The thing will be, that his dad was able to fix something, and that thing being a mechanical unit that intermittently compressed air and the injected hydrocarbons pumped from the ground that came from the distilled carcasses of prehistoric animals. A series of explosions used to move the vehicle forward. I will probably seem more primitive than a steam engine does to our eyes today. How many people in 70 years will be able to fix or repair anything at all. Many today cannot even.
This is part of the joy I get - seeing machines being fixed, rejuvenated and brought back into operation.

@@timcarpenter2441 Thing havent changed much over the last 100 years combustion wise, aside from hydrogen - I dont think it will change much from where we are now.
What happened to "flying cars, hoverboards, and self tying shoes?" there are a few examples....but they are concepts far out of the reach of most people. We've just refined what we had over the past century and now people focus on things that dont matter today and buy into what they are told.....
"How many people in 70 years will be able to fix or repair anything at all."
The issue with this statement wont be because of technological advances, it will all be due to the ineptitude and laziness of people. You can see that pattern today all around you, people would rather someone e else do it for them and would rather not bother to learn for themselves. Idiocracy was a prophecy. I know I sound pessimistic/cynical but its the truth.
I would put my life savings on that we will still be using the same or similar engines with either hybrid or hydrogen vehicles becoming slowly more mainstream.

I think this will be one of Bentley’s best memories in the future just him and his dad on a road trip in a sketchy old truck that hasn’t been on the road in nearly 20 years. When I was your Son's age, me and my Dad would take his '31 Model A to swap meets. We would have to leave around 5:00AM on Sundays to avoid traffic if we had to take a frwy. He would always find a place with pancakes ("hot cakes") and I could have all I wanted then off to the swap meet. Sometimes we would be driving for an hour and not one word. Then my Dad would look over at me and smile and I would smile back. No words. Some of the best memories this 64 year old man has. That feeze frame of you and your Son took me right back to those days. PS The truck is in my garage. My Dad Willed it to me over my 3 older family members as they never really liked it or wanted to go to swap meets that early with my Dad on Sundays. I learned to drive in the truck.

Stood up in front of the judge and said I don’t want them. 😞 That made me a good dad though. I make sure my boys have all these types of memories. I would never leave them. I feel ya! My Dad was a career military man. 30 years in the Army deployed all over the world. He hardly noticed that we existed (or so it seemed most of the time). Even after I joined the Army myself we had little to do with each other. Today we are both retired. I moved to Texas 23 years ago after a big blow up fight with him. He did come to Texas for my wedding 11 years ago though. A couple years ago I went to Kentucky to take him on a fishing trip, and he kinda just blew that off. Last week, I drove up again to pick up an old RV that he decided to give me about 5 years ago. Just like Derek does give her a good once over, change or top off some fluids, air up the tires and hope for the best! 1800 mile round trip with my son in law! A trip he'll never forget! Break the mold and scatter the pieces! I include my kids and my grand kids and they love to include me!

Brings back memories of my grandfather driving me around in his 1972 Scout II. I need to get it roadworthy, it has a brake leak and a radiator leak. Last time I toyed with it, I couldn't find where the brakes were leaking from but I'll give it another shot when I get the time. Perhaps I'll make a video out of it. It's been sitting since 2013 and the thing really is as mint as can be, not a spot of rust, no dents at all.
Update: I replaced the rear brake hose, and the radiator. The new rad is slightly taller than the original, so I need to make a bracket for the fan shroud, then it’ll be ready to go. Really excited to drive it again.

As a former Scout II owner watch out for the upper tailgate hinges. They tend to tear out. Also, the body rarely gets hail damage as it's extra thick steel. They only had about 15 or 20 different key sets. Also, the drag link tends to get loose so your front end drifts a lot. I've known several teetotaler owners who got pulled over for suspected drunk driving.

When I was younger I used to party, but now a guy's gotten older. A good Friday night is listening to a guy talk about car stuff. I'm 96.42% sure this is more funner.

71+ year old retired Kansas farmer and business person here. Another educational and entertaining video. If you think that vehicle is gutless, think again. In 1977 a friend of mine bought a new Scout with the Chrysler-Nissan normally aspirated diesel. The design of that engine was a join project of Chrysler and Nissan because because IH couldn’t come up with exactly what they wanted of their own design at that time. The CN-633 was the result. It got great fuel mileage (32+ mpg) which was great considering that we were in the middle of the gasoline shortage crisis at that time BUT it was high geared for speed capability and so woefully under powered that it could barely pull itself over a small hill ( I may be exaggerating a little here) without an assist from a helper locomotive. I think it had something like 2.72 gears in those two big iron pumpkins on either end of the vehicle. I don’t remember what he changed it to in order for it to carry a load over the mountains on one of his hunting trips to the west or the great north lands but IH did not volunteer to supply the two sets of ring gears and pinions. He was not happy about that but never had any other problems with it as far as I can remember but that was now 47 years ago and we moved away from that location while I was young and he was already middle aged. I always envied him having that Scout diesel. It’s the only one I have ever seen.😊

During this pandemic I have been watching stuff on You Tube that I would never watch. I have seen car guys by the thousands, but nobody, NOBODY, is as good as Derek and Company. This has to be the best fun with cars, ever. Thanks Derek for the really good entertainment. Great job, all around. Yeah, you have fans in Switzerland, can you believe that.
