I am living the Scout life vicariously these days because of constraints of time, money, and a family. I just haven't taken the plunge yet. I've been tracking craigslist ads and ebay for several years now. I'll have to wait a few more to realize my dreams of keeping a Scout in this world, but I can always feel it just around the corner. I grew up in Philly with and learned to drive in my mom's tahitian red '79 Ralleye. It was a perfect color to match all the rust that was to come as a northeast daily driver. We were all so proud to own that truck! Never wheeled with it except in snow. Trailered our camper around Lancaster County with the 345/ 727. Parents kept it through '92. I'd come home from college in the later years and pop rivet scales of roofer's aluminum over all the new holes to keep her going. Loved it then and guess part of me still does. Anyway, someday I hope to have another of my own. As the license plate holder on my family's Scout said through all those years: "Keep on Truckin" (Does that date us?!?). Bingo! Rust is the #1 problem to look for on Scouts. Wiring can also be a problem. Many of these old Scouts have had their wiring jury rigged so many times it can be a real nightmare.
If you have the grille in front of the windshield off to attach a screen on the bottom side to keep leaves, twigs and other debris from collecting and causing body rot, there's one more thing you should do while it's off: The windshield wiper motor is tucked away underneath the windshield on the passenger side. It's a royal pain in the tuchus to access. There's a tiny clip at the end of the wiper motor that keeps the wiper linkage attached to the motor. If the wipers are stressed too much from ice or anything else, that tiny clip will pop off, fall down into the fenderwell, and it will be gone into eternity. So take a strong double-sided magnet and plop that sucker down right at the top of the fenderwell between the top of the fenderwell and the wiper motor. That way if that tiny wonky clip should pop off, hopefully that robust magnet will grab it and hold onto it so it can be reattached. WARNING: Before reattaching the wiper linkage to the wiper motor, turn the ignition key to Accessories or On and ALLOW THE WIPER MOTOR TO COMPLETELY CYCLE OUT UNTIL IT STOPS, otherwise you will be in for a rude surprise: the wiper arms will go flying off the edge of the windshield, possibly damaging the wiper blades. {No joy!) I learned about these things the hard way, while plowing snow in a supermarket parking lot during a snowfall one night with a '79 Scout II (304, 4-speed, Meyers Power-Angle plow) in South Plainfield, New Jersey. That truck was a plowing fool; unstoppable. People were waving money at me to plow out their driveway...
I have always blamed mine on the Kansas winter road treatments but when I am constantly washing packed dirt out of every nook and cranny I know it was really me playing in the mud in my teen years. I always wonder what it would look like if it was a Texas truck its whole life but from some I have seen here, it wouldn't matter!
@@BarrettFarms mine was sold in Waco and lived out here in paradise most of its like and trust me it’s no better. Sitting in dirt and sand just ate it up. But other TX ones are not even affected. I got a donor tub for my traveler and it’s rusted in completely different areas then my current tub... where about a you located
If im not wrong, they remake the body parts in some place in the Philippines in an independent shop using stainless sheet metals. Because ive' seen one near by..."
I know that one of the Scout Lightline dealers, I think SSS, owns the original tooling for the rear quarters, end caps, and a few others and is stamping and selling them. If only they did the front fenders and hoods!

Ford and chevrolet and gmc had the same trouble with rust,but mostly gm vehicles were rust buckets,and the new gm vehicles still rust out.

I feel the pain of the hanging drivers door. Mines so bad the door is now locked shut. Have to enter from the passengers side gor now.
A hinge repair is badly needed for sure. My passenger door shuts like its band new, I might have to start doing passenger side entry too!

Super Scout in Enon, Ohio has most of the original part making machines from the actual plant and reproduces most of the parts
