you would use regular double sided foam tape, I personally buy it in big rolls from LLPT on amazon and use it as cheap "servo tape" to hold down electronics on rc cars since it adds a bjt of cushioning when the car lands rather than being screwd on.
Thx for this review. I saw the ad and went to the internet to see what it was made of, and found your video. As I suspected, it was more hype than actual reality. Thx for saving me those $20!
It says do not leave the tape in direct sunlight, when not in use, I use it as a seal around all the windows and under the doors, it has been there for over a year with no problems.
Funny that you mentioned that. I was thinking, while just watching this video for the first time today, that this tape would be good in lieu of glue on crafts. In your opinion, do you think it's strong enough to hold crafts together on its own?
The new alien tape commercial, literally lists every purpose that no one would ever use alien tape for. Like sticking a brick to a brick wall. Tapes your children’s bowl to their high chair, taping furniture to the ground. Hanging pictures. Hanging weight on the wall. Etc.
I teach at an elementary school and this kind of tape (and its generic versions) is literally the ONLY tape that will keep ANY posters on the painted cinderblock walls. The other teachers are jealous of my mysterious posters that never fall down.
purchased this today, followed instructions in an attempt to repair a torn plastic tarp over my garden, It is abot 30 degrees outside and windy. I could not get it to adhere to each of the plastic (one on top of the other) this was the sole purpose of the purchase. I am very disappointed that Ive wasted my money. I know thats not alot for most people, but on a fixed income, thats a 20.00 trip to the grocery store.
I'd try using 100% silicone caulking, and use the tape to hold in place long enough for it to set. Then you could take a blowtorch to it and it wouldn't release on its own.
I use it in the motorhome to keep things in place like the soda Stream and various containers. I use it on a wall-mounted rack to hold miscellaneous items and remote controls next to my chair. It doesn’t last forever only a few months. Eventually the rack will fall off but it leaves no damage to the fragile wall. Overall while this product is no miracle, we love it. I would highly recommend this being in everybody’s MacGyver box.
I never understand the need for strong tape to hold up your pictures on a wall where you want to not damage it when you remove the picture. Just use 3M velcro adhesive strips. Live savers and completely removeable.
Funny; I saw this in a hardware store last week, almost picked it up. Then I thought about it for a sec and went, "Nah." Glad I followed that instinct. lol! You want fastening solutions to be definitive one way or another, either permanent or non-permanent. Never maybe-permanent.
It certainly works for me, hanging pic and can take off wall after 3 months with no damage. Works also works in -25 celsius, crafts, cement and wood as stated.
Why didn't you use a level on your painting? Did well with 2 GPSs but the dashboards are flat. Going to try Alien Tape on the back of a rear view mirror to hold up a dashcam. I put a cable a descrambler under my girlfriend's flat screen TV & it only held overnight. Weight, about 2 lbs.

I just subscribed and I look forward to watching more of your in-depth testing and honest reporting of the results.
its ALIEN when one of these as seen on tv products work.
Hey oh!
I use mouldable glue (putty) it's a lot better for putting stuff up
@@Ryanrulesok if you are talking about funtack-like (usually blue or yellow) putty-it DOES work for some uses.
You used tape to hang a mirror? Ballsy.
You’re doing it in red hot conditions. Outdoor in London is very different to outdoor in Vegas. But yeah, not as advertised
@@AbortionIsMurderAlways anytime no-choice-for-women.
Which London? First one I think of is in Ontario, then England.
@Sans Handlebars you don't know when he actually recorded this video

Those glasses at the beginning was the reasons why everyone kept watching 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, I just saw his "short" thumbnail for this video on the UA-cam front page. If he showed the thumbnail with him in those glasses, it would have irresistible appeal.
“It went pretty much exactly how I expected...which is not good” 😂😂😂

Loved this entire video! The alien glasses were awesome!
And their idea of putting an iPad up on the back of the seat seems like it’s just inviting someone to try to break in and take it (along with whatever it’s still attached to!)!
Excellent point
Excellent product review. Thorough, informative and entertaining. Great job!
I used to have Alien on tape, but then I upgraded to DVD

Yeah I was wondering if it needs to set. Command hooks say to let it sit for a day, right?
The weakness is in how this gel tape stretches too easily. It's great for flexible and conforming to surfaces but that also makes it a liability for weight and heat stress - it'll stretch until it fails
Per their commercial, the kid's bowl has now become a permanent part of the high chair tray.
You need 3m vhb tape. It is the best stuff in the world and comes in different types. This stuff is so strong they use it to build trucks.
How much does it cost?
@@alcopower5710 It's cheap! Small rolls are like 6 or 7 bucks at Home Depot. 3M VHB has been holding the solar panel to the roof of my van for the last several months.
Ty
Not for painted surfaces! 😂
I was just about to order this tape, when it occurred to me to see if you had reviewed it. Thanks for saving me $27 bucks!
Many types of tape will not stick to cold surfaces.

Still though, I love the style you've got going, especially when you're rocking those glasses.
I'm so glad I watched this. I was about to buy it for my paintings. I don't want to damage my walls. Thank you!
This guy’s the modern equivalent of David Horowitz. I love it!
Man i dont even buy made for tv stuff but i love living vicariously and your videos are the best! Keep up the great work james huge fan ☺️
The logic behind any kind of tapes holding things is always the tape's size and surface area related to the weight of the object that it's holding and the surface area that it's in contact with each other.
In other words "More tape + light objects and more surface area contact = good hold/bond"
Yeah, if he had used a completely flat weight with two strips of tape, I think it would have held longer, especially if it wasn't in direct sunlight.
Woooooo a new review. And James come on you didn’t tell me a new video was coming out today lol. Love the channel keep up the great work and stay safe
Like those lint rollers

I don’t think claims of outdoor use are meant to cover direct mid day sun in a desert.
But they say water loosens it....what could possibly happen when it rains then?
Yeah, using the tape with the weight on direct sunlight with a lot of heat wasnt the brightest idea
What constitutes outdoor use then? What if he wanted to use it to mount a camera or something that got direct sunlight and was 7 lbs? Just saying...
ok direct sun doesn't work, but water also loosens it. so it can't be in the sun, it can't be in the rain, and can't be in the snow.. . i mean i guess maybe a lightweight wreath under a covered porch, but if "outdoors" is just a technicality that means extremely specific sheltered/climate controlled conditions then i'm thinking a decent size hank of 3M would do it..
Everyone is failing to point out that the weight heats up much more than most items would in direct sunlight. He couldn't even hold it.
Okay, those sunglasses are seriously freaking me out!

Had not seen this on the market. I will be checking this stuff out. Thanks for sharing the information! I also am gonna check out the Nano tape too.
"It is reusable! Here, take 3 rolls of it, just in case!" -- They should rebrand it "Mixed Messages Tape (Water Optional, Maybe)"

I was thinking about buying some but had my doubts. Thanks for confirming that it's not worth $20 bucks. Your video is very entertaining too. 🤣
I would rather use the 3m sticky hooks then this tape 😂 get the same result just easier on the pocket book 🤣
And it comes off
3m also doesn't rip the paint/finish (when following removal instructions).. it obviously doesn't hold 17lbs, but it's enough for seasonal holiday decorations (which is what it looks like this is best for anyway)..
@@girliboi yeah they can't hold much, but they do work for small things, a lot better then that tape 😂
Definitely not buying now- thanks for this honest review!

Yay wanted to see this.
I use it to hold my craft projects together until the E6000 glue has set. That all it's basically good for in my opinion.
Funny that you mentioned that. I was thinking, while just watching this video for the first time today, that this tape would be good in lieu of glue on crafts. In your opinion, do you think it's strong enough to hold crafts together on its own?
Sir that was an awesome review.

Excellent! Thanks for covering it ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really appreciate it!
The new alien tape commercial, literally lists every purpose that no one would ever use alien tape for. Like sticking a brick to a brick wall. Tapes your children’s bowl to their high chair, taping furniture to the ground. Hanging pictures. Hanging weight on the wall. Etc.
LOL, It's so true.
Bailey still appreciating fine art.. I'm SCREECHING .. 😩😩😩😂😂😂😂❤️
I teach at an elementary school and this kind of tape (and its generic versions) is literally the ONLY tape that will keep ANY posters on the painted cinderblock walls. The other teachers are jealous of my mysterious posters that never fall down.
When our art teacher has to hang up students' work, she uses inside out tolls of masking or frog tape. Works very well.
Ever heard of fun tac?
purchased this today, followed instructions in an attempt to repair a torn plastic tarp over my garden, It is abot 30 degrees outside and windy. I could not get it to adhere to each of the plastic (one on top of the other) this was the sole purpose of the purchase. I am very disappointed that Ive wasted my money. I know thats not alot for most people, but on a fixed income, thats a 20.00 trip to the grocery store.
I have found that when it comes to living in hot climates like vegas, a lot of adhesives do not last.

Thanks for the thorough review. I almost didn't want to watch it because it was like 15 minutes long, but it covered everything well.
Funny; I saw this in a hardware store last week, almost picked it up. Then I thought about it for a sec and went, "Nah." Glad I followed that instinct. lol! You want fastening solutions to be definitive one way or another, either permanent or non-permanent. Never maybe-permanent.
