Thank you for an excellent tutorial! I changed my headlight switch at an off-road event in the dark using your video & only a headlamp on my head as illumination. The part where I had to pause the vid to see exactly how you oriented the new switch for installation ... was key! If it weren't for this video I would have thought it was a huge job that I'm incapable of. Just 1 question: Why did you remove the upper dash trim? I found that it wasn't necessary & wouldn't have made the job any easier.

    UPDATE !!!
I just finished replacing the light switch on my '96 Cherokee. I have replaced similar switches on different trucks. The switch on my jeep COULD NOT BE REPLACED FROM BELOW THE DASH. I pulled lower dash and began the process as I have done before. With the retainer nut removed there was maybe an inch of slack wiring harness allowing the switch barely an inch of movement. No way to disconnect and remove the old switch, and definitely no way to install the new switch. I started pulling down the far left idiot light panel, discovered that is riveted into place. Then went after the instrument panel. pulled instrument panel bezel, and instrument panel which also required removing trim from the steering column around ignition switch/hazard light panel. (you will need a t-20 driver, and not a t20 bit on an extension) It was barely possible to replace the switch going in through the instrument panel location. New switch had 2 grounds, old switch and harness had one. Had to fabricate wiring, you will need 2 spade female terminals and wire. Doable, but major P.I.A.
Hopefully yours goes easier, like the one in this video. Good Luck...

After replacing my third headlight switch, I ended up getting a headlight relay kit from Daniel Stern. You supply your own wire & loom. Takes the burden off the switch on aging headlight circuits

Hi there this video was extremely useful for this task today and I just have one question. After replacing this part with a new one and the high beams are still not working do you think its electrical or bad fuses?

On mine, the connection on the Jeep side is melted. Replace & solder? Or is there a different fix?
    Thanks.

If the light knob is stuck, and will only pull out half way - or not at all, do you need to replace the switch? The knob / rod? Everything?

Its not. The video is kind of mislabeled. Its after the 97 redesign with the new interior. Im still working on chipping away parts of the dash to get my switch out. Its quickly becoming one of the my top 3 WORST things do replace on any car. Its way worse than a 60 Continental starter motor.

Overall good video, however you removed the center entertainment cover and the dashboard cover without showing us how. You do show how to put them back after the work is finished, but to be complete from start to finish, I'd suggest you show all the stages or provide links other videos if you don't want to record this step for multiple repair videos.

How is that relevant? At the very least she's done this before & that's what is important. I'm also a "she" & I'll be doing this repair in about an hour or so - following this video.

@@ncognitod.460 No, the HeMan here hasn't done this too often before...
I have been a mechanic for 40 years,...and you DO NOT have to disassemble 2/3s of the dash panels to replace that dern switch...
The outer "cap" on the end of the dash is removed by two screws, and the rest just pries out the slightest...
This switch takes all of 12 minutes to change...Period.
But Hey, everyone has to learn somewhere.
