Chris Stuckmann reviews The Call of the Wild, starring Harrison Ford, Dan Stevens, Omar Sy, Karen Gillan, Bradley Whitford, Colin Woodel. Directed by Chris Sanders.
I disliked the movie because I love the book. I understand that the movie was made for children, but it completely takes away the realism and bluntness in the book. For example, the tender feet succumbing to the thawing river, or Buck showing mercy to Spitz. They can’t really show Spitz’s death in a children’s movie, but it changes the story completely, as Buck is supposed to be a domesticated animal who evolves into a dog who shows no mercy. His battle with spitz was supposed to be his first instance of him showing no mercy, and they took it away. It was a good film, but terrible in relation to its source material.
Same . The first 10 minutes I was like “ CGI Dog “ but once you get invested , you don’t even notice it anymore . I get why ppl complained about how Buck shows emotion and it makes not look real but to me I think it helped the movie .
I read the book before seeing this movie and genuinely loved it. This movie is just a straight-up family film and doesn't understand what made the book so powerful in the first place. It's fine though on its own but I do highly recommend reading the book if you guys want something more substantial.
I was worried about the CGI, but once the movie started found myself enthralled by the story. The story stayed true to the Jack London novel and honestly, I loved it.
I also thought the animation (CGI) was a nice touch. It opened the movie to a wider audience and made me feel like a kid. I personally loved the expressive eyes.

Agreed - Togo was one of my favorite movies year and could've easily (should've?) been a cinematic release. Instead of making you cry via cheap manipulation like most dog films, Togo is genuinely moving and delightful by virtue of its story and characters and execution. I like Harrison Ford as much as anyone, but as soon as I saw the trailer for "Call of the Wild, I knew I would be unable to buy into it emotionally. The uncanny valley dog looks phony in every single scene of trailer...if they didn't have the budget to not make him look like a video game graphic, why bother?

How would a dog make the expressions that the cgi dog was making. Shouldn’t he be able to non-verbally communicate without the actors? I don’t think any amount of money given to that dog would allow him to do such things on command.

You were expecting a Call of the Wild review, but it was actually a Togo review! Jokes aside, it just seems super weird for Indiana Jones to talk to a CGI dog for the whole movie...
My friends son lost his dog yesterday from getting killed by car in front of house, all I thought about was losing my dog and I’m still upset. Dogs are amazing animals in every way. Dogs reflect true love and loyalty that no human can ever match. They teach humans how to love unconditionally.. I’m still learning
-2019 Lion King comes out “The animals don’t have enough expression on their faces” -Call of the Wild comes out “The expressions don’t make them seem like real animals”
See, that's the thing. People are rarely pleased with photo-real animals. If you make it perfectly realistic like The Lion King, people think it looks lifeless and expect the animals to emote like a human because they're keeping the 1994 version in mind. As soon as the VFX artists implement that feedback into The Call of the Wild, they say it's off-putting and looks like a cartoon because the dog's expressions are too human-like. Ugh, just shut up, appreciate the beautiful work from the hardworking artists at MPC, and enjoy the movie!
@@martinshewfelt1236 No, it's because The Lion King is a remake of a cartoon, but the CGI animals don't act like cartoon animals, while Call of the Wild is based on a very realistic book, but the CGI dog doesn't act like a real dog. That's the problem, they both got the styles they were supposed to go for the other way around. If they each had the right style, it would have been much better.
The version of “Call Of The Wild” with Rutger Howard is a very good one from what I remember. It’s been a while since I watched it though. I think it came out in the mid 90’s.

That movie needs to get more recognition!!!
@@phillytheflyerable The more I saw of the movie ( in trailers, interviews etc) and realized how much was animated I was just completely turned off to the movie. It looks so obviously fake and dumb. It completely puts me off.
yippykiyay89 Yeah there are a lot of allegations of animal cruelty if you look it up. But even besides that if you rewatch it, the scenes of Milo being thrown off the cliff or bitten by the crabs. Or when the bear is trying to get at them in the scenes towards the end how dangerous and scared the animals must of been. Really sad.
I'm so happy you mentioned Togo. I loved that movie. There is a heart to the story that could've been lost without the relationship between Defoe and Togo.
Well, this version is TRULY A BEAUTIFUL movie and an uplifting must see, especially if people have kids, and want a semi "Happy Ending" for their kids to see. At least, the kids will love it! For me, and IMHO, for anyone whom never seen, nor read "The Call of the Wild"...I recommend my favorite version, the 70's one with "Charlton Heston"😍. Well, the book is definitely too gut-wrenching, and you'll need plenty of tissues, but do read it! In the meantime! Go see this movie, "Unwind, Smile, Cheer and Most of All....Enjoy😊! Just don't forget the tasty buttery🍿😋😆😄!
This was a great, heart warming rendition of Call of The Wild the whole family can enjoy. I read the book a long time ago, so I knew what was left out or toned down, but still liked this movie. The CGI dog threw me off, but eventually I got use to it once I realised this wasn't a word-for-word telling of the tale.
So, the director did Lilo and Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon! Now it kinda makes sense. After seeing it, I said that it felt like a live action cartoon. Everything, from acting to pacing felt like an animated film. It was all a bit exaggerated, but in a charming way. Just like cartoons do things. Even the music sounded like it's from an animated film. I actually didn't mind CGI at all. I minded the lack of structure and pacing which felt uneven. I minded that we never explicitly know what happened to sleigh dogs, Karen Gillan and Colin Woodell. At first, I thought that Dan Stevens was only angry about the dogs leaving them stranded. But then much later the movie shoves an implication they might be dead? That was really poorly addressed. But I really, really loved Harrison Ford in this. He really felt like a rounded character.
Directors these days CGI everything... it's lazy. I am praying that when "the thing" is released (again) they make more effort. Great vid as usual stuck.
Ruthlesss86 I hate the notion that CGI is apparently the "lazy" way out. Because it takes up thousands upon thousands of man hours to create these effects. They take up an insane amount of work. Using CGI is not the lazy approach. In this case it was just the wrong one.
It's not usually a director thing, nor a "laziness" thing. That was CGI in the '90s. Now, it's mainly producers and actors who don't like wearing eye patches*. *Anthony Hopkins in Thor:Ragnarok

Yeah! Right next to Balto's in Central Park. With a plaque that explains how much better Togo is than Balto. lol
GameyScorpio the Togo statue could be Togo lifting his leg to pee on balto
@@blankname6629 😂 I'm all for that!
Nah, I love Balto
Andrewoid agree
Thank you for the shout out to Togo. I absolutely loved watching that movie and was really sad that no one was talking about it. It was so good and I really want more people to see it!
You were expecting a Call of the Wild review, but it was actually a Togo review!
Jokes aside, it just seems super weird for Indiana Jones to talk to a CGI dog for the whole movie...
He is actually talking to a guy in a black suit with a bunch of dots and a camera rig on his face that is trying to act like a dog....
Before I started watching this I thought "man I hope he talks about Togo". Then you did and I had an out of body experience.
Literally same here, as I was clicking the video that's what I thought 😂
Togo is what a good dog movie should be.
Togo was great. I enjoyed watching that with my mom one Sunday afternoon.

Remember that terrible CGI guinea pig movie called G-Force?
And that was what 15 years ago now something like that.
The CGI was good. The especially the side character dogs were on par with lion king.
I mean my cat did that too lol
did the person that ran over ur dog hit and run? because if they did, they deserve no happiness.
One of my favorite things in every Stuckmann video is seeing the different horror shirts he owns that I will develop a wanting of.
One of my favorite dog movies is Homeward Bound. I always compare every animal based movie on that one.
that ending still gets me. They picked the perfect voice actor for Shadow.
I can't watch that movie anymore. All the bad things that happened to those animals, left deep emotional scars for me.
xfreak385231 same. I watched the movie as a kid, but once I learned how many animals were harmed just turned me away from the movie.
@@MrNico494 Can you explain? I don't remember hearing about the animals being harmed.
Just make the whole movie CG so it doesn’t look so distracting.
They just had to make Harrison Ford's face look more like a dog's.
Carol From HR Wdym? That’s Harrison’s real face. He’s getting pretty old now sadly
@@journeythroughtherails5294 I was joking around.
-2019 Lion King comes out
“The animals don’t have enough expression on their faces”
-Call of the Wild comes out
“The expressions don’t make them seem like real animals”
Agreed. That's the best version.
I own it on vhs. When I think of Buck, I think of that movie’s Buck. I believe the dog in the film is a Leonberger.
Rutger Hauer*
OrganismoPerfecto omg! Fucking auto correct has got me again! I even looked up the spelling of his name to make sure I got it right. Thanks for the heads up. 🙂👍
Ratted C+ for *"Can believe it's not doggo."*
That hideous and uncanny CGI pooch, tho... It made Harrison Ford more miserable and wasted, and he was already in character for that!
SO. HAPPY. YOU. BROUGHT. UP. TOGO.
Also, I'm one of the extras in Togo and can confirm that Togo is the goodest boy
So glad you mentioned Togo on Disney+ the movie deserves so much more recognition! Great film!
Well now I gotta go see Togo. I saw Call of The Wild last night and I really enjoyed this movie. It's nice and heartfelt. I guess I just tuned out the CGI. Ford and his story hit me in the feels.
Togo is freaking awesome and heartwarming.
Leury Leonardo way better than call of the wild
My son and I saw it and loved it!
Help! I've been Stuckmanized!!!
You should be grateful
*SUBMIT*
That ice breaking scene in Togo is amazingly made. I was so worried for them that I didn't even pay attention to the CGI in that scene.
I just wanna say ''thank you'' for mentioning Togo... I didn't knew that movie existed and here I am crying 30 minutes after movie ended.
So both Chris Stuckmann and Jeremy Jahns have two dogs that they absolutely adore? I knew there was a reason these two movie reviewers stuck out to me the most.
Holy shit, finally someone else watched Togo!
MundoJuanci it’s really the only thing to watch on Disney+ besides mandalorian
@@blankname6629 amen
Blank Name, clone wars.
I have not seen Milo and Otis in AGES! But it did use to be one of my favorite movies as well as a kid. Now it makes me not want to see it ever again, I pretty much have forgotten what happens in that movie at all . . . But THANK YOU so much for mentioning Togo! That movie needs to get more recognition!!!
Togo is 10/10.
Its good. Knockout performance of Dafoe. His general's speech towards his dog is a thing of legend
Can you teach me how to get stuckmanized
You click right here...
plasmagum ok
Go to film school and become pretentious.
@@EarthsGeomancer Why are you even here
@ To listen to Chris' review. How about you?
"director of lelo and stitch..."
say no more.
*Lilo , say less
And the voice of stitch. Reportedly he will reprise his role in the live action remake of the movie(filming starts this fall in Hawaii)
I heard the dog is 'photo realistic'. Hmm, it isn't, it looks false and the film looks sanitized. I'll stick with the 1972 Charlton Heston version
the cartoon from 1981 crushed me as a kid and is still emotional to watch
Those CGI dogs look stupid and yes “cartoonish”.
looks ridiculous. real dogs worked in white fang
@@phillytheflyerable
The more I saw of the movie ( in trailers, interviews etc) and realized how much was animated I was just completely turned off to the movie.
It looks so obviously fake and dumb. It completely puts me off.
Milo and Otis was one of my favorite movies growing up too. It was great when I was little until looking back at it now as an adult 😬
I remember loving it as a child...but what was bad about how they treated the animals? I can't remember it at all
yippykiyay89 some of the animals, particularly puppies and kittens, were killed during some scenes
yippykiyay89 Yeah there are a lot of allegations of animal cruelty if you look it up. But even besides that if you rewatch it, the scenes of Milo being thrown off the cliff or bitten by the crabs. Or when the bear is trying to get at them in the scenes towards the end how dangerous and scared the animals must of been. Really sad.
I just remember the kitten (milo) in the box floating down the river meowing, so afraid.
I think there is a death count on wiki ... it’s kind of disturbing
I'm so happy you mentioned Togo. I loved that movie. There is a heart to the story that could've been lost without the relationship between Defoe and Togo.
Call of the Wild Review: See Togo...
Do yourself a favor and stay home this weekend and watch TOGO
Facts.
Ok I will. But I really want to watch this movie
Despite the bad cgi
@@dylana.9057 I'm not a dog person at all and saw this on a whim and I don't regret it.
@@foredimples529 Togo does seem like a beautiful movie
Last time I was this early we were getting consistently good horror movies!
Togo was amazing. I was afraid it would have an Old Yeller like ending but it still managed to be just as emotional without it.
This movie came out in 2018, but I would love to hear your critique on The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion (or Manyeo in Korean).
"Before we get to my review of The Call of the Wild, let me talk to you about Togo." lol
ME: watching Chris complain about distraction while being distracted by his AWESOME t-shirt
I saw The Invisible Man last night and I can't wait for Chris's review.
Hey! Did you enjoy it? I really want to see it! In your honest opinion, is it worth the ticket?
Doesn't the 70's movie still use the outdated "big bad made up natives" as the villains?
@@TheLoreSeeker so what its realistic. It was natives there and they protected there land. I don't find a psyko better.
When I was talking about how the movie was after our grade watched it today, I would said I would’ve given the film 7.5 or 8 out of 10 to them.
So glad Chris gave Togo a spotlight. Great film!
My mom has actually seen Togo about three times already because she loved the movie so much after a first viewing!
At the beginning of the review I was preparing to recommend Togo in the comments, but I was even happier to get a mini review for it instead
Togo deserves a stand-alone review 💯 So good
So, the director did Lilo and Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon!
Chris, please review Better Call Saul seasons 1-4 before season 5 comes out, it's such a good show!
I feel the same way about Milo and Otis. I LOVED that movie when I was a kid, and now I can't even think about it without feeling angry and sad.
Don't really know, but the director of this movie is I think biggest animal expert in Japan.
Directors these days CGI everything... it's lazy. I am praying that when "the thing" is released (again) they make more effort. Great vid as usual stuck.
Seriously, it's the lazy way out. Don't want to put in the work
i dont give a fuck as long as its not terrible cgi bloodsplatters
@@PrettyTigerlilly 2011? that sounds so fucking expensive especially with the weird shit in that movie, why the fuck would they do that
Ruthlesss86 I hate the notion that CGI is apparently the "lazy" way out.

How fun that this review is actually a secret review for Togo. That deserves a thumbs up :-D
