Tina Yong had reviewed another gadget like this called the "Goplay Lipskit" which was much cheaper than the YSL one and had more shade options! Maybe you should also try using that! And compare between it and YSL
also wanted to bring that up! it seems great and theres a lot of room to play with colors compared to the very limited colors you get with this ysl one you do have to pump the colors yourself but at least the app tells you how much you need
Another flaw I haven't seen mentioned is that you can't buy a cartridge seperately, you have to get the set. So if you consistently run out of one colour, you have to get the two others that come with the set as well. It's a cool piece of technology but there seems to be a whole list of flaws that need to get adressed before the next version comes out.
You are spot on when you said they should have made CMYK cartridges. Then the color options would have been endless. The reason why they made the cartridges red, pink, etc. families is so they could sell more of them. A cool product idea that YSL ruined by putting profit over the innovative potential for beauty technology
I agree, then it would be extremely useful. The way it is now only gives you pretty normal colours that you could probably find and buy easily everywhere. It would be much better if you could make something like lime green for example.
I definitely thought it would be a "find a shade, insert these cartridges" situation. Also a black and white cartridge would make this so much more versitile!
Yes just having warm tones and red shades is kinda a lame design limitation. Color mixing is complicated but it should allow you to mic sets. I get they probably want to avoid really useless colors but really one can just buy a lip pallet and mix way more colors.
As someone who uses one shade and one shade only of lipstick, I have no use for this but it was FASCINATING! (And the first I’ve heard of it, if that makes you feel better about getting it late haha)
I feel like 5 tubes (CMYK+White) would REALLY help this machine reach it’s full spectral potential. Or at least the ability to mix and match the tubes to get broader color options
Honestly, it feels like this product should be better. Maybe it has something to do with the formula or wanting to only make "wearable" or "flattering" shades. I'm waiting for a more interesting knockoff/competitor.
Almost every feature of this machine seems to have a glaring flaw. They must have spent their R&D budget on lunch. The cartridge sets are all similar colors, so most of the shades they are going to be able to make with 3 very similar colors are probably indistinguishable from each other. The software not being smart enough to tell you what cartridges to use and instead of you having to specifically limit its options is the exact opposite of how it should work. If it printed in CMYK, its existence would make sense but if you're just mixing similar colors to get another shade in the same family, why can't you just do that yourself? It's not exactly complicated. And it seems pretty inaccurate itself.
What would be even cooler is if you could just like open and insert any ysl liquid lipstick/lip gloss and the app told you which you needed to make the exact color you're scanning or you could tell it which colors you already own and it could give you options to get as close as you can to the shade you want. I have to say I agree the way they did it is ass backwards and your idea would be the most versatile. CMYK with black and white would be the best to get the most wide range of shades. Like that palet she used to make the original Brucie shade back in the day.
Another UA-camr, Tina Yong, tried a $70 version called Go Play Cosmetics Lipskit 2.0 which did have black, white, and the primary colors! Here's the link in case you wanted to watch it ua-cam.com/video/FyZ1PWOc8i8/v-deo.html. I just watched it the other day so I'm excited to see Saf's YSL version in comparison now.
I feel like I'm the only one who thinks it almost never matched the shade she chose. It was always slightly too much of one think that didn't match and like she pointed out the actual lipstick was more accurate than what the app showed, so it's very misleading. For that price it's really not worth it.
@@blueismylove3128 I definitely thought the product was dissapointing. It’s a super fun concept, and had it been more sophisticated and customizable for that price, maybe it would have been be worth it.
I appreciate that saf tells us the shortcomings of the machine. It seems like a really cool novelty item right now but I love to think of what they could do with it in the future
As a makeup artist I can see how freaking useful this would be. Also sometimes I literally can’t figure out what lipstick would look best, or I don’t have one to go with my eyeshadow. I really love this idea
i feel like this has so much potential for the beauty industry. as a makeup artist myself i think all of us would enjoy having the perfect lipstick for each and every client. plus it looks so fun!! i really hope this gets more development. they could make more variants, like matte and suede finishes maybe and like what you said a crazy color cartridges like blues greens purples.
I love how supportive Tyler is in every video. I’m sure behind the scenes this takes forever and it’s nice that u can never hear any type of annoyance in his voice
But really the only colors you can make are red, pink, and orange. It's not like you can really choose anything that you wouldn't be able to get for cheap in a sample size.
The pure joy after every "shade found" just shows how frustrating those previous 6 hours must have been :D thank you so much for the effort you put into your videos!
Omg this would make matching lipsticks so much less stressful. The fact that they didn’t have the cartridges built in leads me to believe they will be adding more in the future, possibly more fluorescent, untraditional colors
I feel like they didn’t spend enough time developing this… kind of smart because everyone will buy it to try it out and then when they release more ‘revolutionary’ additions people will be excited and buy it again
Honestly, it doesn’t matter to me that other people already reviewed it, you are always so through and fun while doing it! We get quality review and laughs, a total win-win!❤️
This has so much potential. You are 100% correct about it needing to be like a traditional printer. White, black, yellow, cyan, magenta. Make any color under the sun. That doesn't seem to fit YSLs clientele but it could definitely get them more customers.
I saw Robert Welsh review this, and he had a good point that there needs to be a white and a black, otherwise you can't get lighter and darker colors, just more red or pink or orange. A super cool concept, but definitely agree it should have 5 of 6 cartridges at a time! Only the top part needs to be transportable. Very fun to see you try it out and see your creativity! 😊 I feel like your natural dark pink lip color was showing through, making every color show up more pink than the digital example. Maybe worth a retry with concealer or foundation-covered lips??
Honestly 3 slots is probably fine. BUT it needs to tell you which 3 it needs not having 3 that go together and never with something else. Also they could add the ability to do multiple goes to get the same color.
white, sure, but you can't only use black to darken things. it will also desaturate it. white also desaturates. They just need to get the standard printer colours like Safiya mentioned. Or at the very least the primary colours a black and a white. Until then, this is just a silly gimmick.
I feel like this could have a lot of potential in the future, but for now the shades that it makes are a little bit disappointing. If stuff like custom foundation shades/eyeshadow shades/skincare comes out, you got to do a full routine with 'customized' products!
the technology feels a bit too limited currently to be anything more than a novelty, but I'm excited to see if beauty companies grow and expand on this concept in the future!
she should get the Go play lip kit, they have primary colours, white and black so u can even make dark green lipstick if u want and they're much cheaper than ysl!
The idea behind the device is amazing! Now if only there were more colors to mix. Who knows maybe in the future we’ll start to see more updated versions of this
This seems super good for cosplay too. Especially the shade matcher tool. Imagine this for all kinds of makeup (Might need a couple years for some upgrades though. Maybe more cartridges to make more accurate shades because the machine just squirts out the base color. Plus, maybe more sets then just basic lip color shades)
@@haleymaebelle2391Lipskit by Goplay, I think is the product they are referring to. It's also like a third of the price of this product. I looked it up and it's $69.00, I believe it also allows you to adjust the finish of the lipstick and if it's glittery or not. I wish you well in your lipstick making ventures, friends :)
I love how she really reviews the product throughly. Like it's not just an "Oh I like it" or an "Oh I hate it" she really tries to give it its best shot and then make a decision from there and it feels so authentic. So thank you for this! It was so much fun to watch!
The amount of shades it _couldn't_ create honestly is no surprise at all with such curated base colors. I was on the same train of thought of having more a primary color cartridge set - or at least even a blue- _ish_ color in at least _a_ set. I've never dropped more than $10 on lipstick lmao but if I were a big spender on makeup I'd still think it's a total waste of money :/ better to just buy individual orangey, pinky, or reddish shades. This needs to be redone 👏 _RIGHT_ 👏
This machine is so interesting! The concept has a lot of possibilities but you’re right, they need way more shades (and a way to cross-mix shade groups).
Overall, I think it's a positive step into the direction of what the future of makeup can be. Customisable and also in the long haul can save on costs from having each individual colour. Also saves space and reduced clutter.
This has so much potential but still quite a long way to go, definitely wasn’t expecting that it would only function with three cartridges at a time! I’m pretty sure that a simple tweak to the app’s code would at least enable computing and inserting whichever colour is needed for any colour combination without limiting it by palette
Thanks for watching ❤️I’m glad you enjoyed this video 😊 Don’t forget to hit the like button 👍 Text me a message on digit above👆you got yourself a giftpack
Idea: create a lipstick with this (of anything really) and then take a photo of the lipstick you just made. Then create a colour with that photo of the lipstick. Keep repeating until it is a completely different shade.
the fact that they didn't have bases for "weirder" colors seems like such a missed opportunity. That being said, I would totally want to try it and see if I can make LaoGanMa Red haha.
Not even just weirder colors, what was too light or dark for the machine was very limiting. It doesn't have much range at all and the shades you can "make" aren't very good matches, despite what Saf seemed to think.
check out Go Play Cosmetics Lipskit 2.0! its pretty affordable n imo is better. They have blue/yellow/white/black so u have ur color options + have the option to stay matte or go glossy~ And also its soooo much cheaper ($70)
I was thinking the same thing. I'm not sure how much they'll put into developing it much further but I think they could benefit from that, or being able to mix the cartridges from different sets?
I'm sure this is just what they are starting off with. They aren't going to dive in all the way, and dedicate more money to it until they know if it's something that will sell. If it sells well and there is a large demand for color shade expansion, then they will create it.
It's gonna be interesting to see how these kinds of machines evolve over time - as of now it seems like it's more prototype than actualized but it was still really delightful to see you and Tyler experiment with its possibilities in the wild! Hopefully one day they can get more blues and greens in the mix - would love to see how the app would color match the tones of waters and gemstones and such in that color family.
A version of this with an ability to make unusual colors like green, black and blue would be really cool. They could definitely improve on the color selection, but it's still a really fun contraption.
This should work somewhat the other way around: you bring the shade, it tells you to put the needed colors in, and I think it would provide much more accurate matches that way! But its already good compared to the regular option.
I feel like this would be so much fun if they had RGB cartridge sets to get a super wide range. It would also make it feel more artistic with mixing super different colors.
Probably not RGB, when using physical pigments, there's no way to get yellow or orange with RGB, but RYB or CMYK definitely would've been better. At the very least including some black and white with this
Yes I’m late to the party, but I feel like it should tell you what cartridges to add to make the desired color rather than try to make it within just 3 specific ones. It would give a lot more range to the product if there were something like 12-21 cartridges that could all be interchangeable with each other and it would tell you “Match Found: Add cartridges 2, 9 & 17 to make the desired color” and then tell you which goes into each spot like the order it tells you means put cartridge 2 in the #1 spot, 9 in the #2 spot and 17 in the #3 spot so that it could pump out the right amount. I’m just saying, “L’Oréal You Hiring?!”
I really hope this whole "lipstick printer" idea evolves over time so we can do things like dusty shades or mix cartridges! It'd be so cool! (And also I'd love if they made something like this for paint!!! You take a picture of a color and it'll squirt out paint!)
They do have a few apps that can do that, but you then have to take it to a paint store or hardware store to have them mix it, which does make it a lot more inconvenient.
@@bananabot151 I don't have a lowes in my area unfortunately 😅 so a small device like this with cartridges (maybe 5 holes, the three primary colors, black and White) would be great espically for painting on the go it'd be a lot better than a can
I love that you're always willing to offer constructive criticism of these fun gadgets instead of just gushing over how cool they are! It feels so much more genuine :)
There is a youtuber called Robert Welsh who has not long done a video with an alternative version of this machine that has 5 cartridges of blue, pink, yellow, white and blue that you might like! I think he said its around £60?
Ok, I'll have to admit, the concept of this product was actually pretty good: not too much waste of lipstick and a pretty decent amount of colours to make without the need to buy a single-colour lipstick every time you want to change I really liked it
This looks so fun and PRACTICAL! I’m partially colourblind so I have trouble picking shades that work with my skin tone and outfits. The idea of a machine creating the perfect lipstick is so cool 😍
I discovered your site at 1am this morning when up with my COVID-affected son. 14 hours later, I'm still watching and have now subscribed. Keep up the great work!
This is a cool concept, but the machine should definitely have just the primary colors so they can make whatever color and then black and white so they can make the lipstick lighter or darker
i'd love to see them expand this into more "unusual" colors or find a way to mix and match the color sets so it can come up with more variety. Like to make a dusty color you'd probably need to be able to mix a nude with a color from a different set or introduce some sort of grey or blue. Either way, this machine is pretty cool, I wonder if they could do this with liquid eyeliner next
hi saf! i wanted to tell you that there's another lip stick printer made by the brand "GoPlay" and it has way more color variations. i don't know the exact price, but i do know it's available right now!
I don't really watch anyone in the "Beauty" community anymore, but I always enjoy your videos Safiya. Your love of lipstick helped me see that I didn't need to stress about full complicated faces of makeup and could just enjoy putting on a fun lip color.
Sounds like a really good idea, but I agree it needs more colors to balance the reds, pinks and nudes. A dot of white or a dot of blue or yellow can really change the fishish product.
Wow, brick really suits her. Seeing the "nude" colours on their own, I always have a hard time imagine them looking good on (especially light coloured) faces, but damn, it fit.
Hey! As a product designer, I'd like to point out that you shouldn't feel stupid if you're unable to understand how an app works!😄 The app was at fault since it could have just shown the suggested colour with the set change prompt:) it's a user pain point imo! Apart from that, this product sounds fun and I feel like playing with lipsticks now 😂😂
@@insertname9581 As a user experience designer, I would like to paraphrase Don Norman’s vision (look him up): “The problem never is the user, it’s bad design”. So no, users shouldn’t have to figure out the designer’s thought process. Designers should guide users.
The GoPlay Lipskit is exactly what Safiya described! It has the primary colors and black and white and you mix them as you want, so you can make virtually any color. Its cheaper too. It has an app to help you with the formula but you can play around and make anything. Its really a revolutionary idea for lipstick
MINK make-up printer!!! It converts any picture you uploaded and essentially prints out a sheet of the picture with the colored areas as make up that you can use. Super cool. Blew my mind when I saw it. And the coloration is spot on.
I wish they would've implemented a cymk combination as well. It would've given us more fun color options, but pinks and oranges are safe. Enjoyed your video!
While there are obvious areas for improvement, I think this is a good starting point for a gadget like this. Thank you Safiya for such an in-depth review.
I actually love when Safiya reviews something that's been reviewed a few times already. She always pushes things to their limits, shows the kinds of mistakes that get edited out of more promotion-y videos-- the kinds of mistakes normal human beings make, especially when the product instructions aren't entirely clear-- and is honest about disappointments, small details, and real-world wearability. All while being funny and charming and thorough with her research and just utterly lovely.
I also thought it would be more "pick a color, get told the cartridges to make it" than it was, and I agree that it needs the addition of white/black carts to be able to make more tints and shades than just the base colors. But hopefully they'll come out with more color sets, and update the software so that you can mix-and-match color sets. This really does feel like the future of makeup technology, and I'm all here for it!~
Hey Saf. Artist here. If this helps, they're going for a standard color wheel format there. With 3 colors, the base shades are going to be placed in the circle in the extreme outer edge and equally apart from each other (imagine a symmetrical Y) So if you go too close to those areas on the wheel, you're going to get a base color very time.
totally get it - the initial orange one is probably my fault, but often even the “shade matches” (that i didn’t choose) ended up coming out a single color!
Hopefully they will add more color combinations and the price will come down on this so it will be more readily available to more consumers. Thanks for reviewing this, love watching your videos!
You should check out the pump one Tina Yong recently tried! It uses primary colors so you can mix any shade! It’s not electronic but does have an app and would be fun to try to make color matches, especially if you could dupe some limited edition ones aye Edit: the device is made by Go Play Cosmetics
I feel like this product would be much improved by having a full suite of colors available for printing inside rather than just the shade sets of three. Either way, what a cool idea!
Especially for cosplayers and costumers! I was trying to find a blue lip and it took me forever I would’ve loved to been able to mix up different options!
If they can streamline this technology, I feel like it’d be so good for make up artists! And just in general eliminates the wasteful buying of a whole lipstick to find out you don’t like the shade/don’t want to wear it a lot.
When you find you do want to wear something a lot, it'd be a nice to have the app be able to connect to the internet to order you a regular lipstick of the exact color.
Upon further consideration, it'd be nice to not only be able to order it but to have a URL you could share with friends so they can order it too. If they're smart they'll give the creator a small percentage of the profit as incentive to share it. Maybe as a coupon.
All the review reels that I've watched never mentioned the shortcomings once or like how the machine actually works, but Safiya made it more clear and showed us how it actually works..appreciate it so much❣
Omg wish you could try swatching the colours on the object they're supposed to match. Maybe that can be a shorts series?? Like that guy that shade matches random stuff
Though it's probably too similar, I wish you could try the goplaycosmetics lips kit that lets you custom mix your liquid lipstick color too 😍 I saw Tina Yong tried it recently, and immediately thought of you 😆
I realize this is gross but I would absolutely make a shade based on the color of my areola, just to see if that’s ACTUALLY the best nude lipstick color 😂
I don't think I'd do that, though tbh I don't understand the appeal of "nude" lipsticks - I don't wear lipstick often but if I did I think I'd go for deep reds, pale/pastel pinks, the whole range of purples, and occasionally a glossy or glittery black. Nude lipstick seems like... if you're gonna wear lipstick, why not something funky and obviously not natural?
The matching to outfits is probably the best part of this device since that’s something I struggle with but definitely needs more color variety for fun colors! 🌈
They should definitely look into using the CMYK colors like a printer (with some white for pastels). Just imagine the lipsticks you’d be able to get from that!
The amount of potential this lipstick printer has! It has a couple short comings but I can see how much it could improve in the future. Everything needs a beginner prototype :) . Excited to see more videos!

But really the only colors you can make are red, pink, and orange. It's not like you can really choose anything that you wouldn't be able to get for cheap in a sample size.

The shade matching is a bit limited, but it really seems like an interesting first step. I could see this really expanding into something interesting!
i hope they keep iterating!!! i need a blue cartridge for sure 🙏🏼

@@safiya sure 100 people have already said this but have you seen the one Tina Yong tried with all the colours? Inc. black blue and white
Honestly, it doesn’t matter to me that other people already reviewed it, you are always so through and fun while doing it! We get quality review and laughs, a total win-win!❤️
I honestly can never get tired of this series. It’s been going on a few years, but it still feels so fresh?
Who knows maybe in the future we’ll start to see more updated versions of this
And Safiya can do another haul review of that!
Omg as a makeup artist this lipstick printer would re revolutionary not only with the color variety but also for sanitization! 😱
This seems super good for cosplay too. Especially the shade matcher tool. Imagine this for all kinds of makeup
(Might need a couple years for some upgrades though. Maybe more cartridges to make more accurate shades because the machine just squirts out the base color. Plus, maybe more sets then just basic lip color shades)
A lipstick palette does the same thing
@@premingergang1099 I mean that does rely on the color-mixing ability of the user, though, which for a lot of people can be daunting

Thanks for watching ❤️I’m glad you enjoyed this video 😊

Idea: create a lipstick with this (of anything really) and then take a photo of the lipstick you just made. Then create a colour with that photo of the lipstick. Keep repeating until it is a completely different shade.

loll that's like when you take a screenshot of a screenshot over and over until the image deep-fries itself
Generation loss but for lipsticks
the fact that they didn't have bases for "weirder" colors seems like such a missed opportunity.
@@KieraRamonaa Was looking for this comment!!! Saf should go try it, too. She can go ham with the colors there!
There is another one called GoPlay Lipskit 2.0!!
A version of this with an ability to make unusual colors like green, black and blue would be really cool. They could definitely improve on the color selection, but it's still a really fun contraption.
Like I feel like if this was improved on it could actually be really useful.
When a brand actually makes what we want, a.k.a. a lipstick maker with blue/yellow/red/black/white ink, I am so there.
*CMYK+white
LipsKit by Goplay cosmetics
There is one, but you have to do it by hand. That combined with this would be great
This should work somewhat the other way around: you bring the shade, it tells you to put the needed colors in, and I think it would provide much more accurate matches that way!
At the very least including some black and white with this
The amount of excitement Saf exudes every time a shade match is found brings me so much joy.
Lol just ignoring Lowes paint scanner

Ok, I'll have to admit, the concept of this product was actually pretty good: not too much waste of lipstick and a pretty decent amount of colours to make without the need to buy a single-colour lipstick every time you want to change
I really liked it
This looks so fun and PRACTICAL!
This is interesting. I’d prefer a bit more range of colors, especially darker shades, but I love the concept.
Seems more of a novelty than being able to change colors up. You’ve made some pretty epic shades on your own 😻
I can’t wait to see the improvements they make with this in a few years. I was excepting them to use primary colors with a white shade.

Hey! As a product designer, I'd like to point out that you shouldn't feel stupid if you're unable to understand how an app works!😄 The app was at fault since it could have just shown the suggested colour with the set change prompt:) it's a user pain point imo!

I wish they would've implemented a cymk combination as well. It would've given us more fun color options, but pinks and oranges are safe. Enjoyed your video!
While there are obvious areas for improvement, I think this is a good starting point for a gadget like this. Thank you Safiya for such an in-depth review.
I love how excited you get! It's so refreshing to see such pure joy
Yes, she's the best!

I also thought it would be more "pick a color, get told the cartridges to make it" than it was, and I agree that it needs the addition of white/black carts to be able to make more tints and shades than just the base colors. But hopefully they'll come out with more color sets, and update the software so that you can mix-and-match color sets. This really does feel like the future of makeup technology, and I'm all here for it!~
This is such a cool device, just a bit disappointing with the limited shades. Hopefully it'll update with more unique colours

The brick needed more red/brown. As a painter, I love mixing colors! I love all of this!!!!
Gotta give it to YSL. The packaging is beautiful. Looks so fancy!! Definitely looking forward to a CMYK or one where you can mix and match cartridges.
I agree with most everyone saying black and white cartridges would improve the color range tremendously! Thanks for reviewing this!
Hey Saf. Artist here. If this helps, they're going for a standard color wheel format there. With 3 colors, the base shades are going to be placed in the circle in the extreme outer edge and equally apart from each other (imagine a symmetrical Y)
So if you go too close to those areas on the wheel, you're going to get a base color very time.
totally get it - the initial orange one is probably my fault, but often even the “shade matches” (that i didn’t choose) ended up coming out a single color!
@@safiya It's unfortunate. I agree that having CMYK would be great
Hopefully they will add more color combinations and the price will come down on this so it will be more readily available to more consumers. Thanks for reviewing this, love watching your videos!
You should check out the pump one Tina Yong recently tried! It uses primary colors so you can mix any shade! It’s not electronic but does have an app and would be fun to try to make color matches, especially if you could dupe some limited edition ones aye

Especially for cosplayers and costumers! I was trying to find a blue lip and it took me forever I would’ve loved to been able to mix up different options!
Lipskit has primary colours as well as black and white also they’re more affordable
Yo that's a great idea
Upon further consideration, it'd be nice to not only be able to order it but to have a URL you could share with friends so they can order it too. If they're smart they'll give the creator a small percentage of the profit as incentive to share it. Maybe as a coupon.

Right?! I tend to do holiday color lipsticks when I celebrate and finding a decent green lipstick for St Patrick's day is so hard.
I realize this is gross but I would absolutely make a shade based on the color of my areola, just to see if that’s ACTUALLY the best nude lipstick color 😂
I like the way you think 😂 horrifically creative
