Everything Wrong With Call of the Wild In Fake-Looking-Dog Minutes

  • The Call of the Wild is a pretty average film. Let's forget that the story has already been filmed before... this is just a bland retelling that doesn't bring anything new to the table EXCEPT Harrison Ford. And he's trying less here than he did during the "still in carbonite" scenes in Return of the Jedi.
But even beyond the fake-ass dog, this movie has sins, dude. LOTS of sins!

The wonders of modern cinema should make me feel excited when they announce an adaptation to a book I love, but that was totally crushed when they decided to make it a family friendly movie. Even IF the dog didn't look terrible, I would've looked past it if it was a decent adaptation.
This book is cruel. Much like White Fang, it's about the raw unforgivable reality of that time, both to nature and mankind itself. This book doesn't have a happy ending. But it still manages to be very heartfelt and I love it and I'm very disappointed they couldn't adapt it as the bloody bittersweet thing that it is.

Then the last owner gets eaten by a bunch of wolves, then Buck joins the wolf pack. And "White Fang" is the opposite. "White Fang" is about a half wolf, half husky being domesticated into a sled dog. Goes through several owners and abused. Is thrown into a lot of dog on dog fights for gambling. Gets to California and lives with a wealthy rich man.

Legally, Disney can’t put Call of the Wild on Disney+, since it’s a new film from 20th Century Fox/Studios. 20th Century Fox previously entered into a deal with Time Warner (now WarnerMedia) which gave HBO the cable/streaming rights to all new 20th Century Fox/Fox Searchlight movies, including ones that were released by Disney, through 2022. This is why several new 20th Century Fox films, such as Ford V. Ferrari and Dark Phoenix, are now exclusive to HBO Max, instead of Disney+ or Hulu.
This may also be why Disney is still dead set on releasing The New Mutants in theaters, because even a little box office money is better than HBO getting everything.
