    HELLO FRIENDS!! this week we ventured to an amazon liquidation store to get ourselves some treasures 💸and also figure out what it was all about, lol. what did you guys think of our haul?? 🧐 PS -- quick note -- the in-store shopping segments were filmed in late July/early August, when the mask mandate in NC was lifted -- which is why you see a mix of mask & no-mask! hope you guys have a great weekend

    You know you've made it as a UA-camr, when instead of getting kicked out of a place for filming, you're invited to the back of the store to film some more.

      I guess it's because she is generally a very respectful, calm, mature UA-camr. None of the crazy stuff, no disrespecting staff, no pranks. I would feel safe inviting Safiya to film the back of my business too.

      I almost imagine with how much they purchase weekly that the staff doesn’t pull a few things for themselves as a bonus - but so much good awesome stuff comes through that eventually it probably looses its appeal and you only grab what you really want/need after awhile and the novelty wears off lol

      @@crazylatingirl94 a friend of mine worked at Amazon and he told me that the staff are the ones who actually take the goods out of the boxes, because they only had a computer system that checked the labels on the boxes of retuned goods or undelivered packages, so they only had to make sure to scan the box when they’ve returned it to the warehouse and it was all good. He told me that literally everyone was stealing and doing these tricks, some people even got 60” TV’s, PlayStation’s, phones, laptops etc. If someone thinks that these liquidation companies are getting the real good stuff they’re dreaming because they won’t even make it all the way there in the first place 😂.

    This is cool, but there’s a part of me that’s just really uncomfortable. Like we just throw so much away, it’s insane. It’s better that it goes here where someone might find and use this stuff, but the fact that all this stuff exists at all is insane. Whether it’s food or items or clothes, we waste so much that could mean everything to someone else, and keep producing at breakneck speeds in sweatshops just for most stuff to end up in the trash.

    • @dreamer0georgi
      @dreamer0georgi 3 роки тому +335

      I would even argue that people paying pennies for items worth hundreds make them even more prone to throwing them in the trash if they don't like what they get and can't sell it further. It seems like a never ending cycle of waste no matter how you put it :(.

    • @liliancaran5364
      @liliancaran5364 3 роки тому +137

      Returning is not throwing away, and people rarely return things for fun or to waste something. Where ANY product exists, there will be "all this stuff." Waste exists all over the world, even more so in poor countries. At least here we are starting to find ways to reduce and manage waste, including the kind of waste that damages the ocean and other ecosystems. This way people can potentially get items that they otherwise may never be able to afford and could mean a lot to them, and also it's unethical to officially donate items that may not function or be unhygienic, just like it's unethical to donate food that may make someone sick or donate clothes that are dirty and have holes in them

    • @dodgethis_
      @dodgethis_ 3 роки тому +180

      I think one of the reasons why people are so wasteful there is that they can return stuff like that (clearly used, broken, for no reason other than "I don't like it"). The fact that you can return a half-finished piece of cosmetics in the States is mind-blowing to me.

    • @glittery_cucumber

      I'm also sick of online shopping as a whole and videos about it in particular, although this one at least puts a spin on it where the items get repurposed. But shipping alone takes such an unneccesary toll on the environment... Not to mention the work conditions most of these items are produced in. The whole topic is a downer for sure.

    I just realized how much trash we generate while watching this. It blows my mind how many of these online products we buy and discard ends up being a trash that needs to be disposed. In a way it’s good that these places exist because otherwise this stuff would all end up in landfill. However, I think we’ve really got to change the way we view purchasing. If we put thought and time into purchase decisions we wouldn’t be returning as much as we are. Obviously sometimes we will be unhappy with a purchase due to sizing etc, but we still can sell it on ourselves or give it away to someone rather than returning it to a company who (without places like this) will put it straight into landfill. Not to mention the extra CO2 emissions from you returning your random plastic kitchen gadget. Respect your money, respect workers, respect the environment.

    • @JarvisChrist
      @JarvisChrist 3 роки тому +49

      Yeah seeing people buying hauls of stuff from Amazon with the assumption that you will return a lot of it is not sustainable. You never know if it's going to be resold or just go in the trash.

    • @TheSongwritingCat
      @TheSongwritingCat 3 роки тому +19

      I think it's complicated because if, for example, you buy a blender that doesn't work, you can't give it away or resell it. You can take the loss but you will still throw it away. As for items that can be resold (mostly clothes), there needs to be more pressure on companies to actually resell those items instead of calculating that the costs of reverse logistics are too high. Similarly, if rules were altered, companies would have more incentive to manufacture higher quality gadgets that would be less likely to be returned. This would drive up costs for products but it would ultimately be better for consumers to have confidence in the products they were buying.

    • @AmandaTitus85
      @AmandaTitus85 3 роки тому +25

      A large part of the responsibility should lie on the massive companies. Amazon does not give a single care about the environment. Consumers can only do so much but these multimillion dollar companies can do so much more

    • @lswt6026
      @lswt6026 3 роки тому +6

      @@AmandaTitus85 I agree, but I also think we can do a lot. For example, we can buy from companies that care about the environment/their products. There are companies that take back their packaging and recycle it into more packaging for their products. There are also companies that take back their products and repair them or recycle them into more products they sell. It’s even better to buy secondhand- or better yet- buy less things.

      Some times though it's because they send the wrong product... It happened 3 times during the Amazon Prime days this year. I mean I could have bought the items again and sold / gifted the wrong ones ... but it didn't make sense to pay twice for an item I wanted...

  • @Gelbraddy
    @Gelbraddy 3 роки тому +420

    I'm really glad all these things do end up getting bought, and the treasure-hunting aspect of it will likely make people Treasure the items they did find so they don't end up in a landfill later anyway, but- the fact that one company's waste can fuel an entire, separate economy is. kind of unsettling if you step back a little.

    Coming from a small business owner who sells on Amazon: if a package is opened and used Amazon will (hopefully catch it and not send it out as new) then ask the business if they want to pay for shipping to ship it back to the business or pay (less money) for Amazon to "dispose" of it for them. I'm guessing that's where these items all come from. Also little known fact, people think Amazon loses money from returns but make so much it doesn't matter. Amazon only loses money on their own brand products. For any third party seller, the third party pays for that free shipping and free returns, plus pay amazon processing fees. So they don't lose money and in fact make a little from liquidation sales

      @@banshee1133 not if it has been clearly opened and used. We don't have any way to talk to the Amazon workers so we can't tell them how to check or what to look for, so some shady people will take advantage on this and return only half things (like taking tips and filters from the microdermabration tool) and get a full refund. We can send it back to ourselves and see if it has been used or if it can be repackaged. We donate anything we can't sell but it is the most expensive route to ship it back to ourselves. If items are reported as broken or if the item is inexpensive to begin with, I imagine a lot of companies going with the Amazon disposal route because it's more cost effective.

    Coming from a licensed esthetician here in NC, that microderm machine looks pretty good! Here
    are few tips if you continue to use it:
    1. Keep the skin taut when running the tip across your skin.
    2. Never leave the machine in one spot, it should always be moving, you might get hickies bahahah
    3. How you were doing the nose was perfect!
    4. Try not to do this more than once a week as it could be too much exfoliation on your skin.
    5. Make sure to use a moisturizer/serum after as you’ve got some fresh skin that needs hydrating!

These centers exist, and also Kohl's stores handle Amazon returns. I don't know if all of them do, or only a few kohl's. But at the one i worked at last year we had at LEAST 20 returns per day, if not more. It might seem convenient, but adding in the disappointment of getting a damaged or inadequate item, having to pack it, take it somewhere, and then still end up needing to actually find a good version of what your looking for and get that instead -it adds up. I really believe that 95%+ of the time people are better off just shopping in person

How about things that burn easily for fire starters and perhaps dip them in wax to make them burn more quickly? Grind up sage to make cleaning sticks - see if they burn OK for house cleansings. Use more scented herbs to make popouri sachets, add to dishes to scent a room, or better yet, add to a small tie bag to either hang in the shower or add to the tub to soak in an herb 'tea'. And some of these herb 'joints' may work well in a sauna to make it smell nice when you are steaming. A great compact way to carry your herbs with you for meditational healing. So there you go. The waste is a problem, but why bring capitalism into this? Capitalism is an economic style for how things are sold, excessive consumerism is a cultural thing and has to do with the buyers, not the sellers? Or a behavior developed through growing up very spoiled. As for the large amounts of excess products, this once again has to do with the buyers? They keep returning perfectly intact products instead of using them. Or at least this is my understanding, ofc correct me if I’m wrong on smth, but I always remember capitalism being taught as an economic system

    • @Sackofpotates

I'm not even exaggerating that's exactly how it's written in economy text books. But if you have even juuust a smidge of life experience you KNOW that profit comes at the cost of people that actually did the labor and the environment. Paul Reveres ride: Listen, my children, and you shall hear
      Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
      On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-Five:
      Hardly a man is now alive
      Who remembers that famous day and year.
      He said to his friend, “If the British march
      By land or sea from the town to-night,
      Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry-arch
      Of the North-Church-tower, as a signal-light,-
      One if by land, and two if by sea;
      And I on the opposite shore will be,
      Ready to ride and spread the alarm
      Through every Middlesex village and farm,

      I have decided to do a "Amazon Free Holiday" where I don't buy anything from them bc of how they treat their employees.

      I haven’t purchased anything from Amazon in 3 years. Unfortunately they own so much other stuff that I can’t get away from them (AWS is the obvious one but also Whole Foods, Twitch, IMBd, and soon the freaking lion movie studio). Shocking how much of a stranglehold they have on the world.

    Tyler saying he ate the chocolate made me laugh so much. The delivery guy must have been thrilled someone was eating them.

    I volunteer at a charity shop and the behind the scenes part definitely reminds me about sorting donations. Especially the part where we have no idea what something is.

    Liquidation outlets have been around for years. My mom was selling returned items at flea markets in the late 90's, the main supplier then being Walmart stores.

    There are thousands and thousands of youtubers these days but Safiya is still one of a kind because she is so well articulate, funny in a very healthy way and overall polite. She doesn't add the word "like" in the middle of every sentence or swears in order to look cool. She is a diamond amongst the rubies.
