    Of 9 vehicles I've owned 4 were Jeeps and two of those are XJs. A beater 89 Laredo which refused to die no matter how mercilessly I beat it and my current daily driver. A beautiful, bone stock, fully loaded 2000 Limited that has 177k miles on it. They aren't without their problems like any other 20+ year old vehicle but everything listed in this video is a one banana job most people can do in their driveway. There's a reason close to 3 million were produced during its 17 year production run, with just one redesign, from 84 to 01 and have maintained their appeal ever since. Jeep followed a solid formula which they executed extremely well with these. They're simple, rugged, reliable, well styled and as competent off road as they are on pavement. Most people who have owned or still drive one will tell you even if you don't ask. Not many cars designed in the early 80's are as desirable and still cruising the streets in such high numbers over 35 years after their debut, many with upwards of 250,000 miles and counting. The sheer size of the aftermarket is a testament to the platform itself, companies make virtually anything someone could need to build a nice rig. You can take on the toughest trails there are, door to door with $60,000 purpose built vehicles in a 25 year old XJ you initially paid less than a grand for. I live in New York where the climate is not easy on the equipment most stuff barely lasts ten years but I still see them daily even if they are rotted, and I hope that continues. As long as I can find relatively clean examples and parts to keep them alive, I'll keep driving and messing with them.

    Love the video..but I have a few things to add..first the wires in the door especially the driver's side door were it hinges, second the head liner comes detached, third the exhaust gasket were it collects at the pipe, fourth the leaf springs loose get weak, fifths the rockers and floor pans rust too fast..but even with all the flaws..I still love them and i will keep buying the xj's!!

    The sensor switch in the transmission that turns on the reverse lights can be cleaned and rejuvenated. Also, it’s a good idea to switch reverse lights from incandescent to LED, as they put less load on the switch.

    Owning an XJ for the last 8 years I had to deal with overheating problems, CPS, fuel pump and yes that exhaust manifold did get replaced, they all crack. I learned to use Mopar only with the CPS since one I did order once installed I found the plug didn’t match. I also had to change out a fuel pump I installed since the fuel sender wasn’t working and no gas gauge. Both the parts I first ordered for the CPS and the fuel pump came from one place- A1 Auto.

    I can tell you by experience when I bought my Jeep Cherokee it came bone stock with a lot of fixing to do over the 3 years I owned it and sold it for $3000 including wrangler off road tires, new radiator, replaced valve cover gasket, harmonic balancer, replaced water pump, thermostat, 3 distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, wire set, brakes, rotors, catalytic converter, new backlight, and side steps were added it was a tough demanding engine no doubt but I couldn’t go over 65mph on the freeway or it would rattle a lot maybe cause of the lift. I even pulled a GMC Sierra from the mud with this bad boy and beat it on a race. All of these small fixes but I still miss it the day it left.

    I find it hilarious you waited until 2021 to do a top 5 problems on a vehicle that hasn't been manufactured in the U.S. for twenty years. Clearly the top 5 issues have been clearly documented & are not that big of a deal as my son & I have two, and I still see a ton of these bulletproof Jeeps out there.

    The common problem I found with five (yep, 5!) 98-01 XJ's? OIL PPRESSURE. I lost an engine on a 99. Low oil pressure, but I figured 10psi would be good enough with heavy oil and thick additives. Well, when the engine was torn down, I found the problem. Worn cam bearings. I rebuilt engine, OilPressure fine...30 at start up idle, 0ver 50 running down the road, and 25 at hot idle. Jeep # 4 had the same problem. I didn't wait for the engine to die, I tore that one down...same problem. The only short term fix is a Melling high flow oil pump. Aside from that, this engine still rates in my book as almost indestructable

    i will say the coil rail (coil wires if you wish to call it that) failed on mine. giving me a cyl 1 misfire. went with a aftermarket rail that came with 12 month or 12k mile warranty on it. also had a speaker wire break in the driver front door which i just ran my own wire to the radio. valve cover and oil pan are leaking but its such a slow leak that by the time oil change is due it hasnt leaked enough to cause a problem. but every xj leaks oil and if you can remember to check the oil level. you should have no problems over all. i can say the one thing i dont understand is where they placed the starter and oil filter. i feel like they could have moved the filter back more or forward to fully miss the starter. so something to keep in mind if you do the oil change yourself.

    Another common issue is vapor lock at the injector line. Just put some heat shielding underneath and good to go 👍

    • @williamgregory3558
      @williamgregory3558 2 роки тому

      Vapor lock…, you just like to say the words vapor lock. Vapor lock. I’ve been s mechanic for 27 years never solved or even seen a diagnosed problem with the vapor lock never even seen it happen. yeah maybe prior to 1965. just words people like to use come on

    • @justonemori
      @justonemori 2 роки тому +1

      @@williamgregory3558 Vapor lock happens on carbs all the time, it's rare but can happen on fuel injection. The aggregating factor here is the I6 has a non cross-flow head. Basically the intake and exhaust manifolds are intertwined. The fuel heats until it becomes vapor. Non-crossflow was outdated in the 60s when Jeep brought the I6 to the world, haha.

    Range switch does not have to be replaced you take it off you service it by cleaning the insides of it and you put it back on and usually it works fine it’s a mechanical switch not always does it need replacement you just said it’s an absolute always needs to be replaced it doesn’t.
