What made Mulan so admirable in the 90's animation, is that she took her father's place DESPITE not having any power or skill. She wasn't some superhero out to do good, or 'win'. She took her father's place because she loved him, fully knowing it might cost her her life, because as soon as she arrived at the camp, you see how useless she is, at least physically. You fully appreciate her bravery because she cut her hair, gave up her honour, to protect her family. And yet she proves herself to be a hero despite all of this. She overcomes adversity through sheer ingenuity and her guile. Mulan was funny, had her wits, and was a bit of a goofball. She was admirable and someone you could identify with. You see her approach the situations she's placed in with her mind, think outside of the man's, military style of brute-force thinking. She earns her peers respect when she was at first looked at as a weakling, even before they knew she was a woman. She is courageous and empathetic. She proves that you don't have to fit a certain criteria to be a hero. You don't have to conform to be admired. You can be yourself and still achieve your goals. This remake seems to throw all of this progression and character out the window. Mulan is instead a flat, emotionless demi-god who can do everything right out of the box. What an utter travesty of a role-model for the future.
I really prefer the animated version, and agree with a lot of what you say, except for the hair cutting part. One thing I appreciate about the 2020 Disney live action, is that Mulan kept her hair long. In the animation, when she cut off her hair, that.... did not symbolize empowerment or determination to protect her family's honour. Those during Mulan's time, regardless of gender, who cut their hair are cursing their entire family (father, mother, ancestors, parents in law, daughter, sister brother, basically anyone you're in a family relationship with) to death. And Mulan... chopped off a huge chunk of her hair, meaning she really really really wanted her family to die :,) That said, I understand how empowering it seems to Western audiences, but all I remember as a child was how my aunt and mother cringed so hard at that hair-cutting scene and went full rant mode after we exited the theatre XD;;
Chinese ancients considered hair as their life, cut your hair basically means you about to change your whole life. For example a married couple cut their hair means that they are no longer be with each other, or you about to die. Although still very little had the courage to do that. So I appreciated the movie for not cutting her hair, so she won’t dishonor the family (I read somewhere that Chinese could only did that if they had their parents consent) But in the animated, I believe she did that because she believed she wouldn’t make it back. So she left her hair(her soul) back at home to her family.
@@SamLizS sadly yes. Somehow Disney loves to do this with characters, even more true for female leads, a shame because it just removes the depth of a character
That's why you just show them the cartoon movie and then watch this one but don't try to talk over then try to tell them anything just let them watch it and figure it out for themselves I'm pretty sure even kids can tell that this movie is s*** will be able to see it between the two viewings
My hope is that this terrible remake is going to inspire more people to cleanse their eyes with the original. I just watched the animated one last night after watching a couple of reviews like this one
Also Mulan barely speaks in this movie. Things happen around her and she’s silent or makes a tiny comment. It’s so weird. Original Mulan is outspoken and spirited, that’s part of the point.
@@dankerbooper You are the cultural imperialist if you believe that Asians behave like Mulan the animation, that's a very American kind of behaviour. Also, I never said that the new movie it's 100% accurate, just less wrong than the old one (although the old one is better as a movie itself).
it doesn’t have to be a shot by shot remake, let it be good as it’s own thing, that’s actually one of the reasons why people hates the live action remakes, it would be pointless and very boring if it’s recreated the exact same way This film isn’t gonna ruin the original, it’s just gonna do something different, besides has anyone forgotten Mulan 2? that one has ruin the original, way before this one even came out
Disney: we want to make it realistic Also Disney: let’s give the main character chi superpowers instead of being smart enough and resourceful enough to do it herself.
To be fair, adding chi powers and a witch doesn't make the movies less realistic. It's the human interactions and reactions within the movie that makes it more realistic. Regardless it's a boring adaptation
One of the things I loved about the animated Mulan was that she used more of her quick thinking and brains to solve the conflicts than her fighting ability so to hear that she was basically the chosen one and some supreme fighter in the live action is super disappointing.
OMG i came down here to say that. I didn't watch the movie and i don't intend to, but by the trailer i felt she was the stereotypical badass and i hate that so much because, like you said she was a good fighter but more importantly she used her intelligence and wits to overcome the problems.
I wanted to see it and I have Disney+. But I was pissed off to find out you had to pay to watch the movie. If people already have Disney+. Don't they already 'pay to see what they want to watch'? I had heard of the legend/story from Jon Solo's channel and liked it. But I won't pay for what I shouldn't have to. Since I'm already paying to watch their shows/movies. That's just plain greedy. But what I thought of when I watched this review and read the comments comparing it to Rey from Star Wars. I was thinking: Mulan/Star Wars Rey = get rid of intelligent thinking and give super-powers.
Yeah, even with all of her training she still used quick thinking to win a battle not brute force in the animated film. All they had to do was follow the already good story and adapt it with moderate changes to fit a live action style. Too bad they they didn't
Original, her fighting skills were not equal to the main enemy, she was basically a rookie. She used brains, her friends and courage to overcome.... The new movie she is an unstoppable force because of magic.. Great!?!?
Yup, I agree. The only scene where the remake shows that Mulan is a quick thinker is one they took directly from the animated movie (the one where she causes an avalance). She's not shown to be especially bright or resourcefull in any other scene. The only thing that sets her apart from all other soldiers in the remake are her magical Chi powers. Which sucks.
the funny thing is, if the animation came out today nobody would give two shlts about it.. humans are so delusional jesus christ. And the Movie was exceptional!
I am so sad to hear that this movie goes down the "chosen one" route. One of my favourite sequences from the original was Make a Man Out of You where we see this normal girl struggle through gruelling training and eventually become a warrior through hard work and perseverance.
Judging from the trailer, there is still a significant training sequence. Maybe it will be like Wonder Woman or the Matrix, where them being revealed as super at the end didn't ruin the movie, it flowed well. I'm still hopeful. I'll watch this weekend and see for myself.
@@KeyDash753 hopefully this is the case although it would still take away some of that relatability I always felt as a woman watching this movie. I will try to go in with an open mind because I do like that they have tried to do something different from all the other live action remakes.
It is a terrible shame they felt the need to give her powers. As I understand it, in the folk tale her father trained her as a child. If they wanted to give some reason for her ability to rise above her peers, that should have been enough.
@@KeyDash753 You can pump all the training montages you want into a movie it's not gonna save it from wooden performances, bad directing and stock storytelling And yes I'm talking about the Star Wars prequels
Disney still hasn't learned that one of the main reasons their animated movies are so great is that they are so good at showing us the emotions of the characters via the exaggerated expressions and body language of the animated characters. This does NOT translate to live actors or realistic CGI animals. Either get some talented writers and directors who specialize in live action films and know how to do this in that medium, or stick with animation.
Why would they learn if they make a billion bucks on every remake they make? I’m starting to think that if they keep making that much money then perhaps that’s what people want!
I agree. And I think they should aim for a mature rating for the live actions. It really restricts the flow you. I think more blood and some sex scene would've definitely added some spice to the movie. The girl was pretty you know. Some lil tit for tat wouldn't hurt
This is one of the nicest things a Chinese critic has said about the lead: “Ms. Liu looks pretty, but she is afraid of being ugly, and she doesn't dare to make facial expressions.” What you said about her acting indicates she has not improved since.
she didn't even cut her hair to disguise as a male solider and rushed to the battlefield like she was filming a loreal commercial with luscious locks like come on
elisa ortiz it doesn’t bring dishonour at all I agree it’s not amazing but did I watch the same movie as everyone else this movie is so empowering and a beautiful movie to show young girls along with Wonder Woman
@@Slushie016 Mulan was a normal girl, and we could relate to her, she had to earn her place with hard work. Now they transformed her into a Mary Sue and she just had to hide her power. Wonder Woman, yes, is the daughter of a god, but she had to train for 800 years (not 16) and she's not a Mary Sue.
Amelie Mews yeah I agree the film defiantly has faults and the real life situations are terrible I just didn’t think it as a film was as bad as everyone was saying it is actually rewatched it and enjoyed it a lot more but that’s just me we can all have are opinions 🤷♀️ 😊
Disney: "We removed the spirits and the talking dragon so we could tell a more realistic version of the story." Also Disney: "So anyway the witch who can transform into an owl attacks Mulan..."
@@fernandomaurillovega6278 If they wanted to tell a respectable tale about a real-life person who fought in real-life battles, they shouldn't need to add in a witch. It's as ridiculous as the dragon, except Eddie Murphy brought some humor.
The director also said the reason it wasn't a musical is because no one sings in real life in the world. ... ... ... ... And you have a witch turning into a bird? You think that's something that's a natural occurring thing that happens in the real world? *sigh* I swear. Whenever someone is talking about the animated films in regards to the live action versions, (outside of Kenneth Branagh and Jon Faverau) it's always gotta be with some snooty barely disguised disdain for the animated films just based on snide internet comments just to make their version seem better.
Actually Im not surprised. I really like the original animation but for some reason the trailers for this live action version didnt made me go “wow” you know?
>"We are trying to make a more realistic take on the story, so talking dragons are out" > Puts a shape-shifting witch and a Phoenix in, along with giving the main character super human abilities > "ReAlIsM"
Yeah. I’m gonna cringe everytime someone says this movie was a realistic version of the Mulan tale. Noone, especially Chinese people, believe qi is a superpower. They turned this film into another stereotypical Chinese superpower movie. Would’ve been cooler if they depicted this tough warrior who worked her way to the top with sheer grit and training. But nope, let’s make her unrelatable and have her fly.
A lot of Chinese myth based movies are this way, the running/flying and the shape-shifting witches are actually pretty common. A good example of this is the live action film House of the flying Daggers (or 1000 Daggers can't remember it's something like that) and the animated movie The legend of the White Snake
One sucker that watched it told me that it all looked fake because everything, even the ransacked cities and battlefields looked all sanitized and perfectly clean.
Disney: We’re gonna go in a more realistic direction The movie: Mulan has the powers of a Jedi, "chi" exists like in Dragon Ball, a Phoenix (that looks like a Detective Pikachu Moltres) follows Mulan, and there's a witch that can turn into a falcon and possess other humans. WTF?!
That's still more realistic than a talking dragon and still a lack of blood. It's still PG-13, so they're not going for full realism. Just more realistic than a PG cartoon.
Disney realism: “dragon? Nononono, but Phoenix might be ok, also let’s put in some witch some chi and a whole lot of understudied Chinese elements to earn that sweet sweet box office.”
Not to mention the phoenix that is a symbol of rebirth and resurrection came from Western ideas of what a phoenix stood for (see: Harry Potter). Eastern ideas of what a phoenix represents is completely different.
@@BenCN The phoenix exists in eastern mythology but it is NOT a symbol of rebirth/resurrection in Asia. That association is only true in western mythology. The dragon and the phoenix are NOT the same in Chinese mythology. - A Chinese person.
the emotion came from family honor and "religiosity" in the animated version. So as to appease the CCP and be able to screen this flick in China those aspects of the story needed to be removed if they wanted that Chinese payday so they sold out the story. Disney is a disgrace and am ashamed of what they have become today. They are clearly not the Disney i grew up loving.
@@jothishprabu8 Still wearing those rose tinted glasses. Well they are that bad, sorry hardcore disney fans. Modern Disney sucks. And thats a fact. OG Disney will always be better than the crap they churn out now.
I mean the fact that they go out of their way to say that she is special and unique not at all like any other woman and has special powers and a destiny is absolutely "on brand". And the now classic Disney trope of having a female character that never struggles or fights against adversity. Is strong, and essentially unbeatable without any training.
Honestly the part that disappointed me the most was the fact that I didn't care for any character. The original made you care for Mulan, Shang, and her famly. It made you care about Mushu and Cricket. It made you care for Po, Ling, and Yao yet this one didn't do anything. It was a long movie but couldn't even give enough impactful scenes to like or connect with each character. Not only this but the ending was disappointing. In the original Mulan saves the Emperor in front if all of China. In this version she saves the Emperor... just in front of the Emperor... no impact at all. Just wished they had written the script better.
He didn’t even give her the necklace nor the sword that the enemy used😑. Most importantly Shang wasn’t the leader of the army 😐. Complete disappointment!!!!!!!!
I've just finished the film and yet I still don't know the names of Mulan's friends. This is making me question what I've watched in the past two hours.
Theme: “Do not let society tell you your status in life. Work hard and you’ll achieve the impossible, no matter who you are or what you’ve been through” Mulan 1998: an average lady fulfilling her dad’s duty in the war but finds herself simply outmatched by her male’s comrades but eventually through the harsh training, she finally reaches the same status of her fellow soldiers. Mulan 2020: Oh uM sHe HaS sUpErPoWeRs AnD nAtuRal TaLeNt! ShE EaSiLy bEcOmEs A wArRiOr” -_-
in the 1998 one, eventually through using her other strengths (her mind and problem solving/strategy skills) she can exceed the physical strengths of the men around her! it teaches people that there are different strengths and that it’s important to hone in on them and really embrace “unconventional” strengths! in the 2020 one, she’s just special.... and wow! she’s... cool
In the 1998 one, it's not even so simple as all the men around her are superior, so she needs to work to be equal to them. No, ALL the recruits are useless at the beginning. They are all just conscripts, way in over their heads. What I love is how when Mulan trains and works hard, she not only improves herself, but she inspires everyone in the camp to be the best that they can be.
What Disney didn’t realize is that most people can’t relate to the “chosen one” who already have what others have to work really hard for. Most of us are just ordinary people trying to get by and this sorta message isn’t relatable to us what so ever.
I disagree, I don't love this movie either, but I gotta say people love over powered character, people love the chosen one. Its just they done it wrong here. Like things are not fleshed out. But its not the fault of being the chosen one. And maybe it just don't work for a mulan film, cause mulan, the orginal chinese story, is not one of a chosen one. Therefore a chosen one don't work here. But the chosen one does work in other stories.
I guess I was kinda hoping it was one of those movies (like a bunch of Shaw Bros movies) where more or less EVERYONE kinda has crazy martial arts powers and abilities, so it balances out and is just a feature of the setting.
Villager: “Who are you?” Mulan: “I am Mulan.” Villager: “Mulan who?” Mulan: “Mulan... Skywalker” Audience: Grrrrrooaaaannn.... sighhh.... “C’mon!!” Thanks for your review Chris 👍🏼
D-Day Doug How? Main characters immediately becoming op for the plot without little training has always plagued writing, especially chosen one stories. Now that there’s more female main characters, they just happen to fall in line with that trend. Disney and many others in the entertainment industry believe that cool action scenes is enough to carry the movie and that having a main character fail or make mistakes will cause the audience not to root for them. This problem existed years before this “agenda” you speak on.
I love it! Such an uplifting message for everyone! "You can be whatever you want💖*if you're born with the right powerfull genetic combination or in the right family tree*" it's the message every kid needs to listen to! 2 Disney family movies came out in the last 10 months, and both had heroines who were strong only thanks to their genetics, so I know that Disney really cares to push forwards this lovely message! Thanks Disney, the non-pureblood, imperfect women and girls are happy to know you think they are worthless❤
The Chinese version of the Mulan story called “Mulan:rise of a warrior” is the best live action version of this story. I get people not wanting to read subtitles, but this is a CHINESE folklore. Meaning, obviously to get an accurate rendition, you’re going to have to watch it in mandarin. The movie came out in 2009 and I highly recommend it to anyone.
I have been postponed watching the 2009 version for yearssss. Then Disney screwed up Mulan which triggered me to watch 2009 movie. It was way better and made me realised a number of the scenes were copied from 2009. I am so mad.
As an anime fan, I cannot stand English Dub, it just hurts my ear. The expression are just not there, it feels so bland. I wish they had made this in Chinese with Subtitles.
@@thisbubblygoodness7611 at least Rey is entertaining to watch, well acted, and her powers can be explained. This new interpretation of Mulan just looks eh.
concavenator corcovatus her powers can be explained? There is a scene where Finn asks her how she learned how to fly like the freaking Red Baron and she says “I don’t know”. Rey is a poorly written Mary Sue.
So, instead of having a strong main character, who is strong because of their own efforts and bravery... we get a main character who’s always been strong, and has no character development? That’s... that’s sad 🙁 I always liked to see Mulan because it motivated me to do my best. I really enjoyed seeing her climb that tower and show all the men that she’s smarter and more dedicated, it was my favorite scene as a kid. Seeing a character struggle to then rise to the top feels amazing, specially if you relate to them as a kid like I did. It... it motivates you. It motivated me, a sensitive kid who was bullied and wanted to disappear, who was laughed at. Mulan motivated me, helped me become strong. Idk, haven’t seen that movie yet so I can’t say it’s bad or good... but this is already a bit disappointing 😢 Edit: grammar mistakes, sorry. English is not my first language!
Mary Winter I don’t get why people don’t understand. It’s Milan, but more of a retailing of the original story. She was a fighter in the original poem. That’s why the music is also different (to respect the culture) and so are the characters. The movie is great. People have to stop comparing it to the original animated film because is not meant to be a remplacement
@@dilaisy_loone2846 The removal of a character arc probably isn't a good move though. That's usually what people like to see in a protagonist: to see them go on the journey and grow as an individual. If she starts out as the best and simply needs others to recognize her perfection... that isn't very interesting or appealing...
Kyle C And it's also Mulan’s character arc in the original film that has emotionally resonated with so many people and made a lot of people drawn to the movie in the first place when they first saw it in their childhoods. It’s what makes the movie as a whole so empowering. It has a female protagonist overcome obstacles by her own courage and willpower, not by superpowers. To take that character arc away also completely misses the entire point of the original film, in my opinion.
Henry Zhang Chinese cinema is total trash, will take decades for it to be worth anything. Even Bollywood is better, this movie suffered greatly by appeasing China’s shit taste.
That is modern day, with the current generation of children, who are over 18 years of age. They literally want everything handed to them, and yet still complain regardless. Eternal spoiled brats.
The “Chi” was too much for me to handle. The animation Mulan was relatable....i felt I could become her if I tried hard enough but live action mulan was....pumped up with chi since she was a child so.......
Totally agree. Hate this movie, stand with Hong Kong. But to play devil's advocate, without actually watching this tripe, the hidden power chi thing, is standard in chinese/Hong Kong media since the 90s. Frail delicate girl, if she learns kung fu can pull off some power stunts, the premise being anyone, grandma, kid, fatso, whoever, anyone can learn kung fu and harness their chi to some degree. But handled by a white lady director and writers, that nuance/distinction is lost. She's just a super hero.
@@RecoveringChristian Calling this version of Mulan a superhero is an insult to superheroes bc at least some superheroes are good, relatable characters and aren't Gary/Mary Sue's haha
Come on! You mean to tell me you don't like that obvious thing that made EVERYONE love the Original Mulan movie in the first place?! WAR and EPIC FIGHTING WITH MAGICAL POWERS against confusing magical kung-fu witches?!
Disney: "We wanted this adaptation to be much more realistic and true to eastern culture." *Gives Mulan nearly superhuman abilities and every character speaks in English*
You dub the movie in the language the consumer is in. Disney is an American company that makes movies for a mainly American demographic, thus English. It wouldn't make sense to put it in another language if English if your consumer demographic. For example when Anime is licences in America it often gets dubbed (they record and English sound track) for that audience. It's quite awkward sounding to dub non animated, real people movies though. I've never seen it done.
There is a western-made film based on Chinese history called The Last Emperor. The film is very true to the history of Pu Yi, the last emperor of China but because it was produced by western filmmakers for a western audience, every character speaks in English! If you get past that awkwardness, it really is one of the greatest films ever made.
Both the animated version and the movie version have no influence in China. Just like the Chinese shooting cowboy movies for Americans, you can see hundreds of mistakes.
Instead of Mulan being a hero for young girls fighting societal expectations, she’s now a superhero, essential ordained to be better than other women, separate from them
mulan wasn't just for "young girls " it was one of my top 3 favorite movies when i was growing up because it it showed that if you worked hard enough even against all the nay- Sayers and obstacles you can be a winner.
It's like a fake feminism approach. They Mary Sue their female leads because they somehow think instantly strong characters are better than real people that have to grow and be challenged. It's just bad writing, void of any substance.
Yeah when will Disney understand that Perfect Mary-Sue characters actually make them less relatable to real women,it loses it's whole morals and life lessons. It just indoctrinates women to think they really are better than men just because their women. That dumbass narrative is already being promoted enough by the bias left wing nutjobs 😂
Let's be blunt, this "live action" adaptations are made just for money, and they way they butcher the originals just tells me that they cut corners just to get it out quick made money and proceed to the next one, it's the sausage factory, and unfortunately this movies are made by executives not actual artists unlike the animated ones, I had hope for this one, my fault I guess, Disney only dissapoint Edit:BTW, I have the high most respect for the actual artists behind this, cinematography, designers and everyone involve, I don't doubt that they can make an amazing product, but nowadays we are awere how much Disney executives like to poke on the final product and alter visions.
You know, even Goku actually TRAINED and got his ass handed to him during fights before he became the powerhouse that he is now...what's the excuse of the Mulan remake?
caliente2512 Exactly, that’s part of what makes Goku’s character special, which is his constant struggle to BECOME the strongest. If he was the strongest, it would completely destroy the character
all these movies are just follow the it was inside of you all along theme, they don't ever work for what they get, they just have it but don't know they have it until they reach the thin line between life and death
It’s synonymous with this generation of Disney as a company; always getting what they want by buying corporations out, taking their Intellectual Properties, and driving them into the ground with their woke nonsense, as well as their support of neo-Maoism with China. Disney is morally bankrupt, and seeing as how this film didn’t even make 50% of its budget back, I want to see the day they go completely bankrupt...or at least get their heads out of their greedy asses, stop ruining things we love with all this live-action, force is female, etc. bullshit, and make genuinely good films again.
The “chosen one” aspect reminds me of Frozen. The main character is born special, they present the story like a “you can do anything you set your mind to” message, but it falls flat bc the character has special abilities that no one else has.
well that's your way of seing things , i myself see that the movie is highlighting the idea that we are all talented and we're all special and while some of us choose to hide it , others prefer to unleash it and those are the one who are capable of making a change .and speaking of frozen , you choose elsa to be the main character and you forget that it was in fact Anna who saved the town eventhough she had no magical powers and that's a great message.
Kid 50 if it wasn't for anna elsa would have never been saved from her weakness , the movie is deep ,the message of the movie is that yes you may have magical powers but you're still weak if you don't have emotions and loved ones by your side . let me remind you that it's when elsa saw anna frozen that she gained control over her powers
“I like too that Mulan isn’t naturally a fighter. Nothing about her background or environment would indict that she would be. In fact, if anything it makes her risk and sacrifice all the more meaningful, she’s going into a fight not knowing how to fight. She has to learn like everyone else. Which allows growth for the character, as well as growth with the army.” This quote from a review of the cartoon pretty much sums up what I believe would not happen in the live-action remake.
Ah, another fan I see. I agree though, if you're going to show your character learning how to be a combatant, then show them stumbling as they train up until you finally get the payoff.
What I found weird about this movie compared to the original one was how Mulan has always been a story about a female hero in a men's world and how she is equal to them. In the animated movie she wasn't as strong as the men but compensated by using her brain and outsmarting everyone. Like with how she climbed the pole, and did the avalanche, ext. It show she was equal to them as a warrior and even rose above them using her brain. This movie on the other hand says the only way she can be equal to a male warrior is by giving her freaking powers! Lol
The truth is the animated Mulan is even more of a pure fantasy because the pole climb using weights is physically impossible, like 0% chance of success, whereas Mulan's feats in the 2020 movie is at least 25% chance. Therefore Mulan 2020 is more believable. In other words, for Mulan 1998 to be able to climb pole, she needs more chi or freaking powers than what Mulan 2020 did in the movie. Liu Yifei had to train for 3 months, but eventually she did most of her own stunts in this movie, so it is at least believable. You see standing on horses and doing summersaults and kicking stuff like arrows all the time at Cirque de Soleil, and her running sideways on a wall is called parkour. I've even found a video on youtube showing that kind of move. Also, Mulan's chi in the cartoon is the dragon, which is a special power. Without the dragon helping her, she is nothing. So that animated movie is telling girls that in order for them to succeed in the army, they need a special dragon to help her. I would rather that Mulan has chi than a special dragon help her and talk to her, and a cricket that writes. Also, in the animated, did you see the bad guy chop down columns with each swing of his ax. That's not physically possible. Finally, Mulan's success in the animated movie was pure luck, not her own merit. Do you realize that it was Mushoo who killed the bad guy with the rocket, and not Mulan? If that's the case, then she is not a "hero" because she didn't deserve the honor. In the Mulan 2020, it is clear that she deserved be be a legend because she earned it, she personally saved the emperor from her own merit, not with the help of a dumb dragon.
@@hummingbirdman ummm that’s not what chi/Qi is. Many Chinese people have been explaining this and the main criticism of the movie is about how chi isn’t magic or powers.
it's not even PG-13 worthy, the deaths and stabs have little to no blood. Heck, even "sending the messenger" scene from the animated movie is hella darker from this PG-13 movie itself
I love how people thought this movie was gonna be emotional when the main actress doesn't even make any facial expressions and looks bored throughout the whole movie
When i saw mulan doing that parkour at the start of the film as a child, i facepalmed and groaned and knew things were not gonna go well from that point
Accented Cinema honestly I wouldn’t mind a chosen one story if it was like Harry Potter or Luke Skywalker in the OT where they are chosen one because of the strength in their character. (And I’d even throw Rey from TFA & TLJ in before they made her the granddaughter of the Emperor.) But nowadays, it has to be a person born great. Because realism or something. IDK
My favorite part was when Mulan tells the other guys it doesn't matter what the girl looks like, and then on the end, when she returns to her family, she asks her sister did she match, she did, she asks how's the guy, and first thing sister says: He's handsome xDDDDDDDDDDDDD Such a shitty script (like whole, but this thing was so dumb it made me laugh out loud)
The sad part is that Disney knows it’s going to continue to make money for releasing sub-par movies just because of how big a name it is. People need to stop watching their movies until they start putting some effort in, releasing movies with smart writing, heart and charisma, things we used to associate with Disney. Walt would be rolling in his grave.
Honestly, I just hate the idea of ch’i. Why couldn’t Mulan be just a strong woman who bravely served her country? Why does she need the whole “ch’i” thing to make her special enough to be able to fight? It makes women seem like they need something special about them to have the desire/be able to serve and fight. Just dumb. The first film got it right.
Original Mulan: depicted a real person, who made a difficult decision, who had to work hard and learn and take risks, and who persevered to succeed for the sake of others New Mulan: Mary Sue who just has to take the limiters off
I thought the whole point of OG Mulan was saying F you to gender roles and just fight? Making her do magical things in a magical dress kinda defeats the whole purpose of that, doesn’t it?
It depends. The original story is supposed to be about the importance of family while the western interpretation (the original Disney movie) relies more on the subversion of gender roles.
@@thoughtsofaleo2916 i think disney was worried about the potential of stoking interpretations of the film as being transphobic or even being pro-trans given their history of making accommodations to improve foreign market box office sales; concerns that were not on their radar when the original was released
This is exactly what I thought (just watched it a couple hours ago). We get "special girl does special things and succeeds" instead of "girl works hard and successfully does hard things). It makes the impressive unimpressive, because any edge she has isn't earned.
I never got the "f you to gender roles" thing from it. She went against tradition in order to save her family, rather than it being the whole point of the movie. Like collateral damage. This seems way more in your face.
@SSJpro probably because it’s a really bad song that is cheesy as hell. It wouldn’t really fit with the tone they were going for here as the were clearly taking this movie seriously, maybe too seriously.
@@BasketCase-rr7tx yeah, having superpowers is very serious and realistic. And no, that song is Literally one of the best, if not the best Disney song.
To be honest though, I did enjoy the newer Aladdin. Ignoring the new cringy song in the film it was pretty good. I liked it more than the original to be honest but I didn't really care about the original Alladin.
the religiosity of the first animation was dropped so as to appease the CCP and have this film shown there. This is another instance where Disney have sold out to China and compromised the story to enable it.
@@AshenFountain Yeah, they did a great job with Jungle Book. It had the heart of the original, but felt fresh and different. I loved it. @@iamchristian1129 well this one is coming out so much later. An entire generation might watch this and not want it watch the amazing work of art that is the original. It's clear that these movies are a cash grabs from disney, so why aren't they good?
This movie could've been better than the original if they hadn't gotten so lazy with editing and storytelling. I still haven yet to see it but I usually agree with Chris' opinions.
When I first heard that Liu was casted as Mulan, I literally went: "Oh...mmm...ok. Good luck with that." And by "that", I mean a veteran actress who's been in business for more than a decade, and yet still has less facial expressions than some newbie Gen-Z actresses in China. She's kinda like Twilight-era Kristen Stewart except, unlike Stewart, she somehow never managed to get out of that wooden/bland phase. **sigh** what a wasted opportunity. There are soooooo many more talented, and equally good-looking, young Chinese actresses out there. EDIT: I don't actually hate Liu. I adored many characters she portrayed before (partially thanks to the scriptwriters and directors). 白秀珠 is cute. 小龙女 is a goddess. 赵灵儿 is really cute. 王语嫣 is another goddess. Liu herself is a goddess. She is, by far, not the worst Chinese actresses out there (there are a loooooot of bad ones). But objectively speaking, her acting skills are not good. A bit below average, in my opinion.
QDhann25 not going to argue with you, but name one so said young Chinese actress that does not have any kind of plastic surgery, speaks fluent English, knows Kungfu, that you think can do a better job than her? I’m just curious
@@西红柿-z9s Ok, first of all, I don't know whether people have had plastic surgery or not. I'm not a detective or professional cosmetic doctor, so I don't have the "receipts" so to speak. And I don't mind if an actress does plastic surgery, as long as it doesn't impact on her acting skills (e.g. doesn't stiffen her face). Second, many actresses in China can speak reasonably good English, especially the millennial and Gen-Z ones. The big Acting Academies in China graduate hundreds of them every year. They would have no problem delivering English lines better (with more emotion, and maybe even better pronunciation) than Liu Yifei. *Random examples* : Song Zu'er, Tang Wei, Han Xue, Jiang Shuying, Zhou Dongyu. They all have far better acting skills than Liu. And I know they have good English, because I've seen them either doing English interviews or speaking English in public before. Most Chinese actresses never ever showcase their English skills, because they don't have any activity outside China so, again, it's hard to fact-check. As with Kungfu, I'm pretty sure Tang Wei knows Kungfu. She's probably not as good as Liu? Maybe I'm underestimating her? I'm not sure. Han and Jiang maybe know Kungfu? I don't know how good they are. I watch a lot of Chinese movies/dramas but don't "stan" any celebrity, so I don't know much about their skills/talents other than those already shown in their works. Omg, I just remembered ZHANG ZIYI. She is older than Liu (Liu is 33 and she's 41) but she looks very very young and would arguably be the perfect choice for Mulan. Her Kungfu skills and acting skills are both vastly superior. Her English is good enough (her accent is kinda the same as Liu). And I can say with 1000% certainty that she can do a far better job playing Mulan. All that being said, Mulan is not a Kungfu movie. I don't think most people loved the original Mulan animation because of Mulan's outstanding Kungfu skills. Actually, if my memory's correct, animation-Mulan is not a very good Fungku fighter. In the story, she does learn to fight on the battlefield. But Chinese soldiers never needed to master Kungfu in order to fight in war. Battlefield-fighting skills are very different from martial arts. This is why I actually prefer someone who doesn't know Kungfu (and has to learn from scratch - just like Mulan herself) but has very good acting skills, over someone like Liu who's good at Kungfu but has very questionable acting skills and has trouble delivering the most important emotional scenes. I mean...am I out of touch with reality? Am I the only one who doesn't care if live-action Mulan has a lot of cool Kungfu-fighting scenes or not? Ok, if I'm in the minority here, then ignore my previous argument about Kungfu. In short, with utmost certainty, my choice for the perfect Mulan is the legendary Zhang Ziyi. Besides that, I can also settle for many other actresses who can't do much Kungfu but can speak good English and act better than Liu.
Mulan: rise of the warrior is probably the closest and realistic adaptation to the ballad of Mulan....how is Disney gonna say they are making Mulan realistic to the source material yet there is a witch with magical powers and apparently Mulan with hidden powers??? at least the animation showed Mulan using her wits and intelligence other than building her physicque.
"Chi" isn't magical powers.. its a long standing chinese technique of raising one self's energy that people still practice today.. also Mulan is a real story generations old, told my the chinese people and they would not speak of dragons in their culture but witches did exist back then and were prevalent, so it would make more sense to have a witch. Also, I for one am a huge fan of the witch actress Gong Li so honestly who cares about a stupid dragon. what are you.. 12? in what way would a stupid CGI dragon make sense in this movie
@@user-bu8xe5jg7s Thank you for summing up "Qigong", because here in the west we simply just translate it to being "super powers" after having it explained to us.
Mulan is NOT a great warrior, that was the point in the animated! She’s a character that thinks outside the box, clever rather than strong. That was the trait that made her different from every other soldier, her contribution. Is there really none of that in the live? They have Belle invent the washing machine but the woman we’re introduced to tying a feed bag to the dog to feed the chickens... she’s just crouching dragon now?
the historic mulan was skilled in martial art even before she went to the army. mulan didn't took his father place if she didn't knew she could do it, she had the confidence to do it. the disney animated version just whitewashed this fact. sad fact is that western audiences are not comfortable with strong women, they can't handle it.
Nadir Mohamed Yeah, but when they said “historical” I’m pretty sure they meant in the original ballad where the character “mulan” was first conceived. In the original source material (the ballad) she was already a skilled warrior before becoming a solider. And this live action is not only inspired by the disney animated cartoon, but by the original ballad as well. In that sense it is faithful to the source material
That "except for" is the factor here, not all of the live action remakes are disappointing cashgrabs. Some are decent, some are more than that, but in general, I don't think anyone is surprised when those things flop. I rather believe they're surprised when they don't, enough so to have a little faith in what's upcoming, before the brutal reality tempers those expectations rather harshly.
I love how they couldn't even let her get wounded and found out that way. Cant have a female character get hurt! That would mean she had weaknesses! Christ Its Rey all over again.
It also takes away the impact from the OG scene, when Shang was the one to discover Ping is actually Mulan, it was heartbreaking to see how Shang trusted Ping, and considered executing her on the spot, only to spare her out of mercy and repaying his life.
As a Chinese, i have to say the movie received almost unanimous negative reviews in China, I was embarrassed when I watched this movie. Why does Mulan need to have "qi"? Come on,this is not Star Wars, Mulan is just an ordinary girl, but foreign enemies invaded, she mustered up the courage to fight for her old father, for her loyalty and beloved country. This could have been a movie with great potential , but Disney wasted it... This is just what westerners think of Mulan...
Most Westerners hate this new version too. Disney has an agenda when they make these movies, and that agenda involves making the characters physically stronger at the cost of their relatability. This really harms the audience's investment, and it leaves the movie feeling hollow and shallow.
thats not what westerners think of mulan not ay all. ita what souless corporate execs without a single shred of creativity or passion designed mulan without even thinking. just a souless cash grab.
@@hahay6727 liu yifei is famous as bad actress in china right?. I thought her acting will improve in this movie but actually many people said otherwise.
I think one of the best parts of the animation is the "make a man out of you" sequence where she starts of as one of the worst soldiers but her determination and out of the box thinking helped her overcome the obstacles and gain the respect of her peers. Of course in this day and age, if the line "did they send me daughters, when I asked for sons" was included all hell would break loose...

(if you don't know the ballad of mulan goes: mulan's (who may or may not be chinese) dad is too old to fight, her brother is to young, so she, in disguise, challenges her dad to a fight, beats him, reveals herself, he lets her go, she fights in the army for 12 years (which was common place) offered a position and some girls hand in marriage, she says no and goes home, goes back to meet up with her old military buddies and tells them she's a girl and they're all shocked. there's more detail but that's the basics of it.

Alice in the Wonderland remake was grittier for sure, but I wouldn't call it "serious". It still very much held the absurd tone and ridiculousness, but in subtler way.
I knew this was gonna be bad. They lied and said they left out Mushu for a more grounded story. Then the very next trailer showed a lady turning into a bird. Smh
I finally got around to watch this and your first point is absolutely correct. There is no weight to her actions except what we could just as easily gather from a synopsis. Just read a summary of the movie and you'll go through pretty much all the emotions you'd go through watching it, except maybe the headaches and frustration. Second, it felt like the story was built around scenes. Like they came up with scenes then forced a story around it. Also Mulan is Elsa, "Conceal, don't feel, don't let it show" to "Let it go".
They don't get it. If it doesn't have the songs, it's not a remake of a Disney movie, it's yet another retelling of the old tale, of which there are dozens who have done before, and done better. You also don't need to shove in social messages, they are inherent in the original tale, and again, already done better.

I really prefer the animated version, and agree with a lot of what you say, except for the hair cutting part.
One thing I appreciate about the 2020 Disney live action, is that Mulan kept her hair long. In the animation, when she cut off her hair, that.... did not symbolize empowerment or determination to protect her family's honour. Those during Mulan's time, regardless of gender, who cut their hair are cursing their entire family (father, mother, ancestors, parents in law, daughter, sister brother, basically anyone you're in a family relationship with) to death. And Mulan... chopped off a huge chunk of her hair, meaning she really really really wanted her family to die :,)
That said, I understand how empowering it seems to Western audiences, but all I remember as a child was how my aunt and mother cringed so hard at that hair-cutting scene and went full rant mode after we exited the theatre XD;;
@@neila128 You're right, 100%.
I agree completely... well said!!

Chinese ancients considered hair as their life, cut your hair basically means you about to change your whole life. For example a married couple cut their hair means that they are no longer be with each other, or you about to die. Although still very little had the courage to do that.
So I appreciated the movie for not cutting her hair, so she won’t dishonor the family (I read somewhere that Chinese could only did that if they had their parents consent)
But in the animated, I believe she did that because she believed she wouldn’t make it back. So she left her hair(her soul) back at home to her family.
Wait tf is this with hidden powers... Were is the struggle? The fight to grow? Why remove the depth of that character.... That was a key strong part

@@mora8902 last time I was this early Mulan was a Chinese legend and not a Disney film.
Did you watch it for yourself or are you just commenting based on reviews?
I was thinking:
Mulan/Star Wars Rey = get rid of intelligent thinking and give super-powers.
The irony is... The animated version is way more credible and realistic than _anything_ in this movie
Except for the soldiers salute xd

I absolutely agree with you
Why would they learn if they make a billion bucks on every remake they make? I’m starting to think that if they keep making that much money then perhaps that’s what people want!
That's the issue with live action movies. You need both a good director and a great actor to be convincing of the emotions they want to portray.
I agree. And I think they should aim for a mature rating for the live actions. It really restricts the flow you. I think more blood and some sex scene would've definitely added some spice to the movie. The girl was pretty you know. Some lil tit for tat wouldn't hurt

Disney: We’re gonna go in a more realistic direction
Chris: “There’s not one drop of blood in this movie”
One sucker that watched it told me that it all looked fake because everything, even the ransacked cities and battlefields looked all sanitized and perfectly clean.
Disney: We’re gonna go in a more realistic direction
The movie: Mulan has the powers of a Jedi, "chi" exists like in Dragon Ball, a Phoenix (that looks like a Detective Pikachu Moltres) follows Mulan, and there's a witch that can turn into a falcon and possess other humans.
WTF?!
Technically there were like two drops of blood, literally, but that's all lol
That's still more realistic than a talking dragon and still a lack of blood. It's still PG-13, so they're not going for full realism. Just more realistic than a PG cartoon.

Hey baby
Disney realism: “dragon? Nononono, but Phoenix might be ok, also let’s put in some witch some chi and a whole lot of understudied Chinese elements to earn that sweet sweet box office.”
Not to mention the phoenix that is a symbol of rebirth and resurrection came from Western ideas of what a phoenix stood for (see: Harry Potter). Eastern ideas of what a phoenix represents is completely different.
RemRewRoe Phoenix is also a mythic creature in Chinese history, dragon and Phoenix are the same in Chinese history

Welcome to Disney live action remakes!
Stop with this BS. They're aren't that Bad!
the emotion came from family honor and "religiosity" in the animated version. So as to appease the CCP and be able to screen this flick in China those aspects of the story needed to be removed if they wanted that Chinese payday so they sold out the story. Disney is a disgrace and am ashamed of what they have become today. They are clearly not the Disney i grew up loving.
Forrest Gump theyre worse
Literally my exact thoughts. Well said
He didn’t even give her the necklace nor the sword that the enemy used😑. Most importantly Shang wasn’t the leader of the army 😐. Complete disappointment!!!!!!!!
I've just finished the film and yet I still don't know the names of Mulan's friends. This is making me question what I've watched in the past two hours.
EXACTLY what I told my dad
It's sad that I liked the characters because of the bigger names that played them. Not because of the characters themselves. It's sadly hollow...
Theme: “Do not let society tell you your status in life. Work hard and you’ll achieve the impossible, no matter who you are or what you’ve been through”
Mulan 1998: an average lady fulfilling her dad’s duty in the war but finds herself simply outmatched by her male’s comrades but eventually through the harsh training, she finally reaches the same status of her fellow soldiers.
Mulan 2020: Oh uM sHe HaS sUpErPoWeRs AnD nAtuRal TaLeNt! ShE EaSiLy bEcOmEs A wArRiOr”
-_-
in the 1998 one, eventually through using her other strengths (her mind and problem solving/strategy skills) she can exceed the physical strengths of the men around her! it teaches people that there are different strengths and that it’s important to hone in on them and really embrace “unconventional” strengths!
in the 2020 one, she’s just special.... and wow! she’s... cool
Reminds me of Rey from Star Wars
Boba Dom who’s rey? I watched all 6 Star Wars movies recently and don’t remember anyone named Rey.
The Random D my bad, damn Disney for having me believe there was 9 movies instead of 6 I swear they’re gaslighting me
In the 1998 one, it's not even so simple as all the men around her are superior, so she needs to work to be equal to them.
It's to feel chinese kids feel superior to everybody else. They already do with the CCP propaganda, lol
Lol, what Master Gecko doesn’t realize is Disney don’t hire basic people they hire the “chosen one(s)”.
Had they chosen a better actress, kept the little dragkn in the story and also kept her struggle, this movie would have been decent.

@@jimlaw8199 good point actually
Thanks Disney, the non-pureblood, imperfect women and girls are happy to know you think they are worthless❤
cory dk ya, but in the original she wasn’t like that she had to train, that was he talking about, but now she devolved into a generic character

I loved og Mulan for the fact that her character actually grew and had development
So the film did everything wrong and missed the entire point of the film? Not surprised at all.

That is modern day, with the current generation of children, who are over 18 years of age. They literally want everything handed to them, and yet still complain regardless. Eternal spoiled brats.
I kinda think we're already there, tbh. Not all of them of course, but a lot of them, yeah.
Worse; who gave up early without trying because they think they simply aren't special/talented/cut out for it.
It also teaches that if you’re not specially gifted as a woman already you should just give up and marry like Mulan’s sister
K that’s an interesting insight I hadn’t thought of... I grew up on these kinds of concepts fed to me in movies, too. It’s not a healthy way to think.
The “Chi” was too much for me to handle. The animation Mulan was relatable....i felt I could become her if I tried hard enough but live action mulan was....pumped up with chi since she was a child so.......
Leave it to modern feminism to ruin a classic feminist movie.

Disney: "We wanted this adaptation to be much more realistic and true to eastern culture."
*Gives Mulan nearly superhuman abilities and every character speaks in English*
Well there are other audio versions
You dub the movie in the language the consumer is in. Disney is an American company that makes movies for a mainly American demographic, thus English. It wouldn't make sense to put it in another language if English if your consumer demographic.
For example when Anime is licences in America it often gets dubbed (they record and English sound track) for that audience. It's quite awkward sounding to dub non animated, real people movies though. I've never seen it done.
Eastern culture is such a board term. The East includes the whole continent of Asia, which in of itself is extremely multicultural.
Everybody literally has chi. It's not exclusive to one sex group. What the hell is wrong with Disney?! Dishonor on their cow!
Yeah Xiran Jay Zhao pointed this out as well in her video
Well the witch does say this in the movie, but yeah I guess we don’t really see anyone other than them displaying powers.
Instead of Mulan being a hero for young girls fighting societal expectations, she’s now a superhero, essential ordained to be better than other women, separate from them

It just indoctrinates women to think they really are better than men just because their women. That dumbass narrative is already being promoted enough by the bias left wing nutjobs 😂
Even actual superhero characters like say, Wonder Woman, who are born to be powerful, still have story arcs where they have to grow and learn.

The “chosen one” aspect reminds me of Frozen. The main character is born special, they present the story like a “you can do anything you set your mind to” message, but it falls flat bc the character has special abilities that no one else has.
So true. I never realized that but I knew something was off
well that's your way of seing things , i myself see that the movie is highlighting the idea that we are all talented and we're all special and while some of us choose to hide it , others prefer to unleash it and those are the one who are capable of making a change .and speaking of frozen , you choose elsa to be the main character and you forget that it was in fact Anna who saved the town eventhough she had no magical powers and that's a great message.
That’s why everyone likes Anna better
Andrew Jaques I saw it as more like Rey from Star Wars
“I like too that Mulan isn’t naturally a fighter. Nothing about her background or environment would indict that she would be.
Shut up
@@hummingbirdman ummm that’s not what chi/Qi is. Many Chinese people have been explaining this and the main criticism of the movie is about how chi isn’t magic or powers.

The sad part is that Disney knows it’s going to continue to make money for releasing sub-par movies just because of how big a name it is.
The only live action film that was better than the original is The Jungle Book
@@AshenFountain Yeah, they did a great job with Jungle Book. It had the heart of the original, but felt fresh and different. I loved it.
I'm not a hater of remakes, but I do dislike when studios are lazy about it. Batman has been remade several times in live action and animation which shows me you can remake several times and still have a great product.
Ashenfountain
Tbh, I prefer every original movies than the remake but yeah, Jungle Book was pretty good
What I don't understand is why everyone ever keeps ignoring there already IS a live-action Mulan movie from 2009, which is absolutely badass, more realistic and even keeps the love-story in. Sure, it's no musical and there's no Mushuu, but it's simply amazing and a huge chinese production. Whoever reads this, please check it out, it's really worth it.

7:11 "Gong Li, is very good in the film, Jet Li also really good as the emperor. But the lead actress Unfortunat Li is very blank..."
😆
"Main lead is bland"
We Chinese knew her for years, "yah, we know..."
QDhann25 girl, you really know your shit👍👍👍
i'd rather choose Jin Tian, Shu Qi or even Dilraba Dilmurat
Mulan: rise of the warrior is probably the closest and realistic adaptation to the ballad of Mulan....how is Disney gonna say they are making Mulan realistic to the source material yet there is a witch with magical powers and apparently Mulan with hidden powers??? at least the animation showed Mulan using her wits and intelligence other than building her physicque.
I was confused by that armored witch clip. Within context or not, I know it doesn't have a place within Mulan's story.

GenericOpinion “are not comfortable with strong women”?? What rock are you living under 😂
Nadir Mohamed Yeah, but when they said “historical” I’m pretty sure they meant in the original ballad where the character “mulan” was first conceived. In the original source material (the ballad) she was already a skilled warrior before becoming a solider. And this live action is not only inspired by the disney animated cartoon, but by the original ballad as well. In that sense it is faithful to the source material

Cinderella was alright
True, jungle book was great and had a distinctive style and atmosphere
That "except for" is the factor here, not all of the live action remakes are disappointing cashgrabs. Some are decent, some are more than that, but in general, I don't think anyone is surprised when those things flop. I rather believe they're surprised when they don't, enough so to have a little faith in what's upcoming, before the brutal reality tempers those expectations rather harshly.

Yeh man, the women in Disney films are always perfect in every way and go through life without weakness or struggle, so empowering.
I agree. There’s a problem in Disney’s writing when you know Cinderella (2015) went through more struggles, grief and abuse than Rey and Mulan.
@@EddyV09 To be fair, Cinderella had a rough upbringing with an abusive stepmother. At least Mulan had living, loving parents.

This is just what westerners think of Mulan...
Most Westerners hate this new version too. Disney has an agenda when they make these movies, and that agenda involves making the characters physically stronger at the cost of their relatability. This really harms the audience's investment, and it leaves the movie feeling hollow and shallow.
